This time I decanted even longer. 14 hours. It really is excellent QPR. What a fabulous finish. This will go on for 10 more years. Amazing how this wine changes after many hours of air. Classic tannic 2005 vintage!

Second from a case purchased ex-negociant, with perfect fill and the cork only soaked a millimeter or two here and there.
Wasn’t able to decant the way my last notes on this wine suggest I should have, but this bottle was not at all disjointed the way the first from this case was on day one.
No visual sign of aging. Red and black fruits, cigar box, and a whiff of truffles on the nose. This had an austere, high-toned, tannic palate of black and slightly candied red fruits that was holding back considerably, so I tried my first ever hyper decant after having one glass. Did it make a difference? Hard to say. The wine seemed more rich and relaxed, but who knows? Best at room temp. 13.5% ABV (***/16/90)

First from a case of twelve purchased ex-negociant, with perfect fill and the cork only soaked a millimeter here and there.
On day one, this had a beautiful, mature nose full of undergrowth and black cherry. Unfortunately, the nose had to carry whole experience. The palate seemed to be thin and a little out of balance, showing too much alcohol and acidity in the finish. The tannins could have been finer and more resolved, too. Very disappointing.
On day two, however, this was the wine I recall having two years ago out of a half (that led me to buy this case)—deep and dense and with years of life and development ahead of it. The palate, though firm with tannins, was very plump and cohesive now, showing a mass of black cherry and cassis.
One of the best Potensacs I’ve ever had. Right now, this is a wine to decant all day on day one or to have on day-two. Given that the 1996 Potensac has only just given up the ghost in the last few years, I would expect this to go on and on. 13.5% ABV (very good; distinguished/***/16.5/92)

Still young...and not yet fully resolved. A wine of tremendous weight, including heavy oak treatment...which has not integrated. Recommend holding bottles for three to five years...or decant for several hours. 91-92.

Old School, all the way. Blackcurrant, mint, black earth and gravel, spent espresso grounds, dark chocolate, drying tobacco, and graphite. High pitched, indeed, quite piercing. This bottle felt a few years from maturity. Perhaps some bottle variation with this vintage.

My third tasting note on this wine. This time, I decanted it for 12 hours. Much longer than before and it made a REAL difference. The wine really opened up and took on a new personality. What a fabulously long finish. A slight score improvement. It will be at its best in about 5 years, but it is still sublime right now if you give it some good decanting time!

A 3-point improvement on my previous tasting note. Due to my decanting for longer!… From a 1.5L. Decanted 6 hours with swirls every hour. Very tannic and not quite ready but can be had with a VERY long decant. I would assume a standard 750 is almost ready… The 2009 is younger but drinking better right now.

Additional time in the cellar has added a lot to this wine, in texture and complexity. The tannins have softened allowing all the ripe, deep, dark, fresh cassis, with its tobacco and herbal accents to shine brightly on the nose and in its full, firm, and almost round, red berry palate. Drink from 2022-2034.

13.5% alcohol. M 41%, CS 40%, CF 19%. The cork breaks 3/4 of the way, but this is my fault for using a poor corkscrew; the rest is easy enough to extract using a finer screw. Decanted an hour ahead. Medium to dark colour with some thinning at the edge of the rim. The nose is very vivid, red fruited with a hint of leather. Just as good in the mouth with good grip and excellent balance; in terms of evolution, this is not fully tertiary yet. There is some creamy feel which adds to the experience. Forty years ago, Potensac was the undisputed king of the Médoc Crus Bourgeois, and it is still to be reckoned with, although its star may have faded a bit. A wine that requires long ageing, which may be a problem in today's market.

Black berries, leather, vanilla and tannins on the nose. Tannic, with firm and a bit warm fruit on the palate. Rather foursquared and stubborn now, and needs more time to shed the tannins.

Tasted it from a 1.5L. Decanted half the bottle for four hours and left the other half in the bottle open. The first half was just very closed. Drank the other half the next day. Still tasted rather closed. Just way too young, perhaps a 750 would be drinking better. The best glass was the very last glass. The bottle had been open 30 hours!

I had a number of 1997’s of this late. A good wine & value in 97’s courtesy of Clyde Beffa. 2005 such a splendid vintage and still youthful.
Decanted around 11:45a today, poured with Allen Brother Ribcap at around 8:30o and it is velvet in the mouth.
Recent auction purchase for $35-$36 a bottle…in OWC. From the same Technical Team as Leoville Las Cases. Different terroir but, excellent experience.
Excellent, ripe candied fruit of; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, both plums, raspberries, baked strawberries, dark spices, black licorice core, mid & dark colas, river stone, limestone alluvials, dry crushed rocks, dry tobacco, leather, saddle-wood, dark, rich, forest floor with dry leaves, some tree sap, tea leaves, soft, round, fresh herbs, dark, fresh & withering florals that are; dark, red, blue florals framed in violets & lavender. The acidity is excellent. The finish has length, balance, polish for days that falls on excellent soft earthiness.
2007 Bordeaux’s are already following suit as the 97’s in a lot of cases…only better. Value vintages in Bordeaux if you go looking.
Excellent steak wine. Wagyu Allen Brothers Ribcap seasoned with coarse garlic salt, coarse black pepper and Whole Spice Brand “Napa Valley Rub.” Infra-red seared for :30 a side and finished over fine pre-charred wood on “The Green Egg.” Perfection!

(3/18/21) This wine, from a 375ml bottle purchased on the secondary market from a local merchant at retail, was impenetrably dark and youthful looking. It had cassis, black cherry, and tobacco leaf on the nose and cassis and black cherry on the exceptionally well-concentrated, juicy, slightly rustic, tannin-filled palate. The finish was medium long. 13.5% (***+/16/92)

HMMM. So the score is about right (the wrong side of 90). Amazed at the astringency of this; still has a lorry load of tannins stomping down the fruit (and even hiding the 13.5 a/c ). To be positive this is more characteristically bdx than some of the other higher-growths (like lynch bages). So, it probably has to be given a let-by to some degree.

An odd wine. Shows some tobacco leaf and cedar notes. Fruit seems mostly mature, but color still a vibrant crimson. Tannin resolving but still rather prominent, adding austerity and some bitterness to the back end. Despite the flavors being typical of maturing bdx, they don't mesh well and the tannins seem to have a bitterness I don't think will resolve. Maybe will meld together with more time but the mature fruit flavors seem to imply maturity. A puzzle. I have 2 more to follow.

Pnp. Showing it’s age at first, but after an hour and warming up, it filled out very nicely. Delicious, balanced, fruit present and 15-year secondary notes. Drink now.

13.5% abv. Modern styled Bordeaux, fruit and body over longevity. Plums, cherries, saddle leather, tobacco. Not sure this will develop further, I held on to a few bottles for last 5 years and this is drinkable, but not memorable and fairly one dimensional for a Medoc. Losing its structure, tannins - drink up.

Classic Bordeaux, well made, at a very reasonable price. So what’s the catch? The wine lacks a little precision and depth compared to fancier addresses. Nose of cherry, chocolate, roast beef. Medium weight on the palate. Strong minerality- so strong in fact, when combined with slightly gritty tannins it produces a metal shavings taste in the mid palate. 2 hrs air and although it could handle more I did not get the sense that some of the (admittedly slight) disjointedness would resolve. Many years left; not sure it will improve. I could easily be wrong. Nevertheless for the money, very good value. Score: 89. Relative to expectations: 0

Short decant. Luscious, generous, flowing glossy fruit. Compared very favourably to the Leoville Poyferee 2006 drunk from magnum before it - vintage effect or more merlot. With rare roast beef.

13.5% alcohol. CS 40%, M 41%, CF 19%. Very good long dense cork with no wine penetration. Decanted an hour ahead. Very good deep colour with no sign of ageing. The nose is vivid with a floral component added to ripe berries. The mouth has very good balance with just the right amount of grip. Highly satisfactory in a lightish style. This is ready to drink (and Potensac is notorious for being tough in its youth), but it feels like it will last another fifteen years. A textbook Médoc.

This long haul wine is holding form and going strong. Harmonious, balanced, and generous. A testament to the exceptional vintage and to deft wine making. Still young. It should hold form through 2035 or so. This would turn heads in a blind flight of same vintage Fifth to Third Growths.
Dense colour but lively; nose a little subdued of dark fruit and perfumed pepper; taste: initially closed, but after 1-2 hours emerges as soft and elegant. Not a big wine and with only reasonable mouthfeel, but it does broaden out into a soft and generous taste on the back palate (and, let's face it. that is where most wines end up). Classed growths will have more weight, but within its own terms this is a very finely-made wine, light but satisfying. And I haven't mentioned money.

Dark cherry color. This is my fourth bottle of 05 Potensac. It has softened and the tannins are pleasant, overall very nice wine at this time. Some tertiary elements, gentle fruits. Very nice wine, but not something that will create long-term memories. I'm happy to have a case from 2005, but wouldn't buy it at current prices. Enjoy!

At first a bit muted, after a while you finns mostly red berries. On the plate elegant, with wine but also very present tannin. Cassis, a certain sweetness but also quite fresh. I would place this in the "Classic" category, and I suppose it would have benefitted from being accompanied by a decent meal.

Deep ruby colour, incredibly young appearance, just showing the quality of the 05 vintage. Somewhat muted nose dominated by blueberries and blanckberries with tones of nuts (!), minerals (graphite) and coffee. Rather classic northern, Cabernet dominated, Medoc. Medium to full bodied, quite dry, lacks some fruit to cover the tannins and the alcohol. Still there is a nice aftertaste of black berries and coffee that lingers for a quite long time. However, I expected more from this wine. Could it be the bottle? The wine becomes more pleasant when drunk with a good steak, but then it is on the verge of being anonymous. Not very impressed.

Domaine Delon Masterclass (Vaucluse Cellars, New South Head Road): Plums over spice. It's a little rustic over slightly polished oak, sweet spice. Slightly leathery but there is also a quite perfumed top note and a slightly corked element. Juicy acidity, fresh, but the fruit is a little more muted here and the tannins are chewy and grippy. It also, oddly, feels a little green. Not for me.

The Grand Tour - day nine (Bordeaux): Meaty, cheesy and funky, black fruits, leather, perhaps a little forward for the vintage with some chalkiness on the nose. Quite drying taninns over slightly muted black fruit other than a certain leatheryness the tertiary characteristics do not translate to the palate, very savoury. Hmm.

Decanted for an hour. The Potensac was mild, clear, and lively, with the characteristic leather and balance of good Bordeaux, with the nuance of flowers. It seemed... not special but it seemed of very high quality. Expanding on that a bit- the Potensac was clearly a wine I preferred over the nice Spanish bottle Denise brought over, and drunk second. But as I sipped the Potensac it seemed to recede into the background, unlike blockbusters that force one to pay attention to every taste, but also unlike the similarily well-mannered but much more interesting 2004 Château d'Armailhac we had last month. 5 more bottles in my cellar, this was the first we've tried.

This wine was 5th ranked in the '05 Bordeaux tasting. It had a broad fruit nose that was a little sappy. The wine was light at both the front and back with an good fruit mid. Tannins were very light compared to most of the other competitors. A fairly simple wine, but with some pleasure in its passing.

Another impressive showing, conveying the feminine side of Medoc terroir, lush and suave fruit draping a powerful frame of medium plus acid and medium tannin. Generous and long mouthfeel. Oak is still integrating and when it does this could become special. A decade or more from full maturity. This would hold its own in a flight of same vintage Fifth to Third Growths. Excellent QPR!

During a LLC tasting dinner with ex chateau bottles, hosted by Directeur General Pierre Graffeuille, double decanted. TN: Medium garnet, nose of dark fruit, earth, spices, some oak, clearly Medoc. Still young and structured on the palate with a mineralic touch. Very good freshness. Wait a few more years before opening this.

Har this last night alongside the potensac 2010. Interesting comparison, i believe the 2010 will be better than the 2005 eventually.... The 05 has a nice graphite, pencil like nose, with plum and dark fruit lingering. Inviting palate, integrated tannins (quite heavy residues at bottom) which were smooth , especially compared to 2010! I think this is perfect drinking time for this one right now, not sure if it will improve much with time.

Once again, Jeff leve nailed it below. This baby is tannic and backward. The vintage just won't let up and if you make old school hard as nails bdx, it's gonna be a tough one. This has some blackberry and leather, but the rest is just tannins. It's quality, but don't expect it to be a welcoming wine. Drink in 2195.

Sampled this wine while pouring into the decanter. I will complete this note after the wine has had time to breathe and we've had a glass, or two. After this wine had a chance to breathe, it was wonderful. Nice layers of red ripe fruit, cassis, nutmeg and red licorice. Great balance and nice long finish. An elegant wine.
Really classic Médoc wine! Deep ruby red. Rich aromas of cassis, plums, cedar and some tobacco. In mouth, full bodied with firm but well integrated tannins. Rich aromas of cassis, plums, cedar and tobacco. Good aftertaste!
This drinks really well today, but will develop well for at least five more years.

An attractive dark ruby color with a tinge of purple, the nose is tight but pleasant and interesting showing forest floor, cherry, and black currant. Definitely a food wine. The earthy palate replicates the nose plus mushroom, ink, black pepper, and dark chocolate. It is fresh and vibrant with low/medium acidity and tannins and a smooth, lingering finish. A good companion to grilled red meat. It will stand the time for at least another five years.

What can I say? Perfect drinking now. All in balance and what a Bordeaux of this level should deliver in a vintage like this. Finish just a little short but the fruit is holding out well here. Has lost the rusticity Potensac can have at a younger stage. Not perhaps the 95 pointer but just a very pleasant and memorable drink true to the make and vintage. I could drink this for ever.

Like many other 2005's possessing pleasant aromas with a rich and flavorful palate that displays the overripe character of this vintage. Stewed fruit and off flavors that is OK for one glass, but grows tired with a 2nd glass. This example has better acidity that some others and this helps hold the wine together and give it some balance with my dinner.

Appearance: Bright and clear, with deep intensity ruby colour, paler rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium intensity and developing aromas of blackberry, prune, plum, cedar, liquorice, cloves and slight leather. Palate: Dry, medium (+) acidity, with medium (+) tannin of ripe and grippy texture. Medium in alcohol, with medium (+) body and medium intensity flavors of blackberry, oak, cloves, plum and black cherry. Medium length. Conclusion: Good quality Medoc red with a smooth and reasonably intense nose and palate, with fair complexity. Reasonable length accompanies the finish, with everything in balance and showing good ageing potential with the ripe fruit, high acidity and tannin. Ready to drink now but can benefit from further ageing of another 3-5 years.

I may be in a small group here, but this continues to be one of my favorite wines at $30. I agree maybe a Jasmin cote rotie at $45 or a Rostaing cote rotie at $52 or a bahans haut brion at $70, or a cathy corison at $65-$75, is as good or better, but hello, this is $30. I am going to buy another case. I might prefer a $25 haut vigneau or $30 gazin roquencourt but those are gone.
6-2-2011: We finished off the last of 10 cases yesterday. Can't think of any good locally available substitutes for a smooth, easy drinking, low alcohol, good bordeaux at under $30. (It also mixes really well with an Andrew Will 2006 ciel du cheval, but that is usually over $50.)

I am worried about this wine. Completely closed down at the moment. Even after 3 hours it wasn't giving many clues as to the road ahead. Medium bodied, rather easy drinking Bordeaux with notes of blackberry skin, structured tannin but not ready yet, quite dense. Sweet pure and pleasant medium to long finish of blackcurrant and plum pulp with note of caramel. Very typical Medoc. Pure and real good at palate and finish. All-round table wine.

Having drank the excellent 2001, I'm afraid the 2005 doesn't quite measure up. This is my 3rd bottle of the Potensac 05, and although this one is better than the previous two bottles, it still leaves something short from what was supposedly a good year in Bordeaux. I found it rather unbalanced, with plummy fruit and acidity overwhelming the alcohol and tannins. Nevertheless, taken in context, it was a decent drop during dinner.

Purple color. Spice and blackberry smell. Decanted for an hour. Initially a fair bit of black fruit with oak and spice, then faded. You can really taste the gravel. Never really settles down and this wine is either too young still or just not to my taste. Some cedar on the finish, decent length.

(bottle that was in trunk 2 weeks, including temps in 80s)Warm, sweet fruit, medium to full bodied, nose of cassis and cocoa. On palate fruit has a redder edge, fairly lush texture, some tannins but no real astringency. Good length. No noticeable signs of damage, though I wonder if a pristine bottle would have seemed as forward. I think I would have maybe pegged this as Right Bank blind. Nice wine, wonder what the others are like. B+/B

Wine Cellar - Bordeaux Left Bank (Wine Cellar): (Tasted Blind): Medium garnet colour with a nose of softened cherries, toasty oak, tobacco, spice, chocolate, and mocha. Expressive, linear yet with a modern cleanliness and feel this is still youthful. The fruit is ripe, and the wine is medium-bodied with some finessed chocolate cream showing good extraction. It has some elegance, but it is all about appeal, with lots of notes from the oak with coffee and spice and tertiary notes of tobacco and roasted herbs. That linearity keeps pressing and the tannins are firm and rising and somewhat shortening the finish.

This is a very good wine but it is nowhere near ready to consume right now. It has generous and ripe fruit as well as abundant and ripe tannins and expansive aromatics. But it remains extremely primal and not yet integrated. I was expecting this one to be ready now, but truly it needs to be in the cellar until 2014 and it will reward those with patience.

My favorite current reasonable bordeaux for drinking at home. At $30 a bottle, and 10% off a case, this seems a great deal today.
Not every bottle has been great but the most recent couple were very smooth and delicious, even more the next day.
After going through one case I realized this is popular at y house and bought another case.
Excellent everyday drinking wine, a bargain at the current price and beginning to open up and show what it has to offer.
Not powerful but mellow.
just keeps getting better. Just finished the last case yesterday, will certainly buy at least one more case.....
[added later: .I think we are now on to the 5th or 6th case. I just cannot find many wines this good for this price in my Atlanta market. Those who live in California, NY, Florida, ... or almost anywhere outside Georgia and Utah will have more options.]]
I think we ended up buying 12 cases. The store manager began to tease me and say he had sold some to someone else who deserved to have some as well. A lesser vintage popped up again more recently at another local store for $50, but i resisted.

A nice, well-balanced claret. Nothing to write home about, but a solid companion at the table. Moderate tannins- actually drinking pretty well right now after just an hour in the decanter. Good acidity. Nice with braised lamb shank.

Medium color and saturation. Cedar, ground coffee, and a touch of cassis on the nose. Medium weight and fresh, with remarkably expansive, powerful flavor of powdered bitter chocolate and fine, tongue and palate coating tannins that manage not to be hard or overly stern. While the wine did not gain much complexity with aeration, it did "unclench" and become more feathery in feel. I thought this was an impressive and interesting Cabernet-based wine that is "fighting above its weight". Excellent potential, especially if it gains just a little sweetness.

Brilliant, clear, ruby red color with deep rich velvet overtones. cassis and blaccurrent in the nose confirmed by the well balanced fruit and tanin flavors. Not as robust as some Bordeaux, nevertheless give another 5 years before opening next bottle.

I won't give this wine a score since I'm new to Bordeaux.
Bought it to cellar but figured I'd drink it for no particular reason. It had almost no smell, but what very little nose there was was earthy/leathery/spicy, and with a bright red berry undertone. It was tight in the way that makes a wine taste too cold even when it is at room temp. it had very little tannins, in the finish or otherwise, and really almost no finish at all.
I continued to taste the wine over 5 days. On the 3rd day it has opened up, gained more mouthfeel, a more tannic finish, and all of its flavor were a bit stronger. Still basically very little nose.
On the fifth day I finished it. It had a strong, sort of nondescript, slightly hot w/ alcohol nose, and was bitterly tannic. Very much filled the mouth with flavor.
have no idea what this means in aging potential, but if it could cange so much over five days it might become really good over some years? if I had more I'd open one in 3-5 years then reassess.

BORDEAUX 2005 / Cabernet rules; 4/5/2006-4/10/2006 (Bordeaux): A Medoc AOC made by the owner of Château Léoville Las Cases in St. Julien, Potensac is a very well known Medoc wine, and it did very well in 2005. A bit closed at first, then reveals good palate intensity, with fine grained tannins, deliciously fruity on the palate. Nice job. 89-91+

The mouth has very good balance with just the right amount of grip. Highly satisfactory in a lightish style.
This is ready to drink (and Potensac is notorious for being tough in its youth), but it feels like it will last another fifteen years.

Stewed fruit and off flavors that is OK for one glass, but grows tired with a 2nd glass.

Really enjoyed this wine - definitely a "new world" Bordeaux. Great back bone, bitter chocolate finsih and fine grained tannins. Logn finish - just seems "viscous". Would buy more.

Nice job. 89-91+
