Musique & Vin Festival BYO Dinner with Musicians (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): I once again struggled with this wine. Dense, extremely meaty but too atypical for Gevrey Grand Cru to thrill me. Or really even typical for red Burgundy. It is a very enjoyable glass of wine, but not worth its price to me. If served blind with 3 choices - (1) Burgundy, (2) Northern Rhone, or (3) California Pinot Noir, then (1) Burgundy would be my third guess. A very good (92 point?) wine, but not for what it SHOULD be.

opened 1 hour prior to serving, not decanted. Very smooth on the palate. Fragrant with cedar notes, a little sweet fruit, almost a little vanilla. Pretty good but was kinda expecting a little more.

Acker Merrall 1996 Burgundy Dinner (L2O - Chicago IL): Great floral start. Dense with juicy, ripe fruit and a slightly backward palate that shows off the wine's oak, although not quite as extreme in that manner as the Roty Mazis-Chambertin in the next glass.

Dugat vs. Dugat-Py: Charmes-Chambertin and Lavaux St.-Jacques Head-to-Head (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Nose started with a bit of sulphur, but once that dissipated, there was too much new oak accompanying the big, black fruit. The fruit flavors were black and enjoyable, but frankly didn't show a pure Pinot Noir character. If tasted blind, I could easily have been convinced this was from the Rhone. Had a big fruit-driven finish to start, but that shortened considerably after an hour. Others enjoyed this far more than I did tonight.

Lieu-dits-Cru Dugat vs. Dugat-Py Dinner (Knightsbridge): Full clear red color. Big purpley fruit nose with clean acidity and a clear sulphur note. Big full candied fruit on the palate with the purpley character carring through.

Ripe for drinking, opened and just got better over 3 hours. Beautiful nose of barnyard and red cherries. Drink now and the next 10 years.

1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Second Session (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Wine 3, Also musty, slightly corked. Very youthful nose, black fruit, masculine, bright acidity and still noticeable tannins.

Starta out astringent, needs another half hour before starting to develop the sweet overtones

La Paulée "Warm-up" Dinner (Piperade - San Francisco CA): I always find this to be an odd wine, slightly over-concentrated and off-center. Tonight's was the best I can ever recall, but still unusual.
