Sunday afternoon (Chicago, IL): Impressive freshness for a wine of this age. Almost a greenish tinge to it, with only a modest amount of sweetness and just a little bit of furry chenin quality.

Bright gold. Heavenly nose. Very fresh - more sweet grapes than anything approaching a raisiny note. A touch of fresh ginger and lemon grass. Only a mere hint of botrytis. Very fresh attack. Unbelievably fresh for a 30 year old wine. Hugely elegant. I've written down "dominated by balance" which is a bit weird, but I think I know what I mean! It doesn't even feel especially sweet, though there's a touch of barley sugar and a touch of florality.

One of those rare wines that made me step back a step or two when I tasted it. Exceptional and full of life. Though I wasn't really expecting a moelleux, its acid, freshness and energy made it very versatile at table. I only have one more bottle I think. Comforting (sort of) to know it will outlive me.

Day two. Beautiful color. Like a thick apple juice. Smells quite lovely; honeysuckle, lemon curd, and quite a lot of weight is felt. Vibrant, fresh and round. Viscous with notes of honeycomb, with integrated acidity all throughout that's balanced perfectly with the sweetness, so it doesn't feel that sweet. I said 10 years ago it was a bit light, but it no longer is light at all; it has nice weight and complexity. I honestly was originally worried this was going over the hill a decade ago, but no, it has only improved. As per typical, due to the sugars this should still be drinking in another 30 years. I told myself... don't drink another for 10 years, as I only have two more... so have the next two at 40 years of age, and 50 years of age.

Opened at the end of the night and while enjoyable, it wasn't as complex as the ZD or the older rieslings, and so seemed underwhelming. It's a nice bottle, just not complex and a bit overly sweet for the acidity. B

January birthday craziness (Chicago, IL): A leaner example of a Moeulleux. This is but moderately sweet, with a bit of yellow fruit showing. There's a surprisingly heavy amount of acid on this, but the alcohol feels a bit hot on this bottle. Despite that, the palate is still quite crisp and fresh.

Light gold in color with generous legs. Nose was very restrained with notes of honeysuckle and something else I couldn't identify. Hints of lemon and orange blossom. Flavor was like liquid honey with hints of lemon curd. Full bodied with a sort of waxy/oily texture that coated the palate. Fairly sweet without being cloying. Paired with sushi and it did best with a spicy tuna roll and the fattier pieces, like toro. As other people noted, the cork was a disaster, falling apart as we extracted it.

I'm gradually learning not to be too scared of old corks, but this one was jet black with scary mildew on top. No matter. The wine showed just great, with all the hoped-for floral, honeyed, green apple and woolly aromas. The palate is medium-sweet with piercing linear acidity. Still has plenty of life left in it. Yum.

The last of my dozen bottles and to my mind the most disappointing. Lacking in focus and weight, it was medium sweet with a nice touch of botrytis on the finish - so, nice but just lacking that something!

Intense aromas of poached pear and apple with a clear honeyed, botrytis character. Same apple and pear flavors on the palate with modest spice. Rich and honeyed flavors and I liked that it was slightly less sweet than I expected.

Golden yellow colour. Nose was shy, but definately Chenin, honey, pears and mushrooms. Very young for its age but not showing much. Body was medium, had high acidity but flavour concentration was not high enough. Had the finesse and texture of a great wine but was not showing very much, like a fallen from grace aristoctat, can sense its provenance but for sure has known better times... Yet in the case of the wine I do not mean that it was old or that it won't get better, just that altough it showed breed it was not up to it.

On day one I just noted that this was much lighter in flavor and complexity than the previous bottle. On day two, I get quite a bit of pine aromas, some wood stain, cooked pineapple, and perhaps some tree bark. Viscous in the mouth with some initial bright white fruit components, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, pine... Not sticky or overly sweet at all, but very soft and mild. The finish is initially empty, but then begins to blossom a bit as it lingers, expressing some floral and candied wax components. Very light over all... same score as yesterday.
