  • Clearly drinking at the beginning of its prime. Really, can it get any better than this? I’ll leave that one last point just in case my last bottle, which I will probably drink in another four or five years, manages to surpass this one.

  • Went head to head vs 14 Promontory. Not completely fair as Promontory got a flash decant while the ‘crow was slow ox’d for 5 hours. By the last glass it obvious how completely different both wines were yet both were just stunning. The scarecrow is a beautiful wine, amazing tension and fruit integration. Will continue to improve for many years.

  • An awesome wine that is aging well. Very smooth and balanced, a superb Napa Cab.

  • Decanted and drank over three hours. Last glass may have been best, but it was a slow process. Restrained fruit and mineral. Right now, I prefer the 13 and even the 12.

  • Popped and let air for approximately 45 minutes in the bottle. Beautiful nose of black fruits, a hint of vanilla and spice. In the glass, opaque, dark red in color. Beautiful flavors of black cherry, Cassis, a hint of blueberry? Super young, with many, many years ahead, but couldn’t resist opening. Paired with veal chops, this was a stunner. Drink now, with at least two hours, decant in a flat bottom decanter, or hold for another 3 to 6 years for further development. Beautiful wine!

  • From magnum.

Slow ox for 4 hours. Poured and shared with friends, so was consumed pretty quickly!

Just as good as it gets for me. The mouthfeel and balance on this wine is impeccable. Pure Rutherford brilliance. Doesn't really need food; just pour and enjoy. Stunning.

  • Scarecrow - Complete Vertical 2003-2019 + 2x PNV: Non blind. Not decanted. It is obvious, why Scarecrow has the status it has. This is truly one of the very best Napa wines. A few observations: 1) The absolute highlight in almost all vintages is Scarecrow’s ability to combine aromatic density and intensity with absolute weightlessness. Very, very few Napa Valley wines achieve that kind of weightlessness - other than Harlan, probably no other wine that consistently over the vintages. More recent vintages are of course a touch less weightless (due to their youth) but are as light and airy as any wine in the respective vintage. 2) The wines have a lot of substance with a flavor profile with lots of red berries and floral notes complementing the dark Cabernet fruits, always lots of earthy minerality and some herbs and sensuous, luxurious oaky notes reminding me of Cheval Blanc. 3) While probably Bordeaux-esque for Napa standards in its appearance, it is still distinctively a Napa wine. In the early years, I even found a touch too much ripeness and some alcohol heat in the wines which doesn’t seem to be an issue in the vintages of this decade. 4) These wines all are great to drink, only the structured vintages of 2010, 2013 as well as the 2016 were not really open for business and would have needed decanting. All others showed great right out of the bottle.

TN: I expected this to be quite similar to the 2012 (rated 95 pts), a tad fresher and less ripe than most other vintages in the last decade but the contrary was true: this shows the ripest profile with lots of ripe dark fruit with less blue/red berries and floral notes but still a chunk of minerality and herbs to keep it in check. Also a touch less pure than most others. Still this is a layered wine with fine tannins, good acidity, airy feel and good balanced. I guess on its own and following it over a few hours could have brought out more. 93 pts.

Decanting: Not decanted. My guess is that this needs 2, 3 hours in the decanter at this point.

  • A complete Scarecrow vertical: Cassis, dark fruit, black chocolate with whole hazlenuts. Not as balanced as other vintages, with quite some broad shoulders, I really liked it nevertheless.

  • The 2014 Scarecrow was drank blind, side by side with the 2014 Darius II. THE SC retails for around $800 and the Darius II for $250, and there isn't a $550 difference between these two wines. Both wines had a similar scent of blueberry, oak and the usual high-end CA cab nose which is very pleasing. The DII visually had a little more of a rose rim, while SC was deep dark purple. The taste was similar as well, but there was more of a core of dark fruit and density to the SC, which was also multi-dimensional and unctuous. The DII was lighter on it's feet, while the SC had velvety, fine-grain tannin. SC was double-decanted with 7 hours aeration. In the end, SC is overpriced given the current cost of DII. Thanks for sharing Scott.

  • Really nice. Not sure about the price though :(. Prefer lusher Cali cabs with my steaks...

  • Decanted over cocktails. Magical cult Cab with incredible density and viscosity, bright, clear, pure cassis, kaleidoscopic palate like an Everlasting gobstopper with dancing notes of tobacco, licorice, wet earth, spice, and blueberries. This is an amazing winery that consistently produces unique and wonderful wine year after year. Bravo!

  • Guys dinner with DJ Warner in Houston. Several Keplinger wines presented by DJ and a good friend brought this bottling to dinner. SC 14 was consumed along side Keplinger's 16 OR Vineyard as the highlight of the night.

Unfortunately no formal notes. 8 guys sitting at the table and we each had one glass. No decant. I remember this wine had beautifully silky tannins. Excellent showing for the brief display. Wish I could have tasted this stand alone with a note pad as dinner was finished with old fashions. What happened!?

  • Very smooth and silky. An exceptional wine. Perhaps not as much fruit intensity as I expected, but very nice.

  • Exceptional depth and long finish. Young.

  • This wine was constantly evolving through the 8 hours we had it open. Notes are for where it kind of settled after 5-6 hours.

Dark fruits on the nose with some underpinning red berry—strawberry, raspberry—pencil shaving, dirt, floral aromas.

Sits lightly on the tongue but has a ton of structure. Dark fruit notes carry through along with a good dose of spice. A lot of tannins but they remain graceful. Nice acid.

Finish is not overpowering. Medium plus length.

This is a fabulous wine that still needs a lot of time in the bottle.

  • NFN: dark spices and fruit. Toms off tannins and body

  • Absolutely one of my favorite wines. The 14' has evolved beautifully and is the best Scarecrow I have had. Spice driven, velvety and fruit forward bomb. Powerful and yet balanced this wine is worth every penny. I challenge anyone to find a better Modern Napa Cab.

The 2014 vintage of Scarecrow is very special. It's nose is rich, berry laden, ripe and nuanced with floral notes. Scarecrow lives up to the "Cult" status. Deservedly one of the greatest out there. Massive, structured, layered whereby each sip reveals yet another note. All this amidst fine tannin and silky mouthfeel. I can say more but I can't possibly say any less.

  • Decanted briefly; needed an hour to open up. Dense and very spicy, strong tannins, too strong for some at the moment, palate-filling, long finish, pure dark silky fruit. I expect this to achieve more balance with some bottle time. Scarecrow is one of the cult wines that is amazing right on release, then they evolve at different speeds and in different directions. You never quite know which way they are going to go, but always quality.

  • Perfect balance of power and pretty. Black currant and red currant. A little plum. Some perfumed floral notes. Firm, but unobtrusive tannins. Orange Pekoe tea. Nice little hit of acid on mouthfeel. Minutes-long finish. Final glass better than the first.

  • This edition of Scarecrow deserves all the hype. One of the most complete wines out there. Immediately hits you with a glorious nose of spring flowers, cassis fruit, dark cherries and forest floor. Super deep and concentrated on the palate, it's at once super fresh and massively built, simultaneously expressing wonderful fruit character with deep earth and mineral driven notes. The tannins are super fine and well integrated, the mouthfeel is pure silk, it's layered for days and the finish is off the charts long.

  • Decanted and served. While presenting differently from other vintages of Scarecrow, this was singing after an hour of air. At first quite dense with mysterious hints of licorice and earth. With air, the palate relaxed and lightened although it didn't reach the magical tongue-dancing seduction of other vintages. More typical of Napa Cabernet, this was completely accessible with good acid and tannins and a long finish featuring toasted mocha terroir and a touch of licorice. Will hold the next bottle for a bit to see what evolves but don't be afraid to drink one now.

  • I'm with J.S. on this one.
While an extremely well made wine with no obvious flaws, I was a bit underwhelmed. In fact, I think the '14 M Etain opened a month ago had greater depth and energy.

Very clean red fruits, very fine tannins, but nothing to grab my attention. I'm going to wait a few years before opening any more and hope this one comes around. Meanwhile, I have the M Etain to keep me going!

  • Very young wine that was fantastic at 4 years old and will get better each year. Long finish, classic Rutherford dust, extremely balanced wine that hit all the sensors. Could tell this was a great wine just based off the nose.

Had at a restaurant where we had it decanted about 20 minutes before we were seated at our table. Continued to open up thru the evening.

Side comment - I’d probably give this wine more points if/when i have it again in 3 or 4 more years.

  • 6.5 hour slow ox. Also had a 2014 MacDonald and Myriad Dr. Crane open.

This was the favorite. While the Myriad was punching mightily, and the MacDonald was a brooding beauty, this was the most polished and glorious wine. A big wine, but so well composed -- Rutherford dust for days and a looooong, balanced finish.

Maybe just a tick off the experience I had with this vintage about a year ago -- but minor. We're talking 99.5 for me. Not even sure it required all of the air time we gave it.

I stand by my previous assessment -- can it cellar? sure. But it is fabulous right now.

  • Drank at Morimoto via Coravin.
Wish we had more time to decant it. Dark plum, tobacco, and a loamy earth texture, emanated from a smooth balanced flavour profile from start to finish. Overall a very balanced wine, however not my favourite wine, perhaps one dimensional as I didn’t see much acidity or change in flavours throughout. Again, wish we had more time to let it develop as I feel this might have enhanced the wine. In short for the price point I wouldn’t be buying it again.

  • Blind Wine Tasting at the Lang's (Tustin CA): Served blind. Dark purple in the glass. Distinctively rich and intoxicating nose of spring flowers, blackberries, cassis and wet stone. On the pallet -- Now THIS is what I'm talking about. Insanely deep and powerful without a hint of sweetness. Rich, with unbelievable purity and complexity. A weightless monster -- the classic iron fist in a velvet glove. Lots of great black/blue fruit balanced beautifully with herbal and earthy notes. So fresh! Finish of over 1 min. One of the best Scarecrows ever for me (2009-2014). 99-100.

  • beautiful wine with layers of complexity. Its little sister the M'Etain was favored over this wine but it is extrodianary all the same. finish lasts a minute
Opened and decanted at 9am and poured at 6 pm. Delicious from the start

  • Maybe my expectations were too high but this wine did not seem to be anything special. Decanted for a few hours and served with food but this wine left me asking why i paid so much. Clearly a well made wine but it didn't do anything exceptionally well. Yes it was smooth, well integrated but it did not have a long finish, fruit was good but not great. Seems to be a lot of better wines out there for the price point. I will lay my other bottles down for a few years and revisit after they have some age on them and hope that does the trick!

  • Enjoyed at a restaurant. Pop and pour - no decant. Didn't need it.

What can I say, this is everything I can ask for in a wine. Explosive power, combined with a graceful seamlessness. Just waves of flavor on the back end of this wine.

I mean, I guess it can get better with time? But wouldn't be hesitant to pop one in the near term - it is so vibrant and gorgeous right now.
