A Merlot-dominated wine, but one that, despite its modern ageing, does not drown in wood. On the contrary, used barrels seem to have been used, as the tannins are of high quality and well contain the fruit bordering on overextraction. Although I'm not a big fan of the right side, I like drinking this as a slutty wine. A crowd pleaser.

Tasted next to the Pontet Canet 2003 to bridge the waiting time: Latour Martillac is currently one of my favorite wines, as I prefer the classic Bordeaux aging method. By this I mean above all a skillful, restrained use of wood and no overripe, and thus for me arbitrary extraction, which often ends in exaggerated fruity fuzziness. None of this applies to this wine, it is still relatively young, the balance between the tannins, fruit and acidity is not there yet for the lover of mature Bordeaux's, but the assets (especially the precise fruit with the great tannins) promise a lot. You can't taste the 14% alcohol. I have directly reordered another case of Magnum's, as I believe after integrating all the flavor components, he will still increase significantly. The supply of available bottles is visibly decreasing, one should not wait too long with the order.
Off the chain qpr.

Brief tasting note: After 4.5 hours in the air, the fun began: perfumed nose with great ripe but not overripe floral notes, full-bodied, taste typical Paulliac (pencil!), however, the great, ripe (rather atypical) and rich fruit is repeated here in the transition to tertiary aromatics, the tannins still palpable but not dominating and super fitting with nice depth giving, acidity absolutely still there and alive. This was really a stunner. And it can still go for ages. To the filet with porcini mushrooms and truffles an absolute upside. Something like this makes me happy.

Ok this is the famous Unico. I had it the first time and I have to admit that I was blown away by it‘s effortless balance and still fruity but sophisticated characteristics. Ribera at it’s best and bourgundian in style. I couldn’t believe it‘s age color is clear and youngish. There is enough acid to be an interesting food companion but would have enjoyed it as well as a solist. We decanted it for an hour or so and if you get the chance to get your fingers on it you should do so aswell as it benefit clearly of the extra airtime. Unbelievable!

At it‘s end of it’s drinking window. Nicely evolved tertiary flavors but definitely past peak. Showing some sediment. Drink up.

This wine is shining! Good effort, well developed tertiar leathery flavors with long lasting finish. Still vivid in all regards. Enough acid to last at least some years. Worth it!

It‘s past it‘s peak. Good savor in all kinds but if you compare it to the PC 2001 you feel that it‘s past it‘s prime. Good effort but drink up. Tannins fully resolved, typical Paillac taste but fading fruits and lack of acid.

A treat, still alive! This typical Pauillac driven and fully matured wine with resolved tannins is a great food companion. We had it with Wagyu and popped it right bevor drinking. If you like Pauillac and your Bordeaux matured go for it! You won’t be disappointed.

So this is the entry level Cab from Stag‘s Leap. As I‘m a fan of that winery and due to the fact that I possess the SLV and the Cask 23 I might not be unbiased in my judgement. Anyway, true is that there is sweetness and maybe a watered down less concentrated savor than their flagship wines. But in the matter of fact this is a good an highly enjoyable steakwine with certain complexity and a mediocrate finish. The texture is smooth and silky and there is no use of excessive oak. I like it. I would buy again.

Breathtaking. Still vivid, fruit-driven, long ending, kind of oaky. Needed like almost an hour to open up, but then... Wow. I think, it has still time left to go. Worth a try!

Well done, Micha!
