Birthday party (Chicago, IL): Not as good as the other 1984s we had earlier in the week. This was a little volatile and thinning out on the palate. I could have guessed merlot instead of cabernet franc here.

Nose: Leather, pencil, cedar and mint with Dark Straberry, Plum and dried bluberry notes. Palate: A bit stern and dry initially with quite a bit of tannin, but the fruit came in as it opened. Cedar, graphite, mint, blackberry and old library book. Well pitched acidity and a classic Napa meets Bordeaux profile. Finish: decent length and nice wood, smoke and spice with more eucalyptus in the finish.
This was from 3L and served at a party for my wife's 40th Birthday. Definitely about as good as this gets. Fresh, coiled and mostly secondary notes on the open, but gained over about 90 minutes.

California Cabernet dinner (Annabelle's Kitchen, Calgary): Dark and still vital. Fruit has some spice and a sweetness to it. The bright acid strikes me as citric acid but it's probably not. The last bottle opened at dinner so I was getting fatigued. A very good bottle, well cellared.

Nose: dark fruits, chocolate Food: Spanish Notes: 1984 is a tricky year across all wine regions, I believe Napa might be one of the rare exceptions where the wines in this vintage is still considered drinkable. This Beringer I feel is probably a little off peak but still quite drinkable now. You can still feel reasonable amount of fruits in it and the chocolate flavor is quite attractive. I liked this wine, the next 5 years will probably be the final drinking window for this wine. Drinking window: Now-2027

Eldest daughter's birth year and opened to enjoy with her on Xmas Eve. It was very smooth. Best with a few minutes of air in the glass to deepen and freshen but started falling apart after about an hour. Noticeable bricking but the aged red fruit was nice. Almost pinot like. Enjoyable but clearly little life left. My bottle says drink me NOW.

My last bottle. Decanted three hours before drinking. Found the nose to be herbaceous and aromatic; the color a uniform deep brick red, completely transparent. In the mouth, a seamless blend of dark cherry and plum, with hints of black raspberry. Long, smooth finish. I suspect that the wine could have lasted for at least another year without further improvement, but it was delicious. If I could find more, and could afford it, I'd buy it.

I love old wine. I love it's melancholy fruit, and oh so special aged character unreplicatable anywhere. That said I found this harsh and acidic I found this unbalanced and thought to let it sit for a few hours, and then again for 24 hours, and finally for 2 days. All the while in a decanter to room temperature air.
Immediately quite sharp and totally unbalanced, frankly undrinkable.
4 hours later, more settled, drinkable and still acidic dominant with restrained fruit dominated by aged cherry liquor.
Next day. It was at its peak, it was good but not great. Blackberry fruit, mild amounts of cigar ash, yes good, yes aged and yes less acidic dominant but not great.
2 days later...... this was shot, absolute vinegar.
I have a number of these old Beringer PR cab's. It made me concerned that they are not holding up.

1992 & Older Napa Cabs - Blind - With a Few Ringers (Siggy & Jenny's Place, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color, 5mm bricked margin. PNP, drank 1 glass blind over 60 minutes. Drank in a blind flight with a '91 and a '84 Montelena. The '84 beringer seemed a bit off its game, the fruit came off almost overripe or a bit stewed. Very reticent in general but good nonetheless; but nowhere near the '84 Montelena and not at the caliber of the '91. This just may have been a bit of an off bottle too, or simply fading.

Year 3 - Super Tasting 1 of 5 - Dave does Birth Year Wines: This has a nicely mature profile that gives off an elevated, but not offensive level of ripeness with aromas of root beer, sassafras, brown spice, spice box, tobacco, cassis, blackberry and black currants. The palate shows the ripe round fruit, some dusty medium tannin remaining and a medium minus finish. Very good, but not a standout tonight.

Year 3: Super Tastings Round 1 of 5; Dave Does Birth Year Wines (Dave's House): Popped and poured, followed approximately 30 minutes. Garnet in the glass, with a slight brick. On the nose, this also has quite a ripe fruit profile, but a bit more restrained than the BV; ripe black fruit, plum, brown sugar, bell pepper, licorice, eucalyptus and earth. On the palate, this shows a reasonable balance, perhaps slightly less acidity than I would have hoped with the ripeness in fruit present. At this point, the tannin is fully resolved. Finishes moderate. No upside here. Drink up.

As others have mentioned here, there is good acidity to this wine, and a surprising freshness even at the three decade mark. This combined with the completely resolved, somewhat porty tannins made it supple and easygoing. Lovely dark berry nose, with some mint/eucalyptus, but mostly veering towards the dark side. Again, I really would not have guessed this to be at the 30 year mark, which is both surprising and a little disappointing.

Beautiful ripe cherry old cabernet nose with maybe a touch of forest floor and dusty smell. Mouth is medium bodied and kind of high pitched- a bit acidic. A bit of tobacco and pencil lead. Still really nice but clearly past its prime. Tasted with a coravin but opening the bottle later tonight.

Perfect fill and cork. Great color for a 28 year old wine. Nose was real nice with mint and dark cherry. Unfortunately that was about it. Fruit pretty much completely faded out in the palate. Pop and poured the first glass and then set the rest in a decanter for about an hour. No real improvement. - not rated

decanted 1 hour before dinner (lamb). color still red but tending to brick. fine Cab nose, no acescence. Flavor blended to elegance, tannin moderate and smooth, acid OK but not prominant. Faded after 3 hours so little point in keeping longer. Cork sound and ullage good.

Thursday night football (Shane's abode): nose: very classy and regal nose with elegant and deep tones of red fruits, herbs, cassis, cherries bits of floral tones as well as some cedary tones. There is also a slight warm and herbal quality to it on the nose
taste: extremely well balanced and elegant medium/full tones of red fruits, cherries, mint, herbs and a bit of cedar all layer together. There are still some good tannins to this that show themselves off but are supporting tannins
overall: This was another of my contributions. The fill was into the neck and the cork had very little staining on it. It was double decanted and ended up getting about 90 minutes of air before tasting. The color was surprisingly dark ruby with a bit of bricking. This wine has a real long way to go

Nicely aged. Great garnet color, very nice aroma of earth and fruit. The taste was a little thin but the finish was very pleasant on the palate. At first, next to the other wines, it seemed less complex and interesting but it grew on me over the course of the night. Overall – 89 Excellent but not outstanding.
