Garnet/tawny color. Mix of ripe red fruit and garrigue on the nose. Full, lush feel but no heat or surmaturité. Delightful mixed red fruit and black licorice with refreshing acidity and enlivening citrus peel. Remarkably fresh for a 17 year old wine from a freakishly hot year. I approached this bottle with very limited expectations, only to have them shattered by the quality of what was here.

Medium ruby color with bricking. Much lighter color and weight than the Beaucastel counterparts (2007 and 1998), and more elegant but not as complex, but all were good (though the 2007 was too young). Quite a bit of fine sediment. Surprisingly sweet red cherry fruit and black licorice; moderate oak but plenty of spice. An amazing value and drinking great now.

Hazy ruby red with some bricking. Lifted aromas of crushed strawberries, forest floor, licorice and garrigue aromas on the nose. Palate is very refined with sweet crushed red berry liqueur, hint of pan drippings & red licorice and spice box with low acidity, no tannins and a long fruity finish.

Medium brick ruby. Lots of sediment, which required standing up for about three days and decanting. Aromas of ripe strawberries, rhubarb, red licorice and cigar box makes a rather inviting nose. A velvet textured wine follows through with sweet crushed red berries, spice box, no evidence of tannins, low acidity and a touch of leather on the long finish. This is a pleasure to drink, but will not get any better.

2003 was hot, very hot. However this was not as influential in the Rhone as it was in more temperate regions like Bordeaux and Burgundy. This wine is a clear example of that. It is light, elegant and with great finesse. Not something very easy to achieve for any wine, let alone a CdP. There's no noticeable heat or over-ripeness on the palate or nose, but there's a bit of sweetness on the mid-palate that is well balanced by a good amount of acid. Now, if the finish was a little longer, I would've scored this higher. Lovely effort.

Pure, elegant, graceful, surprisingly light-bodied for a hot vintage. Fresh berry and slightly floral nose, sweetish on the palate with good grip, resonant finish. Ready to go. Wish I had more.

Think Grenache Lollypop. That is what hits you about this wine until the finish when some dried herbs start to appear and add some character to this wine.

This is so good... it has pretty much everything I'm looking for in a CdP (iron, licorice, some meat, some spices, etc.) and affordable (paid $29 last year). Drank over 3 days with no real sign of decline.

Ruby red color. Ripe red raspberry liquer, lavender, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) and smoky provencal herbs all combine together for a fragrant and complex nose. The palate is on the riper side with candied berry fruit, smoke, garrigue and earthy nuances on the finish. The 2003 Feraud is drinking well now.

Got better and better with time in the glas and the decanter. At first an overwhelming taste of tea leaves left a bitter taste but the fruit surfaced over time to mellow this out. Good structure. I feel the syrah dominates.

This wine is slipping a bit since the last tasting. Still delicious but needs to be consumed in the next few months. Flavor profile basically the same with a bit more dusty cherry on the nose and palate.

This is some wild shit, combining intense aromas of cherry liqueur, mature port, hung wild game, cranberry compote, lavender, briny sea breezes, and wet-dog in a heady brew that is head-turning and borderline bizarre. The "savage" side of CDP, to be sure. There's a cooked, stewy, pruney note in the bouquet that undoubtedly reflects the torrid vintage conditions, and would sure to be very divisive in a room full of tasters. It is big, fleshy, high alcohol, and sweet to taste but not flabby at all, and there's these truly unique flavors of a fruit-wine-spice-reduction sauce. Or maybe Amarone can do stuff like this. Given how unusual it is, some would surely find it undrinkable, but in part for the reasonable $25 I paid, I'm enjoying this (although it's nearly unimaginable to have to drink multiple glasses in a row). Would pair well with lamb or even better with wild game or pheasant.

Opened on the advice of Peter Weygandt who said many of the 03's are cracking up a bit early. Solid coating of fine sediment which stayed intact to the bottle during pour. Lavender, cherry and smokey mushroom nose. Medium full body with a decent amount of tannin remaining. Black currant and chocolate covered cherry flavors lead to a very long finish. Consumed without food. Delicious on its own. Likely has several more years in its plateau.

15% ABV. Somewhat opaque dark black garnet with a hint of tawny. Balsa, garrigue and a port like note on the nose with some secondary garrigue. Full bodied with ripe, sweet red and black fruit and a finish that turns slightly savory and woody. I didn't enjoy this bottle as much as the one last year, but this was very tasty. 91+

Sediment: The bottle had some fine sediment on the side but none in the bottom or in the glass.
Day 1: The wine has a pleasant taste of woody stems which accompany cherry fruit flavors. It has a nice balance of fruit, acidity and nonaggressive tannins. There is some complexity of flavor; the texture is not viscous. It's good by itself but better with food. We had it with sauteed mushrooms and onions on top of Boca Burgers. We opened the bottle and poured a couple of small glasses two hours before dinner - without decanting, the wine gained depth as it warmed up and got a bit of oxygen. The nose is intense and 'bright'; the smell matches the taste.
Day 2: The scent is augmented with notes of raisin. The taste echoes the raisin flavors and has lost some of the compelling dynamic qualities from day 1. The balance is diffeerent; the acidity is less prominent. Still very good.

15% ABV. Deeply colored - slightly unusual black ruby color with what looks like a little bit of browning or oxidation. Aromatic garrigue, balsa wood, suggestion of Port and dry extract. Slight licorice. Full bodied with sweet open knit fruit but with some lingering savory garrigue notes. Finishes with tangy red fruit. Good.

Well, this is the single best 2003 I've had OTHER than the Pegau CdP. Sweet, ripe red fruit (raspberry, strawberry), silky tannins, garrigue, white pepper, and perfect acidity.....and a very long finish. This is heads above other CdPs including (to my tastes) Clos des Papes, Mon Aieul, and, based solely on tasting just after release, the Janasse VV (which seems to be a board favorite amongst the 2003s, but to me was too sweet/syrupy/hot). Arguably borders on "hot", but there's absolutely no hint of roasted fruit flavors, raisins, prunes, "Zinfandel", "Amarone" or any other telltale signs of the vintage, which is great for the vintage....

Baked spice rhubarb pie, bacon in syrup, easter flower bouquet on the nose. Strawberry and rhubarb up front. Steak tartar midway through. Closes with nicely structured tanins. Well integrated. 12/17/2008 follow-on note: found small amount left in fridge (vacuum style saved) two weeks old. Still holding together. i'd say has a couple years left.

Complex wonderful nose of sweet red fruit, earth, and something that I could best describe as leather shoe polish. Rich on the palate, almost so ripe it's almost sweet. On the finish, heat in the throat from the alcohol, even with plenty of air and food to try to extinguish the fire. It's a shame, because under the heat is a classic CdP.
