Neck fill. Still going strong. Currant, Oak, Tobacco, Forest floor (earthy) on the nose. Very well structured with supple tannins and still holding medium acidity.

Fantastic nose with menthol, sweet perfume, library book, and pencil. This was very dry with plenty of acid and tannin. It was lightly flavored with soil, iron, cedar, leather, and a bit of each of some tart and dark fruits. Nice texture, with a touch of firmness to the tannins still. The nose was the most exciting part, and this was good, old bordeaux, but the flavors have lost intensity.

This wine is holding on! After an hour's decant, the aromas and spice continue to evolve in the glass. It's dry; redcurrants and cranberries mix with an earthiness of an old wine but one which can be quaffed like a good ribena!

Old Bordeaux Dinner (Hong Kong Country Club, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): High shoulder fill. Totally transparent but still a lovely bright light ruby colout. Nose is captivating - sweet, light, fragrant rose and raspberry. Palate is wow......wonderful structure, graceful tannins, rich but light in body yet somehow with real power. The finish is mouth coating and with a super resonance and revererance that is impressively long. Almost as good on the night as the 1973 Cheval Blanc. Brilliant.

Neck fill, mostly saturated cork, slow ox 10 hours. Medium-light and a touch cloudy in the glass, pale ruby to garnet at the rim. Fairly muted nose, faint red and dark fruits and a very light vegetal note that was not at all unpleasant. Marvelous finesse on the palate, with cherry and dark fruits, tobacco, dry leather, no barnyard or funk at all. Bright and clean, with lively tart acidity and silky tannins. Limited complexity but great mouthfeel and balance, with pleasant warmth. Fruit lingers through the medium finish. Held up well for several hours. Nice bottle.

Musty corked smell subsided 30 minutes after opening; thin brown; candy, chewy caramel; crushed cherries. A worth while gamble for an interesting Margaux, buy it, drink it.

Excellent vieux vin. Excellent.

Aging robe. Surprisingly alive nose - still very good by any standard (undisturbed in one cellar since 1973) Fruit tends toward the red end of the spectrum, complex mineral and floral notes, plenty of earth and leather. Leaner on the palate. A good finish here. Gentlemanly classic.

Drank this on my 2nd Wedding Anniversary. Medium bodied complex wine, lots of red fruit and earth, with hints of mushrooms, pepper, slight citrus, and chocolate. Silky and smooth. The aroma was very unique and powerful (you'll either love it or hate it), as it pervaded the air immediately after opening. Removing the cork was a pain, fill level was top-shoulder.

High shoulder. Ruby colour with orange tinge at edge. Cork extraction not fun...Wine was mooth and surprisingly elegant. Started to fade after an hour but very enjoyable.

Fill was mid shoulder. The cork fell apart. I'm sure there are better examples but this was way past it's prime. I have another bottle that is very top shoulder fill, so we'll see if that's better.

Mid shoulder fill, cork extracted in two pieces. Dark ruby color, pale orange rim. Nose of smoke, tobacco, and cedar. Palate of tart cherry. There's still fruit here,in the background but lovely, refined and elegant. The acidity takes over after about 40 minutes so don't let this linger. A wonderful example of an aged Bordeaux, albeit the blush of fruit gone but for a 40 year old wine this had held up beautifully. A steal at $36 paid at auction.

Mid shoulder fill. Decanted 5 minutes before tasting. Clear medium ruby, brickish at the rim. Restrained bouquet of forest floor and meat. The wine tasted better than it smelled, offering hints of faded tart red berries. Silky, seamless mouthfeel with balance and elegance. When we returned home from The Nutcracker three hours later, the color had turned brownish and the flavors had changed to old leather and roasted nuts.

Chronicle: faded orange brown; nose of leaves, light leather, old prunes, somewhat dark floral notes with hints of old berries, jam w/alcohol; earthy, light mth with still good a’s, but no real t’s; tired, old, smooth (flabby), but interesting!

we have enjoyed many "off-system" bottles over the years, the last one being perhaps 3 years ago. although my love affair with brane cantenac continues, this bottle represents the end of an era for me as i have no more 1970's left. fortunately, this bottle appears to have been in better condition than those described by others. high shoulder fill. fully saturated but firm cork extracted in tact. the nose immediately leaps from the bottle. floral bouquet remains prominent in the glass throughout the tasting. although the color seemed a little thin on pouring, it was like a brilliant cut garnet in the glass. no browning, no thinning at the rim. the wine has shed most of its voluptuous body that i recall from its youth. nevertheless, subtle reminders of margaux terroir remain. the wine remains in steady state. after 20 minutes, it starts to release some volatility but this disappears after 5 minutes. fine sedimentation in the last glass contributes some to the flavor components. the best part of drinking older bordeax is being able to enjoy the fruit without being knocked out by alcohol. although i would not keep this wine longer, i envy the member who is waiting to enjoy the 6L bottle.
