Fantastic. Tasting blind I'd guess St. Emillion Grand Cru. Lots of Cab franc in this blend?? Nose is pleasant but muted; cassis, smoke/soot. Superb texture, so velvety. Rich cassis and berry fruit flavors along with cigar box, leather, spices. Much thanks to Seaquam for sharing.

Very round and smooth on the one side, deep and ample on the other side. Unfortunately this kind of wine has become very expensive. Bought it for around 130 bucks back then, new vintages are at about triple the price. Well, at least there are dozens of great tuscan wines that don’t have the same pedigree, but almost the same quality at half the actual price of a Solaia.

Summer Mondo Event $200+ (Roswell, GA): Deep dark color, extracted, garnet rim; cocoa powder, wet earth, black currant, Cuban cigar, holly, red currant, exuberant ripeness, lots of fruit, green herbal edge is nice counterbalance, good grip to the tannin, black tea, leather, pencil shavings, a touch of black truffle and balsamic notes; in a good spot; '04 Messorio?

The fruit character is concentrated toward the casis and black fruits, and the acidity is lively sharp. Tannins are well infused. This wine is extremely delicate.

Probably the best Solaia I have had. A perfect balance of young and old. Secondary aromas, but nice fruit and tannins. Tasted next to some older wines, which made this seem young, and some younger wines that made this seem old(er). Ultimately, a wonderful, young-ish Italian that married new world and old. Lovely.

Well aged, but still has much to offer. Leather, black olive, and tobacco were most prominent in the nose and palate. Flavors definitely run to secondary notes, but there is still plenty of structure to this wine. Seems like it's fully mature, but wouldn't br shocked if this wine has another good 10 years. Finishes long - and the wine I thought about most the next day.

Light bodied but packs a punch of fresh raspberry flavors (very pronounced on the finish). Underneath are plum, licorice, moderate and rounded tannins. Opened up in the bottle and the flavors became very focused. Extremely good.

Decanted for 3 hours. Ruby colour, dark cherries and hint of tobacco off the nose. On the palate, dark cherries, dark fruit, tobacco, leather and hint of menthol. The 2004 Solaia is not as brooding ss other vintages, stylistically it is elegant and has finesse. Excellent tannic structure and a very long finish. I do think this still can be cellared and will exhibit different characteristics in 2 to 3 years.

Tasted double blind alongside the Ornellaia 2001. Both wines showed still rather young and will need more time to hit their peaks. The Solaia (94 pts) showed quite ripe with even some raisiny notes I don’t particularly like. Still, it slightly edged out the Ornellaia (93 pts) today as it was more open and slightly more complex. The Ornellaia however, showed more elegance and grace, a cooler, purer profile and should certainly reach a higher high once mature (easily in the 96-98 point range like the fantastic 1998).
TN: The nose showed very ripe, at times borderline raisny fruit along with some first tertiary aromas of leather. Quite sexy nose. On the palate this is a dense wine with a good tannic structure with fine, soft tannins without edges and a high acidity. It showed a potpourri of dark fruits, quite ripe, herbs, tomatoes, minerality and some first tertiary aromas of tobacco and leather. I liked the gravitas here but the ripeness was a bit too high. Some bottle in a earlier phase showed better and less ripe. I preferred the wine then. Still, this was drinking on a 94 point level as the above mentioned “flaws” where not intense enough to taint the experience.
Decanting: Decanted for 3-4 hours. As it wasn’t me who decanted it I don’t know if more or less would have been better

Decanted two hours, ruby red with lighter rim. Incredibly perfumed cherries, light tobacco, leather and cured meat. Silky and velvety tannins, sensual sweet fruit. Palmer-l like texture. Long and a very very good wine.

From Mag, no decant - which was probably a mistake! I think the drinking window should be extended, wine felt closed after the generous Ch. de Beaucastel 2001. Strong backbone, tight grip so either needs more time or the bottle was not 100%. Clearly different than the "typical" Supertuscan (at this stage).

I revisited the 2004 vintage after tasting it about two years ago and not being too impressed. Having drunk a good number of bottles over the last 10 years or more I had built a strong appreciation for this wine and vintage and was shocked by its seeming decline.
Which only goes to show that: - exercising care and caution in the storage and serving of such wines is crucial to fully appreciating their qualities (in this case I fear it was my haste to deliver it to the glass🥴); and
- if at first you don’t succeed keep the faith.
Conclusion this time around:
Beautiful, soft, elegant and still rewarding the drinker with the outstanding fruit and Tuscan warmth. Cheers!! Good thing is I still have a few bottles left.

CHL wine dinner with Ed Payot!: Ripe with raisin notes, with some nice tertiaries. I guessed this was a CDP and even with the bottle revealed, this doesn't quite fit the profile of Solaias that i have tried previously. Not sure if its a bottle variation though. Till the next one. 91

Nose of dark fruit, cedar, cassis with good intensity, clean, fresh, lovely. Extremely concentrated on the palate, velvety yet with great structure. Very young, tannic, inky dark, but has so much potential. Ornellaia'04 tasted next to it was readier to drink. Very impressive, nearly impeccable, but needs time.

This is now at a great place to be enjoyed and post a good 30 minutes in a decanter this is on full form. Well evolved, lots of secondary notes, bright fruit still though, good dark fruit edge. Round and silky tannin but with good presence and elegance. At par with what we remember it a good 4-5 months ago. 93-94

Tasted blind. Well made, balanced, and might I say a “pretty” wine. Concentrated still with some structure. I was in Pomerol, but clearly I was off. I’ve had this vintage of Solaia twice and while it is a great bottle of wine, there are other bottles I’d rather drink for the price.

2019 Athens Wine Event (Athens): 2004 Super Tuscan side by side blind ( Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto, Solaia) We guessed this was Ornellaia. Along with Sassicaia the most evolved and actually felt similar albeit Sassicaia was a small notch above ( Papies 94). Well secondary and good evolved dark fruit, soft earthy side. Elegant and in balance, maybe lacking a bit more depth than the other 3 but a superb wine nonetheless. 93

Decanted a few hours. Sweet plummy fruit with smokey notes and perfume. Structures, decadent with a long long finish. Silky with near perfect balance. This is well made. Powerful yet elegant. Ripe lingering tanin on the big robust finish that goes on forever. Superb. Drinking great now but will improve over the next decade or so. Drink now-2030.
At first the nose is dirty and volatile but clears and becomes seductive and velvety, the palate is promisingly wide, chocolate driven and fruity, layers after layers of complex attractive features but at this point in a somewhat restrained package, a wine that can be consumed now but will deliver its best after years of cellaring, to me this is a future classic, 93+.

It’s been a while since I drank this wine/vintage. I have drunk many bottles over the years but unfortunately on this occasion I didn’t give it enough time to breathe after decanting. Some unpleasant slightly sulphurous odours at first which were repeated some time later following the initial tasting. After about an hour those odours began to dissipate. Even then though the wine probably needed at least another hour before consuming. Eventually it did display some strong powerful chocolate notes with deep black fruit behind it. Tar and leather there also. Due to our lack of planning this wine was not able to show its true self. There were however signs that this wine was starting to show its age. I will need to check back in with it again soon.

I think the bottle I tasted may have been slightly flawed as this did not show as I would expect. It felt flat and a little bitter, the finish was short and overall the wine was distinctly unremarkable.

4 Guys, 7 Wines, Blind Tasting & Dinner: Same notes as a few months ago. Despite being almost 15 years old, the wine is still very young, very primary with a lot of freshness, good and silky tannins, and strong, bold aromas of black fruits and a nice, almost CDP like herbal component. Decanted it for 30 mins, slow-ox for 7 hours. I would advise to wait another 5+ years before drinking the next bottle – it should become so much more complex and more elegant with some more time. The group tasted it blind and clearly identified it as Cab but not Bordeaux or Napa.

Great wine which is still on its fruity phase. Nose is impeccably clean and full of pure red and black forest fruit and sweet spices and some earthy notes with no obvious sign of oak. Quite unique in that it does not have an obvious Cabernet typicality nor a Tuscan reference. It tastes like ...Solaia. On the palate it is big and supremely balanced with ample fruit, good structure, smooth texture, long finish. Could age much further.

Strong, bold, intense blue and black fruit, minerality, mint and some other herbal aromas, some brett. Overall still very primary aromas. Medium+ to full body, good amount of tannins, a lot of acidity which makes the wine very young, vibrant and fresh. All pieces in a very good place and in perfect harmony. Good 1+ minute length. That was highly enjoyable and the consensus WOTN.
Popped and poured, good from the get go, evolved in the glass, became more intense and complex (so a 1h+ decant might be advised). While you will enjoy it a lot drinking it right now, it will certainly gain complexity (and an even higher rating) as time goes by and this wine will certainly have a long life.

Exceptionally well made wine. All of the pieces of the wine are singing in harmony. I was concerned it was too young to drink, but no. It has hit an early maturity window. Knock out nose of black fruit, creme di cassis, green leaf tobacco, a touch of saddle leather, white flowers (gardenia) and slight tinge of eucalyptus. The oak is integrated into this beautifully made wine. The tannin was slightly grippy at first, but pairing it with braised short rib ravioli certainly softened the grip. Don't get me wrong... the finish on the wine will power through the youthful tannin even without food. Decanted tonight for 1 hour and then enjoyed over the course of 2 additional hours.

Didn't really give this enough time in decanter to truly shine (ordered off list at restaurant), but this was still tremendously enjoyable. Still feels a little young for my tastes but this is in its early maturity imo. Plenty of dark fruits, anise. Rich and alluring, I really enjoyed this.

We sipped at Otto e Mezzo Macau with friends from Hong Kong and Chef's Mama visiting from Italy to celebrate the recent award of a Michelin One Star for Bombana’s most recent success! Chef opened this bottle for us...grazie!
A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 20% Sangiovese. Oh my ears and whiskers, what an awesome Bordeaux blend with just enough of Tuscany's great Sangiovese to allow the Italians to throw down the gauntlet to their French friends!
Ruby red colour that screams "sip me if you can". Aromas of dark red fruits and liquorice with subtle toasted oak. Perfect perfume of spicy red fruit...enticing Palate of robust red fruit and terrific tannins. Long lingering finish. The salacious seductress you want to meet, but then can never forget...and wish you could date every night!

BYO - Erik: Unfortunately, the nose is very restrained and doesn't show a lot of depth or even impressions. The palate has a lot of refreshing black currant fruit with a touch of chocolate and coffee. One impression that you do get is that of balance which is does very well. Everything about the wine, fruit, acidity, tannins are just in full balance. The only things that is a little bit off is the restrained fruit which I think will come in 2-3 years. The fruit is still very young and the wine clearly needs more time to open up fully. Decanted for 2-3 hours before consumption which it probably shouldn't have been due to the muteness.

Solaia ! (Milano c/o Pandolfini): To me the best of the 7 Intense ruby red..almost opaque. Incredibly rich at nose, very fine: Coffee, cocoa, black pepper, tobacco, a bit of fumè. Ripe cherries and plums. Truffle hints at the end. Full mouth: expanding and mature, but still with a vibrating character and Young. Thick silky tannin; good balance with a rich fruity mouth. large, deep and persistent.

Tasted blind and received my highest score among the lot. Dark garnet turning violet at the rim. Very elegant nose, light on its feet, but gains density as you swirl in the glass revealing rich, velvety chocolate notes. The palate is vibrantly acidic with engaging tannins on a full body and silky texture. Flavors of currants, chocolate, tobacco, and smoke are persistent. Finishes long and heightened with mint and spice notes. Truly exemplary. Drink now until 2029.

Really dark still, just a bit of discolouration. Dark fruit on the nose, liquorice, tar, olives, tobacco. Pretty tight and backward on the palate, firm tannins, chewy, spicy, drying. Big and powerful, very long. 92-93+

Showing a little age. Blackberry, plumb, tar, licorice, damp earth and autumn leaves. After a few hours notes of gardenia flowers and cinnamon. Complex secondary flavors showing through. The aromas just suck you right in t the glass for more. long minty finish with loads of dark fruit. Persistent lingering ripe tannin. Silky smooth and elegant. The only thing is a slight sense of hollowness on the finish, just not as concentrated as i thought it would be, but who's complaining. An incredibly well made wine. In it's window.

2014 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/14/2014-10/21/2014 (New York City, NY): This opaque ruby wine is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc. Despite being 10-years-old at this point, it is still quite primary and backward. That said, there is no doubt that this vintage of Solaia is a blockbuster. It is heavily extracted and packd with dark currants, clove, red plums, baking spices and dry earth. Full-bodied, fresh, seamlessly alcoholic and with medium-weight, firm tannins, it sails through the mid-palate and closes with a long, albeit dusty finish. I think that this one will live much longer than initially thought. Drink 2018-2035.

C:Garnet to rim, no bricking. N:Cassis, wet forest floor, earth, bell pepper and white rice (two classic bolgheri notes for me) P: Intense, full body, medium+ acid and medium+ tannin, perfectly balanced, seamless, long finish.
Outstanding bottle that still has plenty of fruit, a hint of oak, with mellow tannins and a substantial finish. Deep and intense, probably needs a few more years to peak. Very good.

Decanted, and drank last (along with Sassicaia and Lamaione 97s) at X2o with J$ & Blanco. A wonderful wine. Dark ruby color, the nose is an overpowering combination of spices and black fruit. This wine is drinking pretty well right now but the tannins are still very much present, and did somewhat interfere with my enjoyment of this bottle. No harm in waiting a few more years for the next bottle here. Still, a wonderfully complex, elegant ST with great mouthfeel, ripe fruit, loads of spice, and extremely long finish.

Sextet 2nd meeting: Super Tuscan evening (Hanan hosted at Rokah 73 restaurant): Initial Bordeaux-like elegant aroma with some Sangiovese-typical dustiness, earthy & sous-bois. Full bodied, grip tannins, good acidity level, very good harmony, savoury flavours, quite structured, maybe a bit less complexed as expected. Impressive, but not outstanding. It feels too young still to fully enjoy. Don't be tempted to enjoy this wine before 2015!

Decanted 4 hours and battled with 2 other 04 Tuscans. Wow does this have Bordeaux qualities. Floral nose very pretty. Watermelon, cherry nose. Elegant cherry flavors, raisin great finish. A bit medicine type taste, but not in a bad way. Great layers and feels young still. quite gamy flavors, would be great with Pigeon or wild boar. Dusty leather due to super strong tannins, probably from the Sangeovase. Little hamburger grease nose. Black pepper flavor. Nice wine and still a baby.

Very nice wine, unlike the other 2 big Italian wines we drank with it (Masseto and Ornellaia), as it was very Bordeaux in style. The nose would have me guessing Bordeaux rather than Tuscany. But beautiful earth, forest floor, and floral scent. Deep raisin and prune flavors come through on the initial take, followed up by a bit of rich fruit and some green pepper on the finish, which I think was the Sangiovese finally showing up. Sweet and dusty tannins all over the mouth. Very well structured wine, and loved it.

Cabin Dinner— Rigatoni with Bolognese Sauce with pancetta and spicy sausage, wine and leek braised brussels sprouts.
Wine: 2004 SOLAIA
WINE: Good but not GREAT, my feeling for wines of this high class. It would blow the mind if I did not know what I was drinking…if I am going to spend a Benjamin plus a Jackson on a wine it better impressive. Maybe drank early. It was smooth with cinnamon after notes but expected more. Not quite the Rocker that has resorted to Casino Midwest Tours, but maybe a Vegas headliner like David Copperfield--predictable and entertaining (not Celine Dion- having some known’s like some high notes but who cares I knew it was coming and I paid big bucks for that—plus who would claim they actually went to a Dion show) but not as cleaver a wine as Cirque du Soleil where you may be surprised and astonished—did not make that mark.

Saying Goodby to Dave B (Home of Mike and Sandra O.): Second time with this wine recently, and second time it was somewhat overshadowed. Still a fantastic blend. Similar in flavor profile to the Ornellaia, but with a more red fruit (cassis) on the palate. Tobacco leaf on a high toned palate, that really hangs on. Clear sangiovese influence on the blend. Would be the WOTN on most nights. 92-94

San Antonio Wine Geeks (The Monterey): Bright, slightly candied cherry fruit nose with touches of coffee. Focused refined palate, great depth, showing cassis and licorice—much brighter and higher toned with more tension than the Cali cabs. Lengthy finish with some drying tannins in the background . Surprisingly approachable at this young age. Should continue to improve. Great wine, though somewhat lost in the shuffle of great "flashy" wines tonight.

Had the Onellaia '04, Solaia '04 and Sassicaia '04 the other night at a special celebration. WOTN the was Ornellaia - gorgeous nose, beautiful length, velvety tannins and very prominent fruit. JUST AMAZING!. The Solaia was fabulous (rated 94) - very Bordeaux-like with an earthy nose and flavor - so different from the others - the strong Sangiovese character really came through and was fabulous - kept improving over two hours - will probably improve with time. The Sassicaia was the big surprise - so smooth and light and was the perfect starter wine that we enjoyed with light appetizers. The nose took a while to come out but eventually did, and was delightfully fruity but very light (wispy). Rated the Sassicaia 93 - also think this could improve a bit.

We had an unbelievable and fun night laughing and getting crazy at a fantastic Italian restaurant with some of our very best friends. Given this group of friends, I had to bring some great wines. Tuesday dinner with friends (Canan's place): Dark red color. Refined, cool black currant on the nose, very good intensity and notes of vanilla and fruit liqueur – which is the only note that brings me out of Bordeaux. Very pure black currant fruit on the palate, delicious. Good structure, acidity and lots of dryness on the finish. However the fruit and secondary flavours reaches all the way on the finish, making it a great wine.

Tasted blind. Very dark, no signs of age. Nose: pleasant, rich and clean, complex, black- and redcurrant on a slightly nutty background, tobacco, fresh notes. Rather tight on the palate yet. Med+ body, ripe tannins, nice mineral notes, powerfull, but not over the top. Long, tannic, coffee-ish aftertaste. Very young, obviously. I'd hesitate to call it elegant and beautifully balanced, but I guess, it's a matter of style/subjective taste. Would love to try it with some age.

A wine that I always love but this time didn't wow me as much as usual. All of the expected flavours and tightness was there but it lacked the ripe berries and power that I usually find it when drinking Solaia young. I can only either hope that it is in an akward stage or that it was an off bottle. However, it was still very nice and complex and had an almost incredible length... I love this wine and was only lacking the wow-factor for getting the experience I had expected.

Tasted at Badia a Passignano. Dark purple to crimson color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose is still a little tight on this very young wine but showing some lovely notes of wet stones, flowers, perfume, talc and dark plums. Rich and full flavors of plums, currants and berries. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, full bodied. Hold. Likely to pick up another point or two with more time in bottle. Recommended.

Nose was completely closed up. Unlike the nose, the palate was full of fresh fruit, dominated by black cherries and plums, and hints of cocoa powder and earth. Very elegant in the mouth, with a structure worthy of aging but doesnt overpower you with tannins at this early age. Finishes like silk with a nice drying effect. Cant wait to see what this will do in a couple of years.

Well aged, but still has much to offer. Leather, black olive, and tobacco were most prominent in the nose and palate.

Which only goes to show that:
- exercising care and caution in the storage and serving of such wines is crucial to fully appreciating their qualities (in this case I fear it was my haste to deliver it to the glass🥴); and
- if at first you don’t succeed keep the faith.
Conclusion this time around:
Beautiful, soft, elegant and still rewarding the drinker with the outstanding fruit and Tuscan warmth. Cheers!!
Good thing is I still have a few bottles left.

Extremely concentrated on the palate, velvety yet with great structure. Very young, tannic, inky dark, but has so much potential. Ornellaia'04 tasted next to it was readier to drink. Very impressive, nearly impeccable, but needs time.

SA winegeeks tasting. I really liked this one. Restrained nose. Beautiful round tannins with California cab-like fruit flavors with a long finish.

Decanted 2 hours. Very tight and not giving up much on the nose. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Needs a few more years.

We had an unbelievable and fun night laughing and getting crazy at a fantastic Italian restaurant with some of our very best friends. Given this group of friends, I had to bring some great wines. This was the WOTN. I am becoming a huge Solaia fan. Big fruit. Very new world. Almost California Cabernet type fruit. Huge, complex, rich, but with a finish that does not quit. It was really no contest tonight. This is a great wine.

Clean dark fruits with some green tones. Medium bodied with abundant, medium-grain tannins. Black cherry notes. Classic styling. Young, but easy to drink. Very nice.

A bit tight when first opened, however the nose really blossomed after about 2 hours in the decanter. Eventually the moca and spice emerged and the wine came together. Beautiful soft silky but vey present tannins. Great wine - really enjoyable. Could probably still use a few more years.

more concentration here, with forest and smoke. The wine opened up more with a little time. Smooth and silky on the palate.

Solaia Tasting Event - Vinitaly 2010 (Vinitaly 2010, Verona Fiere, Italy): Tasted at Solaia Event at Vinitaly 2010
75% Cab Sauv, 20% Sangiovese, 5% Cab Franc
Eye: deep ruby, plum color. Nose: minerality, smoke, wood. Mouth: slightly green pepper flavor, minerality, sweetness hidden, seems higher alcohol finish, not as strong tannins. C's favorite.

Tuesday night dinner with friends (my place): Nose is filled with black currant, menthol, pencil shavings and has a nice fullness to it.
In the mouth it has dark plums, black currant, some chocolate and a little coffee. Excellent structure with a really nice dryness to it with a gripping acidity. Very primary but still a beautiful and balanced wine. Amazing.

Italy 2008 (Italy): WIML94+
