Popped this in honor of La Festa del Piemonte a few weeks ago. A true wow wine and an example of why I love this hobby - the insatiable, neverending quest to learn more. My first Nebbiolo Rose. Purchased as a library wine via WD, this is still young and only beginning to show secondary characteristics. Beautiful aromatics of dark cherry, licorice, roses, cinnamon, and some forest floor. The palate is intense, concentrated, and layered with moderate, fine tannins. Roses, ripe dark red cherries, tar, leather, and some black tea. So fantastic and probably five years from peak.

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #046: Barolo (By PS): Quite brownish color. In the mature bouquet earth, autumn forest and licorice.. On the palate earth and leather, chocolate, coffee, licorice and laurel. Good acidity and still sticky tannin. Although quite mature, the tannin is not tired yet. Hard to score, but 90 for the complexity seems to be about correct for me.

The 2004 Cogno Vigna Elena Barolo is a typical modern styled Barolo, uber-concentrated and probably aged in 100% new oak, in one word - heavy. A fresh bunch of black berries, cassis, vanilla and clove spices, minty liquorice with mild black truffles. A well-made wine on the book but not my style of wine. (86/100)

The nose showed round berry tones with dusty soil, minerals and herbs. On the palate, it showed tart red fruit, which seemed to saturate the senses while remaining vibrant and balanced throughout. This is a youthful and structured ’04 which should develop beautifully in the cellar.

Dark ruby color. Nose of bright red fruits, black tea, baking spice. Mostly red fruit flavors on the palate with some dried cherry and red licorice coming through. Medium to high acid and tannins. The mouthfeel was a little coarse on this wine and the finish was clipped. I enjoyed the wine but have had many barolos that I enjoyed more than this wine at a much lower cost.

Surprisingly open on the nose for being fairly young. Not an overdose of licorice on the palate, which was a surprise, instead, nice, elegant, somewhat restrained but enjoyable cherries, held back by obvious tannins. Light to medium bodied. Day 4 I decanted the wine and after this the wine showed considerably more power and the licorice became more appearant. Josefz desription of a fist in a velvet gloved then seemed fitting.

Still closed on the nose: on the second day impressions of red berries and chalk, with a hint of cherry liqueur. On the first day, the palate is still tight, but the velvety fruit is noticeable under a layer of chalky minerals and cherry-like acidity. The second day, the palate is more open and the ripe red and black fruit comes much more to the forefront, intermingled with impressions of leather, minerals, liqueur and licorice. Lingering aftertaste. Great balance and elegance, with real power lurking underneath. Like a fist in a velvety glove.

2004 Barolo Tasting: Grandeur of Wine; 4/20/2010-4/21/2010 (Hilton Hotel Singapore): Now this stood out for me as the first with animale, funky barnyard, leather, cow and exotic nuanaces. Impressive length of tremendously refined, aristocratic 1st class fruits. There is a sense of balance like a performer on a tight rope. Not the king of wines but this is the power behind the throne..whispering into the ear of the king.

From magnum... I still would wait a few years, although it can be consumed now with ample slow oxing.

Was a little worried that it might be past it's prime. Still fantastic Barolo goodness. Even better after a couple of hours in the decanter.
