2011 Cappellano Barolo Piè Rupestris Otin Fiorin (Gabutti) Nebbiolo

Brilliant nebbiolo from a magical winemaker. This is what good and mature Barolo is all about. Ready to enjoy and will probably stay strong for another 4-5 yrs. Everybody deserves to taste a wine like this to get a solid referencepoint for when a wine is at its peak. The nose was full of roses and little lovely mint flirt. The palate had it all - dark sweet berries, earthy, truffled aromas ..... when nebbiolo goes into its secondary (mature) stage the flavours just go on forever. I really loved this wine. Just came home ten days ago from a 4 days trip to barolo - with a lot of 2015 tasting in the belt. Nothing came close to this one. I do like young barolo, but everytime I find a wine in its prime, it lifts the experience to a completely different level. I feel extremely lucky, that I have a solid portfolio of Cappellano from 2010 and 2013 in the cellar. Feels like heaven is waiting for me. Btw - 2014 is actually not my fav barolo year, but even in this vintage Cappellano made fantastic barolos. It is like years doesn´t matter to Augusto, he is a true magician.

7/20/19, 3:16 PM - On my palate 2011 is not a long term vintage in barolo. You are probably right that this cappellano beauty will last for quite some years, but I like it now - as well as almost any other barolo 2011 has been splendid. A warm july and august gave a lot of ripe and sweet fruit, and I see no reason not to drink some of it early. I am no always looking for the secondary notes and expressions that comes with age. A younger model can do the job very well if you let her.
To me 2011 is much better now than any other vintage > 2005.
Everybody at my dinner tabel that day had nothing but a worldclass experience with this wine. And that is what drinking wine is all about - not dates and figures. Travesty or not - I couldn´t care less. And one thing is for sure - that wine did not live longer than me. And why the heck should I aim for that?

7/20/19, 10:55 PM - I have every idea of what these wines are capable of!
I do no present myself as anything but a wine lover. The rest is your words, not mine. Why don´t you spend your time one something a bit more constructive than judging people you don´t know. You have no idea about who I am and what my background is. Neither do you know about my Barolo background and how many wines I drink. I have been travelling in the Barolo area for 25 years with more than 30 visits. I was there 6 weeks ago tasting +100 wines. A lot of them more than 20 years, some of them more than 40 years old. I don´t post notes on wines that are nothing but show offs and impossible to find. I post when I have time, when there is a chance for people to find the wine and finally when I feel for it.
When I was there last sommer, I had a private dinnner with the The vineyard manager from one of biggest Barolo wineries, that I have known for many years, and he served me a wine (blindtasting) with the following introduction: This is the best Barolo I have tasted in a couple of years. It was a Bartolo Mascarello 2013! I am sure he did not feel it as a crime to drink it young.
My personal fav that evening was a 1996 Cappellano Barolo Piè Franco, but how many people can afford and find a wine like that?
Good luck with drinking your wines when they are +50 years, I´ll drink a lot of mine before - and I´ll keep posting notes on some of the younger ones that can be reached by normal people out there. If you don´t like my tasting notes, leave em, and go drink your old wines instead.

“completely at odds with everyone with extensive experience with Nebbiolo.” Ha ha ha. Do I sense god the almighty here? Wauw, welcome to CT. Sorry to realize that you are a supercilious moron.

3/6/24, 10:48 PM - Yes, I have passed away and am now sitting in heaven's wine bar, drinking mature Bartolo Mascarello 2016 with the Lord Himself, who, by the way, turned out not to be you at all. I hope I'm not destroying your illusory self-image with that revelation. If it makes you sad, just ask your doctor to significantly increase your medication, and you'll surely be happy again.

Who knows? Maybe one day you'll have an experience that allows you to somewhat join in when the experts talk about wine?

Salute, and big thanks for your always unconditional and devoted support and endorsement. Glad you like my Tasting notes.

I am definitely 94+ on this one. 2-4 more years and it will blossom into 95-96. Found a case for 75usd pr. bottle.
Overall - Great and embracing. Best Pauillac for the money I have found in many years. Delicate and vibrant nose. Ripe dark berries and cedar. So alive and hard to let go. Palate is what Pauillac does best. Graphite, light toast and blackberries. Silky tannins and just wondeful to drink. On the elegant side. If you can find it, buy a case and enjoy over the next 8-10 yrs. If you are looking for an affordable and drinkable Pauillac. You found it.

8/26/19, 3:46 AM - It is a lovely wine! I still have 5 more bottles in the cellar and will try to keep my hands away for at least 2 more years. Your magnums will live for a long time and probably peak around 2024-25. Great buy.

Reading all the other reviews I thought I had the wrong wine. Our experience was different. Very light. Very light in color. Probably the lightest Bordeaux blend I've ever had. Looked like a Pinot Noir. Initially a bit sour. Fresh. After an hour it mellowed out. Very dry. Minerality. Rose pedals at the beginning. Tobacco and a bit of leather now. Dried fruits. We get the potential. But I recommend waiting for several years to open. Or open it very early.

3/9/19, 1:05 PM - I believe somthing is wrong. I have tasted the 2013 4 times in the last 6 months at various occasions, and it is an explosion of concentration - almost like a Dunn Howell Mountain combined with Pontet Canet from Pauillac. It definitely needs 3-5 more years, but their is no way it can be the same wine you tasted if it seemed light and pinot noir like. I just had it in my glass an hour ago. It is huge - and a brilliant wine.

Served blind. Elegant and smooth with small red berries and a dry, aristocratic approach. Very well balanced indeed. Guessed the area (while others went to Barbaresco), misplaced the vintage as 2011

2/21/19, 9:54 AM - I can really understand why people could mixed it up with a Barbaresco. My mind was really pendling back and forth between Barolo and Barbaresco when I had it served blind yesterday evening.
And how cool is it to run into a 2013 Barolo with such an immediate appeal! Bloody amazing. So far only Bartolo Mascarello and Guiseppe Rinaldi from 2013 has been at a higher level for me - the rest +30 Barolos from 2013 has not been able to match this Roagna jewel.

  • Rolle27 commented:

1/19/19, 11:34 PM - I had the same experience with half of mine. Bought a case (6) and 3 of them have had this brett thing going on - the 3 others have been worldclass. First one was not good, and I initially thought it had been stewed either during transportation to denmark or in the importers window where I picked it up. But the second bottle was full of energy and freshness. Had my last bottle yesterday - opened it an hour before leaving to a dinner party to check due to my earlier experience, but luckily it was a masterpiece. It could easily match a ROAGNA VV Paje Barbaresco that was 3 times as expensive. I am giant DuMol fan, but a 50 procent failure rate is not attractive. Never had any problems with the syrahs, cabs and chardonnays or with the other pinots fot that matter - so to me it has been related only to the Finn 2012. Pity, the right ones have been so wonderful and up there with the best pinots on the west coast.

What a way to start a 4 days barolo trip - first dinner and Rinaldi 2013 Brunate was on the winelist. Paid only 100 EUR!
The best young barolo I have ever tasted. From the very first drop that hit the glass the aromas came alive. A Nebbiolo perfume explosion in the room. Roses, Menthol, Strawberries and Lavendel. Wauw. Irresistible. Then the first zip - way too young, yet so self-contradictory, because you simply can´t stop drinking it. The mouth is so muscular elegant (like a powerful ballet dancer), despite its puberty. You get the tobacco and some spices (cinnamon?), you get the cherries and red berries, you get a curtain of fine tannins - you get your world class Barolo. Drink one now and put the rest away in the cellar while you drink a lot of 2011´s :-).
5-8 yrs from now this could be the perfect wine.

10/20/18, 2:29 AM - @Aagrawal Sorry, but I am not going to reveal that little gem to the entire community here. I plan to go back in may/2019, and with a little luck there is still a bottle waiting for me. Hope you understand. I lot of rich people are scanning all the restaurant and shops in Barolo in order to find wines like this, and they pay whatever it takes to get it. This restaurant doesn´t have a website, hence there is chance that it can stay under the radar.

About as good as I have had for Barbera. Great acidity, as usual for the variety, but backed up by deep fruit. Nice nose of dark fruits and spices, a full palate with tart cherry. Soft tannins. Clean finish that is slightly drying. Better after two hours in the decanter. Great food wine, and works unusually well on its own. I am guessing this can age for a long time, not sure where it will go as it is great now with a meal.

Really enjoyed this. Still young, but there was a lot to get excited about here. The nose was wonderful, with earth and floral notes up front with red fruits wrapped around. The tannins were soft and the acidity was perfect. Been drinking a lot of red Bordeaux lately and was starting to get bored, but this was a very pleasant change.

9/7/18, 11:20 PM - Feel exactly the same way. In 2018 I have tried +10 Pauillacs in the range of 40 - 100 Usd without finding something I felt was Quality Pauillac and worth the money. So this beauty was such a relief to find. Higly recommendable.

WTF? weird weird. I know this wine to perfection. Have already posted 2 earlier tasting notes with a 95 points rating, and probably tasted the 2010 8-10 times in addition to my notes - all with a consistent 95+ impression. But not this one. Not flawed at all, but simply not the same wine. This one was a rosso kind of thing, ordinary, a bit too ripe, not bad at all but no way near the brunello la serena 2010 I know so well. Sad to realise the variation in quality. Same winery, same vintage but not the same wine. Far from the world class wine that seduced me a few months ago, and so many times before that. Grrrr. Maybe it explains the variations in ratings on this site?
  • Rolle27 commented:

8/25/18, 9:21 AM - Let me know how it drinks. I just realized that the one from yesterday was from my second shipment. I fear that the bottles from this case is different than the others I have and have tasted so far.
The “real” 2010 is outstanding, the one from yesterday was more like the 2009. Pretty ordinary and mediocre.

This has improved considerably since last time. It shows dark red berries, licorice, leather. Smooth concentrated fruit. Soft tannins. Closes with some figs and chocolate on the aftertaste. This is ready to drink now. Have one bottle left, will hold a bit longer 2019-2020.
  • Rolle27 commented:

6/21/18, 2:53 PM - According to my experience with these wines it will only be more port like if you give it 2-3 more years. Of course different bottles can develop in different directions and pace, but my last bottle had almost no acidity left which to me indicates that a downhill journey has begun. It was still brilliant, but I personally don´t think it will get any better, only sweeter and more warm in its expression. Enjoy - and good luck with drinking it in the future. Hope it delivers what you expect.

Tasted 6 2013 Brunellos during a blind tasting on 6/4/18. This was second ranked and an excellent vintage by Casanova di Neri! Dark medium ruby color, medium fruity nose. Strong first brunello burst, fruity - cherries, currants - very succulent! Strong barney, oaky finish. This is a rich, succulent wine ready to drink now but of course will age nicely.

Tasted at Benvenuto Brunello NYC. Color is a touch lighter than the basic Brunello at a light to medium garnet. Nose is bright and floral with red berries and wet stones. Bright and lively on the palate again with lots of minerality, cherry, raspberry and violets together with a very long finish. Should age well 10-20 years for sure. Lovely wine, but certainly didn't blow me away as some writers have gushed with 98-99 pt. scores.
  • Rolle27 commented:

6/18/18, 9:47 PM - 13 was a cold brunello year, and the 98-99 scores are from critics that goes nuts about the elegance, minerality and the pure expression. Personally, I am on your team with 92-93. But, as we all know - with a Brunello anything can happen with only a few years in the dark cellar. Wouldn´t be surprised to see this guy step up in the near future.

Not really agreeing with the other reviews. Decanted for only 1h and drunk over the next hour. Felt disjoint and light, especially considering the memorable experience I had with the 2011 vintage (drink this if you have the option!). Maybe the 2013 vintage will be a monster in a few years, but today it's (by far) not worth the money. Let's wait and see.
  • Rolle27 commented:

1/31/18, 5:02 AM - Some of these sangiovese monsters tends to shut down for 2-3 years. Don´t be afraid - it´ll come back. I´ve seen it a lot over the last 25 years with several brunellos, chianties etc. It is typically a good sign. Wait till 2020-21 and it will unfold.

If you can find this wine in this vintage (2010) buy it all. It simply gets better and better. Still 3-5 years from peaking, but it is a giant pleasure to drink already now. Packed with fruits and spices. Cherry, tobacco and dark chokolate. Orange notes playing in the back. Basically all the Brunello
elements lives in this wine - in an extraordinary balance. Clear backbone of minerality and acidity that holds everything together and still makes it fresh and vibrant (and young). I will be surprised if it doesn’t develop into a 97 points wine within the next few years. I paid 32 Usd for this! Could be the best buy for me in 25 years.
A masterpiece.
