The Roots Fund Charity Wine Dinner (Atelier - Chicago IL): Small glass alongside the 2015. Enticing floral start. Big and firm, nearly backward right now. So much depth on the very long finish. The rare Roulot that will benefit from more than a decade in the cellar.

What is happening with Roulot? Nicely pale and softly and sweetly fragrant upon opening with delicious medium weight flavors. But at the restaurant it sullenly retreated and became an almost generic tart white wine lacking generosity and complexity. Does it just need a lot more time to come out of its shell? I don't believe my bottle was mistreated or the initial impression would not have been positive.

Quite crystalline in appearance with a hue of gold, surprisingly open in fact and showing sings of generosity from charming Charmes. Touch of butter and popcorn otherwise mineral honed, a very complete wine. Should be a belter in 5-10 years but already so good now!

14 roulots are damn near crystalline. Light in color, feather like weight, loads of acid and bright lemon and peach. Pure laser like focus down the center of the palate and lingering into the finish. While the 97/04 were about the weight of Charmes, the 14 showed off the vintage far more.

Bright pale gold. A reticent but pretty nose shows green apple and matchstick reduction. Flavors of tart apple pair with a killer mineral core. Crisp acidity. Drink starting 2022.

Rich and expressive with pure white peach fruit. There’s a suggestion of preserved lemons and it is unctuous and powerful in the mouth. It has lovely fresh acidity and is very long.

Full, rich, dense and sappy. The ripe orchard fruits are infused with minerals. It tightens up towards the finish and is chewy and long. A wine of latent power.

The Roots Fund - Chicago Fundraising Dinner (Atelier - Chicago, IL): 14/15 side-by-side. The 14 is still a few years from the more here and now 2015. Still plenty of pleasure in the 14 but there is more in reserved. Upside from here.

Burgundy bottles drunk with lunch or dinner while in Burgundy; 11/20/2017-11/25/2017: Off the list at Maison Colombier in Beaune. Criminally young, but the wine was so expressive and generous. Power apple and nectarine fruit is rich, but matched with chewy acids. Great mineral streak.
