class napa profile of dark fruits, spice and herbs. Full bodied but soft with excellent structure. This is drinking very well now but will certainly last several decades.

Beautiful Cab! Silky smooth and rich. This wine stored well and I think we opened it just at the right time. Decanted for a short time. Deep fruit flavor with a touch of cinnamon. Not overcome by tannins at all. This was one of the best Cabernets I’ve tasted.

June 29, 2021: Erik’s tasting with Derek and Jen. All 2009’s tasted blind. The Ridge Monte Bello was elegant and refined and for me was the wine of the evening TS97. Camus Special Select was a surprise 2nd with its signature silky taste and nose. TS96. Shader Hillside Select was a close 3rd, also silky and refined. I would have thought going in this would have easily beat the Caymus. TS95. Chappellet Pritchard Hill, which I love, came of a little rustic and higher alcohol compared to the others and I was shocked to discover came in last in my rankings TS94. All these wines are unbelievable on their own. A fantastic tasting experience.

Beautiful red fruit dominant cab, cherry, ripe raspberry, red currants, lead pencil, black tea, cinnamon and coffee grounds. Amazingly silky texture that coats your entire mouth, the tannins aren’t as big as I would have though given other recent notes, this wine is ready to go now and will be good over the next 5-7 years. I found this very similar to Greer.

Terroir-istes International - USA - California, Napa General (Cape Town Law offices): (Tasted Blind): A deep black garnet wine. Abundant blackcurrant aromas accompany graphite, cedar wood, Kendal mint cake, dried olives and tilled earth. As it opens, this shows as tertiary characteristics that indicate age yet also a striking sandalwood note, more reminiscent of Vaseline! The wine is complex and full-bodied on the palate but generous with port-like qualities and old, dry wooden casks, adding savoury old-world nuances. The mid-palate sees the prominence of olives, pencil shavings, sour cassis and candy. Structurally, the tannins feel tight and earth-coated, whilst the acid is bright and gives lift. It does, however, feel one-dimensional and finishes shorter than expected. There is just enough fruit to rescue the wine, even if it sometimes feels like it is trying too hard. Blend of 75 CS, 15 PV, 10 Malbec. Tim Mondavi bought this now-cult wine
Full bodied soft wine but a little disappointing given how much I love this vineyard. A little too much plum, vanilla, dark fruit and not enough earth for me

Fantastic bottle after a long decant and next day. Gets more balanced, velvety and complex over time. No where near peak unless you give it 5+ hours. Dark fruit on nose and palate. Dark chocolate, tobacco, graphite and earthiness on the finish. Wow wine!

Impressive and elegantly all Napa. Very dark, opaque ruby, and full bodied. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, dark cherry and vanilla maple syrup. Secondary notes of coffee, a touch of California herbs, and some chocolate. Stood up to a big, chargrilled ribeye. Structured with tannin and acidity to support the cellaring process for many years. Smooth, velvety, deep, rich, and focused. Long juicy finish. Worth the $100+ tariff.

Same as previous notes but had next to 09 Morlet Passionnement. Similar profile until the mountain fruit picked up mid palate. Had that burst of energetic fruit the Morlet lacked. This is still a big wine with a lot of life ahead. For these reasons I rated this one point higher.

Very good! Not as memorable as the tasting we had at the winery last spring, but enjoyable nonetheless. Phenomenal nose and signature Chappellet long finish. On the tongue, there were a few disjointed flavors coming together, so balance wasn't perfect. Maybe if we let it decant longer it would have been a different story. Will wait a couple years to open my other bottle.

Heavy cassis and anise on the nose. Still somewhat primary and tight. Gained needed weight with some air. Black fruits with some oak on a lengthy finish. Was outclassed on this night by a 2012 O'Shaughnessy Howell Mountain.

Curiosity got the best of me so I cracked one of these. Decanted several hours. Dark, dark purple. This wine, in a word, was massive. This was probably the fourth bottle of night and honestly was too much for me. It's not that the wine was bad but I think it's one to drink over the course of several hours and with appropriate fare. Not one where you just grab the bottle from the table and pour a glass. Huge, ripe, sweet fruits, high alcohol but wasn't hot in the least. Obvious new oak but again didn't overwhelm. Resolved tannins, lingering finish. A fine tribute to all that is Napa.

Double splash decanted and let rest for 90 minutes. Deep dark purple color. Drank from a Mondavi Waterford stem. A bit subdued on the nose with hints of clove, blackberry, and menthol. This is very early in this wines development. Palate shows adequate dark fruits, cedar shavings, balsam, and hints of caramel. This is a wine of refinement and grace while still being powerful and assertive. Great fruit purity with well integrated tannins at this young age. Since this was my only bottle, I am a tad dissapointed that I popped this early. Score probably bumps up 1-2 points in the future. This will probably hold another 10 years +.

Deep, concentrated, layered, and restrained. Decanted for about 30 minutes. Oak is present but not overdone. I expected this to smack me in the face with tannins but it was smooth and very drinkable now. Decanted for two hours. There's a metal sheen, abstract in a lot of ways, yet it's all there. So much length and determination, then showing a very modern concentration. Oolong tea, blackberry, plum sauce reduction, mocha, leather and alluvial qualities. More forward and still shows meticulous finesse and zero heat. Firm tannins. Drink 2017 - 2032.

Tried this after trying both the 07 and 08 recently. After reading the reviews i actually found the 09 to be better than expected, especially at this stage. Believe this could end up the best of the bunch down the road, just based on the tremendous concentration and depth it has. A little bit more dust/rock/graphite to go with the full on attack of dark fruit. Phenomenal stuff. Decanted 1.5 hrs.

GEMS of Napa Valley Tasting (Golden Valley Country Club, MN): Very dark red purple color. PNP. Blend of 75% CS/15% PV/10% Malbec. This was pretty tight on pouring, but with some coxing and about 10-15 minutes the nose really exploded. Beautiful ripe cassis, blackberry, lots of vanilla, spice, oak, graphite. The palate certainly needs time to integrate but this is a beauty. Give it another 3+ years. 94(+)pts.

Even a novice can tell we are in CA. I was looking for more but thats most likely due to the pro reviews, This is a wonderful drinking wine but at this moment not very complex and slightly soft on the finish. I was told by others at out table it needs another 8-10 years, hope to be around to try it again at that point. .

Full-bodied with rich black fruit and an opulent texture. The tannins are ripe but firm and this beautiful Napa Cab needs plenty of time to come around. Balanced and silky, this is clearly high-class juice and it avoids the overripe, chocolaty side of Napa cabs that I so despise. I really like the licorice and exotic spice flavors on the finish. 92+

Mini 09' Napa Cabs (Chez Watson): Open for 1 day. Deep purple color. Oak has calmed down significantly since opening yesterday. Chocolate, vanilla, mint and dark berries on the nose. Beautiful and elegant with loads of fresh black and red fruits, floral, crushed rock with some hints of licorice and toasty notes. The fine-grained, yer firm tannins provide the excellent structure and depth. Everything finishes long, chewy and fresh. This wine should thrive in the cellar. Composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, 10% Malbec. (Drink 2013-2027)

Honeymoon Wine Tasting; 6/25/2012-7/3/2012 (California - Napa & Sonoma Counties): Tasted at Winery. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, 10% Malbec. Darker and more concentrated than its Signature cab little sister, this wine sports a very inviting aroma of deep dark fruit. However, slightly gritty tannins currently dominate the taste, but smooth out on the moderate length finish. Give this one 3+ years to come together, unless you enjoy a chewy wine.

Loads of black fruit. Well balanced and something that can be cellared for many years. Is it worth twice as much as their cab? Nope. But a very nice big fruit driven Cali cab.

94(+)pts.

GEMS of the Napa Valley Tasting Event - Minneapolis (Golden Valley Country Club): Dark fruit, graphite and herbs (sage, bay leaf) layered in the complex flavor profile. Soft mouthfeel with ripe tannins for structure. This is built for the long-term cellaring.

Even a novice can tell we are in CA. I was looking for more but thats most likely due to the pro reviews, This is a wonderful drinking wine but at this moment not very complex and slightly soft on the finish. I was told by others at out table it needs another 8-10 years, hope to be around to try it again at that point.

Cherry cola fizz? A bit young and sweet but fully concentrated and spicy. I'm sure at full maturity this will be one fine wine.

Blue fruit, chocolate, mint. Delightful. Needs time for tannins to fine a bit, but great potential and plenty of structure (Hold 5+ yr).

Licorice, smoke, truffles, blackberries and earthy scents were in abundance with little effort. On the palate, the wine is soft, polished, round, lush and fresh, with a long, expansive, chocolate covered dark berry finish.

Mini 09' Napa Cabs (Chez Watson): Open for 1 day. Deep purple color. Oak has calmed down significantly since opening yesterday. Chocolate, vanilla, mint and dark berries on the nose. Rich ripe palate but really nice minerality and balance. Blackberries turning to cherries on the finish. Nice smooth tannins.

Mild fruit nose with a touch of pepper. Very smooth texture with flavors of dark cherry, leather and tobacco. Acids and tannins nicely balanced.
