11/29/2012 8:58:00 AM - Hi BMG, I got your post on my msg board requesting my thoughts on El Dorado wineries of interest. I haven't been keeping up on posting my tasting notes as much lately (new child), but you can scan through my history for wines of that region. I would say two wineries that jump to the forefront of my mind for the area are Clos Saron (run by Gideon Bienstock, former winemaker at nearby Renaissance winery/vineyard) and Edmunds St. John winery. Clos Saron produces world class Pinot, which is utterly unique for the region from my experience. Edmunds sources grapes from different vineyards, often forgotten, in the region. Steve Edmunds produces really pure, essential wines that have always impressed me. Honestly, many of the wineries I've tasted at in the area tend to produce over-hot/alcoholic, syrupy or out of balance Rhone types or Zin or you pick. In general, I've been disappointed with most of what I've found in the area. But that's not to say these hills can't produce great grapes, rather that there is s stylistic gulf between what seems to be the demand vs. my own particular preferences. Quality wine or not, a drive through the hills of El Dorado can be a beautiful journey. You should visit and judge all for yourself. Best, Naysen
