Earthy, mature and cellar tones in both scent and taste. Complex and enjoyable for the trained taster. I was surprised that the aging process had progressed so far. I expected it to be much more fruity. Drink now

very similar to my 2019 note - dark red with tawny orange rim - fascinating nose of dark cherries, earth, leather, and spices - full bodied rich mature mouth and not at all past its prime - tannins resolved, still high acid but inconspicuous with food - shorter finish than previously noted with acid predominating - as other tasting notes have commented, Neri is not an elegant Brunello but rather a big powerful expression of sangiovese - this bottle is an excellent example of mature Neri - at its peak now if you like aged brunellos in which young ripe fruit has been replaced with an array of more complex aromas and flavors

Pnp. Garnet with almost no bricking towards a translucent rim. Just a touch oxidative on the nose but certainly less than the 07 Tenuta Nuova, which makes sense as the Etichetta Bianca is a more classic style and apparently from cooler sites too. Fully resolved tannins on the palate, acidity is nicely integrated too. Not a great Brunello and aromatically fairly muted but not bad in the context of the hot vintage. Drink up.

Spicy scents of nutmeg with scorched molasses, and fantastic sweet scents of red licorice. Flavors of oak, leather & tobacco, with black figs, some caramelized onions and roasted eggplant. A long, dry finish with excellent tannin. Perfect cork; heavy sediment; deep red brick / slightly brown color, and no flaws were detected. Extraordinary pairing with a Caprese salad using an aged Fig balsamic vinegar and EVOO – and don’t forget the fresh garlic. It’s absolutely fabulous!

Great upside surprise. Really good. Didn't decant given some other notes, was closed up at first but only for <30 min. Could tell it was going to be good just from the nose ... good weight, balanced, fine tannins, nice finish. Not quite as good on day 2 and a touch dry on the finish. Bought this in Italy for 30 euros in 2012 and wish I'd bought a case.

Several others have had bottles not consistent with the predominant view on this wine. This is my 3rd and last bottle, and it is not in good shape. I sense oxidation, but it may just be the barrel has left a very bad mark on the wine. In any case, this wine does not compare to the first 2 bottles, one of which I rated 93 in 2014. No score due to the uncertainty of the problem.

Drinking incredibly yummy right now. Starting to show significant age, but still also has a "candy" sense to it. Color has turned to a beautiful brick. First night of Coronavirus food storage meals. Wish us luck.

Opened, but did not decant, 1 hour before dinner. Brownish red color. Shoe leather, dried cherry and herbs (lavender/rosemary) on nose. Full body, high acidity, medium tannins and long finish. Palate flavor profile was consistent with the nose. In my opinion this wine is on the way down. Rated this a 93 in '15 and probably more 90+/- today.

Drinking well. Can't imagine it getting better, and may be slightly past its peak, but still solid. Opened a Carlisle zin after finishing the bottle on day 2, which came across as much fruitier than usual and reinforced the brunello being more balanced even if the fruit was a bit muted/faded.

After reading the last review and also not having a great experience with the last bottle i recently drank, I decided to open my last bottle of this wine. I didn’t want to open it for others so I waited until I was having a desire for home alone consumption along with some good jazz.
Any way, I am finding that this bottle is not so bad. In fact, I am finding it to be quite enjoyable. So this leads me to believe that there is a lot of bottle variation among the rank and file.
This bottle is showing some nice dark red fruit, including some bing cherries, some vanilla, cedar, and a medium finish.

Dark garnet color with a browner shade. By look very mature. Nose with leather, cedar and some herbal notes. On the palate dark berries, toasted oak and quite much acidity, especially in the finish. Nice wine, but surely for food. Reading my notes from last time tasted (2 years ago) I must correct that it is not necessarily time to drink up. It is enjoyable now, but I also see it holding and maybe even developing for next 10+ years. Drank over two days and it was performing most balanced at the second day. The acidity by then had a better grip round the fruit and oak sweetness. 88-90P

This Brunello is definitely getting too old. It has been cellared properly, but now it is getting tired. Still, it is enjoyable to drink with notes of dusty cherries and mellow tannins.

This is my second bottle and again, I’m not sure if it’s corked or over the hill. I actually don’t think it’s the former, and that’s not a good sign. There’s some hidden fruit and leather, but I can’t get past the off-putting aroma. Tons of sediment. Drink now (or dump). The two bottles I’ve had make me want to write off this producer, despite previous positive experiences.

Fom a Brunello tasting covering 2004 to 2008. Deep brick colou, but deeper than many of the others in the tasting. Tobacco and warm brick dominate the nose at first, then giving way to a fruit like dried cherries and dried roses. Sweet and full bodied attack, then the tannins and acidity sets in , really cleaning the mouth, and then - when the tannins are calmed - a beautiful fresh fruit almost towards raspberries emerges. Quite different from the others in the tasting, more fresh and more on the red fruit line than the dried cherries line. Amazingly long. Not a blockbuster, but a more elegant and refined type of Brunello. I would have thought that 07 should have been on the other side, more jammy, but is is really not. Wonderful wine, perfect now, but will keep for ages. Will this wine ever die?

This is always a very good Brunello, but it still does not manages to excite me as it ages. At its peak now, beginning to dry out somewhat. Deep brick colour, almost "thick" in its appearance. Fascinating nose of dried fruit, tobacco, tea, warm bricks and newly baked bread. Full bodied, high in acidity, rather dry tannins and a fruit that is rather modest. Dry and almost tart finish, but very, very long. Has it something to do with the extraction here? This wine is alway extremely impressive when young, but underperformes as it ages. Drunk together with an ordinary Col d'Orcia from the same year, a wine that usually seems much more tart and meager in its youth, but was more sweet now. Strange.

A typically robust Brunello profile (see previous notes), though tannins were much better integrated than in previous bottles, offering a softer more rounded experience. Fantastic.

My new favourite brunello at this QPR. 60 min slow decant in large glasses, drank at right temperature, such a pleaser. Sweet notes of cherry, earth and a good tannins structure. Best enjoyed with food such as soft cheeses, anitpasti or light meat based pasta.

Contrary to many of the previous reviews, this is not over the hill - it’s barely ready to drink. Enjoyable now, but I’d say wait another 2-3 years to give this a go again. Very generous nose of red cherries, sandalwood, and earth. Palate is still fairly backward, with burly, mouth coating tannins, but perhaps starting to give way to the lush Sangiovese fruit beneath, red fruited acid, red cherry and earth, yes, but also blackberry and plum spicecake, showing well-balanced and refined oak influence (and I tend to be very sensitive to overoaking). Finish decent but not memorable. 91+

Some earthy notes, with very little fruit. Tannins are still rather prominent. Definitely showing its age. It looks like the pro reviews suggesting a later drinking date were wrong. Disappointing.

Began drinking after PnP, but threw rest in a decanter. It did not need any extra air - it was drinking well almost immediately after pouring into the glass. Very different than my last bottle. Very expressive nose of leather and maraschino cherries. Palate was similar. Some signs of aging and some secondary characteristics present. Paired well with Bolognese.

At first impression seem downhill, but then opens up. After an hour a very pleasant nose with leather and herbs. In the mouth dark fruit and toasted oak, but also much dry tannin. In the beginning a bitter finish, that ease up a little bit after some time in the glass and becomes quite pleasant. But not much complexity nor finesse. A wine that should be accompanying food (steak, lamb, game). I think I will drink the remaining bottles within maximum 2 years from now

This is always a hefty type of Brunello, never on the very elegant side. So is the case with this wine as well. Having reached optimal maturity it still boasts a dark, almost purple core. Nice and typical aromas of ripe cherries, plums/prunes, some smoke/graphite and a touch of dry, warm wood. Intriguing. Full bodied, almost brutal in the fist attack. Taste of cherries, chocolate and prunes with very present tannins and nice acidity. The downside is a very present feel of alcohol that gives an almost burning aftertaste. Ten years old, the wine is not capable of hiding that the alcohol is too high in relation to the other components needed for a great wine. Very nice with a bloody piece of cote de boeuf, however. Drink it now and the next five years with some red meat.

Just ok - did not decant and fruit was hidden behind tannins. With about 45 minutes of air, some fruit notes shone through. Not sure if this needs more time, or if its past its prime.

Last of 6 bottles, all drank over the past 6 months. 4 of the 6 were open for business and drank very well, albeit they seem to have aged quickly. No reason to hold this any further - the wine is definitely at peak.
This bottle, however was flawed and tasted pretty much like vinegar. I poured it down the sink. Seems to be some pretty wide bottle variation from the producer that makes me nervous about my stash of 06 Cerretalto and 07 Tenuta Nuova...
In the future I'll probably invest my Brunello $ with a different producer.

Clear, tawny garnet. Lovely complexity and expression on the nose, showing concentrated dried cherry, spice and leather. Evocative, perfumed and quite rich. Abundant structure on the palate, with still notable tannin and high acidity. I still think this has too much wood treatment, and that Casanova age in small barrique rather than botti, which shows in the tannin levels 10 years on. Objectively a very pleasant wine and paired well with food. However, for the Brunello purists, heavy use of oak remains controversial.

Over the hill. As was the 2008. Not perfect storage, but I've opened multiple bottles of different wines from the same or older vintages purchased at the same time and stored together and they've been fresh as a daisy. So, I'm thinking this is simply a wine meant to consume earlier than most Brunellos. Will try my '06 next (and last), but I don't have high hopes. Drink up if you have 'em.

Classical red color, not too dark. Cherry, sweet flavors in the nose. Mouth filling, pretty straight. Lingers nicely, quite long. Very balanced. Wonderful now, just open the bottle a few hours before drinking. I guess the current great drinking window will uphold for some years, but no need to cellar this extensively.

A second bottle of a cloudy, madeira smelling wine. The fruit, if one can get past the smell, is actually a sweet black cherry, nutty and deep, but there is clearly something wrong with at least this batch. Disappointed.

Very mixed feelings on this. Dark crimson, and opens with a rounded, rich Brunello nose, showing dark cherry, leather, sweet spice and hints of coffee bean. Good complexity. The palate is rounded, complete and supported with good levels of acidity. However, my bugbear remains the tannins, which are drying and angular; very pronounced. At nearly 10 years old, these should have integrated and become much softer. Even on young Brunellos, I don't come across this level and style of tannin, so it is not typical. In fact, they leave a sharp, rough sensation which lingers. My guess: Casanova makes excessive use of barriques and new oak, which is also suggested by the colour profile. I much prefer styles involving short bursts in barrique and then mostly, if not entirely, in larger botti. Try again next year.

Enjoyed this wine at a BYOB restaurant with rack of lamb. It paired perfectly with the lamb and steak. Only had a 30 min decant, which was a problem. Very tannic to start. This wine needs a good 2-3 hour decant and perhaps a few more years in the cellar. By the end of the meal, it had started to open up. Deep red in color. Tobacco, leather, dark fruit on the palate. An excellent wine.

Decanted for 3 hours. Tons of plum on the nose - I can sense the shift from raisins since I last tasted it in 2013. I get a vegetal sense that at first was unpleasant, but integrated nicely towards the 2nd half of the bottle. Neither overwhelmed with alcohol (14,5%) nor tannins. Good acidity that went very well with lamb chops and wild rice. Has good aging capacity but is ready to drink with a 2-3 hour decant.

Dense, rich and still quite tight. Feels like it is still at least 3-5 years from drinking properly. Tannins are very pronounced and too drying at this stage. Great acidity. Has all the ingredients not only to last, but to unfurl into something much more elegant and lifted once it has come together properly.

I'm sure this will be drinking well for many years to come. For me, it's acidic and a bit harsh, otherwise very good. It smells highly alcoholic, but on the palate I get bold, dark fruits, such as black cherry, plum, and black currant. There are notes of pepper, vanilla, anise, tobacco, and cedar. Smokey and a bit toasty with a long, complex finish.

Stunning. Drinking wonderfully, sure it could go much longer but nice to appreciate it now. Bouquet of berries with mint, slight musty overtones. Taste from get go - classic winemaking. Pure class. Flavours first, oak second, tannins last. Said it before, but I could drink brunello all day every day and never get sick of it. All the flavours of brunello plus some, and something I can't quite work out. Maybe licorice flavours

Deep garnet in color, exhibiting youthful aromas of violet, red/black cherry, blackberry and blueberry accompanied with notes of leather, tobacco, dark chocolate, smoke and vanilla. Dry, full bodied with medium levels of acidity and alcohol; a harmonious, well balanced choreography of aforementioned flavor profiles is elegantly displayed. While quite impressive today; fine grained tannins still retain significant grip on the finish and should benefit nicely from additional cellaring for further integration. Excellent!

Took a while to open up, and this probably needs a few more years in the cellar. Nose is slightly developed with perfumed notes of jasmine flowers, paint bucket, ceder wood, soy sauce, some oak, a little funk, and lots of red berries, cherries and raspberries. Medium acidity, medium body and noticeable tannins that are showing a bit of maturity. Medium+ intensity and a medium+ finish.
This is really nice and well made. Not the most exciting, but drinking well right now. Could probably rest for another 3-5 years.

Decanted for just over an hour before tasting. Medium garnet core, slightly bricking rim. On the nose; black fruit, leather, sous bois, varnish and caramel. On the palate; cool fruit, good concentration and firm structure. Served at the right temperature this time. Enjoyable, but doesn’t make me jump in my seat. Still young, though, and will probably benefit from another three to four years on its back (89-91 points).

Decanted for roughly two hours before tasting. Deep garnet core, pink rim. Black cherries, dried autumn leafs, varnish and leather on the nose and palate. Modern in style with a fairly high level of extraction, but still just enough structure to get away with it. Good, but not terribly exciting – seems to lack the complexity and finesse to compete with the best. I must, however, admit that the wine was served way too warm, which definitely affected the whole experience negatively. I’ll thus refrain from scoring and do the producer justice by serving my last bottle under optimal conditions.

Crimsom colour. Intense nose of ripe sour cherries, sweet licorice, menthol, and roasted chestnuts. The fruit appears a bit candied. The palate is not revealing much at this stage, it seems to have shut down while sitting in the glass for 45 minutes. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and bone-dry tannins. There is a focused core of iron minerality which is very pure. Nice lenght. Difficult to estimate how this will turn out. The palate is not yet developed at all, and despite the ripeness of the vintage this seems to hold a solid backbone which needs time to soften. Could have mistaken this for a 2006 due to heavy structure. Will put away remaining bottles for minimum 3 years.

Dark garnet color. Typical Brunello nose with amazing purity of red and dark cherry fruit, damp earth, esspresso coffee and floral scents. Referred to as the "White Label" or "Etichetta Bianca" this offers bold notes of ripe blackberries, vanilla, exotic spices and even hints leather, molasses and lightly toasted oak. It displays plenty of depth, concentration and finesse. The full plush texture gets support from well-integrated acidity which provides a spark of energy and lift as it approaches the long supple, yet firm finish. This can be approached on the younger side thanks to the ripe concentrated fruit, but will be at its best in about 4-6 years from now. (Best 2013-2025)

Dinner with Mark Roberson of Goedhuis (Jade Palace, Forum Galleria): Way, way too young, but there was definitely quality in the wine. Tonight though, this was as much about potential as it was about pleasure. Lots of oak still present on the nose, with drifting scents of coconut and caramel playing alongside deep, ripe aromas of creme de cassis and liquered cherries, and touches of earth and dried herbs that somehow still managed to speak of Tuscany from amidst the oak. I liked the palate rather more. Here too we got big, ripe fruit, with black cherries and plums at the fore, but there was a bright purity to this in spite of its ripeness, and a lovely depth right across the attack and into the midpalate. Towards the finish, the wine's more structural components of fine tannins asserted themselves more, giving a bit of chew on the back-palate, where a nice, smoky earthiness and a twist of orange peel accompanied the black fruited notes. Good stuff, but I would wait a decade or more on this one before broaching it again.

A very well made and enjoyable wine. A classic brunello nose is followed by a succulent, extracted fruit that is now tightly framed by tannins. With all the right components, this wine is a bit monolithic now, just hinting at its potential. I actually appreciated this wine for not being entirely forward -- thinking of a slender and powerful race horse warming up on a track. Recall being very impressed by the '06 and '07 Tenuta Nuova, but this white label is a joy all by itself.

Decanted and poured, this wine gave a very good showing with aromatics of earth, spice, leather and black fruit. On the bouquet and palate the wine shows a somewhat rustic personality. The color is a medium to dark ruby. The medium (full) bodied palate shows good balance but the somewhat chunky tannins keep the wine from giving a more polished impression. This drinks well now and should improve with 2 to 4 years of additional bottle age.

Still a youngster that needs some time stashed away, at least for me to rise above average. It's dense and concentrated and definitely has the prerequisites to improve via cellaring.
Dark ruby red colour with a hint of brick red on the rim. The nose is open, youthful and intensive. Loads of ripe fruit and tobacco. The palate is rich with alcohol coming through. Good acidity with mouth-drying tannins. Fruit is mainly red but with some darker tones as well. Aftertaste is longish and slightly bitter. This wine leaves a warm feeling in the mouth.

From Wine Enthusiast: This 2007 Brunello is a big, opulent pleasure bomb with lavish layers, loaded thickly on top of each other: Chocolate fudge, dark cherry, blackberry preserves, rum cake, prune, exotic spice, pipe tobacco, cola, humus and leather. It shows huge personality, intensity and staying power, too. All that density is backed by solid tannins and a steady firmness. Hold 10–15 years.

Strange.

Excellent!

A nose of ripe black cherries, vanilla, leather, licorice and menthol which lead to much of the same on the sweet fruited palate along with a good dose of acidity that covers the mouth on the long polished finish.

Allowed to breath for 4 hours. Nice garnet color. Aromatic nose of leather, rose petals and some tar. Good up front acidity with some dark and red fruit, a hint of espresso and licorice, and a nice finish. Nicely balanced.

Typical of the vintage, with noticeably high alcohol (14.5%), supple tannins and moderate acidity. Forward and readily approachable, with a long aftertaste. Excellent to pair with meat dishes.

This is a really good brunello. Needs 2 hours in decanter to open then sings. Nice cherry fruit on palate finish shows great acidity. While there are more complex brunello, this scores for pure deliciousness.

Tasted at Dionysia Wine Fair, Athens, Greece. Medium garnet. Red cherry, violets, earthy and leathery scents on the nose. Medium-bodied and seamless with silky tannins, bright fruit and nice acidity. Long aftertaste. Surprisingly forward for such a young Brunello.

Eye: deep dark purple color with redness at the rim. Nose: cherries, vanilla, smoke, leather. Palate: solid fruit but great structure behind it so not a fruit bomb. Full body, held up well to tomato sauces and lemon/capers, nice long finish.
Consistent across 5 bottles throughout the week.

Montalcino visit June 2012; 6/8/2012-6/10/2012 (Montalcino): Medium ruby color. Expressive aromas of dark fruit, spices and some meat. Full bodied with huge mouth coating chewy tannins, balanced acidity and dark fruit. The finish is long and spicy. It is quite approachable right now, though still a bit fragmented on the palate. Give it some time if you drink it now, drink trough 2020.
One of the best QPR of my Brunello tasting in June 2012.
