2000 Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
Decanted for one hour. a brilliant wine with classic BDX flavours Rich garnet/purple color, no signs of age. Nose was gorgeous, classic dark fruit, cedar, smoke, graphite/pencil. palate was dark berries, blackberry, graphite, floral notes, licorice. Mid/back plate showed more cherry and spices.

Quite disappointing on first opening almost flat with a slight acidic taste improved slightly on the second night. Will see how the remaining bottles compare. Doubt they will improve will more time.

A classic Margaux. Decanted for 2 hours before drinking and consumed over traditional Christmas lunch of roast turkey & ham. Drank superbly but this vintage has many years left in it. I've got one left which I will save for a few more years yet.

A nicely balanced wine much lighter in style than a big Aussie shiraz it was a nice change. Dark cherries & a hint of chocolate on the palate. with medium length 12.5% alcohol a nice drinkable DOCG Chianti at a good price. I will buy some more.

While I did not have great expectations for this wine I was pleasantly surprised. Following a double decant and opened for an hour it had a good ruby colour with aromas of black fruits and spices. on the palate it was very smooth and balanced with flavours of blackcurrant spices and some meaty undertones. very light tannins and only a medium finish - it would go well with roast lamb. 13.5% alcohol 65% Grenache 35% Carignan.

The colour was more Brick Red than bright although nice & clear. We decanter this wine just prior to drinking and it opened up nicely. Very light red berry on the nose with a touch of tobacco. smooth flavours on the palate with just a hint of tannin more chocolate, berries and coffee with a touch of tobacco & cinnamon. It had nice length and balance but another year in the cellar it would have been past it's prime. most enjoyable all round.

2 bottles of this were consumed during the 2010 AFL Grand Final, a drawn game to be replayed next week. Quite a rich golden color. a nose of green apples & pear, quite a mineral tang. On the palate, again green apples, some lemon with slight honey flavours, quite mineral but not unpleasant, nicely balanced with a medium finish. For the price very good value and would buy again.

Dark plum red in colour pleasant aroma of fresh berries on the palate quite smooth and balanced with red berries and light tannins not a heavy wine by any means and quite a short finish. A reasonable quaffer for the price. I doubt it will gain anything in the cellar, one for drinking now.

This was a special at the local wine shop and carried USA health warnings, so obviously originally intended for export. Colour and aroma was typical of a Barossa Shiraz that is ready to drink and this was confirmed on the palate with blackfruit flavours. Tannins were medium to low, however it had an acid bite and certainly was not a balanced wine. While acceptable perhaps with a meal it is a wine that will not improve with age and there are far better examples at better price points than this. In all disappointing.

Chocolate and Raisins a beautiful rich sherry that went well with a chocolate dessert. perfect for finishing a big meal.

While still very young, vibrant and with good acid and tannin balance. This wine was one of many we tasted (including the soon to be released vintage of Old Bastard) that we enjoyed during a visit to the winery. An outstanding old vine (1893) 100% shiraz this had all the complexity of a top quality Barossa Shiraz that will only get better as it ages. Beautiful blackberry and creamy coffee flavours this wine was aged on french oak for 15 months. Unfiltered and no fining it expressed what the real Barossa shiraz is about. As we were leaving the winery gave us the bottle as a gift 98% still full. Drunk the same night we gave it rave reviews.

I'm a bit biased as I've always liked Metala. This blend is tops, very smooth and balanced with a touch of liqorice, black berries and violets. low in tannins and acids it's a nicely balanced drop that is ready to drink now. I'm not sure how it would cellar over a few years, my inclination is to enjoy it now.

The appearance was clear with a deep ruby colour on the nose it was clean and of medium to pronounced intensity with aromas of blackberry. on the palate it had a medium to high acidity along with medium tannins. The body was full and pleasantly balanced with flavours of blackberry and leather, light oak with a touch of vanilla. it had quite a long finish. All in all a surprisingly good Cab Sav for the price. I enjoyed this wine with a BBQ'd eye fillet. I will be buying some more to cellar.
