Introduction

Our wine dinner reservation at the Slanted door was not honored but we were able to get a last-minute large table at Piperade, one of my all-time favorite restaurants in SF. Could not have been a better night.

Flight 1 - Something to Start (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - (Mostly) 2002 Chevalier-Montrachet (4 Notes)

  • 2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

In a 2002 (mostly) Chevalier flight. Probably an off bottle, this showed lots of ripe fruit but was very soft and restrained. Least interesting of the many times I've had this wine, although I haven't opened one in a couple of years. Approx "90 points" tonight

  • 2002 Marc Colin et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

In a 2002 (mostly) Chevalier flight. Good orchard fruit and subtle spice. Like the Bouchard Cabotte, this came across as too restrained and ever-so-slightly tired.

  • 2002 Marc Colin et Fils Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

In a flight with 3 bottles of 2002 Chevalier-Montrachet. Nicely floral with stone fruit aromas and flavors, this also started restrained but picked up weight and intensity from middle to finish. Very elegant and textured, but not as energetic and exciting as a bottle from 2-3 years ago.

  • 2002 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

In a flight with (mostly) 2002 Chevalier. Consistent with previous bottles, this starts out very ripe, lush, spicy and slutty (in the best possible way), then picks up density and structure from middle to long finish. Easy to enjoy, but also very serious.

Flight 3 - Some Older Reds (2 Notes)

Flight 4 - A Couple of 1990 CdB 1ers (2 Notes)

  • 1990 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

One of the more discussed wines of the night. Massive in every way, I found this a little difficult to enjoy. And while I see its potential, I find it impossible to get any sense if it (at 24 yo), it needs another 10, 20 or 30 years to integrate and provide pleasure. Others liked it far more than I did.

  • 1990 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Compared with the Armand 1990 Epeneaux in the next glass (that might never be ready to drink), this was a glass of old burg pleasure. Elegant, slightly more earthy vs fresh, very good place now. drink up.

Flight 5 - Meo-Camuzet Clos Vouget (3 Notes)

Flight 6 - Two Nice 1996s from Vosne (2 Notes)

  • 1996 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Perhaps not quite as great as when last tried ~4 years ago, but lots of bright red fruit aromas and flavors with intense spice. This has barely evolved so I expect more nuance will emerge in another 5-10 years, but this is so well balanced and integrated that nothing protrudes today.

  • 1996 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Open 3 hours before serving. Intense black fruit with lots of spice on nose and palate. Very powerful fruit with great density. Some tannic elements slightly protrude near the finish, but that is nit picking.
