Opened and poured. Very dark to pink on the rim. Humid boysenberry and marionberry on the nose. Youthful and deeply lush fruited. Full bodied and dense jammy wine. This is nice in that the alcohol doesn't overpower the fruit. Smooth reds and blacks on the finish. Looks like it hit a dumb phase for a spell based on past reviews but now it's singing.

Last time I had this was about 2-3 years ago and this was the last of the bunch. This was tasting much better so the last must have been in a bad phase and it has definitely evolved nicely. Fresher on the nose than last time around with more red fruit and some spices. Alcohol has integrated and not the fruit is more vibrant. Would say it has more years ahead but this is in a great place right now so at 10 yrs for the Juvenile I would drink up.

Interesting how there’s bottle variation. One year ago I tasted this and declared it over-the-hill. Just found another bottle and it was still tasting pretty good. Lots of spice and dark fruit flavors.

Ripe fruit and raisins on the nose. Starting to get that “Port” like quality. Tannins and acidity have resolved as did the alcohol. Rich ripe fruit. Slight raisin, blackberry, spices and fairly short finish. Would drink now and over next few years. Have had other Juveniles that have aged better and think this is just a result of the vintage.

My final bottle from a 6-pack of this one. Has been fun to observe over time. This was probably the best showing as the wine had softened just enough and was more approachable. Served at a nice cellar temperature and enjoyed along side simple things from the grill. Black cherry, mild smoky notes, balanced mouthfeel and alc % in check. Drinking nicely now, think it's likely at peak.

Multiple hour decant. A blend of multiple young vines Zinfandel. Aromas show raspberry and petite strawberry that are reminiscent of buttery jam thumbprint cookies with scents of pomegranate, pepper spice, dark loamy earth and a hint of herbs and toasted anise. On the palate this wine shows a striking round texture with moderate acidity. Flavors echo the nose with jammy raspberry and strawberry notes. Shortbread cookies, spice, anise and earth fall in line as well. Lengthy on the finish with a lingering touch of herbs and berry acidity on the back palate.

Drank the 2012 Old Vines and Juvenile side-by-side. Four people drinking; all of us felt the wines were more similar than distinct. Good balanced flavor; tart dark red fruit; Juvenile may have been slightly smoother; both were enjoyable.

Limited aromatics, fruit appears on the palate, primarily dark or dried cherry and blackberries; no notes of pepper or smoke or spiciness. Smooth, straight-forward wine. Opened on 7/2, consumed about 2/3 of the bottle, kept in fridge until finishing it on 7/5. No real differences in flavor profile or complexity on either tasting.

Tasted at a party and it had a lot of sediment in this bottle and was a little hot on the palate. I noticed black cherry and blackberry on the palate. It was brought to a July 4th party. I would drink them if you have them. Honestly, I was glad there were other much better wines to drink at this event. This was slightly disappointing given the vintage and great winemaking at Turley. It wasn't my bottle so not sure if storage was an issue.

Drank pretty straight forward this go around. Still tight maybe. Not giving up much on the nose, though bottle had been transported and then chilled in the fridge so I wasn't very kind to it. User error :) Grill wine. Can hold longer.

Black cherry and black licorice on the nose. Lean compared to the Silex. Graphite. Pencil lead. White pepper. Fruit roll-up. Weirdly I picked up Michelob smell and taste. Tart. A cross between Wagner and French wines. Brown sugar lotion. Caramel. Vanilla. Herbs like rosemary and thyme. Dr. Brown's Black Cherry Soda. Blueberry, blackberry, and cranberry on the finish; lots of blueberry. Beautiful aroma. Excellent value.

Loving Turley these days . . . This followed another bottle, and held up on its own. The Juveniles are always an outstanding value from Turley, and never disappoint. Great go to wine.

This drank a bit lean. Not a lot of aroma or impact on the palate. Just tight. At this stage with a couple years of rest of it, should be giving more of everything. While a saturated red color, put in the pizza/red sauce pasta wine camp since needs some tomato like acid in the dish to bring the wine alive. We'll see where this one goes from here.

A nose of black cherry and spice, dark garnet in color. A medium to full bodied red, with black cherry, raspberry, licorice and spices on finish, a delicious Zin. This is the entry level Zin for Turley, if you can find their single vineyard wines then buy them. www.winelx.com

Notes of dark fruit and pepper on the palate. Added a little oak complexity on day 2 and three. Overall, a really easy wine to drink that hides its alcohol really well. A great buy at $20 if you can pick it up from the winery, but the QPR drops a little bit with the expensive shipping.

BBQ and Brisket's best friend. This is a big expression of zin. Served alongside a brisket that was lovingly smoked low and slow and that came together oh so nicely. The wine rose to the occasion, layers of red and black fruit to push back on the meat's bark and deep flavors. Still young, but starting to be approachable and will be a nice match to grilled whatever over the next 2-5 years.

Popped and poured...combination of raspberry and floral notes on the nose...just a touch of spice on the finish that I wish was more prominent, but otherwise a smooth finish and a real crowd-pleaser.

Crimson in color. 15.5%% ABV. Super nose of black fruits, briar and anise. Plush and jammy with juicy acidity. Blackberry, raspberry compote, strawberry and vanilla on the palate. Lacks the depth of fruit that the Single Vineyard Designates (SVD's) deliver. The being said the wine is well made and over delivers at the $20 price point. Drink this year while the SVD's continue to develop.

This has blossomed with some time in the cellar. Far more complex than it deserves to be as the bottom rung wine in the Turley portfolio. Purple ruby with thundering legs and an antique shop nose. Still shows off dark pit fruits on the palate with gentle oak notes. Slightly woody finish at first, but opens after an hour to show off black licorice and wet asphalt mixed with floral elements. This is rocking right now. Tonight I would have rated this in the low 90s. Drink through mid-2017.

Juicy, young zinberry fruit with a bit of tar trailing. Some spice and a young, fresh fruit nose. Probably should cost $15 but you're paying for the name as well. Not as good a deal as some of those mid-priced Turley single-vineyards (Zampatti, Earthquake, Pesenti, Duarte, etc.) I think they often deliver more bang for the buck.

Was much better on day two suggesting it needs time in cellar or lots of air before drinking. Also, was much better when served at proper temp (slightly cool) and not at room temp. Great QPR Zin. Score in the 92-93 range.

Simplistic, reminds me of some of the Karly wines and I wouldn't be surprised if this came from some of those vineyards. Young, simple with berry notes not much else.

"Juvenile" is a good word in describing this wine. Still a bit tight, perhaps due to a combination of the new oak barrelling and the 15.5% alcohol. Fairly easy to drink, fruity (plum, cassis, cherry) with a touch of 'pepper' and cinammon, youthful, and of moderate depth. Since there is some but not a lot of depth, the 15.5% alcohol affects the overall taste and experience.

Another nice tasting, this time with M, H and The Kens after a day in Laguna Beach. Drinking beautifully right now. Not terribly complex, but has that great Turley nose (cedar, sandlewood) and finish (blackberry/blueberry and apricots). Definitely a pop 'n pour wine, but in no ways an everyday wine.

Juicy and early drinking with a modicum of complexity. Spicy, brambly nose which is probably the best thing about the wine. Young, juicy zin fruit with a bit of pepper to end it. Drink in the next 1-3 years. Don't let this age, the juveniles don't take well to it.

A bit thin and weak right after opening but got thick and delicious with air. Forgot to decant. With a decant, ready to drink. raspberry, strawberry, tar, smoke, oak. For young zin vines pretty damn good. smooth and yummy. Of course now that's its opened up its all gone. 15.5% alcohol. Paid around $39 for it. first Turley zin I ever had. Would not pay 60 or 80 for a single vineyard turley zin.

Straight-forward smoothy fruity Zinfandel. At $28 a bottle it's easy to see why this wine was #46 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list this year. Don't wait too long to enjoy this...it might get a bit better but it drinks great right now.

On pop and pour it came across as thin on the palate, with a light nose and decent length finish. After an hour in the glass it really blossomed, adding apparent weight on the palate and expressing black fruits wonderfully. Not a big style, smooth rather than briary, balanced wine. Served by the glass and with Turkey Rice soup, did well in both roles.

Beautiful wine that continues to present itself well. Remains conistent with my prior review although every time I drink it it seems to get just a little bit jammier and spicier. I dare you to find a better Zin at $20 a bottle,

Open and aired for an hour. Left overnight. This is an obnoxious little beast. Too big and too bold for it be be enjoyable but too thick and robust to dismiss out of hand. And yet, I like it. Silly me. There needs to be a few years put between this and a palate you actually want to use again. Leather tobacco and gravel combine with anise and green peppers but is an unstructured way. A little steadier the 2nd day but still too young to be enjoyed right now. Let's see it in a while as there are a lot left in the cellar.

New World Blind Tasting Group $40+ (Bin 75): Dark plum core with lighter brightly colored rim showing good clarity; very young, Rhone-ish nose, perfumed, dark berry, lots of fig, sweet; sweet and young palate, some grip, nice savory quality and good mid palate; less cerebral but very tasty.

Decanted 2+ hours. This got better as time passed. Can drink now but give it a really long decant for best results. As others have noted; dark fruits, medium but fine tannins, a touch of alcohol. We did not feel that the oak was over bearing as some have noted. Very happy with this and the QPR is great.

Won't score this as I had a bit to drink before popping this bottle. Initially my thoughts were it needed a bit more time to open up, really tight early on. Once it settled down, it drank quite nicely. Will hold my other bottle.

The wine was not as fruity as I hoped but the bite went away after aerating and there was a lot more of the fresh fruit flavors. The color of the wine was delightful - a nice medium purple. We had with a nice seasoned pork tenderloin and it was great. Price was right!

A bit meh. Was hoping for a bit more fruit and young-vine exuberance. This was somewhat muted and dull, and somewhat overstructured/overextracted for what it is. Slightly better on night 2, when some of the structure had mellowed.

I drink A LOT of Turley wines and have enjoyed a lot of great ones but this bottle was really muted. I'm struggling with the score of 91 pts. from WS and 90 from RP. Strong raspberry nose and flavor but still quite closed and restrained for a Turley Juvenile. Will try again in a month or two. Seems to have good balance and structure. Perhaps I just opened too early. We shall see...

Vivid, very Turley and a lot of Zinfandel. The nose boasts of fruit, strawberry jam, raspberry and lemon curd. The palate follows through in a beautiful way with a velvety and silky impression. Quite striking is a more expressive acidity compared to previous vintages. A very nice Zinfandel for sure, well worth tasting if given the chance. (Works very well with strawberries and milk chocolate by the way!)

Fantastic bottle of zin. My favorite bottle to date actually, and it's a stylistic issue. The extraction is dialed back, the body is dialed back, yet it retains great purity of fruit, spice. Great balance without the overdone jammy flavors, weight, and perception of alcohol I have encountered in the majority of Turley zin based bottles (including recent vintages which have purportedly been dialed back). Juicy, and lively. 15.5% ABV

Juvenile is the most fruit forward of all the Turleys. Drinking well now, but will benefit from another year in the bottle. This is a pop and pour wine, with more of a fruit than pepper nose, and lighter on the palate than most Turleys. That is why it's called Juvenile. At $20 or so a bottle it can be a great introduction into some blockbuster Zins.

My first Turley, purchased after I read that there had been a style shift away from the super high-octane of yore. At 15.4%, that's still pretty darn high. Relatively balanced, lots of dark, dark blackberry fruit and some smooth tannins, but overall not that interesting. I didn't detect much development in an hour in the glass, but I decanted the rest into a half bottle to observe the next day. Not a good value, and the cumbersome bottle is a parody of what "fancy" wine should look like; I couldn't even get my foil cutter to fit on the capsule. Good+.

Wanted something bold with amped up fruit and spice to pair with some grilled ribs with dry rub and this hit the spot! Nothing complicated and crazy here but a really yummy (that's a big technical word) zin that also was great with a chocolate chip cookie at the end of the dinner. Very well balanced and nothing out of whack with this one.

Although I own this wine and it is in my cellar, I have yet to taste it from my personal inventory of one bottle. As such, having the opportunity to order it from a local restaurant's wine list while dining this evening, I ordered a bottle. This Turley bottling (year in and year out) confirms my bias toward it and the "Old Vines" iteration. It is beautiful in its simplicity. Bramble fruit, licorice and Asian spice aromas are followed by a full-bodied, fresh palate of similar flavors. The tannins are medium in weight and very supple. Despite the Turley detractors who only look at the labels, this wine's 15.5% alcohol is virtually seamless. Solid in the middle and medium-to-long on the finish, this is solid Zinfandel from a solid producer. Bravo to Larry Turley for offering his wine list members (and select restaurants) the opportunity to enjoy this "entry level" Zinfandel at such an attractive price. It blows much of its higher-priced competition out of the water. Drink now-2017.

Well, this is really Turleys entry level zinfandel. I dont think I am a fan. I did want to try it though to see what is what. I'm going to call this Turley Lite. Just not overly expressive yet it has big alcohol. Supposedly this wine is made up of very young vines from many of their most prestigious vineyards like Hayne, Ueberroth, Pesenti, etc. maybe its this massive combination of very different areas that is throwing it off for me as individually I really like those vineyards and Turleys wines.

The full flavor of this Zinfandel was drinkable, but could use some time to age. Beautiful spice and tannins were present in the wine from the initial pour to the end of the bottle. Spicy anise was present in the nose along with slight strawberry jam.

Cherry lip balm, hint of spice, and watermelon on the nose. Full bodied on the palate with some green herbaceous notes to go with the red fruit and white pepper. Finishes fairly hot but the tannins and acidity smooth it out a bit.
Poured a glass from my coravin, but the cork didn't reseal properly. Looks like I'll have fun with this 15.5% over the next couple days.

(Tasted at Turley's Spring Pickup Party) Always a tasty choice with one of the best QPRs in California wine. "Refreshing" and "Zin" rarely go together, except with this offering. Spring flowers and some peach notes in the bouquet. Medium bodied with nice legs. Earthy, plummy, blackberry qualities on the palate with a light, refreshing finish. Well done, once again!

This is pleasant, easy-drinking wine. Not very jammy, tannic on the finish. It's definitely a baby Turley -- doesn't have the heft of the winery's more expensive, flagship wines.

My first Turley and different than expected. Aromas and flavors of juicy berries and spice. This did not have the jamminess or the overripe sugary fruit I despise in zin, so that was a plus. However, just no complexity here... simple and easy-drinking. Granted this is baby-killing at this stage, so that may change. However, this is dangerously smooth - hiding its 15.5% ABV incredibly well. Tasty - consume at your peril! Not bad at $20, but I wouldn't buy again.

Sweet cherry and a bready whiff of alcohol on the nose. The palate reveals sweet red and blue berries, and a pleasant briary note with a touch pepper. Not terribly complex, but rock solid. Hefty, but the alcohol stays in check and this baby really hits the spot on a cold winter night.

Surprisingly light in color and body. Good flavor, typically high in alcohol but not noticeable; not a jammy Zin so I liked this wine and usually like Turley wines, nice complexity. Drank in a restaurant at $49. Would drink again.

Agree with most comments, this is too young and needs time. Not very complex and does not have the pepper and spice usually associated with a Turley Zin. This is the youngest bottle we've ever opened, and it will be the last time we open such a young bottle. We usually wait a few years to open and will continue to do so in the future.

This was not showing very well on this day, though I suspect that with some additional bottle age it will improve. Very primary and grapey, showing rather one-dimensional. I liked a '11 OV drank a few days later significantly better, and I have yet to try a Juvey that I've really enjoyed.

Black cherry and black licorice on the nose. Lean compared to the Silex. Graphite. Pencil lead. White pepper. Fruit roll-up. Weirdly I picked up Michelob smell and taste. Tart. A cross between Wagner and French wines. Brown sugar lotion. Caramel. Vanilla. Herbs like rosemary and thyme. Dr. Brown's Black Cherry Soda. Blueberry, blackberry, and cranberry on the finish; lots of blueberry. Beautiful aroma. Excellent value.

Tiring out, with a weakened primary fruit and just a bit of prune. Also high tannin level that seeks to overwhelm whatever fruit is left.

For young zin vines pretty damn good. smooth and yummy. Of course now that's its opened up its all gone. 15.5% alcohol. Paid around $39 for it. first Turley zin I ever had.

Tart raspberry and cherry with some smokey oak. Needs to mellow but is still quite tasty right now. Still testing out what the Turley style is.

Drinking surprisingly well for something this high in alcohol this early. Lots of ripe fruit and spice. Quite good in all for the price. Drink over the next couple of years.

Similar to first bottle I had. Perfectly balanced, spicy zin. Never had a bad wine from Turley.

Simplistic. Well balanced, but just ok. For the price, this is still a relative value, but not as good as previous vintages I've had.

Smooth, not too jammy. Hints of earthiness. Better than other recent vintages of the Juvenile.

This was a little challenging at first, but opened up nicely. Lots of pleasure for this price point. Still, it's not that inexpensive and there are other options in the mid $20s.

What a surprising Juvenile! Big and jammy, of course, but more than a hint of spice.
