I was lucky enough to have purchased a half dozen bottles of this wine shortly after release. A decade later, I was pleased to see that this specific vintage (the '01) was included in "1001 Wines You Must Taste Before You Die" (edited by Neil Beckett). That is certainly true, and, unlike many of the far more famous wines in that volume, the Aalto PS is not exactly a household name. It should be.
Even at age 22, this is a wine of great power. It not, however, a "fruit bomb" but a perfectly balanced wine with a wonderful long finish. It is a wine to enjoy with a hearty dinner, and pairs beautifully with red meat, game or even (as I found last night) a perfectly roasted chicken. If anything, this bottle (a Christmas gift in '22) was in even better shape than the last one I had.
If you haven't experienced a great Ribera del Duero, this is a superb place to start -- and at a small fraction of the price of Vega Sicilia's offerings, it is an astonishing bargain.

This wine obviously would have been a great bottle a few years back, with complex nose and palate. But this bottle was past its prime, and has developed some unpleasant flavors which is unfortunate.

not blind Really in good shape. Still fresh, oak and alcohol well integrated, not jammy, good structure and still some dark berry fruits. At his peak, no hurry. Not really elegant but not a typical Parker as you would guess. 94-95

My last bottle from a case purchased soon after release, I had saved this for a very special occasion. Enjoyed at a wonderful restaurant with my son on my birthday, with superb rack of lamb.
Though the critics have this as "old", and it's 5 years past the CT drinking window, and despite the restaurant's report that the cork crumbled when they opened it, after decanting for about 60-90 minutes, it was absolutely singing. The fruit was livelier than I remember the last bottle being two years ago. Great length and complexity. The finest bottle of Ribera del Duero I've ever had, and up there with the best Tempranillo (Murrieta Ygay '05 and an LRA Gran Riserva I had at Lasarte in Barcelona are the most memorable competitors). Spectacular!

Next to last bottle of this brilliant wine, which is finally slowing down a bit, but still beautiful. Last bottle enjoyed several years ago at La Mangeoire and was probably absolute peak. Fruit now more delicate, structure intact, fine long finish. Think of Ava Gardner in On the Beach. A very special wine, with grilled strip steaks on a very special occasion (30/30) . . .

This was my 5th (and last) time with this vintage and I've been all over the place about it. Gave it 84 pts when young but it gradually improved and the bottle before this was really excellent. This one performed less well and I would encourage people not to keep this around much longer. Mostly a single fruit note, with some unpleasant tannins and a rough, peppery quality that I hadn't detected before. I hope other vintages of this are more consistent but I may not be the one to ever find out.

Juicy dark red fruits and spices, with the oak very present. I tasted some subtle brett characteristics that were really nice. I don't know Rioja well at all, but had I tasted blind, would have guessed Left Bank Bordeaux. Really really enjoyed this one and plan to scoop up some additional bottles.

I scored this wine 84 in 2004, 89 in 2012, 93 in 2016 and 94 today. Probably not quite yet at its peak but currently a big, plush, rich, velvety, voluptuous wine. Don't judge these too early.

I liked this much better than the group. This did show more oak then the peers, but I felt the big bold dark rich fruity character with lovely spices absorbed it well. No rush to drink this up, but unlikely to improve.

A very rich and concentrated wine with some countering freshness. Excellent purity to the read cherry fruit, but the new oak also makes itself known. Tasty and nice enough, but there's a bit too much extraction and toast for my tastes.

I had drunk this wine in 2008, 20 &12 and always felt it underperformed its pedigree. Finally, I think it is just now starting to resolve and come together into a still big but tasty and more refined wine. Ample flavors of leather, smoke, and mocha with a touch of graphite. Delicious with food now and still likely to improve. Let's try again in 2-3 yrs.

Deep ruby color. Cold bottle from the cellar so this is reticent on the nose, but notes of black cherry essence, chorizo, and dusty minerality. Medium to full bodied on the palate, silky and complex with floral and incense flavors, with fine, ripe tannins on the finish. 94+ pts.

In nose, it's very Duero and even somehow Rioja. On the palate, it is very well-made with smooth tannin and good structure. But it just lacks the spark..., or may be character. It's a decent wine if you like Bordeaux-style body and structure. Not my cup of tea though.

Bouteille et bouchon en parfaite condition. Into neck.

Occasional dinner group; TOP Bordeaux 1994: Pleasant barnyard, chocolate, coffee, earth, herbs and spices, very ripe fruits like blackberries, some caramel, sweetness and also firm acidity, soft but powerful tannin. Fantastic! A modern wine of great class. Mature but still powerful. Super wine.

This is a nice wine, but not a great wine. I realize I'm in the minority view on this one. It's highly extracted and structured. A carefully made wine. At the moment, it is not quite as powerful as it used to be and it's starting to show a little smoky temperanillo flavor but it comes along with a good amount of heat. I can drink this with no problems and would probably pair it more often with rich food, but a showstopper it isn't.

No decant. Dark ruby. Gorgeous aromatics. Mouthful of dark fruit, some earth, and oak. All well integrated but with a backbone to suggest many years of aging ahead. Finishes with distinct tannins but everything is in balance. Didn't improve over time in glass and perhaps even faded a little after 3 hours. Very alluring wine and am glad to have tried it. Will purchase more of this or perhaps the 2005 and cellar. 50+8+10+18+8=94+

Very disappointing. There's been a tendency for people who don't like this wine to avoid scoring it but it simply isn't all that good and does not, in my opinion deserve a score in the 90s. There's no apparent fruit and the structure that is left just doesn't taste good. It was not particularly appealing on the first night and worse on the second. I'm sorry I have several more of these. It was a big mistake to buy them.
