Ye Olde Rieslings: Extroverted and racy, showing remarkably youthful energy, exotic fruit (guava, mango), salty minerals, and a hint of cumin and incense. Terrific concentration married to a laser beam of acidity, with just enough sweetness to soften the corners. A more complete wine than the '01 spatlese trocken we had last year, and the best non-dry wine tonight for me.
It’s remarkable when a bottle of 20+ year old Riesling immediately evokes the word “electric” but that’s what this wine did. Mature, honeyed fruit, and a live wire running down the center. I have been through over a case of this wine, and while they have never been short of acidity, they didn’t crackle like a downed line in a rainstorm. There’s no shortage of ripe, peachy fruit, sprinkled with mango powder, but the central character is the lightning bolt of acidity. What a fascinating turn for a wine from the final act of HGS.

Brad's Belated Big 6-0 Birthday Celebration (Brad & Marcia's Place, St. Paul, MN): Deep gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. This seems fairly far along at this point; aged cheese, aged gouda, honey, ripe candied apricot, mango, rich with a baked fruit profile, full bodied and unctuous with a sweet palate that comes across more like an Auslese. This looks like a near term drinker.

Dark viscous gold. Opulent bouquet of quince and honeyed apples. The palate was as full on as prior bottles but the acidity that has kept this wine balanced over the years has noticeably faded now. The residual sugar is just that much more of a feature, and unfortunately the balance is noticeably less good tonight than on prior bottles.
This was my last bottle of 7 - fantastic wine overall but I should have drunk all of these within 15 years from vintage.

Haven’t tried this for a while and tonight’s Riesling tasting seemed an appropriate time to check in. Frankly was a little nervous because my last experience suggested a little prematurity. Cork soft and wet partway up but intact. Color dark straw or light gold depending on your mood. Nose shows apricot and green spice. Swishing this shows its unctuous density but there is a solid core of acid propelling this forward. Finish is lengthy and flavorful. Will wait to try next bottle. This is dynamite and in no danger of decline.

On pace to be drinking one bottle per year, which seems about right given the maturity plateau of this bottling. It's a mature adult in every sense of the word. It has gravitas, it has presence, and there's a depth of character that speaks to age and a bit of wisdom. Still showing a bit of its youthful fruit, though the sweetness has mellowed, and a little more acidic character comes out on the finish - a wry smile, tinged with a hint of irritation. Leave me alone. I have some thinking to do. I've got a good book, and Coltrane is playing. Get lost, unless you are prepared to join me. I'm prepared to sit here as long as you are.

A very elegant wine with finesse and depth that sail across the palate. There's a sweetness, but it has taken on an almost umami character, it's not just sweet. The citrus and honey is backed by what resembles the almost smoky flavors of grilled fruit and wisps of acidity that keep the whole package feeling fresh. It's hard to put down. Light and airy, but serious and intense, too. In a great spot.

Damn! Perfect cork. Very light in color for a 19 year old Spatlese. Grapefruit, lemon, apricot, pennyroyal and honeysuckle. Rich and fresh at once. Almost dry, though you can tell that it was once quite sweet. This lingers beautifully on airy spice and golden fruits. Acid is on point and the sweetness is completely integrated. Good stuff.

This time when I went to the wine cellar, I wore my glasses, and so selected the intended wine. The 2001 Burgergarten Riesling Spatlese comes from the swan song vintage for the legendary HGS at Catoir. Time tends to create a different view of these wines, imbuing them with an unnatural, nearly magical level of power. Perhaps that’s due to the Rieslaner and Scheurebe, which often have more richness and, especially for the Rieslaner, weight.
That is not to say that this is a light wine. It has depth and exceptional length. But that is not what is so amazing about it. The defining characteristic of this wine is elegance. It carries its thousand flavors on the wings of angels. It’s important words delivered in a calm, melodious voice.
#2134. Yum. Smoky grilled sour pineapple and grapefruit with lots of acidity nicely balancing the mostly digested sweetness. Absolutely delicious. Don't see any reason to hold these longer.

It's all too easy to approach the final wines of Hans-Günter Schwarz career at Catoir with a sort of reverence. A bit of effort is required to clear the mind, and focus on what the wine has to give. This wine has a lot to give!
Purchased on release, and stored at a some what glacially cold temperature, the wine had barely moved into a light golden color. After thirty minutes of air the aromatics opened up, with a full plate of tropical fruits, and an light spice undertone. Only moderately sweet on the palate after eighteen years in the bottle (feinherb level perhaps), the palate maintained bright acidity, with a bit of finishing creaminess. I probably would have guess a 7-10 year old wine if I had been served this blind, and it looks like there are many more years ahead for well stored bottles. Riesling magic.

Deep golden color. This wine has come a long way in the past few years. Peach skin, honey and a mineral base are the major elements to be found in this rich and satisfying wine. Really quite good. (93)

Dark color. Baked apple and faintly tropical aromas with sweet spice. Similar flavors are slightly sweeter and less complex than I'd expect at this age in a good vintage, but certainly well balanced and enjoyable, particularly with seafood in a rich sauce.
Medium gold. Honeyed apple with some spice notes on bouquet. Palate is perhaps a touch less expressive and harmonious than my last bottle of this but still a rich, balanced panopoly of flavours. Ripe orchard fruit, residual sugar and acidity in perfect balance, and some wood/tertiary complexity adding heft and dimension.
I only have one bottle of my 7 original left to me. I'll try to get to it within the next 2-3 years tops. This has been a superb wine and a great purchase. Thai curries and this are a marvelous pairing.

2001 MULLER-CATOIR HAARDTER BURGERGARTEN SPATLESE PFALZ RIESLING- the nose was redolent of steel and flint, the taste was of delicious honeyed stone fruit with a streak of minerals down the middle; it just kept on expanding and pleasing.

Quite tasty, but in a very sweet and luscious fashion - very much outclassed today by the 2002 Prum, which made this seem a bit treacly and far, far more advanced in comparison; hard to believe they were only a year apart. I've had some bottles like this one and others that were more cutting. Anyway, it is delicious just the same. It's golden-hued in the glass and the fruit has taken on deep tones on the palate as well - not to the point where its lost its sense of freshness, just darker in complexion, with tropical fruits bringing to mind apricot confiture and the like.
Great showing, mature, no need to keep this. Nose a bit muted at first but gained some weight with air showing tropical fruit, sweet meringue, touch of wax and minty element. Residual sugar not overbearing, thanks to nice acidity, medium plus finish and excellent pairing with sushis and foie gras.

Fortunately another one of the great bottles. Racy and cutting despite the fact that the fruit is actually showing some (admirable) advancement, with a hint of kerosene and a deeper, coppery cast like some of the usual delicious riesling tropical fruit were seared over a campfire. It tastes on the dry side with a chill but sweeter as it warms up; in either case I think this presents a more steely veneer than more recent vintages. Looking forward to continuing to follow this one.

Quick note, this was #2134....Wine is in a great spot right now. Great citrus aromatics of grapefruit and orange blossoms. While there is a moderate weight to the wine, the profile leans more acidic with orange and blood orange, tart apple and beeswax. It got better with some time in the glass. Still a lot of life ahead, but now seems to be a great time to open.

Intense and deep golden-yellow. Complex and rich aromas of Honey, Lemon Zest and Peach Jam. Perfume. Hints Mold Cheese and Petrol. Buttermilk with some sourness. Flavors of Honey paired with Honeydew Melon. Grapefruit and other Tropical Fruits. Traces of Nuts and old Parmesan cheese. Sits beautifully in the month; round and soft. Finishes medium-long with Herbs, Violas, Peppery Spiciness and little acidity. This is another good example for the aging abilities of the Riesling grape. A wine with great aroma and flavor complexity. Well proportioned and balanced. Good to drink now or to keep for another five years at least. More details at: cellartv.wordpress.com

restaurant purchase, note from memory. popped and poured. color gold bordering on amber. on the nose this showed maturing riesling with mostly white fruits. on the palate there was quite a bit more apple flavor than i expected from nose, but the acidity kept the RS at bay. really wonderful wine. agree with others that there is plenty left in the tank on this one.

This was the #2134 (Ap #9) bottling. Pale gold color. The aromatics took a while to unfold, with ripe grapefruit and peach hovering over a slightly smoky, salty base. It was still quite rich and sweet, though the acids balanced it well, and the richness was a good counterpoint to a rather spicy Thai curry. This has years ahead of it.

Popped and poured at 10C. Moderately deep yellow, long legs. Notes from memory but once again this was superb. Overpowering bouquet of rich orchard fruits, a hint of kerosene and some oak. Deep, complex mid-palate with all of the bouquet and a rivetting interplay of residual sugar and acidity that reverberated for a minute long final. Just delightful. Served this to a non Riesling person and he loved it.

Medium-deep green-gold color. Aromas of honey, peach, lemon, and lemon zest. Dense palate of ripe peach, lemon, honey, lemon zest, tangerine, and cherry. A slight bitter element emerges with some acid on a medium-long finish. Incredibly hard not to drink straight from the bottle gulp at a time. With no signs of kerosene or other aged elements, save the ripe peach, this should develop. I suspect I may drink the remaining bottles before I can find out. Drink or hold.

Dinner at Lotus of Siam (Lotus of Siam, Las Vegas): This was my WOTN. Tantalizing nose of fresh apples, pears, bees wax, and butterscotch. Secondary flavors of flint, petrol, and tropical fruit blossom on the palate. I thought the depth and complexity on the palate separated this from the rest of the wine we enjoyed this night. The finish was long and deep - showing no signs of age. Acutely precise, this Spat was really on its game.

Smell: Scents of petrol, pear, peach, and green apples.
Taste: Flavors of peach, nectarine, clementine, and quince played out along a medium-long finish.
Overall: A wonderful example of German Riesling that I would gladly buy again. This had lively acidity and brilliant fruit purity that lead me to believe this could still drink well for another 4-8 years with proper storage.

Disappointing, this was sourced from from less than ideal provenance and it shows - the aromatics are gorgeous with bright white fruited flavours, spices, minerals and touches of honey, but on the palate it's a little awkward and blurry with the flavours lacking much depth or precision and falling away at the back end rather quickly.

Lots of Burgundy and a few Rieslings at Apiary (Apiary, NYC): AP #29, this is the 2133 bottling. Light gold colour, showing surprising development compared to the bottle I had a few months ago. Explosive, intense aromatics of spices, flowers, honey and tropical fruits with softer scents of smoke and petrol underneath. Sweet and rich in the mouth with lots more spices and tropical fruit, faint honeyed and caramel notes underneath and moderate acidity that's barely felt as this warms up a little.

Popped and poured at 12 C. Pale yellow. Rich floral bouquet with honeyed white flower and some tropical fruit scents and some petrol. On the palate this was rich, round and bursting with all of the flavours promised by the bouquet and any sweetness was held perfectly in balance with the acidity. The aftertaste reverberates across the palate for close to a minute. Lovely wine but needs to be kept coolish as it does fall apart a bit as it warms. I think this could be an excellent wine with Asian curry dishes. 50+5+13+17+8=93.

Tastes as if this was bottled and released just last week. Incredibly youthful and primary with layers of spices, peach, apple, rocks and red fruits across the nose and palate. Again golden color. Somewhat muted, creamy Riesling nose. Makes me think of a peach skin cream sickle. Lacks the precision of my favorites. A smooth operator that is satisfying. (89)

Not as good as my last bottle, but still pretty tasty. Everything on this one feels just a little bit softer. Also a 2134.

Popped and poured. Color dark gold. Nose shows some carmelized sugar framing mature Riesling fruit. On palate this shows a little RS with perfectly balancing acidity. Really really good tonight.

restaurant purchase, note from memory. popped and poured. color gold bordering on amber. on the nose this showed maturing riesling with mostly white fruits. on the palate there was quite a bit more apple flavor than i expected from nose, but the acidity kept the RS at bay. really wonderful wine. agree with others that there is plenty left in the tank on this one.

Damn. This was astoundingly good. Very Alsatian in character; sharp, pleasant acidity, stone fruit, honeysuckle, road tar... One of the greatest Rieslings from Pfalz, or anywhere in Germany for that matter.

Dinner with Chris & Ann ('82 Lynch-Bages, '83 Raymond-Lafon) (Ann's House): Color: light canary yellow

Starting to show a bit of secondary development. Crisp green apple and hints of petrol. A moderate sense of sweetness, but still light on its feet.

Incredibly vibrant in the mouth with bright acidity and a little spritz, finishing long and clean. Delicious. (The 2134 bottling for those keeping track.)

Just slighty mature yellow. Sweet yellow fruits: mature pears, apples and melons; minerals and smoke. Thai spices. Integrated, almost seamless, very pleasing. Just perfect with my homecooked 4-course Thai dinner for the family-in-law. Everybody loved it.

Colored like a light sherry. A gorgeous sweet nose of ripe fruit, and smoky minerals (any such thing?) Full-bodied, well-balanced with a pleasing taste: lychee, ripe pear, werthers echte, some spicy curry hiding beneath it all and more of the smoky minerals. Yummy!
