  • Color is deep garnet with hints of brown. Nose is still delicious, a mix of boysenberry/red fruit, cedar, prunes, forest fire smoke, game. Palate is medium bodied but still massively tannic, this has legs to last and is still almost too drying. On palate, red fruits, cedar, game. Perhaps a bit lacking on the palate in power but still very nice. Good pairing with lamb, but insanely good pairing with mushroom soup. A wine that needs food. From the cellar at Restaurant Michel Guerard.

  • Sadly, this bottle was past it - bland, lacking in fruit. Hopefully just a bad one.

  • Great aged Heritage of Montus. Mushrooms, oak, and forest floor. Tannins are still slightly present but we'll integrated. Showing well now so drink them up, as no further development is expected.

  • Decanted and served and this frankly was proper little discovery.
Earthy , well evolved, smooth and well round on the palate with nice firm yet silky tannin. Fascinating in a way and we would have struggled to place this had we had this blind, probably we would have said Bordeaux with a bit of age.Very good and understated beauty. 93 and drink sooner than later.

  • Reifes Bordeauxrot, aufgehellter, ins Orange tendierender Rand. Gefällt in seiner Art ganz gut. Jetzt bis 2022, 17 vvPunkte (86/100) www.vvwine.ch

  • Oenocosmos tasting (Athens Hill): This is pure Tannat.
The wine shows developed profile but nowhere near its peak, irony, bloody, leathery, fresh red cherries, currants, decadent character, sour cherry, pot pouri
In the palate, the wine shows more evolution, red cherries and currants again, leather, iron, brett-iodine, tight tannins that are still kicking, earth, sweet notes, honey, syrup, a bit of marmalade and tobacco, medium to full body, medium finish

  • A few weeks ago I opened a bottle of basic Montus 2011 which was very good in a rather crowd-pleasing and anonymously international style. This 1999 Prestige is much closer to the style with a real sense of place which I knew when I first started drinking Madiran. It is quite lean and linear in shape on the palate but with strong sinewy muscles and tannic backbone. Its fruit is savoury and quite acidic but with an attractive fragrant overlay and there are earthy minerals and dabs of wet leather. The overall effect is invigorating and classy in a somewhat austere way. Very good.

88 pts

  • Cork was in good shape. Decanted for one hour. A lot of funky notes (leather, cooked vegetables) on the nose. Medium to full bodied, rather robust with good tannic grip, showing funky flavors likewise the nose, a bit of austere oak and some fruity sweetness. Firm acidic structure and gentle dusty kick on the finish. Very enjoyable. In a great spot now and could probably hold for another 10 years.

  • Pnp. Dark hue. Seducing nose of ripe blackberries, underwood. Mouth straight, mineral, quite dry, with strong tobacco , pencil ink, ash, old sap. A masculin, dry mature red. Defenetly complex and still alive. Needs a duck "confit" (fried and stored in its fat) .

  • Cork perfect, heavy sediment. Colour very youthful for a -99. Heavy robes. Nose w tobacco, oak, dark fruits (blackberry), toast, sous-bois. Rounded, but still prominent tannins, lively acidity, medium+ body w sour cherries. Long aftertaste, but too one-dimensional for higher marks. Had expected a bit more. Will last longer, but why wait??

  • From magnum it was very fresh and herbal, still had this characteristic dryness in it.Wood and peppermint as well as some gamey notes here.

  • Needs decanting to get some red fruit.

  • Still a tough bloke with lots of Tannins, restraint fruit and a very high acid (what I like). Really substantial with an awesome Sediment in the empty bottle. The flavour is rather brut and old school and a mixture of fruit, herbs and loads of tertiary aromas. The structure and length are excellent but it lacks a bit charm. So flavour and acid are not for beginners or Lovers of modern, fruit driven, easy drinking wine styles.

No real hurry to drink. This wine will last for another ten years but maybe the remaining fat and fruit will vanish and the wine will turn to harshness.

  • Very Bordeaux-like, with a bit of tail-end astringency still. Went wonderfully with roast leg of lamb on Easter Sunday.

  • A business dinner (Hilversum): Magnum. Flavoursome, has power and weight but on the rustic side, very tannic and showing some oxidative notes on the nose. Went very well with rack of lamb.

  • Cellartracker in the flesh #2 with Stefan, Akiko, Atsushi & Yukari. (Le Message, Yokohama, Japan): Cream, blackcurrant, vanilla, spice, black plum cedar, biscuit, and toast and mint. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acidity, blackcurrant with medium plus talc like tannin and spice. Very long finish. Very good. I guessed good vintage Pauillac (I went with 09) so got this completely wrong. The only upside was that when the Chef tried it the first thing he said was "Bordeaux!"

  • Swe-Aus blind tasting, Yokohama (Le Message, Gumyouji (Yokohama)): (My wine)
All, including the chef, were sure it was a better Bdx.

    Dark red towards black.
Nose with Bdx earth, a bit of Brett and apples. Astonishing!
Taste is Bdx-typical like the better reds of yore. Tannic M+++ with mature tannins. Superbly intense with cassis and small notes of sumi ink. Long finish with a fine wood treatment and toast. Well integrated, still maturing wine that with some more layers would go further up the points' scale.
    Wife: 93p
    No more btls, but looking!
This wine has many more years to go and grow. Wow!

  • Day 2, half bottle was vacuumized in the fridge.
The nose is more intensive now with clearer and more dominant black berry notes, wood herbs, mineral notes and some vanilla. Still leather and tabacco. 88+ p.
The palate is still pretty much the same, low fruit, high tannins & acidity. Remarkable and lasting dry mouthfeel. 87+ p.
Not perfectly my style and no beginner's wine but pretty good stuff.

  • Day 1 drinking.
Eye: Clear and bright, brownish ruby red.
    Pop and pour:
Nose: Leather, wood, oak, earthy notes, tabacco, cassis, little fruit, medium intense. Quite nice.
Palate: Tannic, woody, dry mouthfeel, adstringent, little fruit, firm acidity on the mid palate, cassis, menthol, medium long finish. Tasty, but really really dry.
    After 30 minutes:
Smoother, nose now has some vanilla and more black currant and bramble notes. 88 p. Palate has a little more fruit now and lasts longer but stays very dry in the mouth. 87 p.
Do not decant too long. Surely is not already over the top as it has no real signs of aging.
For 18€/24$ I would expect a little more intensity, depth and complexity. Good or very good nevertheless, just too expensive. 87-88 p. Serve with beef.

  • Disappointing. Nice enough taste but heavy and murky for the price.

  • Late Mar 2013: intense black red color; Restrained nose; red fruits in the mouth; medium body; fleshy texture.

Expected rather harsh and brutal notes. This wasn't the case.

Don't think this wine will improve with time.

  • Dried fruit, stable, leather, tobacco on the nose. Taste is big and dry, with figs, red berries, leather, herbs. Long aftertaste, big tannin that still bite´s back. Good now, might not improve, but will last for another decade if you´re in to that stuff. Really good though!!

  • As you would expect from an aged Madiran, this is starting to show classic Bordeaux-esque characteristics. Blcakurrant, cedar, tobacco, plenty of wood in there. Colour, again, no surprises deep and dark. An all round well made wine.

The tannins are still very much in evidence, though they have softened considerably, which would lead me to think this still might have a bit of improvement left in it. At the very least, theres no rush to crack open one of these if you're thinking of hanging on.

  • Nose of manure and Barnyard, not really pleasant.
Palate is really tannic which is OK but it is also very dry a takes all of the fruits place, quite rustic and monolithic.
Did not like this vintage at all!

Tannins aggressifs. Finale amer et rapeuse.

  • Dense deep red colour. Complex nose with traces of dark fruit, mocha, oak, cedar. The fruit is somewhat muted on the palate. Would it improve with more air?

Tyvärr lite tunn i frukten. Vinner på att få en del luft. 90-91p

  • Intersting nose of iron and sour cherry. Some earthyness and leather as well. Little fruit comes out

Palate: Little fruit. backward wine with heavy tannins and acidity.

I'd say hold for another 5-6 years and maybe the fruit will emerge a little.

    No bad however !

  • -- decanted immediately before tasting --
    -- tasted non-blind over approx. 3 - 4 hours --

NOSE: initially, very tight; wet stones; cherry licorice; a touch leathery; moderate to moderate+ expressiveness with a couple hours in the decanter; sweet smokiness; fruit gets more cooked and a sweet Hoisin sauce note emerges after a couple hours, too; not complex to moderately complex, but very nice nonetheless.

BODY: sediment present; cork in excellent condition; deep cherry/blood-red color, with a hint of bricking throughout --- looks young; color is of medium-deep depth; medium-full to full bodied.

TASTE: very ripe banana – oak?; non-descript red fruits; pepperoni; long garrigue-flecked finish, which is of medium-light intensity; tannins are still very drying; good acidity; 12.5% alc. is not noticeable; slightly chalky mint note in the background after a couple hours; slight hint of sweet oak; tooth-staining; pretty impressive concentration and ripeness of flavor for a wine that is, allegedly, only 12.5% alc.; with air exposure, the fruits veer from the red fruit spectrum towards purple fruits, and the flavors also become somewhat muddled. Drinking well now, but I think this will continue to hold, and maybe even improve a little, in the cellar. Drink now through 2020.

  • Just a few notes. For a Cuvée Prestige quite supple. There are a lot of dark fruits and there is firm tannin, but the wine is already so approachable. From memory the 1999 is less impressive than 1998, 2000 and 2001. It would be nice to see how these wines compare around 2015.

  • Well structured and dense but slightly over the top. Only this bottle?

  • Popped and poured. First glass was extremely concentrated and very tannic. Decanted the bottle and left for an hour.
Bottle opened up a bit but remained very tannic the rest of the evening. Even the last glass the day after was still somewhat closed.
I don't share the very positive notes from other CT'ers. This bottle was lacking balance, especiially the fruit, maybe this was due to bottle variation, I hope so, I have a dozen minus 1 left, which I will drink let's say at a bottle per year. Still enojoyable though, but no 90+

  • 10-year wedding anniversary (At home in Kraainem, Belgium): Dark color, no signs of evolution. Powerful tannins still despite 2 hours decant,a dense mesh with lots of fruit and a very long finish. Really excellent. Ready, will hold many more years.

  • Decanted for an hour. Dark ruby, almost impregnable. Lovely nose of dark fruit, black cherries, raisins, dried figs, old leather and cigar tobacco. On the mouth it is quite expansive, with persistent dry tannins and a long finish. This is drinking very nicely now (with some decanting) and will probably continue to do so for a decade.

  • Madiran and the Wines of Alain Brumont (Vinothique, Queen's Road, Singapore): 100% Tannat, decanted 2 hours. I thought this was far and away the best wine of the night. Dark purple colour. Really lovely, layered nose that rather exploded out of the glass with complex scents of meat, leather, minerals, plums and a twist of pepper. Over time, some higher-toned, greener notes like cooked asparagus, mint and perfumed flowers and cloves emerged. While this was every bit as expressive as the normal bottling of Montus, I found it less OTT and much better put together. The palate was unfortunately not quite as wonderful as the nose! Still, it had an intense beam of flavour that seamlessly lasered its way from the attack to the long finish, showing concentrated dark fruit and ferrous mineral, before picking up a mocha tone right at the very end. Strangely though, the lovely concentrated flavours were anything but mouth-filling - this was a narrow band of intensity. I think Lawrence put it best when he said that a shift to the right or to the left meant that the lovely flavours receded. I found the edges almost watery in fact. All in all though, it was a rather lovely wine, great smooth mouthfeel with lovely balance in its velvety smooth but still grippy tannins and bright acidity keeping the wine very much alive. Went very nicely with the braised pork in dark soy sauce (Kong Bak Pao) as well.

  • Dark, inky red and clings to the glass. On the nose a deep inky purple with restrained fruit. On the palate, tannic and long. Not enormous complexity of fruit but tastes young and probably will improve although less intense than the best years.

  • Decanted 1 hour in advance. Dark robe. Bordeaux-like nose. Very solid indeed - lots of tannins, full bodied. Quite complex. Starting to come together. Excellent.

Décanté 1 heure à l'avance. Robe sombre, peu de traces d'évolution. Nez bordelais.
