Yellow in color, intense but not excessively deep. Perfectly kept bottle from Spectrum. Nose exudes apricot, nectarine, honey. Then the palate shows medium acidity and an explosion of stone fruits, green tea, honeycomb, with a long vanilla ending. The wine is layered, complex, extraordinarily drinkable with a medium body. Feels still fresh but the age starts showing in added complexity. A real treat - a great wine.

A very impressive Hermiatge that is big, rich and zesty. It’s quite a mouthful of wine. Not the style of Chave that I want all the time or, prefer. But it is a remarkable blockbuster nonetheless.

March Rhônes (Chicago, IL): It's definitely not my style of wine, but I have to admit this was pretty good as far as Chave blanc goes. A nice nose with a pleasant peach and vanilla note. On the palate, this is definitely low acid, but generally feels balanced, thanks to the concentration, and mercifully this isn't too thick and oily either.

Wines after the Wines! (Bar Purlieu, Eugene, OR): No formal notes. Out of the restaurant fridge 30 minutes before dinner. A glorious wine from start to finish! An open nose of stone fruit, yellow and orange citrus, flowers, apples, honey and minerals. The texture is amazing, while the depth and complexity remind you more of a red wine in sheep's clothing. Now-2033.

Entering its awkward phase but this has excellent structure, shape and finesse to come out the other side beautifully, say in 5+ years from now. Could have done with a decant to blow away the slightly oxidative note.
Golden and a hint of orange in terms of colour, the foggy bouquet slowly revealed its mystery over a 2 hour period. Once there, there were notes of honey, nectarine, orange peel and some mandarin. Body was voluptuous, racy and lovely saline depth. Lovely silky finish that spoke to the soul.
A bit young but certainly drinkable now if you let it breathe.
Drink now to 2033+……

Rhône Tasting-cum-Lunch (Restaurant Rijsel, Amsterdam, NL): Bottle No. 10404 and 10405. Initital hint of oxidation blows off quickly, deep and minerally, open and giving, fresh and complex, silky and seamless with gentle bitters, lovely salinity, rich but effortlessly elegant, orange zest, excellent drive and length. The second bottle is more muted and honeyed, orange and spices, with deeper flavours and not as lifted.

Rhône or Nôwhere 2022 (Malcom, Nebraska): Tasted alongside the 1996 and while this was very good, it was also very primary. However, thanks to the 1996, it was very easy to tell where the 2013 is headed. If you have these, I highly recommend you hold for at least another 10 years so it can begin showing more secondary characteristics.

Lovely pear bouquet. Rich orchard fruit flavor and quite concentrated. Relatively low acidity but still remarkably fresh. Viscous texture. Lingering finish. Will plateau for at least another 4-5 years. Approximately 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne. This is an exceptional white Rhône.
Decanted for an hour. Deep yellow. Bouquet of honey, apples, brioche, toasted nuts, floral notes. Full-bodied with serious weight in the mouth. Persistent and long. Pretty but powerful. So good. Will last for another couple of decades but drinking well now.

Ex-domaine, 6741. Richer, fatter like Chave. Quite sweet, suspect a lot of Roussanne. This is a much more typical Chave blanc, if with more minerals. Would have guessed a mix between Rayas and Beaucastel blanc. 93-94

A white wine that really needs to be decanted for a few hours! Or let it breath overnight...
Lovely gold color, viscous, powerful nose showing gooseberry and hazelnuts, marzipan, brioche. Intense flavors, butter that fades with air. Amazing! This’d will mature quickly but right now, 94+

Wow! What a gorgeous wine. Big rich, oily, lovely touch of oak. Peach melon apricot. Long and complex. Broad and generous rather than sharp but not without acidity. Great wine that blind I would have said was Viognier – perhaps just not quite as perfumed and exotic as a Viognier but a very special wine. 80% Marsanne, 20% Roussanne

Wow, what a powerful wine. The bouquet comes with flowers, peaches, honey and some tangerine and supportive minerality. This is by no ways closing down or in an awkward stage, a touch more acidity would probably rocket it even into higher echelon. I have no real experience with aged white Chaves, but after some dismal experiences with Chapoutiers white hermitage single crus older than 20 years, I prefer to drink those great wines on the younger side.

Opulent, rich nose screams baked apple, baked pear, ginger, and cinnamon. Dense with significant dry extract carrying flavors of baked apple, pineapple, and spice. Just a massive wine in nearly every dimension; I find myself thinking if these had less alcohol and more acidity I'd be in love. Very good but best starting 2025.

12 Days of Christmas; 12/21/2017-1/1/2018 (NYC, Vermont, Boston): From the wine list at Select Oyster Bar (Boston) at a very reasonable markup. A great way to cap off 2017 paired with a lunch of avocado toast and lobster salad. Served from wine fridge, temp was initially a bit too cold and wine only started to fully reveal itself as it warmed to room temp. This is full and rich in mouthfeel, with a nose and palate of golden apples, Stone fruit, some nuttiness, spice and white pepper and a very long finish. Just really delicious!

15 vintages of Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage, Rouge and Blanc (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): Pretty, heavy lemon note on the nose. This is rich and tart. Pretty tight and lean, though, with just the slightest metallic notion on the nose. Really lovely sweet fruit on palate entry. Banana flavored Runts. Really pretty and nice.
