Decanted 1 hour, with Comte cheese. As reported in recent notes this wine has really blossomed. Classic Bordeaux notes of damp earth and blackcurrants on the nose. Fully integrated tannins, a little freshening acidity and no noticable oak. No overblown 2003ness. Extremely enjoyable.

Possibly my last bottle of this. Pop and pour. Mature black raspberry colour with a very dark slightly garnet rim. Very dark and deep in the glass. Initial subdued nose that needs air and then reveals layers of dark plum, ripe black fig, worn saddle leather, camphor, black tea, tar and lots of graphite, even a touch of black licorice as well. Full bodied and a mouthful of black fruit extract. Fills your entire mouth from front to back with perfectly ripe and lush fruit. Wow! Super smooth. The tannins have completely melted away. Tongue coating black fruits all over the place. Lush and sensuous! Not dried out or raisined at all. Powerful yet supple. This is drinking perfectly right now and man is it sexy! So good! Gulpable. Call me crazy but I'm going with a 95 on this.

Weekly tasting group #199; New years tasting with some young and mature wines (@ My place): Beautiful and classical bouquet with cassis and other dark forest fruits and a pleasant dose of beautiful oak. On the palate cassis and ripe dark forest fruits, some herbs and spices and vanilla, even some graphite, but also good acidity and tannin. Showing some maturity, but in fact by far not tired yet. Again, nice very drinkable Bordeaux - nothing more. But here is what I am learning about 2003's. Opened this 4 days ago, had a glass maybe, put the cork back in and put it in the refrigerator. Tonight once again like the past two nights, another glass, bottle is down to maybe 1/3 - 1/4, the wine is still very drinkable Bordeaux. Similarly - Pagodes de Cos, Faugeres, and others.

UGC Montreal (Arsenal); 1/26/2013-1/27/2013: Wow has this wine developed in a year since my last note. Medium Garnet, full bodied. Nose of black cherries, strawberry, and cedar. Taste of black fruit, vanilla, and caramel but it's not too sweet. Beautifully balanced wine. I can't wait to try my last bottle in a few years to see how this wine further develops and the tannins soften more. Medium finish.

Nice wine. Dark colored. Thick red/black fruits, kirsch and coconut tones in the nose. Thick over-ripe fruits, vanilla and tannins on the palate. Modern styled wine, initially wasn't even sure if it's Bordeaux (partly related to hot 2003 I suppose). Very different from the original classic style of Tour Carnet.

Impossible to rate, really. In some odd way that one is a great success and on the other not my style at all. Starts out extremely ripe, full-bodied, sweet and lush. Flabby and oaky as well. Nose is full of creme de cassis, warm asphalt, coffee and roasted meat. Went quite well with a ribeye steak and sauce bearnaise. On day two, it is more calm and controlled but still shows ripeness and warm. This is a modern left banker alright, and not my kind of wine at all.

Very powerful and expressive nose upon opening with some herbal and meaty notes. Palate is rather modern, or Californian, with lots of tannins that are somewhat rough and astringent. Not the most elegant Bordeaux. The concentration is good, and the vintage is very evident. Very good, but not outstanding. 2003 was a tough year.

I bought a six-pack last week as an aged bordeaux offering and am not pleased that I was charged $35. Pop & pour might be 'my bad.' I'll try at least 2 hour decant next time. Pleasant enough, but I expected more than a pedestrian everyday drinker. Fruit forward, drink now...no reason to hold.

Sexy! Rolland on the left bank in a hot year. Delicious fruit, noble wood, more weight than normal, polished but not slick and with the freshness and minerality to still be a true claret. Lovely wine. I love it. Drink now - 2016.

Lovely nose of violets, cassis, cedar spice and tobacco leaf. Palate with ripe red fruits, decent acidity, and dusty tannins leading into a lengthy finish of chocolate and coffee notes, with a little moist forest floor/mushroom and cedar. Just a little hollow on the mid palate, but otherwise quite good. Better than expected. Great expression of bdx with a slightly modern flair.

Decanted 4hrs. Fruit forward in a fairly extracted style. Definite vanilla notes in the finish. Became slightly more integrated the 2nd day (stored in a 375ml bottle, refridgerated, overnight). Definite New World overtones, but with Bordeaux structure. No deterioration over the 24hrs, so may be some ageing potential to this 2003?

Audouzed 2hrs,not decanted. With roast top rump, lamb chops & yorkshire pudding. 1st of a case & opened with a Ch. d'Aurilhac '03 for comparison. Instantly recognisable as a Left Bank Bordeaux, which is a result for a 2003, this was not bad. Slightly muted both on the nose & in the mouth. Medium bodied (nothing wrong with that), low acid profile, with a light tannic spine. Good work-a-day inoffensive Bordeaux in a low-key way.

The wine drinks almost like California Cabernet, not that anything wrong with that. A bit too oaky for my taste, still quite tannic with classic Bordeaux flavors/aromas of blackberries, cassis, tobacco and Oak. I don't think that this wine will improve with further aging by much. Drink now with decant or hold for a few more years.

Had no decanter at the time of drinking(on vacation at a lake house). Never the less this wine was fantastic. I would have given it 2-3 hours in a decanter to open up further, but the aromas and flavors were fantastic. I would give a higher rating, perhaps, had it been decanted. Great wine for the price.

uncorked for 4 hours, dark red, aroma of black fruit, very structured and balance, dry tanning, moderate finish, don't think it will improve much with more aging, overall a well made claret, not massive from a hot 2003, not much complexity either.

when first opened was very tannic, green, and had little or no attack at all, at this point the wine needs to breathe, a few hours brings out nice aromas of liquorish, berry and wood, the mid-palate has some decent raspberry and green pepper, with a nice finish of oak and dried cherry, good with meat sauce and pasta

Given a three hour decant, this was perhaps a little muted to start. Colour relatively deep and a nose that was still very Bordeaux for me, even if modern in style. Notes of cassis and pencil shavings, that were clean but not overpowering. Certainly a warmer style of Bordeaux in the mouth, with it's an up front fruitiness, but one was never sweet, jammy or raisiny - despite being of relatively low acidity. The finish retained a classic dryness. I rather enjoyed this, slightly to my surprise. Great value too.

Decant: minimal sediment ~ 30 min before meal Nose: loads of ripe fruit, dark plums, blueberries, blackberries, and undertones of meat Taste: strawberries and cream, minimal oak, ripre fruit and spice, clove and a hint of a pepper, this wine was layered with beautiful fruit and really outstanding for us tonight. bordeaux tasting (Binny's Highland Park): nose: real good core of red fruit permeating throughout the nose with some red currants, red licorice, chalk, and pencil shaving notes. Very typical 03 nose that is very enjoyable
taste: big and tannic, but with good fruit and flavors on top with anise, red fruit, red currants, chalk, and black currants too
overall: this is a great buy at ~$25. Great left bank bordeaux at the price range and one that is good for mid term aging. Real good core of fruit with a good upfront attack and finish

Decanted for 90 minutes. Very interesting Bordeaux. In true Bernard Marguez fashion, this wine was a dead ringer for a Cali meritage or cab based red. Dark crimson color. Definite oak on the nose along with some ripe, dark red fruits. On the palate, creamy vanilla oak flavors along with baking spices and black cherries. Smooth mouthfeel and finish. By far more new world than old. I really enjoyed this bottle and would rebuy but know what you are getting into with this wine.

Popped and poured. Dark and intense ruby (almost purple) color. A nose of oak, cherries and nail polish followed by a medium-bodied wine with ripe red and black berry fruit, creamy oak and just a hint of leather. The wine coats the mouth beautifully and finishes with big, but sweet, tannin. Bernard Magrez has been both criticized and praised for his somewhat New World style. I give Margrez credit for attempting to bridge the gap between Bordeaux and California, but to me this wine falls a little short because, in the end, it is neither. A good party wine that will certainly please all but the toughest crowds. This wine may merit a higher score in the future if it develops some complexity to go along with the big fruit, alcohol and oak.

not decanted. dark purple with bouquet of black currants, grapes, chocolate, and a dollop of new oak. Fruit forward, with decent mid-palate and a creamy grapey finish. Tannins are hardly noticeable. easy drinking, not terribly exciting or introspective for a left bank, let alone, a LTC. very Californiaesqe, (also, wine gets very flabby if too warm) not close in quality to the 2000 or 2001, which I rate in the low to mid 90's if memory serves.

I'm reading the other public notes and wondering if I'm drinking the same wine. When I opened this, it was so dominated by the scent of crushed rock, that was all you got. After about an hour, that blew off some and then you got a pretty standard Bordeaux bouquet and flavor, but nothing that made the wine exceptional. I didn't think the wine was particularly dark, opaque, or full-bodied as some people have mentioned. I've been drinking Aussie's and so maybe with those as comparison, I don't think any Bordeaux is really going to seem "dark, opaque, or full bodied". In my opinion, it was medium bodied, and I do agree with the one poster that said this was leaning a little towards the green side. I definitely wouldn't use the term "ripe" with this wine. I still have half the bottle left and I'll probably try it again tonight to see how it has changed. Hopefully for the better.

la tour carnet is now producing quite a refined product. a true '03, this is dark, concentrated and tannic. classic bordeaux leather and dark fruit nose. plenty of glycerin makes for a big, smooth mouthfeel. some sweet vanilla oak but not too much. medium-long finish. well-balanced and even better than the 2000 vintage which i enjoyed very much.

I really don't have a frame of reference for young Bordeaux. I bought this one because of RP's note and because I saw it in the hypermarche for €15. All I can say is that I was not disappointed. It's full bodied, quite concentrated, and pleasurable - the term "hedonistic" is not out of place. The finish is meaty and the tannins, while strong, are not hard. Approachable now, but it will surely improve over the next few years as the tannin integrates. vg+

Roasted notes at first, but blew away in 15- 20 minutes. Splash decanted. Dark ruby. Nose a bit closed, opened more with time. Like all the 2003s I've tasted (nor many), can be drunk now with pleasure. I bought a lot of other 2003's as futures, so probably won't buy more of this. But I was encouged about the vintage and this property.

This bottle not quite up to par with previous a few months ago and did not get the impression that this will go much further. Start drinking now if you have some in your cellar and enjoy.

Really nice drinking red fruit Bordeaux with maybe a bit of wood vanilla. Has length but the fruit sort of doesn't hold up at the end. At the price, however, just fine.

2003 Château La Tour Carnet (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc) Grand cru classe (forth growth)
This chateau is owned by Bernard Magrez, who tends to make more of international style wines.
I decided to open this bottle after I read this article by Jancis Robinson, who tells us to drink 2003 bordeaux now (Parker tells the exact opposite):
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/97e028d0-9361-11de-b146-00144feabdc0.html

Great value too.

bordeaux tasting (Binny's Highland Park): nose: real good core of red fruit permeating throughout the nose with some red currants, red licorice, chalk, and pencil shaving notes.

Approachable now, but it will surely improve over the next few years as the tannin integrates. vg+
