2015 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

  • Drank this over 3 days. Day 1 was straight pop-and-pour about 2-3 glasses, cork back in and left on the counter. Day 2 was just pouring one small glass and corking it again and back on the counter. Day 3 was drinking the last 2-3 glasses.

On Day 1 the wine was extremely rough, rustic and powerful. Very grippy and, for my personal taste, unpleasant tannins that really attacked the gums. Very, very dark fruits, dirt, tar, leather, smoke and black pepper.

On Day 2 it felt like the tannins had resolved a bit and it had given way to a bit more elegant fruit, and the dark cherry, strawberry, blackberry and chokeberry started showing. But overall the same notes and feeling as Day 1 was still very much there.

Day 3 resembled Day 2 quite a bit. Didn't seem like the tannins had resolved any more and it was still a very masculine, rustic and powerful Barolo.

For me this definitely needs many more years in the cellar.

  • Same bottle tasted in March and consistent with that experience. Not a pretty Barolo. Rather, rustic, substantive, and gripping. Recommend holding for several years. Correct in all regards. 91-92.

  • From magnum and showing as expected after a disappointing (?slightly flawed) 75cl noted a few days ago. Still forward but with pleasing cherry, gentle earthy frame, dusty tannins, dry spice and floral nuances with an assertive if integrated core acidity. Medium bodied with a long dry finish. Excellent enough if not top draw nor for the long term in my opinion.
Now (well breathed) and up to, say, 14 years from vintage.

  • Drinkable but not sure that this bottle was in perfect knick - seemed prematurely aged, pale and slightly edgy. Will try another in due course - nowhere near my 91pt 2021 outing.

  • Coravin access. Tasted alongside the same vintage Vajra Bricco delle Viole and PdB Montefico.

The least impressive of the three wines, and also quite restrained. Somewhat muted bouquet, of tart and sweet red berries, hibiscus, rose hip, raspberry leaf tea, cut tobacco, savory herbs, and menthol.

Correct in all regards, though nothing stood out. Medium minus body, for Barolo, and fairly high-pitched. A touch biting at the back. Interesting and likely to evolve for another decade or so. Not the equal of other vintages of this label. Quality nonetheless.

  • 100% Nebbiolo. Pale ruby color, fine and intense aromas of cherries, spices, rose petals. On the palate, full bodied, intense ripe cherries, very good balance, long finish. I decanted 3 hrs. Good to drink now but personally I would still keep this al leas 2 years in cellar to gain maturity and complexity. No doubt it will be better.

  • Coravin fun - Vietti (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. A little cherry, plum, sweet spice, pot pourri notes, grow with time and a certain earthy minerality, pretty nose. Wetly juicy with medium plus intensity acidity, tight, slightly coarse (though not rustic) tannic rasp supports the fruit flavours (and some more oaky notes) on the long finish. Alcohol is well managed. Nice.

  • Opened for Eagles game on a whim popped and poured and paired with a variety of food. Thought Italian wine made sense for Philly victory karma. I would not say this wine is super tannic but it drinks as too young and closed. Medium cherry red to reddish brown color. No sediment at all. With plenty of time in the glass it opebs a little but still tight. Pleasant with the variety of food we had but not super. Faint nose of rose petals and minty spice. Flavor muted but some light sour cherry and cranberry with a touch of overly acidic balsamic in the medium finish. I doubt this wine can ever be exceptional but give it a few years and it will be a little better. 89-90 for now potential maybe 92? Hold.

  • Still very tannic. Air helped but I think wait a couple more years at least

  • Still needs lots of air. High pitched balsamics

  • Tannic and green, even after a 3 hour decant. Perhaps time will improve. Hmmm

  • This needs a lot of time in bottle or a long decant. Almost undrinkable upon opening but after a few hours of air it became quite nice. 90 -- 91

  • From a beautiful magnum.
We had very little time to decant and tasted not at the most optimum of conditions yet the wine its clearly of quality albeit a bit muted at this stage and would have lived a lot more of an expressive side. That been said with a bit more aeriation we definitely feel the wine would have shown better.

  • Medicinal red fruits, herbal and pine aromas. Maybe a touch of VA
    Medium body
    Medium+ to pronounced tannins
    Excellent length

2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Quite tight. Decanted for 30 minutes. Aromas of red cherry cough syrup (but not in a bad way, if that makes any sense), sweet red fruits, some VA notes of nail polish remover. After some aeration, some menthol notes and something savoury. Very pronounced gravel notes. The oak treatment is very subtle. With air, the cough syrup aspect of the cherry went away. A very complex nose
Medium bodied with high tannins with an immediate chalky grip. A somewhat simple palate compared to the nose. Some sweet fruits.
This needs much more time in bottle
    Excellent length
If drinking young give it at least an hour in decanter
92-93 potential with much more bottle age

  • Half bottle, tasted over a relaxing evening.

Very tight upon opening, the bouquet featuring red currant and herbaceous aromatics, atypical of Barolo. With air, the bouquet and profile transitioned to light strawberry and raspberry, with rose hip, rosemary, and wafting petrol notes.

This did not get enough air, and while it certainly emerged from its shell during the evening, it still seemed that a portion of the fruit was either from very young vines, or perhaps a touch under ripe. In sum, the finish was ever-so-slightly biting (pinched, green). Rock solid, if just a little underwhelming compared to other vintages of this typically high QPR label.

  • Ordered this bottle at the outstanding restaurant, Atlas, in Fayetteville, AR. The Vietti took just 20m to open up. It can unquestionably be appreciated young, and we all enjoyed it with a variety of dishes.

  • Drank after decanting 3 hours. Medium brick red in color. Dark cherries, cranberries, menthol with hints of roses on the nose. Flavors of cranberries and plums on the palate. Well balanced fruit, acid (medium-) and tannins (smooth) with a long finish. Does need air before drinking. Alcohol 14.5%.

  • A solid Barolo. Leaner than I was expecting, but nevertheless, it has all the right things in the right places. The tannin on the finish suggests you must drink this with a fatty/salty meal. Decanted for 1 hr.

  • Solid Barolo, young yet already in its drinking window: strawberry, leather, mature cherry, soft espresso and balsamic note, medium body, strong finish.

  • Beautiful ruby color Barolo with aromas of vanilla, strawberry, hi ya of cherry cola and beechwood. On the palate it has lifting acidity with mildly chewy tannins and dried fruits and some herbs. This is a strong cheese course or pasta piatto wine.

  • Very good. This is big in this vintage, but there's still the balancing freshness, and elegance. Good, juicy typicity, and most certainly built for food. Tannins need just a short time more before this is in the window. Pretty classy for the base Barolo. highly recommended

  • Roses and spice on the nose. The palate was initially a bit too tart for my liking, but settled after an hour and became more enjoyable with food. Fullness and density on the back palate with more red fruit and spice. Strong tannins make for a long, dense finish. Much more enjoyable with food (we had risotto) than without.

  • My Grade: EX. Very worthy of the high scores here. Clear, slightly bricked, ruby color. Interesting and complex nose with fresh strawberry, dried cranberry, almonds, vanilla, freshly-baked bread, fennel. Complex, juicy, bright and refreshing palate with dried cherry and cranberry fruit, lemon peel, nice minerality on the firm mid palate and long, dry and juicy cranberry and blackcurrant finish, with tobacco notes. Great effort, excellent food wine (see my profile for grades).

  • Fantastic wine. Great QPR. This does everything right. Complex and varietally correct yet beautiful. Strawberry and Roses with a tannic bite. Masculine and elegant at the same time. Will be wonderful for years. Glad I stocked up.

  • The 2015 Castiglione is pale to medium garnet in color and moderately transparent. I double-decanted this and then let it open up for about an hour before pouring the first glass (this needs every bit of air in its youth). The nose showcases aromas of baked cherry, dried strawberry, orange zest, licorice, mint, scorched earth, truffle, tar, and oak. There's also a bit of heat that will blow off with air or further aging. On the palate, I get notes of bing cherry, black raspberry, stemmy wild strawberry, earthy mushroom, tobacco, rocky soil, bitter dark chocolate, dried green underbrush, and charred oak. This wine is medium- to full-bodied with high acidity, high tannins, and a long finish. Give this 5 more years of bottle age and drink it over the following decade.

  • A vibrant, effusive nose; cherry, vanilla, orange peel, licorice flood the glass. On the palate, the same notes shine through—ripe cherry, vanilla and orange peel. Medium tannins flow through to a lingering finish.

  • Cherries and bouquet of roses on the nose at first. Developed with hints of vanilla and dark chocolate towards the end of the evening. Smooth and elegant, yet a strong grip on the palate. Grabs you by the balls.

  • Had it a bit too young, but for a barolo It showed fantastically at this age. Color has the brick orange tinge you would expect
Nose: wild strawberry and violet with some earthy notes. Licorice and mint in the back
Palate: tons of wild strawberry. Medium acidity and medium tannins, much less than expected. Opens up with a lot of mushroom and tomato concentrate and some cocoa.
Finish: medium with tartness and Ash

  • Logan berry, dark spice, earthy elements, new leather and cranberry. This has a full body and so much integrity, with a round, lush middle palate. Similar to the ‘05, with more completeness. There are fine, velvety tannins and a long finish. Sumptuous. This unfolds with marvelous fruit during the enticing journey. Drink 2022 - 2037.

  • Quick notes from a public tasting. Reds double decanted about 90 minutes in advance.

light bright red color, subdued earthy nose, violets, on the palate a baby with drying tannins, ripe and enticing cherry notes, chalk and mineral notes throughout the closed palate leading into an exceptional finish with a wonderful after-fragrance, showing little but this promises to be a most endearing mid-weight charmer.

  • Pale garnet in the glass. Beautiful aromatics - violets, dark chocolate, orange zest, sour cherry, redcurrant. Hints of freshly dug up soil. Ripe, expressed tannins, medium acidity and alcohol. Superb integration of the three. Very young right now with great drinking potential. Silky smooth. A serious Barolo.

  • The nose was spicy and alluring, showing a mix of crushed cherries, dried roses, sweet and savory spices, worn leather and hints of dusty earth. On the palate, I found soft textures, firmed up by zesty acids and minerals, yet also complimented by ripe cherries, sweet spice, beautiful inner floral tones and minerals. Fine tannin mounted with each sip, resonating throughout the long finish, along with a coating of mineral-infused red fruits, and savory minerality.

I remember tasting this many times from barrel, and loving it each time for it's spicy, vibrant nature, which perfectly concentrated those young Nebbiolo tannins. Some people have commented on the warmth of the vintage, but I find the '15 Castiglione to be harmonious and balanced.

  • Nice light floral notes, riper cherry, sour cherry, dry finer tannins than the Marengo, higher acid, bit more austere, more red hue. Good, but not really a fan of the last 3 bottles I had of this. Wine House class with Diego.

  • Muted nose. Medium to slightly light body for a Barolo. Dusty spices and dried red fruits but very mild and unassuming. This only works because of the refreshing acidity and the oh so silky and long tannins.

  • Finer than that big and concentrated 16 Perbacco. Still rocking that licorice on a less concentrated palate. Seems contrary to my preconceived notion of 15s v 16s. Awesome finish. Lots of baking spice in the finish.

  • Meet the Winemaker - Luca Currado, Vietti, 2019 (Brisbane): No formal notes. Vietti tasting 2019.
Light, simple fruit profile on nose.
Beautiful sweet fruited palate. Clean finish. Not particularly tannic.

  • Beautiful dark black purple color. Old world musty nose that is fantastic. This is a young wine and needs more time in the bottle. We decanted about 2hrs before the meal and this did make a difference. Very well balanced, but still tight and did not open up to its full potential. I would open in the morning before dinner or maybe the night before at this point. Will cellar well and I would like to have some more.

  • Soft and generous red cherry fruit aromas. Has some herbal undercarriage. Lots going on in this bottling. Tar, lighter licorice, not as fruit driven not the palate.

  • A young wine clearly, but remarkably approachable already, fresh and well balanced. It delivers dusty spices and red fruit (cherries especially). I recommend to let it breathe a little, which brings another layer to it. It drinks well now, but I expect it to be even more expressive when the tannins soften a bit in the future.

  • Rose petals, ash, celery salt, sour cherry and raspberry on the nose. Medium-high tannins that are very well integrated. Very long finish with pronounced flavor intensity. I think this wine will definitely improve, but is remarkably approachable right now.

  • Medium reddish ruby in color. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries & raspberries with overtones of roses & earthy/dusty notes, some tar, minerals, spices, dried herbs & toasty oak in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of start cherries, strawberries & mulberries with dried herbs, minerals, earthy & just a gentle hint of toasty oak. Lingering finish. Drinks well at present with decanting & airing but should develop further with additional aging.

  • Piemonte Reds (5/6 Nebbiolo var) (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): "The grapes are selected from small vyds spread in the Barolo region. The vines are between 8 & 41 years old, planted in a clay-limestone soil. Plants are trained with the guyot method, with an average density of roughly 4,500 units/ha. All the different crus are vinified & aged separately with slightly different processes to underline the singular characteristics of each parcel & terroir. Fermentation occurs in s/s with daily cap submersion for extraction of flavor & color. The wine is aged for roughly 30 mos in oak and barriques; all parcels are then carefully blended before bottling."

Had been in a small tasting glass ≈75 min before I got to it

N: Fairly fragrant melding of cherries & roses, with tar/minerals WAY underneath?

P: MF body; RNDISH entry with NICE frt QUICKLY met by astringent PUCKER which basically carries through the LONG, PUCKERISH finish with HINTS of swtness to come? NEEDS through '23, poss more, but everything SEEMS there. My EXC-, but I can see several "notches" more... eventually. 94 pts Suckling & 91 Vinous (Galloni). [This vendor's $45.95 is $2 < wine-searcher's next lowest.]

N: Closed; Vanilla, poss roses? (budosyu sensed notes of nail polish.)

P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt fairly quickly met by astringent PUCKER which only somewhat softens as it transitions into a LONG, slightly puckerish finish with a distinct swtness to the dusty tannins. LOTS of potential, but will NEED through '22, poss even more, then making its 15th? My EXC/EXC+. 94 pts Suckling & 91 Vinous (Galloni). [This vendor's $45.95 is $2 < wine-searcher's next lowest.]

  • 7 Days in Italy II; 2/17/2019-2/23/2019: Much more open knit than the Masseria Barbaresco 2015, with loads more perfume too.
Luca notes that 2014 was a severe (acid, but classic vintage), he loves 2015 for it’s opulence. Fruity and approachable. 2016s will need more time than the 2015s, but with more potential too.

  • Here we go atruffling... (aka Piedmont... and Veneto); 11/16/2018-11/30/2018 (Alba, Guarene, Modena, Barolo, La Morra, Lake Garda .....): It is a bit similar to the 2010 with the sweet red fruits right at the end. Some tannin and general backbone to the wine. Very young. Spicy. Lots of cherries. It is also holding something back (similar to the 14) but that could just be because it is quite a young wine. Ends with a bit of a drying tannin.
