nose - earthy, sweet manure, hookah tobacco mouth - tutti bosco, tobacco, more faded on the mouth than nose but nevertheless impressively alive at age 52

Jim's Retirement Party (Libertyville, IL): From magnum. Sadly, also not as good as a fifth I had a few years ago. It certainly had the hallmarks of that older bottle, but the fruit wasn't as clean and bright; despite the large format, this showed its age a little more. Plummy and correct for the Right Bank, but again the fruit showed a smidgen more oxidized than I would consider ideal.

Concentrated, rich and full, there is a serious depth of flavor here. The nose, with its blend of wet earth, truffle, black cherry and leafy aromas is fabulous. The wine hits your palate in all the right places and stays there, building in intensity. Fully mature, well-stored bottles should be great for at least another decade.

Quite deep, rather evolved and surprisingly almost-opaque brownish-red color. Savory, meaty and subtly oxidative nose with aromas of hoi sin, some syrupy sweetness, a little bit of dried dates, light wizened blackcurrant tones, a hint of sous-bois and a touch of nutty madeirized character. Overall the nose feels quite aged, but definitely not dead yet. The wine is dry, textural and silky on the palate with medium-to-moderately full body and moderately ripe, tertiary flavors of wizened dark fruits, sous-bois, some oxidative notes of beef jerky and hoi sin, a little bit of autumnal leaves, light sweet notes of prunes, dried dates and wizened figs, a hint of leather and a touch of coffee. At first the mouthfeel is quite gentle and fully resolved by the age, but then the acidity creeps in, lending great intensity to the fruit, and finally the rather ample, firm and textural tannins emerge, framing the wine wonderfully with a good, healthy grip. The finish is dry, rather tertiary and still rather grippy with fully mature flavors of dried lingonberries and some tart notes of sea buckthorn, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light metallic notes of brett, savory hints of leather and autumnal leaves and an oxidative touch of beef jerky.
Overall the wine is starting to get a bit tired now, but it is still a remarkably vibrant and enjoyable effort for a classic claret clocking at 50 years of age. The overall feel is slightly more evolved and tertiary than the 1970 Boyd-Cantenac that was tasted alongside, but this wine shows such impressive sense of ripeness and intensity that I can imagine this must've been the more impressive one out of these wines in its youth. In its current state the wine still offers lots of pleasure, but it is slowly losing ground. If this was a representative bottle of this wine, there is no point in keeping this for any longer and most likely it will fade away withing the next decade or so. A great experience, all the same.

COVID Cyber Tasting: Bottle breathe for 2 hours, and double decant before serving. Great nose with cigar, violet and flower, and the palate is fully integrated and matured tannin with some hint of fruit, more dominated with wood, smoke and leather. Hold well in the first 30 min, and peak afterwards. Not particularly complicated but nice drinking of this 50-year old gem.

Blackcurrant, redcurrant, plum and slight cedar and foresty notes on the nose. The medium-bodied palate continues with these, adding medium acidity and fine but still felt tannins. Long finish, tapering towards leather. Maybe slightly past its peak, but still having a good amount of fruit left to make it enjoyable.

An Intimate Cellar Raid (Rancho de Los Olivos): Pristine in appearance, though we struggled with the long cork, leaving a little crumble that was easily extracted from the first glass poured. What a wonderful beauty this was. Fully mature but very much alive, with a lovely velvety texture and notes of leather and truffle alongside the dark cherry flavors. No sign of fading 2+ hours in. A great pull.

Probably the best bottle of this I have ever tasted! No decanting needed here. The sexy, silky textures, sweet, ripe, pure red plum and cherries shine right through all those gorgeous truffles. Sensual in nature, and fully mature, if you see well-stored bottles of this gem, grab them.

Dinner at Pizzeria Bebu (Chicago, IL): Served blind, 1982 or 1989 would have been a good guess given how young this showed. The nose is an explosive mix of spice and plums, with a slight bit of a Christmas cake thing going on. And then the palate just crescendos on top of that -- there's supernatural freshness and life in this bottle. The scale here is immense, and the way it handles the age is magnificent. There's a very mild leafy element that supplements and adds even more complexity to a stunning bottle. The way you get some leathery notes to supplement the fruit is so exciting: it's like you get some secondary and primary together.

Fully mature, this sexy little beast offers truffle, cigar wrapper, hints of the darkest chocolate and cherries galore. The wine is sensuous, lush, soft and round and leaves with ripe, earthy plums that feel so damn good.

Some Impressions; 9/15/2018-9/22/2018 (Concept Riesling Düsseldorf): A nicely aged Pomerol with still dark colour. Black and red berries. Leather, tobacco but with an intact acidity structure. For me at his top. Everything is balanced with ripe tannins giving the wine at strong backbone. Thanks Achim for sharing. 92-93

Beautiful, fully mature Pomerol with all the dark chocolate figs, truffle and plum you could ask for. Richly textured, soft, round tannins and sweet, dark, black cherry and cocoa finish. This charmer is drinking at peak.

Fully mature, this is a perfect example of old school Pomerol. The complex array of scents, starts and finishes with truffles, dark chocolate, truffle and cigar box aromatics. The full bodied wine has length, freshness, charm and plush textures. Closing in on 50 years of age, this is stunning.

Fully mature, and in the case of this bottle having shed a little too much of its fruit to be perfectly balanced. But displaying wonderful depth, on the nose in particular. Required 1.5 hrs to fully open up

Coffee and toast in the beautiful bouquet. On the palate chocolate, red fruits and red fruit acidity, mature and soft tannin which is a bit drying. Still a beautiful and mature complex wine and the others around the table scored the wine a bit higher than I did. My score 89 – 90

If you're looking for a perfectly mature Pomerol that is on its way to 50 years of age, look no further than this beauty. With a beautiful wealth of earthy, truffled plums and a hint of cocoa and tobacco in the nose, the wine is round, plush and finishes with loads of sweet, earthy black cherries. While fully mature, there is more than enough stuffing for at least 10-15 more years of great drinking, if the bottles are well stored.

Vraiment exceptionnel.

Fully mature, this is the perfect moment to enjoy this text book Pomerol. Layers of plush, ripe berries, cocoa, cherry and earth characteristics and a round, silky finish are easily found in this wine. Do not wait to pop a cork, as I do not think there is much to gain.

Truffle, chocolate, earth, forest floor and fresh cherry aromas produced a beautiful perfume. Silk and velvet tannins, supple textures and round, chocolate covered plums with the patina of age make this perfectly mature Pomerol, a delicious treat for the senses. There is no reason to age this wine further. Due to the lack of consistency in the wines made at Latour a Pomerol, prices for this wine are more than fair in today's world. If you can find a well stored example, it's worth picking it up.

1970 Château Latour à Pomerol opens with complex aromatics of flowers, leaves, fresh herbs, plums, espresso, wood and blackberry. With soft, round, sensuous textures and a deep, rich, plum, black cherry and silk finish, this wine delivers a lot of Pomerol pleasure. Fully mature, this wine might not get better. Well stored bottles are worth seeking out. 94 Pts

With MPL and MHM at S&F tasting of '70 Bordeaux. Very pretty, mature, deep ruby color, with orange edge. Soft fruity scents in the nose, but quite shy. On the palate, good fruit but odd metallic element. Bizarre, disjointed aftertaste. 4-10-8-3: 75/100.
