A curious bottle. Musty in the nose, and the mustiness never cleared up. But the mouth was fine, light and pure, still with good energy to the red fruits. Had the nose lived up to the mouth, I'd estimate 94, but as it was . . . . Cellared since original release.

not sure if it's the condition problem of this bottle, it's somehow mute. drinking with 02 cdlr, 02 is so much better. The aroma is rusty and peppery. High acidity.

The oldest wine tonight in a MSD tasting. Came across with a closed nose but well integrated tannins and structure for a good drink. Again no fireworks for me.

Christmas Eve Dinner (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Attractive nose, mature and fresh, spiced strawberries and undergrowth, cool minerality, complex and true to type, delicately smoky; fresh palate with clean and pure flavours, medium body (light for Clos de la Roche), lovely balance, hint of austerity in the tannins; white tea on the playful finish, very good length.

During a Paulée dinner, so only brief impressions. Classic, lean stemmy style, lots of acidity typical to 1996, could need a bit more fruit. Complex aromas auf autumn leaves, game, cranberries.

Drank alongside the 96 Dujac CSD and 96 Leroy Beaumonts. This was a little more masculine than both. A bit darker in fruit profile but also with less spice and stems. Drinking incredibly well. Especially with 2 hours of air.

Liz Jones Birthday Dinner (Ponsonby, Auckland, New Zealand): Slightly lean wine that has finesse and satisfies on its clarity and minerality. Very refined and certainly a fine wine but I hesitated to call it outstanding as for my palate I was hoping for more complexity on nose and palate.

Pale red with a platinum rim, hints of bricking. Rich, beautiful and funky nose with black tea, dried cherry, cassis, porcini, menthol, pine sap, iron, blood, chicory, walnut skin and dried moss. Everything I want in aged Pinot Noir. Fully developed, light and elegant, hints of the wine’s prime character still echoing…Bright acid, present and spicy but attenuated tannins, beautiful and graceful. I want more. Now. Drink up.

Serious Burgundy night (Chez Rosa-Teixeira, Limmerston St, London): Mild, light but not simple. Maybe past its best but still quite balance and enjoyable. Good amount of fruit , especilly on the nose but the palate shows its age. It is a bit thin and tails off in the end. Drink now. 90 at best

Dark cherry red to a watery red meniscus. Developed bouquet of tree sap, black tea, goji berry, earth, chicory, humus and a hint of spontaneous fermentation...Blackcap raspberry truffle sweetness opens the palate and settles on a soft, mature tannic structure. Plush and meaty midpalate leads to a long velvet finish. Seamless flavors of mocha, red currant, mulberry, sous bois, tea and bramble. Beauty, power and finesse.

Lovely virbrancy in the colour. Nose of red fruits with wet earth lingering. On entry the cherries were prominent. Nicely balanced but without great power. Reasonable length.

A private lunch with friends (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Airy, perfectly fresh, perfectly classical, très Rousseau, bright cherries, wonderful balance and intensity, cool and intense, unshowy, nothing out of place.

96 Burg dinner. Strange, but this and Ruchottes had vitamin-like aromas I'd associate with another. Slightly behind Lignier.

Blushing red, watery rim. Taut, precise and bright. Crushed cherry pit, dried cranberry, mineral, rooibos tea, popcorn, turned earth, and porcini stock. Acid-driven palate, quite gently structured, feminine. Velvet, high-toned fruit, orange pith, cocoa powder and long dry earth. Some stoniness. Still coiled, should develop quite nicely over the next decade.

Amber. Primary scents of red currants and mushroom. Decent but simple.

Long lunch with Alex, KH, 7, Mun, Rich, Gary, Cary and DF (The Principal): initially a little funky and disjointed with tea leaves and mushrooms. slightly better after some breathing time but not really representative of Roche and completely overwhelmed by the Clos de Beze.
