Glossy, sleek dark cherry colour almost to the rim. Expressive nose discernible above the rim of a standard Bordeaux glass - slightly candied aromas of violets, liquorice root, little pepper, plums and something more savoury. Fresh, dry entry, texture feels somehow a little powdery, melting finish and floral aftertaste. Palate intense but less complex than nose. Mocha, plums. Very pleasant. Last glass was the most expressive after four hours of air.

An easy afternoon with close friends; Pomerol and St. Estephe (@ FD): In the bouquet a slightly mature wine with some pleasant barnyard and autumn forest impressions. A beautiful and well balance bouquet. On the palate autumn forest, cinnamon, red and dark berries, underbrush, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness and a good length. Really beautiful already and still a future of several 3 – 5+ years.

Very dark ruby, opaque. Expressive nose with sweet dark plummy fruit, sweet spice, vanilla and cedar cents, youthful and warm. Medium bodied with same flavour profile, perhaps a little warmer than I would like to. Good balance in the mid palate and medium length. 90-91

Dinner at Friends (Hong Kong): Popped and splash-decanted after some rather higher-class wines. Opaque purple-tinged black-red colour. Nose is smoked mackerel skin and it has an oily depth. Palate is medium acidity, lovely Pomerol roundness and lots of rich red plummy/strawberry fruit. Heady but not resonant and no real length. Quite alcoholic and a bit rustic. Might improve in a couple of years? But I wouldn't bet on it. 88.

Had visited the Château in 2015, so a nostalgic evening with this 2004.
+ Colour - red, with very light evolution at top end + Nose - floral, very herbal, ripe dark fruits, a bit "buttery" + Taste - very soft and elegant, some spice + Finish - very spicy, herbal, elegant, very long finish
A lovely made wine, perfect to pop and pour, don't think it will improve with further cellaring. Also, a bit too elegant for me. I like my Pomerol hard and brute !

Gazin rarely disappoints and the '04 is no exception. It doesn't stand up to the stellar 2005, but at this time, the 2004 is approaching smooth drinker with great notes of dark berries and tobacco. Great stuff.

Nose: Black Plum, Fig Paste, Cassis, Baking spice and chocolate. Palate: Initially showing some Plum, Quince and Black Cherry but opened really nicely to reveal some complexity and more soft fruit and spice notes. Finish: Thick and long in the mouth with great layers. Big dose of oak influence.
Four years since I last tasted this, and it has evolved nicely. Shares a boarder with Petrus, so this may be as close as I get to that famed piece of land.

Beautiful nose of mocha (though less pronounced when tried in 09). Cherry and tobacco on the palate - medium bodied but with nice, balanced tannins. Enjoyable without being sensational. Personally think its in a great drinking window right now and wouldn't hold for longer than a year or two.

Old World Blind Tasting >$40 (Bin 75): Dark core chocolate with dull garnet rim; tons of green pepper, red currant, spice, cranberry, Christmas fruitcake, dried fruit; perfumed, plum, soft with good texture and structure, cigar, tannins kick in on the finish, cedar; good.

Consistent with prior two year notes, nose coming around with some added maturity, tobacco and leather. Palate showing the '04 vintage, black fruit nice but not deep and rich for a Pomerol. Still a high quality wine.

No formal notes, just impressions. Popped and poured. Fruit and tannin are in balance, oak plays a supporting role. Not a knockout but absolutely in it's prime. We drank side by side with an 09 Montrose, and that was all oak and tannin comparably.

This opaque red/garnet wine was tasted in double-blind fashion, having kindly been provided to our tasting group by J.G. The nose shows muted aromas of black fruits, herbs and minerals. Full-bodied on the palate, with tart acidity, medium rustic tannins and well-integrated alcohol (listed as 13%). There is a distinct "green" element on the palate which carries through to a long but astringent finish. I'm not sure about this one...it appears that it is the product of fruit which was not fully ripe. I am not sure if the fruit will outlast the tannins. That said, I would give it at least another three years to see if there is improvement as the tannins simmer down and the nose opens up. Drink 1/15-12/22.

Better than last year. Elegant black fruits and plums, vanilla, mocha on nose. Tannins have melded nicely on this right bank wine, with blackberries, wood, spice. Very comparable to the Bravante merlot tasted alongside, but a touch less pronounced finish.

Nose: Super deep nose of Plum, Blackberry, Cassis and some Licorice. Round and perfumed nose. Palate: Enters with a bold dark fruit attack that mellows out to show red fruits, mineral and clay soil. Full bodied with nice taninis remaining at this point. Finish: Plum and blackberry are persistent. Great bordeaux.

Pomerol AOC - Good berries nose, warm and welcoming. Attack is smooth, and develop into intense sweetness in mid-palate, almost as if sugar was added. Sweet, rounded - very enjoyable (to me at least), not for those hardcore left bank tradionalists (8.8/10) . http://sgbordeaux.blogspot.com/2011/04/gazin-2004.html

Spicy mocha nose with a bit of plum. Palate is a touch astringent with prominent drying tannins that become more prominent on the finish. Delicious plum notes dominate, with a repeating mocha and scorched earth note on the finish. Solid, delivers but does not over achieve. Still has plenty of tannins to resolve.

Nice violet-ruby color. Aromas of blackberries, cherries, oak, and wood. Palate is sound with blackberries, with stark minerality. Some more smoky raspberry elements with slight liquor on the back end. Did not get any typical Pomerol notes like the Le Gay I had earlier this year. Solid.

From double magnum; dinner at Gene and Judy's house. Opened and decanted about 2 hours before dinner. A beautiful purple-red color, with no signs of age. Aromas of dark fruits, chocolate, lilly and spice. Medium-bodied, with good structure, depth, balance, and focus. Probalby drinking perfectly from regular bottle, but will likely evolve and improve in larger formats for many years to come.

Dark ruby-purple. Attractive nose with sweet dark cherry, plums, berries, cinamon and raspberry. Mid-full bodied, round, with soft tanins (especially compared to the 2004 Tertre Daugay and the 1988 Talbot with which it was drank alongside), opulent fruit, balancing acidity and a long finish. Very enjoyable.

Found this bottle just yesterday at a French countryside supermarket (at a very reasonably price!). Popped and poured today with a roasted chicken. Fairly dark for a Pomerol. Very forthcoming on the nose. More powerful than expected, but smooth with soft (but distinct) tannins and notes of cedar. Will definitely improve in the years to come.

compared with previous vintages I found this Gazin with a significantly less intense colour. Watery purple. There was little aroma and the taste was similarly disappointing with virtually no spice that has been so evident in previous vintages - notably the 2000. As the bottle progressed the wine failed to open any more . Faint black-currant with little follow through. Not unpleasant but I hope will improve with another try in 6m

8/10 - Lots of dark fruit and oak. Ripe concentrated juicy flavours. For some reason, felt a lack of elegance compared to the earlier tasted Couvent de Jacobsin 2005. Tannins were very slightly rough around the edges and the wine tasted a tad disjointed. Each of the aspects in themselves were great, but the tannins did not hold everything together seamlessly. Still, enjoyed the wine a lot.

assis, dark cherries, earth and some cigar. Smooth on the palate with earthy notes. Firm tannins present but palate seems to lack structure and weight which is likely due to the vintage.

I want to suggest one be cautious in buying this wine, and taste from the store selection as always before stocking up. Last spring, 2009, this was my favorite
wine available locally. It was young dark rich full flavored and seemed to need time to fully ripen, although after decanting it was delightful for drinking.
I proudly provided two bottles for the head table at a dinner for a famous speaker at our university and it was a hit. I bought all available and drank it all,
even sharing some with a fine young winemaker.
This year another local store "found" another case after cleaning out the warehouse, and I started to buy it, but stopped with 6 bottles.
The first one opened was completely mature, almost but not quite too much so, full and rich but beginning to taste slightly old,
certainly not to be kept much longer unless you like old wine.
It's still good and we drank the whole bottle, but my wife stopped with some left in her glass, the sure fire sign it is not really good.
I enjoyed it definitely less than last year, when I bought it from a store that keeps its wine unusually carefully, in a cool small store, but it is not bad enough to warrant a return.
The 1999 Gazin I bought from still a different store this month was completely over the hill, and deserved returning, even though six months ago bottles from the
better store were perfect. The 2005 I drank from yet another store was undrinkably tannic and I am storing the second one of those for as long as I can.
Thus my experience with Chateau Gazin so far is that it is one of the most variable wines I have ever drunk.
One almost needs to rate the stores as well as the wines in this hobby, for the score to be meaningful to the reader,
and I note many here do say where the wine was drunk at least, if not bought.

Lots of funky overture on the nose. Almost burg ass-ness. Soil , earth and dusty road. Kinda backwarded in style with lots of stemmy notes but fruits are still quite modern with plummish berries framed by woodyness. Finishes with bitter milo powder tannins.

Dinner at Thai Gold Cafe (Sunshine Plaza, Singapore): From a 375ml. Popped and poured - a little too young for that, but this still showed as a pretty nice wine in a modern style. Served blind, I would have guessed Californian Merlot on the nose. Ripe plums, funky, dusty earth, some flowers, rather attractive, but all with a heavy cloak of oaky cocoa notes and brambly wood thrown on top. Palate was rather more restraint. Nice plums and cherries, well balanced with acidity, plenty of well-shaped but still firm tannins finishing in bittersweet woody notes and cocoa. With time, spice notes strated emerging. Decent length, but a wash of alcohol at the finish prevented me from liking the wine even more. But as a whole, it was a very decently, modernly styled right bank. Probalbly drinkable now with a lengthy decant, but I do think it needs time to hit its stride - I would give it another 5 years at least. 89-90 for now.

Dinner at Le Bec-Fin, paired with the 2nd half of the tasting menu. Ordered at the beginning of the meal and decanted approximately 1 hour prior to consumption. Youthful purple core, turning to red at the edge. A lovely bouquet, offering up scents of ripe dark fruits, cedar, fennel and a hint of the forrest floor. Medium-bodied, with good fruit, fine concentration, a still-youthful tannic grip, but well balanced. This wine will likely improve over the next 5 years.

Early Dec 2007: dark purple ink color; even after prolonged airing restrained dark fruits aromas/flavors; smooth and round, with a velvety on the palate; full body.
Over the years I gained some experience with younger and middle-aged Gazins. They always had that restrained bouquet while on the palate they offered an astonishingly smooth and silky texture. Don’t know if they will open up their bouquet with more age (+20-25 years) eventually?

Tasted at a wine shop's free tasting in St Emilion Village

assis, dark cherries, earth and some cigar. Smooth on the palate with earthy notes. Firm tannins present but palate seems to lack structure and weight which is likely due to the vintage.

Dark purple with a nose of light fruit and a bit of spice. Medium bodied and balanced with red fruit on the palate and hints of chocolate and vanilla on the finish. Nice surprise.....I liked it.
