An engaging nose of floral spice, grated ginger, pomegranate and cherry. It is complex, deep and layered. It has so much flesh and a finish that is spice laden and oh so long. It has a high degree of elegance.

SHOCKED how youthful the wine was showing. The nose still showed a bit of toasted oak spice but filled with intense dark red fruit and the classic leroy cool sous bois. Strikingly primary on the palate still with broad pure cool cherry fruit. Would not have guessed 1990 due to how balanced and elegant the fruit is on the wine. I've always found 1990 Leroy to tend to be on the brasher bigger scaled side but this was fantastic in its elegance. The fine grain tannin is well integrated into the wine. Never thought I'd say that about any 1990 Richebourg let alone Leroy!
Blinded and it showed so much freshness and energy people were guess 201x burgundy. The age shows through the earthy mushroom notes, but the fruit is incredibly deep, pure, and pretty.

Deep ruby in colour. Medium nose intensity with notes of ripe red cherry, fresh black current. Slightly mushroom. Still primary and not into secondary or tietrary. Medium+ acidity and tannin. Long finish and medium+ body. Very surprised for a 31 years wine that it’s still very young. Excellent wine making.

Showing very well, with great depth and refinement, and not overly roasted or overly House-styled. Enough depth and freshness that it should be going strong for another 10-15 years.

Surprisingly, this showed quite young, and didn't exude 1990 as the vintage frequently does. A beauty of a wine though, and really no hurry on well stored bottles.

NM DRC v L RSV R dinner. Table preferred nearly perfect DRC 90 Richebourg alongside due to slight initial heat, but tie in my view. There was an unusual super clean, almost antiseptic quality to this wine. Great energy and slightly licorice, alcoholic aromatics to start, but became so attractively polished, candied and sweet. (2270/2890)

Dark red in color with bricking, transparent. Even after 4 hours of air wine is still rather tight. Nose needed active swirling to unfold, with ripe red fruit, slight tar, spices and deep floral elements. Palate with slight secondary flavors, ripe dark red fruit, big and deep like a Richebourg should be. Very good and no rush to drink up.

Dark red-garnet. Aroma very mute; for two hours, it was difficult to coax anything beyond a recognition of red wine. On arrival, smooth but firm, elegant tannin, low acidity. This is an imposter. I cannot believe that the wine from this bottle is related to the other bottle of Richebourg (let alone other 1990 Leroy releases) that we bought at the same time. We found no similarity to the house style, nor to the origin nor to the vintage pattern. Impeccably stored in our underground locker since purchase, this bottle seems to be a fake. I fear we were duped by someone in the distribution chain, though I trusted its seller. Purchased on futures, from The Wine House, Los Angeles.

OK wine, but really disappointing for mature Richebourg. Dull on both nose and just a bitbetter on palate. Where is the elegance, the majesty of great Richebourg? The meat is there but not the sizzle.

Grand Cru Burgundy Blow-out at Troquet (Troquet, Boston): The Hallelujah Chorus seemed to sound as this wine was opened. Gorgeous aromas of candied blackberries and white flowers. Very highly toned. Highly extracted and sweet on the palate. This is one of my very favorite wines. At first, it seemed like you could pour it over waffles and enjoy it that way but it toned down over the course of the evening to be much more typical of Richebourg. I have had this twice before and the first time I gave it 100 points. The second time the bottle was off and I worried about bottle variation. This one was again singing (in a rather loud voice). Everyone should taste this wine one time. This was the #2 wotn at this extraordinary dinner, only because the 90 DRC Richebourg was just a hint better on this night.

Very interesting comparison of 1990 Leroy behemoths - the other one was the Clos de la Roche. This one was equally dark, almost inky and deeply extracted in the house style. The sense of dark berry fruit was stronger in the Richebourg, but it takes some imagination to discern Vosne spice. It's clearly still on the young side at age 19. More impressive than delicious, but I can easliy see why these Leroys are crowd pleasers.

Absolutely one of the very best wines I have ever had the pleasure to drink. I opened this at a birthday bash along with several of my best bottles that I had been saving for a special occasion including 82 Pichon Lalande from magnum and 90 Guigal La Landonne. The Leroy was served in a flight along with a 90 Mugnier le Musigny and it was the Leroy that just blew everyone away with it's searing nose of sweet blackberry - and incredibly delicious flavors of intense blackberry and sweet cherry. The finish went on for days but it was the clear and explosive fruit tastes in this 17 year old burgundy that blew everyone's mind. If you are a true terroirist, you might downgrade this for not tasting as much like a classic grand cru as the Mugnier, but when a wine is as delicious as this, no one really seemed to care.

Dinner at Rubicon and a surreal pre-tasting (San Francisco, CA): Well this is something new! The nose is deep, smoky and earthy with layers of tar and peat moss. The palate is like silk with more layers of earth. The finish seemed a bit acidic at first with lots of sour cherry, but as my palate got used to the first red wine of the day this seemed to lessen. Wow, what a great bottle of Burgundy! In hindsight, as I compared this to the 1992 Leroy Musigny, this wine seemed rather closed and less giving in retrospect.

DRC Versus Leroy with the Burghound (RSV and Richebourg) (Bouley): Shocked at how primary this is now as is the DRC. I would guess 5 more years to tell but shows great promise. Deep, dark, dense and hidden.
