Stupendous value at $13 (Acker auction). Like a CdP at CdR prices--and it looks as though it was sold on release at not much more than I paid for it. But looking at the old reviews, I'm mystified, unless there was a lot of bottle variation--some people think it's over the hill, others that it's not ready to drink. It's certainly ripe and ready right now, still a lot of rich fruit overlying the spice and garrigue.

The bottle I had tonight exceeded my expectations! It was a symphony of color, aroma, and taste. Garrigue, dark, nicely resolved tannins, lingering acidity, long satisfying umami notes leaving me very happy. Very glad to have another bottle of this beautiful wine!

Well... I could either be influenced by the preponderance of mediocre reviews or... I could just tell you the truth about the wine. It. Is. Stunning.
Powerful, gutsy, satisfying, velvety, mulberry-earth aromas, fennel, iodine.... Janasse. Dark & rich... full bodied... beautifully balanced in a way that Beaucastel Coudoulet only hopes to be....
This is a CdR that delivers CdP value. Happy that I went long on 2010, but wishing I did same on 05, 06, 07, 09, 15, 16.....
If you -can- get it.... -do- get it.

This wine ranked near the bottom of 8 in the Southern France wine tasting. I have to say that this wine did live up to expectations. There was something off-putting on the nose that carried into the finish on the palate.

Continuing to develop and integrate, the tannins have blended in and are less astringent. Drinking very well, can be popped and poured, doesn’t need a long decant. Good length on the finish.

PnP at a restaurant, ready to go at opening, no decanting required. Resolved tannins, rich, brambly dark fruit and medium plus body. Forward and crowd pleasing at this stage and punching above its class for CdR.

Awesome wine for $23. Drinking beautifully. Fresh and clean. Delicious. Provençal herbs, garrigue. Graphite. Earth. Fairly complex. I always felt this wine would be better with age. 8 years in thus is better than ever. This competes well with many, many CdPs.

Have had the 2005 many times, as well as the 2010 - both classic vintages. In the glass it says "Australian GSM" - or maybe often Australia wants to say "Rhône". Big, beefy, meaty stuff. Thick, dense and chewy. Lacking acidity and the tannins are too soft now. This hasn't aged so well, and is arguably unbalanced - verging on the soupy, in fact. What a shame... It was good 3-4 years into its life, now becoming flabby. But some good fruit in there and still a certain amount of contained power.

PnP. Still pretty large scaled, but the fruit here appears more subdued than how I remember the last bottle. As mentioned last time, the Syrah here definitely has a strong influence. Anise, Provençal herbs, garrigue, lavender. Has grip. Fairly harmonious. Long finish.

This is a big CdRV that can compete with many CdP. 40%Grenache, 30% Syrah and 30% Mourvèdre. The Grenache %age here is pretty low and you can taste it as the Syrah has a lot of influence on the aromatics and taste of this wine. This a pretty refined and plush wine that carries its 15% abv well. This is in a nice drinking window now.

Beautiful Grenache brambly fruit that smoothly shifts to smooth bright fruit in the mid-palate, then finishes nicely with well balanced and well integrated tannin support structure. The flavors are rich and full. This wine is designed for food and fun. Drink up. The price at $20 makes this a great value, too.

A superb GSM blend that is a prime example of what made 2010 a great vintage in the Rhone. Made from a vineyard sharing the identical weather, soil, and large round surface rocks as great vineyards in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but just outside the boundary of that appellation. Deeply dark, effusively perfumed, rich and mouth filling, concentrated, caressing, and delicious. Thumped a top Australian SGM wannabe costing almost twice as much, and repeatedly trumped more famous and expensive wines from around the world when served with meals.

Started out a little on the harsh side, but after resting for an 1 hour it eased back and showed its stuff. Nice, round fruit. Grenache front end became smooth. Syrah middle was nice big even fruit. The finish was balanced and well integrated with the rest of the wine.

Aged well, and well aged. Janasse is one of the world's premier wine estates. It's hard to go wrong with a Janasse wine. The only challenge is determining the proper drinking window. This window is wide open.

Went over 3 weeks with vacuum pump & storing in fridge. Bloom at 2nd day, red dark fruit and concentrate, sweet & juicy, kept pleasant for the 1st entire week. Alcohol been showing up in 2nd week that cannot hide anymore behind the fruitful palate. Was fading out in week 3.

A superb Cotes du Rhone Villages with great balance. Dark cherries and raspberries, spicy, earthy, a bit of chocolate, really smooth high quality tannins that add structure, rather low acidity, alcohol levels are high but not perceivable, good length. Since last tasting, this wine has changed to the positive a bit. Still full bodied, lots of fruit, but luckily the bitterness in the end has disappeared a bit. It seems that this wine is really made for cellaring. Enjoyed it. Considering the given fruit and color I am sure the drinking window will not close soon. I am glad I bought two cases and still have lots of it.
Better than most Cote Du Rhone (Villages) I've had so far.

Amazing how different my perception is now. Bottle variation? Bad storage conditions? Change in a couple of years' time? I don't know, but apparently there was a distinct difference between what I saw then and what I see now, which is a wine with decent texture but pruny flavors.

Dark red --- Nose shy, elegant for a CdR, red fruit, nice wood notes, blueberries --- Palate smooth, like velvet, nice shy acidity, than an explosion of fruitiness, elegant wood notes and vivid acidity, cherries --- Finishes pretty long on its silky impression and fruitiness, some minerality, some herbs, uncovering its powerful roots at the end. I am surprised and impressed, expected an alcohol driven heavy CdR fruit bomb, but this Terre de Argile is light-footed, dancing in the morning sun while showing the full range of CdR beautiness and power. Very tasty.

Similar tasting profile as in my previous note. It still need some time before opening up, in the beginning there is some disturbing alcohol/oak bitterness which went away in the last glass, and will hopefully be totally gone with some further cellaring.

Big, dark, unmistakable Rhone varietals though the alcohol level and ripeness would lead you to believe this was new world, perhaps. Either way, a quality wine that I enjoyed, which is not shy at all!

Aging very well. The mouth-filling tannins are more rounded and integrated than previous bottles. Dark and dried fruits, earth, leather with a bit of cassis. Give it 45 minutes to soften. (Doris really enjoyed this wine)

Weak on opening, but improved markedly after an hour. Purple in color. Aromas and flavors of dried and dark fruit, with well integrated tannins. This drinks quite well for a 2010. good length on the finish with minimal complexity.

This has developed wonderfully over the past year. Deep flavors of plums, cherries, minerals, slight oak. The fruit is still bright but has matured and softened since last bottle a year ago. The tannins are balanced and integrating nicely. Can still hold but with 30-60 min decant this is delicious.

Did not like this as much as I did previously. It did have nice vibrant red fruits and some earth, but the tannins were pretty robust and they were slightly bitter. So this came across a bit rough to me. I will hold my remaining bottles for a while (wait 2-3 years and try again)

I guess in a great vintage like 2010, wines from smaller appelations in the Rhone valley deliver, which is true for this wine. The nose is full of herbs, bay leafes blueberries and raspberries. The wine is well balanced with good acidity, adequate length and smooth tannins, aromas of dark berries together with herbs and charcoal, some minerals in the finnish. It took some decanting to open up, so maybe I will wait a year or so for the next bottle, but don't wait too long, this cuvée is made for early drinking.

Color: Glass staining dark plum, almost black at the center.
Nose: Reticent. But what's there is very ripe, somewhat candied dark fruit aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and mulberry. There's also a bit of suede and some vanilla and toast from the oak. And alcohol.
Mouthfeel: Not as heavy as I would have thought, but plenty of concentration.
Palate: Exactly what the nose would lead you to expect. Super ripe dark fruit, some coffee/chocolate/vanilla notes, and heat on the finish. Not much tannin structure and not very long.
I didn't find much to like with this wine. Overdone, primary, and fatiguing.

I loved this wine. This kind of nose and fruit is usually not very appealing to me. But this one is perfectly made. More for the taste than for the nose. Put this and the Vieilles vignes in a pack of hundred other wines and I would recognize these two blind as typical Janasse wines. I also dont drink young wines at all but this one is perfectly ready although on the heavy side (15%). However, not overextracted / hot.
Bought it for 16€ in Düsseldorf. After tasting this I bought 12 more in a wooden Janasse case. Beautiful.

Tasted at the Wine Institute in New Orleans (WINO, which is a fabulous place if you have not been there-- 120 wines by the glass and a great environment). Thought this was an amazing wine for $20. The fruit is rich and thick (and almost kinda new world), but there is also good acidity and a bit of minerality. If you are looking for lots of garrigue and earth in your Rhones, this may not suit you. But it is delicious and a great value

Opened and poured, this wine gave a solid showing for its rich, youthful fruit and concentration. The aromatics show a variety of black fruits, spice and stone notes. Although the bouquet shows detail it does comes across as somewhat straightforward. The medium (full) bodied palate shows chunky concentration and rich dark fruits with enough tannins to give it sufficient concentration. This wine could improve with an additional year or two of bottle age.

Luscious, layered, concentrated with dark fruits, earth, smoke and bramble. Cassis in the background. Big, but so delicious. Tannins are smooth. I bought 3 cases and wish I had room for more. At $20 this is my Wine of the Year. Short but tasty finish. This knocked out the Arterberry Maresh 2009 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir, at the same price, and was the favorite of 3 out of 4. Day #2 - just as good as first day.

It's 2007 all over again, except it lacks some precision in the fruit. OK, it's almost as good, but by a hair. Dark fruits on the nose, corduroy tannins on the palate. It's big and not the cheapest CDR, but one of the best. It is a touch grapey at this point, and I suspect it will integrate better within a year. Mini CDP. Siskel & Ebert would have loved this wine.

A notch above the 2009? This is tremendous value. The wine is impressive (and made to impress), it needs a decanter and food. Janasse rocks in a style that is modern, with a focus on bright fruit, but not overly extracted or 'confituré'. Even though the style is modern, the wines seem to age well, although I prefer to drink them on the young side (except for the Chaupin and VV). See below for detailed tasting notes.

This is absolutely a wine to buy by the case(s). A real stunner for the money. Rich and delicious! Quite smooth and complex. Nicely concentrated flavors of spice and dark berries that blend seamlessly into a 45 second+ finish. This one would do well to sit in the cellar for a few more years. Very high QPR in the low $20's.

Fresh nose of garrigue, dark fruit and spice. Palate with concentrated dark fruit liquor, but bracing lively acidity. Somewhat course tannins. Lengthy sandlalwood and earthy finish, with repeating cherry liquor. Very nice CdR though painfully young. Looks like this will be terrific in 5yrs or so. 91-92 Tightened up and showed a little heat on night two. Still very enjoyable.

Not a typical CdRV, this one is big and bold. Very intense fruity and spicy GSM-like nose. Big in the mouth as well, perhaps even too big for my tastes. I happen to prefer a lighter style. However, it's got the balance and is likely to age well and gain some complexity. This is good value and I'm sure most people love this one, proved to be a hit among my friends. Drink now or keep for years.

Chateauneuf du Pape, France - Tasted at Domaine: Tasted with Isabel Sabon. Beautiful nose of dark berries, cassis, spices and forest. Forward and concentrated flavors of dark berries, cassis, woods and spices. A bit jammy but balanced by acidity. This is drinking well right now but Isabel recommended up to 2 more years aging. The nose showed a vibrant mix of ripe wild berries, blueberry jam, sweet spices, licorice, hints of vanilla and mountain herbs. On the palate it was rich and full bodied yet showed excellent acidity, which kept it in check and left a juicy sensation throughout. Crushed blackberry and spice saturated the senses yet a hint of heat detracted ever so slightly. The finish was long and juicy, showing pure ripe blackberry fruit.

Fantastic! Being a lover of the 2009 version of this cru-like cotes-du-rhone, I was impatient to discover the 2010. This wine is a very rich cotes-du-rhone that will be appreciated in its youth. It is structured with a nose of strawberries and blackberries. A touch of cinnamon underlines this nectar. Cellaring this beauty will be painful!

This wine ranked near the bottom of 8 in the Southern France wine tasting. I have to say that this wine did live up to expectations. There was something off-putting on the nose that carried into the finish on the palate.

Beautiful.

No formal notes so no score but I do remember it being very youthful and big for a CdR. Lots or rich dark fruit and very full-bodied. Probably should sit for at least a year.

Perhaps one of the best Cotes du Rhones I've ever had, and I've been seriously drinking wines since 1970. Nose, taste, aftertaste are all first class. Tremendous value! 92+

At Bonnie's. Bonnie and Nate both loved the wine. Nate: fruity, great nose. Long finish. Bonnie: Balanced, concentrated fruits. Delicious

A crowd pleaser. Comments were excellent. Needs 30-60 mins air. Still young.

Tightened up and showed a little heat on night two. Still very enjoyable.

Decanted for 2 hours. Dark and purple cherries on initial nose. Long dry blackberries on the finish. A great QPR wine that drinks well now and should be a nice short-term storage!

This is a huge wine by CDR standards - Australian like. Wonderful flavors but this desparately needs some time in the bottle to smooth out the rough edges. Wines of this size should not be released this young.

Dark berries, cassis, licorice and exotic spices on the enjoyable, fresh nose. Ripe fruit, intermingled with animal blood, licorice and exotic spices on the juicy palate; refreshed by cherry-like acidity. Excellent stuff.

I had read some rave reviews by media, and they are not off base. This is an excellent wine and amazing value at $20.
