  • Transparent fruity jammy balanced by spiciness. Excellent.

  • 2hr decant. Big dark fruits on the initial nose, blackberry, cassias and black currant. Some floral, violet as well. This has amazing balance. I’d give it 99 just on that alone. Delicate and soft like a velvet blanket. Palate was dark fruit, red fruit, mild cherry cola. Slowly turned smoky and woodsy like a cedar cigar box. It felt like silks sheets for your mouth. Wifey felt 98 was right but I felt complexity could have been there more. Wasn’t super lengthy either. 97

  • It’s time for another New Year’s eve review. This year we had a slate of heavy hitters – cabs, cab blends and even a merlot based right bank – of vintages ranging from 2009 to 2016. The only common feature was that all of the wines had received at least two 100 point scores from some reputable critic and in some cases three or four (to be fair, we could only find one 100 point score for the Wraith, but one of our party swore they had seen another 100 point review so we let it in). I am posting the same review for all 5 wines but scoring each wine separately. And to be frank, these were all stunning wines – to think that our little group of hodunk wine sippers could really distinguish among greatness like this would be a bit arrogant – this is just for fun and none of us really know what we are doing, which is probably evident based on the quality of this review. With all of those caveats, here we go. Oh, for those who care about things like this, all wines were decanted 2 hours in advance and served at about 60 degrees F in zalto crystal.
    1. Colgin IX Estate (2016) – 100pts - this was the wine of the night by a 3-1 vote. It was drinking perfectly, super well-balanced with the fruit not too strong and an incredible finish. Now we also drank it after the other 4 were gone. Could that have something to do with it? Hmm, regardless, this wine was gorgeous and we all truly enjoyed the experience of perfection in a glass.
    2. Hundred Acre Wraith (2013) – 100pts – one of the very best napa cabs we have ever had. It was really tossing a coin between this and the Colgin. This wine was so well-structured yet smooth, smooth, smooth. And layer upon layer of flavors and textures. Cherry fruits, fine tannins,, super complex – this one has it all. What an achievement (if you can’t tell by now, I was the one who chose this over the Colgin for wine of the night).
    3. Cheval Blanc (2009) – 99pts – the only merlot based wine of the night, the group was a little split on whether this or the PC should be #3. More dark berry than red with silky smooth tannins and a very complex long lasting finish with the cab franc giving it a hint of spice – this wine is drinking really well right now – not too early to drink but you can tell it has a lot of future potential as well. Wonderful, wonderful wine.
    4. Pontet-Canet (2009) – 99pts – really a tie for third with the CB. What else can be said about this fantastic wine that has not already been stated? So supple, precise and pure. This wine truly punches above its weight and is neck and neck with wines costing 2-4x more than it. Its so sophisticated but also so approachable always making it a crowd favorite. Drinking well right now so no reason to wait if you have a bottle.
    5. Kapcsandy Grand Vin (2016) – 97pts – probably by itself this would have been 99 pts, but when having to compete against the above it was just a tiny bit lacking. It probably could use another 2-3 years, and perhaps the 2013 would have been a fairer pick for this competition but we drank our last one a year ago. With that said, this is still a stupendous wine we all truly loved and had perhaps the best nose of the night with a ton of complexity and spice.
    Until next NYE! Cheers!

  • 1 hour decant, deep purple in color. Nose is black fruit, a briny green olive element, something like Coca Cola. Palate is more red fruit, same Coca Cola aspect, spice. Slightly tannic/drying. For the brand and vintage, I was expecting more, but a well-made pleasantly robust wine.

  • Wine of the night. This is what I've come to expect from Hundred Acre. Wonderful fruit. Smooth as silk. Great finish. Fun to serve to our friends at my wife's 52nd birthday party at the Edison House wine room.

  • Pop and pour. At this stage in its life this wine is evolving magically in the mouth and with air. Perhaps the best way to enjoy this today is to pop and pour a couple ounces for that amazing, perfect first taste, then pour into the decanter to help the evolution along. For us it was just going into a confused phase as we finished it over 90 minutes or so without a decant. A fabulous wine and winery.

  • Pnp, but sould have decanted for 1-2 hours. Red and black fruits. Blueberry and nicely integrated tannins. Very pleasant bottle it's this time and with additional aging will gain more character. Next bottle will open in 3 years.

  • A wonderful complete wine that is restrained Napa near its best. Plenty of dark red fruit, beautiful mid palette and great finish. This wine has improved markedly since my last bottle 3+ years ago. Easy 96 and was gaining as we finished it. Thanks Jim A for bringing! HMC

  • Brought to our tasting by James and enjoyed over 3+ hours. Immediate elegant nose of sweet tobacco, perfumed cedar and red fruit. 94 at the pnp. Throughout the evening this gains weight and balance and all elements open up further becoming more intense yet still qualifying this as a 'feminine' wine. Easy 98 by the end of the bottle and who knows? It may have moved even further north from there if there was any left and more time. I really toyed with giving this a 99. Again wish we had the ability to rate with a decimal like 98.5.......Beautiful wine James, ty for sharing.

  • I'm giving this my first 100 pt rating because I haven't had a better wine. 100% Cabernet. Perfect depth but matched with elegance, perfect balance, no hard edges, long finish all on its own. No food to pair with it. Just beautiful enjoyment from 45 minutes decant to 5 hours later.

  • Smooth cigar box and vanilla aromas. Gentle dark fruit at first taste with an elegant introduction to well structured mild tannins. Long, enjoyable finish. Near perfect.

  • See Quiet Lion and Lord’s tasting notes below; I’m aligned with those. Particularly to try it PnP. It got better in the glass but the evolution over the initial hour or so shouldn’t be missed. Impressive concentration and depth for such a weightless silky sip.

  • Near perfect wine with just 8 years of age. Should last a long time but no need to wait on this one.

  • Fabulous wine!

  • Pop and pour. I think it's the stunning first sip that makes people want to give these wines perfect scores. The nose is generous, beautiful fresh fruit and flowers. On the palate, liquid silk, viscous, mouth-filling, balanced, perfect. It's the flavor profile you'd expect from a cult Cab, lots of cassis, light minerality, accessible tannins, sweet acid, and the signature Hundred Acre olive oil. I do recommend pop and pour at this point as after a couple hours it began to go into a confused stage with chewier tannins. It probably would have emerged, but why miss that initial perfection?

  • Popped and poured through aerator into decanter. Quite open and expressive after a few minutes with red fruit, chocolate, mint and a characteristic HA finish of fig that ranged from short to medium. Nose was most open at the start. Third and last bottle. Compared to the Few and Far Between the Wraith seems to be based less on power and more on elegance, but this bottle still comes across young. 95 with upside potential.

  • Open from first pop, with a beautiful nose of black cherry, dried herb, milk chocolate, and cedar. Bright acidity, silky texture with less weight than you'd think, carrying dark fruit and chocolate flavors of impressive concentration and length. Hundred Acre's 2013 Wraith is excellent.

  • Medium garnet coloring with a intoxicating noise of dark fruit. Elegant in profile with a long beautiful finish. Not heavy in concentration which is refreshing considering the vintage and youth. I really like this style but it's a heavy price point considering options that you could find for a two for one ratio. I look forward to revisiting another bottle in 3 years and see how it's develops. I have no doubt this will garner a few more points in time.

  • Enjoyed with Harrison and Todd at Mastro’s Crystal Cove. Amazing dynamic nose of dark berry liquor, formaldehyde, forest floor; ethereal elevation on the palate with huge long finish.

  • Opened quickly, moving from a flat line of fruit to oak, fig and olive. Excellent expression of HA.

  • Compared to Kayli Morgan & Ark, far more tannic and darker fruit. Needs time desperately.

    Amazing wines, ridiculous prices

  • Tasted with my pal Gerry and my wife. Open and decanted for a little over 2 hours. Wine slightly acidic on entry but clean and elegant. Decent weight but not heavy. Fruit present but not in the forefront and I can't even remember its character other than I would say more red than blue or black. Finish medium.

My wife and I liked the wine but Gerry was disappointed. Definitely not a wine for the fruit forward only crowd. Gerry and I both preferred the B cellars Missouri Hopper we had the day before but I think that they are just dissimilar styles and this is a style I could appreciate more than Gerry. Improved notably as in got air. A 93 for me and perhaps a bit higher with a few more hours of air.

  • 40m on the lees, not racked. Like a dry-aged steak. Took them 10 years to get this barrel regiment under control. Made since 2003 as an experiment, this 2013 is the first commercial release. Much more generous palate than the 2015 single vineyard wines that we just had. Chewy, chewy, chewy. More palate, more extraction. Blackberry and graham cracker aromas. 15.5ABV across the board on these three wines.

Chef Joho talking about not having Cab with Steak, because it’s rich w/ rich. He’ll go Burg. Food for Thought. Big Cabs with a simple pasta that’s the way he’ll have a second glass.

  • PDQ95+
Huge and exactly what you expect. I'll wait a few years to open more. That said, already a delicious opulent wine.

  • 40 months in barrel on the lees. More red fruited aromas again. Red and black fruit aromas. Lots of chewy, fine-grained tannin. You can feel all that time in barrel.

  • Wraith is absolute perfection. A complex cascade of flavors that explode like fireworks over Hong Kong Habour. I’ve been a fan of Hundred Acre and have had many bottles, but this takes it to a new level.

  • This was fantastic! I bought two 3 packs after trying. This will last 25+ years and I am hoping I can drink some from others so I don’t have to open any of mine!! Big fantastic example of a Napa red. If you like that style you will love this.

  • Tasted at Wally's Napa / Sonoma All-Stars 2018 event. This by far had the longest line of people waiting as soon as the doors opened. As my friend and I were waiting for our tasting pour, we were observing other people as they were tasting this one. What was interesting was that nobody, and I mean NOBODY reacted positively to this wine. What I mean is that nobody said, "Wow this is good," or even a "Not bad." Everyone tasted, talked, and walked away as if nothing happened.

So it was our turn and we got a pour. I swirled it around, sniffed it, typical Napa Cab nose. Tasted it and thought... 500 bones for this? You must be out of your Hoochi Koochi mind.

Was it a bad wine? Absolutely not. But what stood out for both of us was that the finish was abrupt and boring. People might think maybe it was a bad bottle. But we saw 6+ bottles of this opened that night and NOT ONE PERSON talked good about it. And plus, I tried another Hundred Acre about a year ago at a tasting and it had this same abrupt finish and simplistic profile.

People might say it's because it needs more time. I think that sometimes wines come off as too strong and too tight so it needs time to open up. However, this wasn't the case. You guys can risk $500 on this one. I think I will pass. Peace.

  • Not a tasting note, but very excited to get my shipment in today!

Has anyone out there in CT world had this? Barrel tasted? Heard anything?

All I know is that this is the first vintage where Jayson felt a blend of the vineyards were up to snuff. Not sure the mix between Ark, Kayli, and Few and Far. Info is lacking...

I'd love to crack one of these but probably wont for at least 5 years :(
