20 Vintages of Brane Cantenac: My limited experience with Brane has been mostly positive, and this tasting confirmed my initial thoughts: these days, Brane is A) usually quite accessible and charming, even young; B) the quality has steadily improved over the years, the wines are becoming more complex, precise and balanced; while vintages pre 2015 often seemed a bit simple, more recent vintages show better, C) the aromatics in recent vintages remind me of Ch. Margaux, with beautiful ripe red fruit core, as well as floral and coffee components; and D) the quality/price ratio is exceptionally good (not considered for the ratings). E) The best wine was the ethereal 2020 (96 points), followed by a superbly fresh 2010 (95 points). Although the quality is exceptional these days, the Chateau didn't fully nail every vintage, the 2019 (93pts) and, more surprisingly, the 2016 (93pts) were strong but a tad too ripe and sweet.
TN: Not a particularly strong vintage, this bottle performed quite well. The winery certainly pushed the ripeness as far as they could and gave it quite a bit of oak and this showed: Quite expressive dark fruit core on the nose and palate with some additional layers of cola, burnt sugar and herbs. The tannin structure was a bit harsh and first but with time got softer and softer, but unfortunately some of tannins were green and no amount of air could have changed that. 90/91pts.
Decanting: Not decanted. 30-60 minutes in a decanter should be sufficient.

Vertical of 20 vintages - Chateau Brane-Cantenac: It was a pleasure to taste 20 vintages of Brane-Cantenac. All wines were tasted blind and with little time (10min per flight of 4 wines). Coming from the Margaux appellation, the wine convinced 1) with its accessibility of all vintages, 2) often very feminine and fresh vinification and 3) especially the consistency of quality to be emphasized. So it was not surprising that all 20 bottles (for the first time in this tasting with 12 people) were empty. At the same time, it could also be noted that the very great complexity for ratings above 94 points is often somewhat lacking. Very exciting to observe were the significant change in fruit. Until the 2009 vintage, this was often primarily red-fruited, light and very strongly Cabernet influenced. From the 2009 vintage on, a clear shift to more extraction and sweetness of the fruit is noticeable. The last, often great vintages from 2015 to 2020 are ripe but still with a good freshness/acidity (except for 2015 according to my impression).
Tasting Note: - More wood on the nose but rounder with more dark fruit. On the palate nice, richer in dark fruit than the predecessors 1998 and 1995, is nice to drink for me. Clearly better, is a bit richer in fruit but with very nice acidity - fun to drink even if the acidity is probably too high for some. The velvety is thus somewhat missing. - 91-92 points

Nose of tobacco, cedar, cassis. Mouth of tart fruit with some grip to the tannins and a medium finish. Perhaps on the decline. Decent wine but not necessarily memorable.

Margaux da manuale. Fine, elegante, persistente, giocato sui fruttati, ribes ancora croccanti, bacche nere, sentori erbacei, cuoio, sottobosco, menta. Equilibrio, tannini super maturi, struttura quanto basta, ma persistenza da vino dì razza. Più dì quanto ci si attenderebbe da un 99. Nel pieno della maturità, ma non da particolari cenni dì cedimento.

Medium bodied, finesse in style, this elegant charmer is fully ready to deliver all its soft, fresh, earthy, floral, leafy, red berry character. The wine was made with a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

This was deep red with no bricking. Tasted youthful but it was ready. It took about an hour in the bottle to truly express itself. This was not thin or fading. The bottle was stored well and the cork was in great condition. Great structure and body. Dark fruits and a slight spice nicely integrated. Medium finish. Went very well with steak. Started to fade after 4 hours. I think it has peaked but has life left - say 5 years at least.

PnP. Thin and diluted. After third consecutive disappointing experience, first 1995, then 2002 and now this, I have just about given up on Brane Cantenac. Gravely overrated wine in my opinion. At the very least, clearly not in the same league with Lascombes. By the way, I can't believe I bought another 1999 Bordeaux!

Opened 2 hours prior, not decanted. Very light rust on the rim and otherwise crimson. Strong raspberry on the nose. Light mouthfeel on the first touch, thickening only slightly toward the finish with light tannins still present. Plenty of fruit; bursting really. Raspberry, blackberry, light smoke. Though not complex and light, it has held up very well and was a nice surprise of the early courses of an Italian-inspired Easter dinner.

Bricking at the rim; slightly caramelly nose with spice soy and earth alongside some pretty red fruit notes; supple, flavoury and elegant palate. Nice flavour though fruit is fading fast - this needs drinking.

This is a very nice, light, Bordeaux. There is a black cherry theme which runs through this wine more like a Burgundy than a Bordeaux. There is also a distinct note of Terroir which keeps the fruit from dominating. Hints of chocolate and dark berries are also present. The wine is definitively light in color and weight and is nothing like the classic Bordeaux wines which we all covet, however, that does not stop this wine from being enjoyable.

Enticing nose of redcurrants, a touch of plum and then some cedar. Quite lush, blackberry and blackcurrants, underscored with Margaux silkiness and elegance. There is still a trace of tannin, but they're less obtrusive than the last time I tried this. Interesting to compare to the 98 we drank simultaneously, this has less intensity and less fruit. Very enjoyable, but not as good.

Drank at Restaurant La Savoie. Ordered and decanted 45 minutes before trying. I never have had this wine. Very dark, still opening up, tight tanins @ 45 minutes. Now wide awake and excellent! Fairly big persona, but equally eloquent. A Elizabeth Taylor or perhaps Sophia Loren sorta wine, if you go for that sorta broad ;-). You can drink this wine with any fish and most meat.

Pretty intense burnt toast on the nose for about the first 30 minutes, but this blew off to show lots of dark fruits, green peppers, and a bit of muddy earth. Tannins are still pretty strong, but are beginning to integrate and are never overwhelming. I think this would show much better with a big piece of meat. Lot's of life left in it, and if I had another, I would sit on it for another 5 years or so.

Clear, light red color with earth, green peppers and some funky truffle notes on the nose. Lighter side of medium bodied with a nice balance of acidity, weight and length and decent fruit. Tannins are pretty much fully resolved at this point and give way to a very smooth finish. Probably as good as it will get and very tasty. Matches well with some nice med-rare hanger steak.

not an exception wine nor an exceptional year. Still, strong backbone and although tannins had faded remained a bit astringent. Light touch on the fruit, with notes of tar and cigar. A nice bottle, but could not hold up against a superior Chilean cab that night.

Holding up well. Nice dark color only beginning to fade. Nose is musty cherry and cassis with a bit of funk. Palate is soft, round with red cherry, currant and some secondary flavors of earth, vanilla and leather. Finish is medium. Drink up within the next few years.

This is a charming, delicious wine that I would drink again and recommend even though it is not monumental. Beautiful well delineated cherry component nicely accompanied the tobacco, cedar, and vanilla on the nose. Medium bodied, this wine does not possess much concentration, but I liked it because it played a trick on me: tasted blind I would have easily pegged this as some kind of sangiovese wine, despite its medium garnet color. Delicate and nuanced, this wine has a decided margaux character, even if it is somewhat diluted.
