Ken's 60th Birthday (Smyth - Chicago, IL): Side-by-side with the '00. Surprisingly, I found this to be just a notch or to behind the '00. No signs of over-ripe fruit or heat. Rather, this is impeccably balanced. Kept improving in the glass. And an exotic spice note, that I really liked, became more prominent with time. Seems to have plenty of acid to keep aging. Wonderful.

Ken's 60th Birthday (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Served alongside the 2000. Nicely spiced with apricot and poached pear. Excellent weight, good length. Less subtle or complex vs the 2000. Nicely fresh and balanced for the vintage.

Rich ripe nearly lush aromatically. A rich forward style, nice red apple, sexy pure And long. Sexy ripe pure and long. Quite pretty with an amazing flavor profile. Served along side the 2000, thus shows a bit more of the vintage ripeness and not quite as elegant, yet somgood.

Terrible vintage for white wine, it was WAY too hot. This had an odd nose of "persimmon," says Joel, "orange marmelade," which I detest. We both agree on that last point. On the palate, this is really not good. Serve this to your status-oriented friends who do not know anything about wine.

Paulee. Voluptuous with fruit and flint leaping out of glass. Lacked the acidity and tension to be top top, and veered sweet and ripe albeit still mineral. Persistent finish.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. An odd wine. I thought there a faint hint of acetone and wondered if there was some VA. Ken says it was much fresher when he first tasted the wine, which was ~30 minutes before poured for everybody.

Acker BYO Holiday Dinner (Tribeca Grille): The table generally agreed this was the best of the whites and I think if I was a white burg person I would have been inclined to agree. Even though not my style, I can appreciate the delicacy combined with a fairly long finish. I just don't love the flavor of chardonnay and this had it in spades. Showing very well.

Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne Vertical Dinner (Le Bernardin, New York): Intense and highly tropical nose with white flowers and honeydew melon. Quite perfumey. Some good matchstick sulphur present as well. Not oxidized but interesting iron and copper notes hanging around. Big and rich on the palate with ripe mango and stone fruit. Cereal grains and crisp wheat. Some of the '03 heat detectable although this wine showed pretty great. Finish was a little stunted if anything.

Executive Wine Seminar's: Coche-Dury vs. The Challengers: Tasted blind in a flight w the 2003 Bouchard Corton Charlemagne. Smells Like Coche - spicy and brown in register. Also roasted aromas here. Sweet and juicy on entry, but some floppiness on the mid-palate. The oomph covers over the flaws of the vintage a bit. Still I hate the 03 white burgs with a passion. I can't imagine paying the cost for a Coche Corton Charlie and ending up with this. Nose: 4/6, Palate: 3/6, Finish:3/6, Je ne sais quoi (wild card): 0/2 = 10/20 = 80/100. My Guess: Coche. My #1 of 2 for flight, didn't get the group rating.

Hint of ripeness comes thru the bitterness at the back of palate, but this is well put together nonetheless and very clean. (2236)

An Evening of Vinous Merriment and Majesty Among Friends (Craft, New York): Both the 2003 and 1990 tasted alongside it were very fragrant on the nose. Both were big round wines with prevalent oak and vanilla. More brute force than elegance. The '03 showed the signs of the very hot vintage.

Rich, round opulent. Fat, typical 03, atypical corton. Took 90 to 120 minutes to open, white flower (jasmin), white peach. Not quite enough structure

At the Union League with Clive, Bob and a group of friends; 3/26/2011-3/28/2011 (Union League Cafe, New Haven Ct.): For an off year, this wine was exuberant, not typically Coche, but very nice, rich in your face and enjoyable
