Solid cork. Paired with spicy sticky ginger beer glazed chicken thighs over jasmine rice. Deep gold color. Nuits-Saint-Georges and Riesling - Q by Peter Chang (Q by Peter Chang - Bethesda, Maryland): Expressive youthful nose displaying rich sweet tropical fruit, pineapple, apple cinnamon, honey, lemon curd, sweet spices and mineral. Exceptional concentration, sweet rich yellow fruit, dense and oily, medium acidity and mineral, and a long ripe yellow fruit driven finish. It is sweeter than the Haag Auselese. Super sweet and super concentrated. Still very youthful and delicious.

Its a sadness drinking the last bottle of a vintage you held. This one was no different offering great memories for the future and what it was in the past. This is beautifully gold in the glass, appears to have weight. Nose is very fragrant, while and golden florals, honey, apricot jam, the subtlest hints of petrol. The palate delivers on potent honeyed apricots, tangerine citrus, apples underlying the acidity popping in the middle. Acidity is vibrant against the initial punch. The finish is lush however fades quicker than you'd think from how the front hits you yet does enough to keep you Its a lovely bottle overall, nuanced more than I can express. Los going on. Very strong expression and wish I had more.

My fifth bottle out of a case in a vintage where I did a lot of point (star) chasing in the Terry Theise catalog, and this one has never disappointed. 12 years later it's still so vibrant it tastes like it was vinified from the stuff used to make glow-sticks, and while the bottle age has softened its cut somewhat, it still retains plenty of Gatorade-dunk refreshment value. It's also gotten slightly deeper in tone but only in a relative sense as this remains one of the freshest and brightest of the '05s I've got.

Random Notes From a Saturday Night (Our House (2033 Brandywine St., Philadelphia)): House style is sweeter and this definitely has Auslese profile in a Spatlese bottle. Darker golden color. Honeyed fruit. Apricot. Apple. Very nice but a fascinating comparison to the Donnhoff Spatlese we had side-by-side. They were basically completely different wines although both were Spatlese designated from the Nahe (albeit 7 years apart in vintage). This has its place. The acidity bolsters this beautifully and it is so easy to drink, but it lacks the versatility and subtlety that made the Donnhoff so impressive.

Opened a bottle before dinner. Medium yellow color. Cork was solid. No petrol or sulfur in this bottle. Starting to show some secondary flavors. Notes of apricots, peaches and some tropical flavors. The acidity was still solid but not as prevalent as in earlier bottles. Still a good bit of sweetness (almost Auslese level). Rich and long finish. 94 points.
Starting to come around, but still dominated by its sweetness. Still, nice nose and deep, long, length. The mouth is equivalently deep, showing (I think) much promise.

Second of 3 bottles. First consumed in 2008. Stored properly but was barely corked upon opening. Still very creamy with tropical fruits; viscosity has increased. Mid palate was pineapple and mineral all the way. Long finish. Acidity has diminished or was bottle variance. Fruit still very, very strong. Wondering if this was slightly oxidized as the color was very dark.

My first bottle in six years and amazingly it's almost as awesome as I remember it. In fact, it's hardly changed at all except maybe the fruit is slightly deeper in complexion. But the energy, the dynamism, the cut (and, yes, the CO2) -- it's all still there. This just defines vivacious. You could touch a drop of this to a dead man's lips and his heart might start beating again.

Day three. I thought this wine was exceptional when first opened, and was planning to give it a 95-96. But, sorry Keith, this has simply gotten sweeter, and more one-dimensional (apple/pear) the longer it's been open, unlike my typical experience with top flight Rieslings which develop complexity for days and weeks after opening. Perhaps it's the lack of acidity, or just the vintage, which was very ripe. Pretty but not what I look for in my Rieslings.

The nose on this wine continues to impress. Lots of honey, pear, apple, candied citrus and slate. Mostly honeyed apple flavors on the palate. Definitely on the sweet side of spatlese and to me the acidity is not where I want it to be for a wine this sweet. Long finish though and overall just quite delicious.

Drank as part of a flight of 2005 spatlese rieslings. Light yellow color. Pretty nose of honeysuckle, pears and apples. Similar flavors on the palate with a sweet apple and light citrus notes. The wine was very sweet and rich in terms of mouthfeel. The acid while strong was not what it was when I had my first bottle a few years ago. It also didn't help that this wine followed an aboslute monster riesling in terms of acidity and complexity. Still very nice but I likely won't hold my last bottle for more than a few more years.

Light yellow color in the glass. Initially too cold but as it warmed up the nose started to show beautiful honeysuckle, slate, citrus, minerals and pear notes. The palate however is where this wine really shines. Ripping acidity to go with a sweet core of sugarcane, apples, pears and honey along with some more stone/slate notes. The acid in this wine will carry this wine in its development for 15-20+ years easy given the vintage. Stunning.

Sweeter than I wanted for this bottle of Spatlese, but no botrytis, so this was treading the line between a Spatlese and an Auslese. Incredible concentration of fruit -- lemon, green apple, underripe pear. A little more acidity would help carry the sugar through. Nice finish.

Very nice nose of orange fruit and white, non-perfumey flowers. Slightly sweet mouth with lots of fruit (white and orange, viscous sweet grapefruit), and lots more fruit, and some stony character somewhere. Excellent length that tapers off with nice elements that linger and fade well.

Decanted for 1hr. Very clean nose of apples, peaches, and wet stone. The palate really blew me away as it was big and ripe with only a little sweetness. Nice peaches, apricots, and orange with some type of spice/mineral quality I can’t put my finger on right now. This wine is extremely smooth and velvety in texture, finishing with great length.

I purchased (perhpas stole is a better word) a few of these for $7 and took my first one to dinner with some members of the CWM to welcome Haggis back into town from Hawaii. WS rated this wine 94 points. The Diel family purchased this estate back in 1802. After Donnhoff, Diel is probably the 2nd best estate in the Nahe. They own parcels in 3 Grand Cru sites including 11 acres of the steep Dorsheimer Goldloch vineyard which is composed of gravelly clay soil over bedrock and produce full bodied wines. This 2005 was no exception. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner of this estate, Armin Diel, last year when he was pouring the 2004 wines from his 2 other Grand Cru sites but this was the first time I have tried his wine from the Goldloch vineyard. Armin has called 2005 the greatest vintage in his estates history. A comment which should not be taken lightly since Armin Diel is also widely considered the most influential wine writer in Germany as well. I think this wine was served at the right temperature and not overly chilled. This had the ripeness of an Auslese (without being as sweet) but the vibrancy of a Spatlese. It walked a very fine line and showed the earmark of great German Riesling in its balance. Notes of apricot, peaches and jasmine with a leesy character on the finish. This will be a long ager but was drinking very nicely now before it has shut down. No detectable sulpher. Great purity in this wine. I can see this moving into the classic category with time. 93+ points.

Needs some time to settle down but has great potential. Has an interesting spice thing going on that gives a little bit of a masking to some very nice honeyed grapefruit and nectarine. This bottle was not quite as impressive as the one tasted last fall.

Monumental. This has the ripeness and sheer opulence of an Auslese but retains Spatlese-level clarity and backbone. It's awe-inspiring that a still wine can have a texture this dynamic; as the lemon-yellow fruit glistens and gushes on the palate it seems studded with diamonds -- or slate cut like diamonds -- and every moment it's in the mouth charts a new iteration, with different facets gleaming. The fruit is gelatinous in texture, but that's just the skin. Underneath it there's a skeleton tough as steel and black as night.

Grapefruit nose. Mouth full of passion fruit, very ripe tangerine, sweet pink grapefruit, orange rind, acidic zing, the surety of minerals. Long creamy, honeyed finish, with grapefruit and hints of pear still flickering even minutes later. Haunting and regal.

93+ points.

Pale color. Notes of tart apple, slate and a faint floral component. Rich stone fruit, slate and mineral flavors. Nice lengthy finish. Give it some time to develop. 90+.

Terry Theise Wines: Rich, ripe passion fruit with a little spice thrown in. This is a great spat. I tasted this at the begining of the tasting and went back at the end just to make sure I really liked it. I did!!!

Terry Theise Tasting 2005 (W): this will (as usual) need time but its a rich honeyed wine that has great depth and a long finish.
