10 years later and showing amazingly well! PnP, nose is graphite, red currant, rosemary. Palate of red fruits, hint of cola and firm but integrated tannins. Finish is long and drying with no alcohol note. Delicious wine that I wish I’d stocked in quantity.

Yet another entry level Bedrock that is over performing. Just barely picking up some secondary notes but huge dark fruit all over this wine. I wouldn't be in any hurry to drink these. Quite a wine for $20!

These wines are just so incredibly good for their price point. Chris and Morgan continue to bring it and raise the level of Sonoma Syrah along with a group of friends and allies who share grape/vineyard sources, etc. It is difficult to label this a base level offering. When it comes to their single vineyards it is so unique comparing the diversity of wines coming from same sites like Carlisle, Bedrock, and the Bilbros! Hints of the same quality, yet different expressions!

PnVnD let air for 1hr. Deep dark red purple saturated core with garnet to clear rim. Beef jerky macerated sour cherries and beets on the nose (really!). Medium weight with perfectly ripe cherry skin and black tea tannins. Big but bracing with flavours of Bing cherry soy sauce plums blackberries and dark chocolate. Lingering blackberry pate des fruits and espresso finish. What a deal for so much deliciousness. Drinking really well but still has some life left. Should have bought a case.

Lovely slowly evolving syrah with a lot more complexity than you might initially expect if you can drink it over a span of time! I have been holding off on drinking these wines and am being duly rewarded!

3 years since my last bottle, now my final bottle. Just drinking beautifully and shows way above it's price. Fruit is on the forefront as the tannins have integrated nicely. Lovely aromatics. Not sure it will stay this balanced for the long haul though. May want to drink sooner than later.

Pop and pour ... Always amongst Bedrock, or any maker's, very best values, the '09 vintage of Sonoma Coast is just ridiculously wonderful. Ripe and ready to go, but with some structure and stuffing that have helped it improve with age, with plenty of life left to come.
I had this and an '09 Kick Ranch the same night and, honestly, I think the $20 Sonoma Coast is showing better, with more finesse. This is a year-in, year-out case buy for us, yet I often find myself wishing I had more. Bedrock makes a lot of really great wine, but this is arguably the very best bang for the buck on their roster.

Surprisingly very good. Had low expectations as I prefer hot climate syrahs but I bought this with a bunch of Bedrock zins. Very nice structure and fruit. Great mouthfeel--really liked it

Black pepper, olive, and a little funk on the nose. Has a fresh, green streak on the attack, while the fruit comes across sweet and higher alcohol with rum like flavors. Tannins medium plus in strength. Has a dusty low impact finish that lingers. With such mixed qualities, wouldn't surprise me if this bottle had some prolonged exposure to heat.
Fantastic and rich. Aromas of dark fruit, tea, violets erupted as the cork was pulled. This is heady stuff, owing in part to the various sourced fruit. Some fat and green pepper compliment the fruit. A distinct floral note on the nose, leading me to assume there is a splash of viognier; however, Bedrock's description of the wine makes no mention of it. In any case, this is quite different from a bottle opened a coupe of years ago, being more complex and integrated.

This has put on some weight since I last tasted two years ago, it really coats the mouth with concentrated and slightly sweet fruit and savory meat expressions. There's medium acidity here, sitting beneath the rich fruit. Also found some olive and mint/menthol freshness, maybe even some licorice towards the back end. Medium finish. In a good spot now.

Ever so consistent the bottle of wine. If all $20 wines tasted this good I might write off anything expensive. Can't wait to enjoy the rest over the years.

Pop/pour. Meat/game and a bit of sweet fruit on the nose. Nice balance on the palate. Good depth of fruit without being close to over the top. Still a fair amount of acidity and evidence of tannins. I think there's a good chance this could outlive the CT "2015 drink by". It seems this could continue to evolve favorable for the next couple years, perhaps peaking then. All in all, this has not evolved very fast since I tasted in two years ago.

Tasted over 2 days - consistent throughout. Fragrant and enjoyable nose of dark fruit and spice. On the palate, dark and brooding, with loads of blueberry, savory meat, herbs, and spice. Some oak still noticeable. Seems to have fleshed out since the last bottle I tried in August 2011, becoming more full-bodied. Verging on becoming too heavy, with a viscous and thick mouthfeel. Still enjoyed it, but perhaps not as much as the previous bottles.

PnP & drank over 2 days. Consistent notes with my last bottle over a year ago. Wine was a touch smoother. These are so tasty it is hard to let them rest. Dark fruits, smoke & just the ever lightest touch of meat.

Decanted approx. 30 min ... Amongst the best Bedrock produces, and that's saying something. A screaming bargain at >$20/bottle, this one wildly over performs for its price point. Fruit present, but more about the Earthy and gamey, with great structure (good acidity, firm tannins). Compliments food, but also enjoyable on its own. Punches so far above it's price, it's hard to rate. Flat out awesome, year over year. Wowsa!

A Thursday Night Embarassment of Riches (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.): Whoa, this Sonoma Coast syrah came to fight. Gorgeous aromas of red plums, olives, juicy steak and potpourri. Plush tannins and medium acid on the palate. This wine pays homage to Northern Rhone with it's meat and olive flavors, but the blueberry and raspberry flavors are pure Sonoma. So silky and pure. Undeniably yummy, and even the Rhone-loving Tooch really liked it.

Weygandt Wine BYO (Weygandt Wines, Cleveland Park, Washington D.C.): A nice example of Sonoma Coast syrah. The nose was incredibly gamey and ripe with blackberries and spice. The palate seemed more aligned with the Northern Rhone (and as a Northern Rhone lover, it's somewhat painful admitting this) with great dried meats, dark fruit, florals and cinnamon notes. Thought this was showing very well.

This was decanted for about an hour. The wine is a deep, dark ruby to purple color. The very open and inviting nose has blackberries, smoke, charcoal, cocoa powder, grilled meat, black pepper, roasted herbs, leather, and some blueberry. This is medium to full bodied with sold tannins and very nice acidity. On the palate the wine shows a big fruit and spice component with grilled meat, dried herbs, dark chocolate, and baking spice adding depth and loads of complexity. The finish is fairly long and leans heavily on the savory elements with the fruit in the background. This is still young and evolving but very tasty.

Popped and poured, and finished a couple nights later. Aroma of plum and black pepper. Taste has blackberry, nearly jammy but not too over the top. Finish is a bit too sweet, and pretty acidic - probably could still use at least a year, maybe two, in order to get to its best spot.

C: Opaque purple. N: Earthy funk, blackberries, smoke, dark chocolate, blueberry, and plenty of leather. P: Mimics the nose with loads of black and blue fruits and the earthy funk F: very long
Impeccably balanced. Delicious wine. Wish I bought more.

- Violet color and aromas of black pepper and blackberry and has flavours of black pepper, blackberry and raspberry - Pretty jammy. This bottle isn't consistent with my note from March 2011. I was not enthralled with this bottle.

Sadly my last of the '09; guess I couldn't keep my hands off of them. Let this one ox for a good hour, plus it needed to warm up from the very chilly cellar. As outstanding as before, with an added licorice/anis flavor that burst forth in the final glass. These can lay down for another few years without issue. Best value in my cellar. Looking forward to the '10s. And '11s. And '12s... Paired perfectly with filet mignon.

Clearly outstanding, with dark berries, smoke, meat and chocolate flavors on a very refined frame. This will improve with bottle age, try again in maybe 4-5 years?

Decanted about 45 minutes. Deep, dark purple color. Blackberries, charcoal, smoke, grilled meat, dark chocolate, baking spice, with lesser amounts of worn leather, and blueberry. Medium to full body with solid tannins and good acidity. Massive fruit and spice on the palate with just a bit of earthiness and meat in the background. Nice length on the finish with the savory elements taking over for the rapidly disappearing fruit. I'd have liked a bit more fruit on the finish and a touch less on the front end of the palate. Very nice, but I'm sure some additional time will tone down the overt fruitiness and help fill out the finish.

Poured through Vinturi for splash decant ... Wowsa! The nose was a little muted but this deep purple wine paid off big time on the palate. Deep, rich and lush with black and blue fruits on top of a bacon-y, meaty mid before moving on to a dry, chalky finish with a hint of spice.
Dense but not heavy, this one is the total package and ready to pop. Killer value and amazingly well-made Cali Syrah.

Deep purple, soy, iodine, and blue fruit nose. Really hits you in the mouth w/ black fruits, soy sauce, raw meat, and some charred meat elements. A bit of a sweet finish. Tannins are big out of the gate but mellow a bit after only ~30 mins. Should really come in to its own over the next few years and provide excellent value.

The aromatics blossom from the glass with lush tones of gorgeous blueberry pie, smoked beef, black pepper, and mocha. The palate explodes with authentic fruit, showcasing rich, ripe dark fruit interlaced with savory spice. The mid-palate evolves seamlessly with elements of dark chocolate, rich coffee, and smoke, all culminating in an extraordinary finish of game, dark berries, bitter cocoa, and maple. The mouthfeel is simply fantastic as the powerful flavors are encased in sufficient and lifting acidity. This wine is not only absolutely delicious, but also offers great structure and freshness. Couldn't get past the spritzy effervescence of this wine. Took two or three sips and put it back in the fridge. Maybe it will be gone on day two but if not, I am 0-2 on Bedrock wines and won't buy again. UPDATE: Morgan saw this post and offered me a replacement bottle that arrived today. He also sent along a bottle of Heirloom. Nice gesture from a stand up guy! Will try again after they settle down a bit.

decanted and drunk immediately over about 3 hours. Fruit is still very rich and has a bit of baby fat, but also has some nice mineral undertones. Olives and a bit of flint to go with the rich blackberry flavors.

Dark purple/black color. The nose is very expressive with plum, blueberry, and smoke. In the mouth, this is packed with plum, blueberry, cocoa, and smoked meat. Very impressive. It is very well balanced with solid acidity and a long finish. Overall, this has great fruit, some complexity, and excellent balance. When tasted next to Jaffurs, this had more fruit and was a better drink without food.

Huge nose and palate of blackberry, blueberry and plums, along with some meat, olives and leather - but mostly fruit. Surprisingly, it also carries enough acidity that it doesn't bog down in the mouth and get flabby, fumey or overwrought. Lovely, though I wonder what happens when the fruit quiets down a bit. Could end up unbalanced, or could turn into a really lovely, structure driven wine. We'll see.

probably should have given this some air. pretty tight out of the gates with black fruits and a lot of grip, tough to discern any secondary notes as it went down quickly among a party of 4. will have to revisit another bottle down the road. 89-90pts

In stark contrast to the other syrah we had on this night. It was vey fruit forward featuring lots of dark blue fruit. The secondary flavors were a meatiness and gameiness. There was also some sort of lingering herbalness to it. This was pretty much a pop and pour and could probably use a bit more air time but really enjoyable.

This seems to have shut down a bit since release. Not surprising, but I think I will give the next bottle more air. Deep purple in color. The nose is more about minerals this time, but still some solid boysenberries. On the palate, this is delicious but less boisterous. Could be the bottle, my bad back or just evolution. The mineral streak is intriguing. Glad I have more to watch this with. Great QPR.

This wine has dramatically improved over the last few months. Vinturi into decanter and started on it about 45 min later. Smooth tannins. Aromas of bacon and some olive tapenade flavors to go along with the dark fruit. Insane QPR.

Tasted over 2 days. Still very young and tight -- this has not really evolved at all in the past 7 months. Love the meaty and blueberry flavors. Oak still showing a bit. Seems to lack a little depth and focus right now with the palate fading toward the back end. I'm going to let my last bottle rest for a while.

Really enjoyed his high QPR syrah. Very nice aromatics of berries and some flowers. Silky tannins fill the mouth with creamy fullness. Ripe fruit and a touch of white pepper on tha palate. Improved on night 2 (perhaps 89 on night #1 and 91 on night #2).

After opening a couple of pretty pedestrian bottles and having a glass out of each, I was looking for something more interesting, and knew I could count on this one. Pop/pour. On the nose, it starts out quite gamey, with bacon and meat dominating. Over the course of 15 minutes or so, an interesting set of spice notes become more predominant, along with something that borders on floral. Overall, very interesting, complex and nuanced. On the palate, great depth of fruit nicely balanced by acidity. This is not part of the California fruit bomb camp. Long, lingering finish. Very approachable now, though I think this will ultimately be even better in a couple of years when everything comes together as some of the acidity softens a bit more. A decant might have the same effect.

This is just a killer QPR wine. PnP'ed. Huge nose of cherry fruit with some earthy tones of pepper and violet. Dark in the glass so you know it had a shot to be a big wine. Big fruit on the palate with some bacon as well. Seemed to have more of a cote rotie profile than a big Cali fruit bomb given the chalky tannins that were definitely present. The tannins didn't put the wine out of balance though as there was plenty of acidity to even things out. I believe this is going to be a really nice wine in a couple of years.

Good stuff that can use more time if you want or drink now with a decant. After 30 minutes it came together with big red fruit. After some more time fruit faded a little and was able go pick up some iron and pepper. This wine changed over the hours that I drank it but was always enjoyable from the first sip to the last hours later. A killer qpr, wish I had more.

Blueberries and black raspberries on the nose. Light to medium bodied, with juicy raspberries and blackberries on the palate, buoyed by medium+ acidity. Incredibly vibrant and fresh for a CA syrah, I couldn't stop sipping and swishing. Wish I had bought a case.
Smoked meats (salami and sausage) on the Nose; dark purple color; cool climate type of Syrah; this is excellent, and at a stupid-low price point, ta boot.

Pleasantly surprised by this wine. Loads of juicy blackberry and plummy fruit. Nice complexity, with violets, tar, meat, herbs and fire pit. Old world complexity with new world fruit. The structure seems to come from the acids rather than the tannins, which makes this juicy and somewhat accessable, but this really needs time to show more. Lovely effort; put me in the "wish I bought more" camp.

Against my better judgment, I decided it was time to kill one of these youngsters and see what all the fuss was about. Poured a glass to drink while I prepared dinner, decanted the rest and returned it to the cellar for a couple hours' air. Opaque dark violet. Initial impression is primary red fruits and plums, but with a lot of spice to give some fantastic complexity: flowers, bacon fat, espresso, anise, unlit charcoal, blood orange acidity, and chalky tannin on the long finish... The 35% whole cluster is well integrated. This is delicious and approachable right out of the gate and in the end didn't seem to change much with air. Make no mistake this is a very young wine and, not surprising for its age, showing some oak on the back end. I think this doesn't get noted because Morgan, even on this entry cuvée, uses only the finest French oak, and the result is more a kind of exotic spice note and never shows as your typical creamy vanilla. This is a perfume that perhaps Bedrock becomes known for down the road. For this wine, it's fantastic young but I think the sky's the limit once this can develop some secondary characteristics and integrate the oak. I was head-over-heels for the '08 Sonoma County, and therefore really excited about this bottling, so I'm glad to not be in the "wish I bought more" camp, although I expect there will come a day when I wish I had more of this.

Indian food with Friends: One of my discoveries of last year was how well Syrah drank with Indian food. This one was no exception and in fact, this wine just rocks. My second bottle with this and I should have bought more. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, bacon fat, and black pepper. Full bodied. Slick young texture. On the palate, this drinks easily but has depth and interest. I am sure it will age out wonderfully over the next five years, but it is so good now, I suspect mine will be long gone. It is not a huge wine, but has a lot of fruit and other stuff to fill out what structure it has beautifully. And, as I said, the best food match of the night.

Not much more to say on this one....just a delicious syrah with all the required elements (smoke, meat, fruit) balanced by nice acidity. I will say the initial pour was a bit thin, but it put on weight with a bit of air. Robbery @ the list price - real glad to be on the Bedrock train!

"Oh, wow." Classic syrah color and feel. Splash decanted into pie plate decanter. At cellar temp, bacon, leather, tobacco, pencil, and some forest floor. Somewhat thin initially. Layers build in the glass as the tannins blossom. And boy does it blossom. Flowers, earth, and the bacon continues, which I love. Reminds me of a Big Basin but at half the price or less. Phenomenal.

Smoke and burnt carmel creme brulee. Ripe, rich plum. Cracked pepper on long, concentrated finish. Slightly high tannins (due to young age), with high acidity. One serious syrah that rivals a top cote rotie!

Nice Deep dark purple in color. Lot's of smoke, blue fruit, smoke, and bacon fat on the nose. This translates to the palate. More blue fruit, smoke, and a burnt sugar and camphor mid-palate. finish has bite, with white pepper, but not overly alcoholic. Really, a very nice syrah on it's own.

Vinturied into glass, and drank over about 2 hrs. This seemed a bit thin on opening, but really put on weight in the glass. A bit perfumey. More elegant and less fruit forward than last years Sonoma Coast. I don't think this is as good as last year's version, but its still a very nice wine at $20.

A Bunch of Wines on a Saturday Afternoon: I could not wait to open a bottle. This is young but delicious. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. Shimmering bright. Beautiful nose showing dark fruits, pepper, underbrush right from the start. At first, the palate feels delicious but just a shade short and thin, not quite living up to the nose. Given a few hours of air, this opens up and evens out nicely, with the juiciness of the fruit coming to the fore on the palate and making this wine irresistable by bottle's end. A great value. Would love to put this up against a Carlisle entry-level syrah sometime for comparison.

Just received the shipment yesterday but couldnt resist popping one of these. Bottle shock..ummm no..f'ing awesome old world aromatics of pepper and seared meat with deep dark blackberry and plum. Drinking remarkably well in its youth, the tannins are perfectly ripe and the medium plus acidity carries on the pure black fruit flavors. Finish extends with sweet toasty oak notes. Popped one on Super Bowl Sunday. Oh the nose, leather, raw meat, smoke, black fruit and lavender. Then I took a sip. Freaking Syrahgasm in my mouth. Rich fruit, mouth coating texture, blackberry and blueberry with a good balancing act between the acidity and tannins. Not overdone but almost toeing the line. Finished with a little tartness as well fresh ground pepper. Drank the entire bottle in a couple hours. Huge value here. Another extra base hit for Morgan. Grazing the aisles today at the local wine store and spotted 2 bottles for $19.99ea that I quickly swiped up. Popped yet another and don't feel guilty because I still have my allotment in my cellar.

Opaque purple color, very fragrant nose, crushed berries, some smoke, florals, some meat... really ripe, fruit driven, rich, palate coating. Initially a little flabby, but acidty comes out with some air, and shows more balance.. It has a delicious factor for sure, but I was struggling to finish 1/2 the bottle as its a bit tedious, perhaps its just a bit too primary at this stage... I like it, but apparently don't love it as much as others have noted here

Fantastic. Dark red fruits, BBQ, ground meat and black spices. Approachable out of that gate and better still after 2 hours in the decanter. Not much in the way of minerals or anything green, in fact, borderline sultry. One of the best $20 wines I have had, or will ever have.

Ok so I popped this expecting to be wowed with all the publicity Morgan has been getting on his wines. Not only was I wowed but completely blown off my feet by the fact that this wine is only $20. Pop and pour and consumed over the next 4-5 hours. It never relented the whole time it was open. You may call me crazy but the nose on this was fantastic and simliar to what I would describe as that Cayuse "funk" game, kalamata olive, earth, meat with a nice floral berry component. This wine was much more elegant in the mouth that one would have expected from the nose. Silky smooth with nice black and red fruits, a hint of leather and a hint of oak that all went great with each other. I immediately jumped online to find some more. Thank god there is some out there for the taking still.
Animalistic nose of roasted meats, earth, and asian spice. Maybe even a touch of soy sauce. Sour plum and cherry are delicate, with bright acid that keeps this fresh and approachable, even for such a young wine. Ridiculously good for the price.

Pop 'n pour. Even more enjoyable than the last bottle 10 days ago. Nose was still outstanding but the palate seemed more complete and focused this time. Really dark, brooding fruit with tons of roasted meat and blueberry. Nice structure -- should continue to improve with bottle age. I think I'll hang on to my two remaining bottles for a couple years at least.

Very pretty nose of game and eucalyptus. At only 1 year off the vine, this is obviously going to be primary. Surprisingly though, this is quite approachable. Dry black fruits are complicated by subtle brine and black olive notes. Although amply concentrated, a notable acidic beam keeps this propped up and cleanses the palate. I like my tannin a bit coarser, but the polish on these makes this easy drinking. My first Bedrock, and I'm impressed at this price point - can't wait to try the Hudsons as I love the Syrahs there.

Pop 'n pour - tasted over 2 hours. Completely agree with others about the nose on this wine. Wonderful savory aromas of meat, herbs, and a floral component, too. The nose promised more than the palate could give, but still not bad. Roasted meat, blueberry, cherry, and leather were there with a (thankfully) restrained oak treatment. More on the elegant side, with good balancing acidity and soft tannins. On the minus side, it was a bit unfocused and the flavors faded rather quickly, but I'd bet a year or two laying down would help this improve as the structure for aging is there. Oh, and there was a little spritz (as others have noticed), that dissipated after 20 or 30 minutes. I've got 2 more bottles of this, so I'm glad this came through after the disappointments with the RRV Zin and Dolinsek Ranch Heirloom.

This reminded me California syrah can actually taste like syrah, rather than an over extracted fruit bomb with 15% alcohol. On a pop and pour, the nose became absolutely intoxicating after 20 minutes. Scents of strawberries, cherries, cinnamon, smoke, leather and lilacs consumed my senses. I couldn't get enough of it and it was the first time in a long time I had been so consumed by the nose. On the palate, it was elegant and understated. The pure syrah fruit came through in a big way, allowing the cherries, strawberries and leather glide effortlessly across your tongue. It didnt try to overwhelm you with fruit, which I loved. Definitely has room for improvement over the next 1-2 years and can see this improving a few more points. Extremely good effort and an amazing QPR for $20.

Young and light. Would have been hard pressed to blindly guess this was a syrah.Tastes similar to some of Bedrock's zins. Bright red fruits, short finish. Will let the rest of these sit a little longer.

Deep garnet color. Nose of blackberry, leather, a hint of game and mineral. Touch of effervescence upon opening, which vanished after three hours in the decanter. Black fruit, spice, pepper, and a little black truffle. Great balance letting the mountain fruit reveal itself over time as the wine opened. Just enough oak to soften it and give it a rich mouthfeel. An outstanding wine and a spectacular value.

After a couple of hours uncorked (which I'm not really sure made a difference), the nose was quintessential CA syrah - meat, leather, salt air, dark fruit and baking spice. If you like savory, you could not ask for anything more. Just a hint of oak that in no way took away from what the fruit had to offer. Great structure with well balanced tannins on the finish, which lingered for quite a while. I don't think this needs any additional time in the bottle and can be enjoyed right now. I will say there was some secondary fermentation/gas present that was quickly dispensed with after a vigorous shake of the bottle. An absolutely incredible value at $20 that, honestly, rivals the best Sonoma syrahs I've had.

Black pepper, olive, and a little funk on the nose. Has a fresh, green streak on the attack, while the fruit comes across sweet and higher alcohol with rum like flavors.

Some oak still noticeable. Seems to have fleshed out since the last bottle I tried in August 2011, becoming more full-bodied. Verging on becoming too heavy, with a viscous and thick mouthfeel.

Vigorously decanted for about an hour. Big ripe plummy nose. Super-ripe fruit in the mouth almost covers some serious tannins. Tasty stuff. Probably better in 3-5 years, but tasty now with steak.

Coffee aroma. Taste of black cherry and blackberry, with a decent level of acdity. Also has a hint of a leather taste to it - not intruding on the fruit, just a nice complement. Very good QPR here.

Phenomenal.

A Bunch of Wines on a Saturday Afternoon: I could not wait to open a bottle. This is young but delicious. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. Shimmering bright. The nose is black raspberries, slightly earthy, black pepper. Sweet black raspberry fruit on the palate. Much bigger/fruitier than I was expecting for Sonoma Syrah. Wonderful texture. A steal at $25.

Drinking remarkably well in its youth, the tannins are perfectly ripe and the medium plus acidity carries on the pure black fruit flavors. Finish extends with sweet toasty oak notes. I love Bedrock..and this is the best wine under $20 that I've had in a long time.
