Same bottle as Melvin. Quite evolved for 1996. The 1985 Jadot Bonnes Mares had more life to it than this one. My personal feeling not the best storage given the 1997 last year was so vibrant.

Mainly Vosne and Chambolle GCs: Slightly cloudy in colour, nose was not completely clean with some old-school funk. Hedonistic, plummy fruit with prominent acidity. Good, but not at the same level as the epic ‘97 last year.

Grand Cru performance! More generous and less nervy/racy than many other ‘96s (for me) at present time; loads of umami richness coupled with dark forest wood/soil scents, lovely graphite-type minerals and iron type presence in the mouth. Very Bonnes Mares but in no way lacking “fineness.” Muscular? Yes. in no way hardened or austere. Fabulous showing and I suspect air time helped this show better than other “middle age” burgs.

Very dark fruited and highly aromatic nose showing boysenberry, graphite, nice sweet vs. savory complexity, umami vs. chocolate. Remarkably youthful still, acidity characteristic of the vintage makes for a long finish. 94+

Bottle on NYE was so good I decided to open another on new year's day! Again, dark colour but noticeable bricking this time. Slightly odd mixture of soft, lactic attack combined with somewhat pinched finish. Still plenty of the regal dark red and black fruits of the previous evening’s bottle but without the glorious harmony.

One of the best red burgs I can recall having. Opened and left bottle to sit for 2 hours before serving. Dark to the rim. Inviting nose of fresh red and black fruits. Perfect balance on the palate with intense attack and long finish. Utterly noble and delicious. Shame we had to share it between 4 of us as it disappeared very quickly!

Decanted on pop n' pour. A distinctly smoky, funky and earthy note on the aromas. Still so much density and structure to this wine. Drank over ~4 hours. Last glass was the best. Give this more time or lots of air.

Out of town friends @ Republique; 7/31/2019-8/6/2019: The 1996 Jadot had that really weird stewed fruit and funky meat nose that so many 1996 Jadot had (no clue what was going on in bottle. One bottle would be clean, next would be funky) but it quickly blew off that funk. Palate was also shut down initially, rustic and coarse with tannin and acid. But unlike the Drouhin it flipped the script positively. It gained this rich long powerful dark fruit and that coarseness turned into a structured weight frame. A compelling meatiness and spice started to blossom as it built complexity in the wine. Really good at the end of the night.

Took the wine from my cellar directly to the restaurant . It was too cold when I served it and initially the tannins were a little too apparent and it came across as a little coarse. Over about an hour the wine came around and was really quite nice with subtle hints of dark fruit, earth, mushroom and spices with a silky texture a very nice finish. This wine really came on with some air. I should have opened it an hour before we drank it.

2006 and 1996 Jadot Bonnes Mares (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Nose of black cherry, sweet and sour fruit, hint of red cherry and barnyard, and day old rain on the forest floor, same on the palate, opened nicely during the 3 hour lunch, much nice and richer than the 2006 today, and a long, long finish and pleasant aftertaste that made you want another pour. Gave another bottle a try after the first in the half-case was corked and this was one just about perfect for Jadot Bonnes Mares. Perfectly intergrated tannins, tons of earthy funk, but still eminating some vibrant fruit although relatively muted at this stage. This is textbook aged burgundy, right in the window with another couple years left.

Dinner at S.K.Y. (Chicago, IL): This is a killer bottle of Jadot -- there's so much raw material here to sift through. It definitely shows elements of the vintage with the heightened acidity and slight tartness, but at the same time, the sheer power of Bonnes Mares shines right through. Clearly a burly, powerful wine, but still with some red fruit on the nose and palate. For my taste, mature and ready.

1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The First Session (Clarity - Vienna, Virginia): Very youthful expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe sweet red fruit with a hint of black, cherry compote, black cherry, blackberry, light caramel, coconut, a hint of sweet spices and limestone mineral. Beautiful harmonious palate, very finely layered concentrated sweet red and black fruit, silky, polished and fluid, bright acidity, nicely resolved tannins and a long dark cherry and mineral driven finish. I have often found the 90s Jadots to be a bit rustic and murky but not here. It remains very youthful and can easily improve for another decade or more. Excellent showing.

Nose had black fruit, tobacco, soil, herbs and spice. Palate was very structures and firm with high acidity. When it was served blind, no one could have gussed the vintage as it was so young. While many 96 showed tart fruit, the Jadot BM had a beautiful sweetness with dusty tannins. Just entering its drinking window. It will age well.

A meaty structured dark fruited wine with a ferrous background. Soil more than fruit, full bodied, yet poised and beautiful proportioned in its large frame. Dark cherry, iron, and soil and with great depth and power waiting to emerge with more bottle age. Youthfully powerful, structured, serious wine with a great future. Continued to improve the whole night. 94+

Brilliant wine, one of the best examples I've had from this vineyard, and a reminder that I should probably seek out more Jadots from here. There's power and depth here in spades; layers of rich dark berried fruit, earth, light florality, and more mature savouriness all coming together seamlessly on a frame that's medium weight and very polished texturally. 1996 Jadot Horizontal (Chicago, IL): An easy win for the wine of the flight for me. This is just an incredibly complex and powerful wine, with tons of perfumed red fruit on the nose and palate. Tons of fresh red berries on the palate here, lending a really nice sweetness to the broad and powerful palate. This is fully resolved, and there is lots of complexity and the resolution gives this a softer edge that makes this really approachable. Again, a wine without sharp edges, and an incredible effort from the estate.

This wine has matured very nicely since I had it about 3 years ago. Decanted about four hours before dinner yet the wine kept putting on weight and complexity well past the start of the dinner. Bonnes Mares (Walnut Creek, Ca.): Blind tasting of two 1996 Bonens Mares with Mike. Acker Merrall 1996 Burgundy Dinner (L2O - Chicago IL): Almost always one of my favorites from Bonnes Mares, the Jadot 1996 didn't disappoint tonight. Open and decanter slightly over one hour. Black fruit with incredible spice on the nose as well as hints of espresso in the background. Ripe black cherry and blackberry flavors with some anise and clove. Lots of energy and power. This still has a long way to go and will keep improving, then its big tannins with lots of acid will keep this wine vibrant and exciting for probably another 25+ years.

What a surprise this wine was. Opened about three hours before dinner and decanted. Rim showed some age; colour was medium intensity. Initially , the wine showed a forward nose of red cherry and mineral notes. The palate was quite disjointed and acidity and tannins dominated. Finish was long. By dinner time the wine seemed to pull tother some ; the fruit became more complex, mix of red cherries and raspberries, mineral notes and touch of leather. The palate showed the same elements as before, just more subdued. About ½ bottles was left at the end of the night in the decanter. By next night the wine put on weight and the palate was totally integrated, balanced and complex; long finish. This wine needs a few more years , maybe five to ten.

Surprising how open and drinkable this was, even though it wasn't very developed. Enticingly meaty aroma made an interesting contrast with the Lignier, which was more gamey while this one was more beefy. Rich, glossy, vibrant fruit on the palate, not constrained by acid or tannin like so many other '96s, but primary just the same.

Black fruit with incredible spice on the nose as well as hints of espresso in the background. Ripe black cherry and blackberry flavors with some anise and clove. Lots of energy and power. This still has a long way to go and will keep improving, then its big tannins with lots of acid will keep this wine vibrant and exciting for probably another 25+ years.

nearly lovely now, just needs a little time, plenty of fruit to balance the strong acidity
