Guessed the winery but no idea of the site. After that we had LT and CC 16. In that comparison it was the "weakest" and less concentrated wine but still fine and multi layered. In a nice first drinking window. 95

  • Stem, floral aromatics. Hugely dimensioned wine. Balance, sweetness, persistence, everything basically. (1838/15657)

  • Blind, none at the table guessed DRC, the floral nose only emerged after at least 30 minutes in glass. Glorious nose with excellent texture once open up a bit

  • Caution - do not open today! DRC 16s are tough work at this moment in my experience. It seems that the high skin to juice ratio of the vintage (which in general is clearly a vintage de garde) and wholebunch of the Domaine make them quite impenetrable at this juncture. I had a similar experience with 2 bottles of Tache 2016 last year where we found it difficult to finish the bottle. Initially here too it was side by side a DRC GE 17 a wine that was almost painful to bring to nose and mouth for the next sniff and sip. The 17 was just so open and giving. The RSV 16 on the nose almost reminded me of a Rayas staple wine on the nose (just not what I expect from RSV). Unlike Tache last year though it opened up a bit with air and an hour in it mellowed to become more mineral and classic black fruited. It's no doubt a wine to hold onto for 10-20 years minimum and it should be grand. For today's gratification I would almost say it's as low a score as 90-92 (maybe you see that differently if only poured a glass but a bottle between two was hard work) and on promise/potential I see this at 97/98 so taking a mid-point. WAIT!

  • Stunning. The impression is seriously intense on the nose and palate, with deep dark fruit and a million layers of flavor. But despite the depth and breadth, and the obvious grandeur, this is really very elegant and nothing feels out of place. Obviously an infant with a long life ahead, but the structure is so fine that it's really quite lovely even today. DRC really nailed '16. This bested the '02 and '05 DRC RSVs opened alongside it. My score may be conservative.

  • Floral aromatics, ever so fine. Incredibly pure, delineated and transparent palate that just goes on and on with sweetness to boot. Love this vintage for DRC. (1022/15657)

  • SLDS August 2020 - Maybe the world is ending tasting: Rich, deeply coloured. Redcurrant, five spice, cola, ash and cherry. Taking on another dimension with air and just lifting out of the glass more and more with time. Savoury, spicy, great depth and balance. Powerful but also delicate. Superb.

  • From shipment that was delayed during shipping with label completely worn off. Surprisingly held together and floral aromatics coaxed out after 2 hours. Subtle, delineated palate. Wow.

  • Part of a 2016 DRC tasting, a vintage that impressed with how approachable it already was, purity, elegance and versatility. For me, the La Tâche scored best, followed by Richebourg and Romanée-Conti – although the latter may well surpass the La Tâche in the long run. Corton came in last. Montrachet, Échezeaux and Grands-Échezeaux were not produced commercially that year and older vintages offered instead.

Ripe cherry fruit, dense and intense. Rocky minerality but also a deep, dark earthiness waving from the distance. Herbaceous nuances keep popping up. Rather full body with vibrant acidity and firm tannins harmoniously woven into the fabric.

  • DRC 2016 – what survived the frost: Intro: Another great vintage. At this early stage I slightly prefer the 2016s over the 2015s at the same point last year as the former show a bit more open and complex (due to a less dominant fruit core). Out of the 5 reds, the Richebourg is my #1 with its early charms and seductiveness. The La Tache is the most complex and shows a tad more open than the Romanee Conti, which is so dense and packed that it very likely will reach higher highs than all other wines. The RSV also boasts the fantastic structure and finesse without the incredible depth of the big 3.

TN: Fresh red berries, sweet strawberries, sour cherries, fresh and sweet cherries, herbs, wet stone. Intense, complex and precise but not at the same insane level as the big three. Same is true for the length. Impeccable structural frame with ultra-fine tannins and a perfect, well-integrated acidity. Also here, great structure but not as fine and polished as the big three, yet still on an incredibly high level. All in all a great wine which will age gracefully and should reach the elusive 97+ points category once mature.

  • Dégustation Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Verticale 2016, avec Déjeuner (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Sit-down tasting with Aubert of the 2016 lineup. More black vs red fruit on both nose and palate with alluring perfume. Expanding from middle through finish with tannins starting to assert themselves as well. Lots of energy on very long finish that comes across as nearly perfectly balanced already. There is a bit of protruding new oak right now that bothered some people, but I expect that will easily integrate years before I would even contemplate opening a bottle. 95-96 point potential. Most preferred Richebourg today, but I respectfully disagreed.

  • Bright red berries. Some young stemmyness. Good structure and balance. Surprisingly open for such a young wine - expect this to shut down at some point. Today its very good. Greatness in the making. This will get better.

  • Winos' excellent adventure in France; 6/22/2017-6/27/2017 (All over France): Expressive nose displaying bright red fruits, raspberry, blackberry, rose, sap, a hint of Vosns spice and earth. Excellent concentration, nicely layered bright red fruit, round, warm, silky, perfect amount of acidity, good mineral presence and a long finish. Perhaps the most energetic wine of the 16 DRC line up but the palate is not as sensual as the Richebourg, La Tache or RC.
