(Not a) birthday dinner (Hinsdale, IL): Damn, this is so good. It's a different style from the oxidative, rich wines of yore (which of course poxed like no other), but it just works so well here. It's still old-school in that the wines are not overly reduced, and there is definite fatness on the palate here, but for me the most stunning part of this wine is the way the finish just lingers on the palate, for minutes at a time. Such an intense, potent example of the way chardonnay ought to be. Stunning.

Beautiful nose of flint, chalk, lemon zest, toasted almonds with a kiss of oak and honey at the back.
Punchy but elegant palate in the yellow fruit register. Spherical texture with fine beaded acidity and a hint of salinity. A gorgeous wine that is still very tight. This has sooooo much in the tank with immense upside, but it was not the showstopper that the 2014 Lafon Charmes was which I enjoyed 6 months ago. I would hold these for another 3 - 5 years. 94 today, but 96+ potential.

Served blind, this was the most dense and intense of the flight. Quite remarkable given there were two grand cru in the flight including a PYCM Montrachet. The midpalate is a monster, so palate staining. Loooooong finish. I hope that one day I get to try a fully mature bottle of this, but they may never exist because the wine is so delicious today who can resist pulling the cork?

A wonderful nose of aniseed, white peach, flint and lemon. So direct in the mouth, with fabulous line and fruit intensity. It really builds through the palate and is so focused on the back-end. Still very young, but a treat to drink.

A near perfect white burgundy? I would struggle to see how this gets better and certainly for a Perrieres, this must be a benchmark.
Beautiful nose with some popcorn and buttered white asparagus. Incredible minerality and a cutting palate that is vibrant with high acidity. A lingering finish, medium bodied and probably the ideal drinking window to start drinking these (notwithstanding the fact it should remain drinkable for at least another decade or two). At Beaugraviere in Rhone.

Young but already quite brilliant. Restrained power, bright, energetic, fresh, precise, but with loads of fruit underneath waiting to gain weight. Already mouthcoating and expansive. Searing, laser finish. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Notes from memory.

Very fine nose of lemon oil, celery, white flowers, coconut, faint vanilla. Subtle but distinct note of Indian curry leaf and cilantro seeds. that was glorious. Awesome nose 97. Fine precise acidity. Very long fine finish with salinity and flowers. 95. Wine popped with soft goat cheese (not goaty), pickled pine needles and the wine - amazing.

Domaine Romanee Conti Lunch (Phoenix, AZ USA): Served blind. Greenish gold color indicating youth, but this is flat out amazing. The quality of fruit, length, and richness are all exceptional. Ripe fruit with crisp acidity, this is so very succulent and easy to drink, but remains a serious wine. I want to bathe in it.
This was the best of the young whites today against stiff competition from Ramonet and Leflaive grand crus. Alas, the old whites still put the pups to shame, but one day this Meursault Perrieres will age into an absolute masterpiece. Shame this was my last bottle.

It’s interesting watching the evolution of Lafon as he finally (?) adapted to the ever increasing oxidiation issues the wines were having. Better late than never I guess? From 13 on you see a stylistic shift that introduced more reductive nature to the wine. This 14 was a ball of energy and tension coiled with lemon rind, bright Asian pear flesh, and white flower and a tense reductive body. As the wine grew with time you wanted the energy pulse harder and stronger. Still very youthful but delightful to drink.

Litt mer lukket enn de to foregående. Vent.

blind We had it after Genvrieres 2014, I would go now for the Genevrieres but the more experienced Burgundy drinkers would go for this one, at least it should last more. We will see. More reductive and more acidity than Genevrieres. 97+

Served blind. Best Meursault Perrieres today, the unanimous pick. Racy electric, tense, and clean. Really grabs you right from the first moment. Such minerality, precision, and cut. Young superstar with a big future ahead, a thrilling example of Meursault Perrieres.

Excruciatingly tight cork, hard to imagine even one molecule of oxygen slipping in. Tensile and very young. Poised, elegant, brisk, precise, so different than the oatmeal yeasty Lafons of yore. Not showing as much as the Charmes today but the Meursault signature emerges as it warms, prior to then it was all Puligny lookalike. Enjoyable now for its potential, a toddler prodigy.

This is a completely different wine than both Charmes and Genevrieres. Where the two mentioned wines have a winning personality and availability, this is a much more low-key and slightly reserved affair. After all, this wine got the most air of all, but was still quite shy. Maybe even a little hard to understand. On the nose this oozes with minerality, again ripe pear and sweet barrels. The nose has a depth that seems almost endless. As of today quite unresolved compared to much else we have been drinking this tasting. The wine oozes quality and complexity that may not emerge in 10 years. In mouth it is incredibly textural, textural, which gives an incredibly good mouthfeel.
This is a wine that excites curiosity more than it provides instant gratification. For those who have this in the cellar this is a wine to store for an even greater experience, although a great wine already today. 94 (w/upside)

Another excellent bottle, the 2014 Perrières has it all: Appealing matchstick reduction, a judicious application of oak, a slightly exotic floral quality, and dense yellow fruit. Lighter bodied and crisp in texture, gaining weight with air, with a fine mineral bead running from sip to finish.

Five winos excellent adventure , mostly in Burgundy; 6/7/2019-6/15/2019 (Beaune, France): Explosive nose displaying succulent dense yellow fruit, lemon curd, granny smith, a hint of pineapple, honey, spicy spices and wet stone. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated yellow fruit, unctuous and oily yet perfect balance and precision, bright acidity, strong mineral and the finish that never ends. It is richer and more opulent and has no flint like the Coche version but both is equal in quality. Dominique Lafon is making great wines since 2009, IMO.

Leiden again in Rotterdam at Fitzgerald: Wow, typical perrieres in nose and taste, all about focus, concentration and laser like minerality. Starts with citrus, minerals and acidity, it spreads out in many layers with long finish. Comtes lafon is so good in the last years.

Matchstick reduction, a judicious application of oak, lemon, and ginger define the gorgeous nose alongside an exotic floral component, perhaps due in part to the late June hail. Incredible concentration on the palate, with intense citrus wrapped around a mineral backbone running from first sip to the long, lingering finish. The 2014 Perrières is excellent. Incredibly drinkable today but best starting 2022.

Heidi's Redux: More Heavy Hitters (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN): Pale gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Wow, this is crazy good, a little reductive still, citrus, lemon, good acid, a huge mouthful of dry stone minerality with a good dose of toasted oak barrels. Not at its full potential yet. Love to see this again in 2 to 3 years. 94(+)pts.

Same btl as BradE. Hard to pick a white Burg of the night but this was clearly the most elegant & finessed between 3 greats that included two more exuberant wines in the 2013 Lafon Meursault Clos De la Barr & the 2014 Roulot Tessons. This the classiest of the 3 and truly Grand Cru in stature regardless of its 1er Cru legal status. This also had a lusher, less brash feel than the other 2 but I'm splitting hairs between 3 wines I loved nearly equally for different reasons. What a flight!!! Thanks Brad! 95pts+

So much potential here but for now it is shy and tight. It has so much elegance and is fine and flinty. It is piercing in the mouth with a palate that plays within a narrow channel. There are whiffs of blossom and chalk and balance is exquisite.
