Finished summer evening with this to celebrate mother's 80th. Lots of fruit, nuts and umami coming from the balanced acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, then the vanilla, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel. The latter more nuttier and subtle flavours were not as present in this vintage as in others, but that first burst in the mouth is unique to Yquem.

No notes taken. This showed wonderful with lots of fruit, saffron, spices and some shy nutty notes as well as a perfectly balancing acidity. Fabolous precision, a fresh, light and creamy texture, good length. The complete package with the only thing missing for a higher rating being a more complex aroma profile. Impeccable and so much fun to drink. In terms of quality/price ratio, there are not many fine wines offering more than Yquem does.

Grand Bordeaux 2000 horizontal tasting; 6/20/2021-6/21/2021: Grand Bordeaux 2000 tasting with ~60 wines from the vintage hosted by a private collector. All wines were poured directly from the bottle with no decant and served in flights of 4. As general observations I would highlight: 1/ Today the 2000 is, without a doubt, a right bank vintage with Pomerol the star, 2/ the vast majority of wines are still going strong with hardly any past their peak 3/ On the left bank, St Estèphe was most ready to drink with a lot of wines in a closed stage right now, 4/ On the left bank, 2nd to 4th growths were generally more open for business than the 1st growths which almost all closed, only hinting at their full potential. 5/ If you must open a left bank bottle, Margaux is the safest place to look. Complete scoring overview and additional commentary included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: Signature saffron, quince and candid apricot, not as faceted and complex as 2015 maybe, but in an absolutely perfect spot right now. Acidity provides fabulous freshness. Texture is creamy and to die for.
With K&O, Joey and Katerina...another fantastic dinner made by Joey. Last wine of the evening, from a split. Nicely chilled.
Gold, chestnut color. Tangerine, orange marmalade, dried apricot, honey, almonds. Very nice, not as much depth as expected. May have needed more air time

Palate impediments. Splashed on the rocks to render an “insanely generous” gratuity merely “excessive.”
“Bad bottles” of Yquem share space with “flavorless Kyotan meals” in the saddlebags of the “Unicorns and Pegasi” out-guarding the “gates of hell” wherein resides “the Devil...”
(“Warm Chestnuts” and “candied citrus zest” were among the “notes and notions” both noticed and named by the nostrils and noggins nearby..

It isn’t the 1967, but I found the muted sweetness (RELATIVE TO OTHER YQUEM) charming.
Candied orange peel, marzipan, whiffs of cinnamon petrol and brioche (honeydough), as well as I forget, pardon, notes elsewhere. Furniture polish buttered cedar like... DELICIOUS Wine.
As good was the sip left in the bottom of a glass the next afternoon, that I immediately found a case of halfies.
If you like the less sweet Chateau Y: try the 2000. It’s proximity to the 2001, which I’ve owned and sold twice, as the hype eats the earth, keeps this underrated. (I apologize to those among the “Yquemerie” to whom this knowledge is old hat.)

Dried fruit, butterscotch, and cedar. Rich, plushly textured, but excess alcohol given the dry extract and fruit. This comes across as more like a straw wine than one driven by botrytis. A fine Sauternes but not a good Yquem.

I might be a little unfair in the rating as our group had consumed 6 bottles (one of them a magnum) of red at my birthday dinner. What I do remember is the nice yellow color, the nose of candied fruit. The palate was apricot, pineapple and sweet tea. The finish was full. It was excellent but did not blow me away as some other d'yquem's have done. Again perhaps the amount of Cabernet consumed earlier took a toll on our taste buds.

Tasted after 1990 VCC. Again quite a bit of bottle variation. While the first bottle wasn’t flawed, the wine was much darker and more evolved in colour. Quite tired on nose and palate, lacking vibrancy and lift, a bit heavy, cloying and simple (88-90?). The second bottle was lighter in colour, much fresher and detailed. Floral notes, marzipan, orange peel, caramel. More tension and lift on the palate, great acidity, lovely length. Drink or keep. 92-94

Davyd's Birthday Celebration 2017 (Extra Space): Slow-oxed in bottle for 1 hour before drinking. 750ml bottle. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, amber-gold colour. Legs. Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of marmalade, blood oranges, honey, apricots. Developing. On the palate, sweet, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of white chocolate, marmalade, blood oranges, apricots, baked sweet apple, honey. Long finish. Very good quality. A bit disappointing for an Y'quem though. Well understandably, 2000 wasn't a good Sauternes vintage. This feels somewhat straightforward and lacking excitement.

John comes to town! (Amali (115 E 60th Street, NY, NY)): How can one not love D'Yquem? And yet I'd say this wasn't exactly showing as well as some others that we've had. It's definitely good - loads of different flavors and paired very well with a citrus cheesecake the restaurant had on the menu, but with D'Yquem my expectations are to be blown away and this didn't quite do that.

Notes from second day. Rich aroma of apricot. Unctuous mix of complex flavors that I won't even try to describe. Full, lingering finish, which is equally complex, equally delicious, and has in the mix an unusual taste of sawdust along with more conventional flavors including apricot pit.

An exuberant, persistent, beautiful nose of apricots and peaches is the first impression when encountering this wine. On the palate, it does not reach the heights of elegance and balance of a great Yquem, but is notable for total lack of any harsh notes or significant defect. This is a perfect example of how even an uninspiring year for Yquem can still result in an excellent wine, great enough to leave most other Sauternes as also-rans.

From half-bottle. Extremely complex nose with notes of brown sugar, marmalade, lychee, and honey. The palate matches the nose; quite sweet and certainly enough acidity to boot. The alcohol comes off just slightly hot at the end, but is hardly a distraction.

Acker BYO 2012 (Tribeca Grill, Tribeca, NY): Lots of oak, sweet caramel and butterscotch. Not great balance - too much heat for the fruit. The Semicentennial Birthday "Season"; 9/16/2012-9/18/2012 (San Francisco and the Napa Valley): Although not up to the quality of 2001, this offering (tasted from a 750 cc bottle) is no lightweight. Medium gold at this point, the nose shows a beautiful bouquet of peaches, apricots, honey and toast. The wine is sufficiently full-bodied and unctuous on the palate, with excellent acidity to balance its sweetness. The middle is solid and the finish, not surprisingly, is long and luscious. My impressions were confirmed two days later, when the equivalent of a glass was found in the "leftover" refrigerated bottle. Drink now-12/35.

From a half-bottle. Relatively pale, owing most likely to youth. Not a massively exuberant nose, but more subtle. Aromas of coconut, botrytis spice, yellow stone fruit, confectioner's sugar, and Sharpie marker. On the palate though, this is classic Yquem. Intense and fabulous concentration. However, the depth of flavour seems to be missing, and there is some unpleasant bitterness and heat (from the alcohol, I think). Not as put-together as other vintages, it feels like it is coming apart at the seams. Acidity (of a tart apricot kind) is there if you look for it; this Yquem is balanced, but ungainly. There is absolutely no discernible difference in the wine between the first day it was opened and the next.

All the staples of d'Yquem are there--the golden hue, the lovely scent of apricots, honey, cough syrup intermingled with botrytis rot, the mouth of honey and cytric fruit. But somehow, the balance did not feel quite right, the overall product tasting ever so slightly cloying, and not quite as complex and mult-layered as some d'Yquem I've tasted in the past.

Deep golden color; nose exhibits apricots, acacia honey, orange peel & the wonderful funk of botyrtis. Luscious glycerine sweetness balanced by generous acidity and full bodied bodaciousness. Can't wait to see where it goes and how it pairs with a variety of different foods.
After about the 4th day it became very heady and syrupy. Drank like fortified wine. Found that overall it really didn't pair well with the food I had it with - it demanded all of the attention.

Mega-Slide! (Waterford Wine Co. Tasting Room): Nose was rich and smelled of honey, aged cheese, apricots and pollen. Velvety mouthfeel of apricot nectar and honey. Light nose with orange flower. Upfront honey and sweet, nice acidic bite. Very short finish. Lacks the complexity one expects with d'Yquem and very little hints of botrytis or deeper notes. Enjoyable on the patio lounge at 'M,' but not worth the price or far better alternatives.

Smells like honeyed peaches laced with baking spice.
Tastes like nectar. Apricots, peaches, honey and flowers. Liquid candy. The purity of flavors and mouthfeel amaze me with this wine. A finish that goes forever.

Arthritis Foundation Connoiseurs' Room (Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee): golden with an orange glimmer of sunlight. beautiful orange citrus nose. noted that this is not a great vintage. yet this wine finally cleared the table. so pretty. orange citrus and bright fall leaves. the softest pillow. light coconut in the nose. yes, finally this is it.

Shared with several friends...and thus I am expecting my karmic reward any moment now. Second day, there was a heavenly honey-sweetened mint tea quality floating above apricot fruit. Many dreams were fulfilled tonight.

Mega Slide (Waterford Wines Milwaukee): honied and spicy pollen a la botrytis. golden canary yellow. thought of brown sugar on the nose with light coconut milk. shows wonderful botrytis spice. waffles between white to brown grain toasted rice. white tea and apricot fruit on the nose as well. the palate shows wonderful juvenille purity and such the balance. I find florals to be floating in the background. meringue and toasted meringue.

Mega-Slide! (Waterford Wine Co. Tasting Room): Nose was rich and smelled of honey, aged cheese, apricots and pollen.
Velvety mouthfeel of apricot nectar and honey. Has a flavor that reminds me of ripe peaches that are beginning to reach the overripe, dripping, falling apart, messy hands phase.
The purity of this wine is unbelievable.
Insanely good with Speed Queen Barbeque.

Very thick wine - tempted to cut it with a knife and that's probably the most compelling thing about it. Pure, outstanding grip, apricots and honey, but one dimentional as has been noted.

Compared to 1998, 1999 and 2001, this seems to be the least impressive Yquem. The concentration and everything is more than ok, but the overall complexity is less than in the other vintages mentioned (in a comparative tasting.)

Y2 day in the Librije, Zwolle, Netherlands. (Yquem tasting) (De Librije, Zwolle, Netherlands.): Dark yellow. Honey. Very thick; a lot of glycerine. A lot of apricots and oranges. A charming wine which lacks a little in complexity compared to the other wines we tasted.

Slightly oxidized (served by the glass) nose with orange and pineapple marmalade and chewy cotton candy notes. Full and intense in the mouth with sweet honeyed fruits and good length and acidity. Great concentration. Not a great d'yquem but very good. ***+
