Moderately translucent, nose of bright red cherry with hints of red florals. Elegant light to medium body with bing cherry, soft eucalyptus, some floral elements emerged more towards the end of the bottle. Tannins have medium to light coarseness like chalk, medium plus acidity.
This reminded me of some alto Piedmonts that I’ve really enjoyed like Vallana spanna.

The wine took about 45 minutes to release after decant… really worth it. Typical cherry and begonias on the nose but also a bit of dark chocolate and linger. On the palate it reveals notes of bright red fruit notes like lingonberry and cranberry. There is also lingering pleasant dryness of cedar. Tannins are still kicking but drink within the next couple of years of optimal drinking.

Next to the 2012. Light red colour. Elegant, balanced- red fruited in profile with tar and only light tannins on finish - honestly a bit simple fro the 2013 vintage at this cru address . Nice to drink but probably not at the same level of Monprivato of old (eg 2008 vintage and before). I went backwards and forwards in terms of what I favoured between this and the 2012 so will score them equal. Don't get me wrong this is a nice wine to drink - just terrible QPR.

Have very low expectations after all the bad press, both here and Vinous.
However I thought excellent and good value at £120 and not far short of the 2010. Yes light in colour but this is Monprivato, good length and typical strawberry/red fruits with a mineral edge.
I’m also stocking up on 2014 and hoping for a similar result to 1999/2005.

Given the lack of quality I recently experienced here I had to open my other and last bottle of this wine. Just to see if it was the bottle or the production this vintage given other reviews.
While I scored 92 it might have deserved more had we let it decant for an hour or more. Very tight at first and within an hour started to open nicely but absolutely needs a couple, if not several hours to decant. By the end of the meal it was a quintessential Barolo touching all those flavor profiles of a more old world Barolo trying to be a bridge between old world and new world Barolo. Definitely not the same rustic old world of aged Mascarello from older vintages.

The ‘13 Monprivato is one of the worst young Barolo I have tasted, price aside. Simply put, the ‘13 has no purpose - it lacks the vibrancy of a good Langhe Nebbiolo or the depth of a good Barolo. The fruit is diluted and muted, the texture is very light bodied and yet still shows some harsh drying tannin. The wine got worse with air and fell apart in the glass, suggesting it’s unlikely to improve with air. No sign of any flaw in the bottle.
On the nose, I found slightly muted aromatics of dried light strawberry fruit, some VA, dried flowers and tobacco. On the palate, it was light and diluted yet showed a normal amount of youthful Nebbiolo tannin, which stuck out more given the lack of any depth in the flavor profile.
The ‘13 was a major disappointment compared to the ‘15 which I tasted a few months ago, and was a clear success for that weaker vintage.
Quite light in colour and starts off showing some advanced nuttiness with a bit of chocolate. It is very earthy and has some mushroom notes too. With air the wine improves and it has some more ethereal florals that you expect from Monprivato. It has vinous sweetness and is very earthy on the finish. It is a decent wine but not a great Monprivato.

At Operakällaren. Closed wine. Reveals some typicity, the perfume is elegant but boy is this tight. Taste has no oaky Barolo Boys kind of behaviour - it is traditional, slighly austere, elegant and would most likely benefit from cellaring.

Aromas of Port, maple syrup, iodine, milk chocolate, leather, red and dark cherry. Gorgeous nose. This is slammed tight on the palate and truly a waste to open. Needs at least another 10 years. That said, you can feel the potential in the background. There’s a wonderful purity and transparency to this. A really thought-provoking wine where the lack of polish is a positive. Beautiful strong tannin and balanced acidity. This could easily be confused for Burgundy.

Pop & pour. Candied raspberries, over cherries and liquorice, with a touch of autumn leaves. Some lightly more sour cherries come through on the palate. Juicy, no hard edges. Tannins in check, fine texture, nerve and balance. Lovely finish. Burgundian/pinot noir feel to it all. Transparent. One of the better Monprivato I have tasted young. 92-93p now, with upside.

Lunch with Lorenzo at Osteria Veglio (La Morra, Piemonte): Popped and poured. Cherry red colour with amber highlights. A beautiful bouquet of bright red cherries, raspberries and red plums, a compote of red berries. Also, a touch dried herbs and nascent rose florals. On palate, slowing opening in the glass. Ripe and rich but elegant and very well balanced. Morello cherries and other red fruit with some herbs and some austere minerality. It paired beautifully with my goat dish. Sweet seeming tannins. Racy acidity and great precision. Mid weight at most and still tightly coiled. Very long. A brilliant wine. Delicious now but it'll need 5-10+ more years before it's at anything like its best, I would think.

A small peek into 2013 Barolos (Osteria Langhe): Nose: From the get go, this was all about harmony. It was a nose (and wine) that can deceive to where one thinks that there is only so much to give, and then it changes it all around with subtlety. This had a very red fruited take of rose petals, strawberries, red cherries, fresh picked red berries, crushed rocks, red fruits, leather, earth, and a bit of fresh herbs.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The tannins were sneaky, but very much there with the acidity showing youthful sharpness. The feel was regal and refined with rose petals, strawberries, red cherries, fresh picked berries, crushed rocks, and earth tones.
Overall: This had seen over a day's worth of air from what I was told. Even then, it seemed to hold back a bit. Still, this is a long haul Monprivato that will almost certainly show much better with time so that the nuances can fully emerge.

Here I found intense floral perfumes, with dusty dried roses up front, followed by notes of ripe strawberry, bright cherry and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, I found a lifted expression, showing feminine textures with pure ripe strawberry, a light dusting of sweet spices and inner floral tones, remaining remarkably fresh and pure throughout, with hints of acid and tannin. The finish was shorter than expected with light strawberry and light, fine grain tannin.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 2/15/2018-2/17/2018 (Chicago, IL): #10157. This is a really restrained and subdued bottle of Barolo, which doesn't show any of the flash from other 2013 Barolos I've had. It's a very muted wine, with wisps of red fruit. Lots of acidity and structure right now without too much flavour, but the greatness here is clearly visible. It's just far in the distance. I had a glass of this left over and drank it the next evening. My goodness has this changed. Whereas yesterday I thought it was dumb and mute, this has transformed from the ugly duckling into a full-fledged swan. The flowers, the red fruit, the elegance, the beauty, they're all there in spades. A little heady from the ripeness but this holds its alcohol well. I ticked up the score two notches based on this incredible change.

Very pale ruby, looks more lightly extracted like a pale Burgundy; this took longer to open up than the Perno, its shyness is common in my experience with this bottling but this vintage seems quite extroverted once revealed, a coolness seems to inherent with soft florals, soft strawberry and light cherry, a bit 1-D for the first hour this slowly became more lush and generous as the night went on, a massive savory mid shows satiny tannins and strawberry liqueur, oozing with sex appeal this is a Burgundy drinker’s delight, the laser focus and bright acid are like a Siren encouraging you to drink up but your brain says “wait- this is Monprivato idiot”, this did put on weight and soft tannic push late; subtle nuance is usually my impression of young Monprivato but this is quite prodigious, not sure if I am catching it during its 1st drinking window or whether this is the character from the vintage- either way the elegance freshness extract and fruit say this is one that will show balance for a long time and should cruise effortlessly in the cellar; 13.5%.
