  • A nice Riesling that was enjoyed over Thanksgiving dinner.

  • Brilliant deep yellow gold. Low intensity nose of citrus and stone fruit with a light herbal note. The palate is not very concentrated; instead, age has muted the body but not in a bad way - a lot of weight, but somehow delicate. Dried orange, a bit of apricot pit bitterness, and a salty, stony mineral acidity. The acidity is piercing, and makes this so refreshing and gulpable. This is moving beyond its prime, clearly, but is still so delicious. Sadly, open to done was less than two hours, so I didn’t have a good sense of how this wine might develop with some air.

  • Birthday bash tasting (Convivial - Washington, DC): A bit tired, but still nice, showing a lot of attractive aged characteristics. Crisp yet lush with apricot and spiced tea notes. I get this distinct pine sap note that is pretty cool.

  • This might be a bit on the downhill slide, but it is still a beautiful example of an aged white wine. Surprisingly, the nose was a bit subdued and I was expecting a petrol bomb. On the palate there is an overriding sense of smokiness, which adds a depth, rather than being overpowering. There seems to be a foundation of almost cider like apples, with dried oranges, tangerines, limes, salty meyer lemon and a slight mint note all covered in a patina of 24 years of age. The acidity is fading, but the finish, while not powerful at all, has a lingering, haunting, quality to it. If you appreciate the uniqueness of aged wines, this has it in spades.

  • Exactly, and I mean exactly, the same as my 6/20/12 note. This hasn't budged, is fat at first, then sleekens to a shimmering example of aged Riesling. This has another decade ahead of it, at least. I'm thankful for CT, in that I could easily see that note, open and aerate the bottle significantly ahead of serving, which helped its performance significantly. I strongly recommend a six hour slow ox, and every couple hours significantly shaking, to aerate the bottle. Was brilliant, and still unfolding after open an hour in glass. 92pts, 94pts personal preference.

  • Mixed German and Alsatian vertical tasting (Chez Eric): A treat to drink. Color is still very youthful - The freshest out of the lineup - lots of citrus, lime leaf, lemongrass, petrol, peach. Slate and mineral on the palate with good acidity. well balanced. finishes clean.

  • (Mostly) Rieslings at Lan Sheng (Lan Sheng, NYC): Very pretty; fresh lime, citrus and green apple fruit framed by a patina of more mature smoky and creamy elements, and a gentle mineral undercurrent beneath. There's really bright acidity here that keeps it very refreshing and precise, and the balance here is fantastic. Lovely.

  • Library release. First night: Bright gold and green hued yellow. Wow! Boistrous nose of baking spices, underripe citrus and a strong peach pit/botrytis component. Soft attack with a dry, almost trocken-like mid and especially end palate. Waxy, almost Semillon-like in texture and even flavor aspects. A bit dilute in mouthfeel, almost hollow. Not the depth and structure I'd hoped. Lots of baking and brown spices on the palate as well. Intruiging. Talc emerging over time, along with a very strong baked ripe apple flavor profile, which I don't like.
Second night: Nose more knit, with spicy baked yellow fruit predominant. More acid on the attack, and brighter throughout. This is more of what I expected. Nice long mouthwatering slightly tart finish and packed with the beginnings of secondaries, while still holding delicious, primary, bergamot and slightly underripe white peach fruit. No sign of the botrytis elements or the spiced baked apples from last night.
This is part of why I like aged world-class Riesling - so everchanging and kaleidoscopically alive.
This bottle will last another decade, but I'd go for it now and get all these aspects as they unfold. Beautiful! 92 pts pure quality, 94 pts personal preference.

  • Apparently a library release. Delightful, mature Riesling with a palate of clear green fruit, lime, petrol and minerals. The wine is soft and round yet with excellent precision and cut. A treat. With Jason at Foreign & Domestic in Austin.

  • 90's Dinner: Slow-oxed about an hour before serving. Unappealing balloon nose. A touch of sweet apple fruit on the palate, but minerality is predominant. Not much acidity left, texture is round and viscous. Didn't enjoy this quite as much as my last two bottles, following the Henriot probably didn't do it any favors.

  • Deep gold. Powerful, expressive nose showing key lime and granny smith. On the palate, this is youthful, fruity and fresh. Honeyed citrus fruit coats the mid palate with amazing focus and a precise acidic cut. Stone fruit emerges on the back of the palate and this wine just keeps delivering bright flavors. I love the texture on this wine and the finish brings the lime on the nose into a deeper focus. I liked the 1991 from earlier this year just a shade better, but this is excellent as well.

  • Another very fine showing. Acid still bright, subtle petrol notes, on the palate, green apple, pear and perhaps an inflection of meyer lemon and/or key lime. The wine seems to be in a very fine place and will stay there for quite some time. VERY happen to have fallen into a few more bottles recently.

  • A much better showing than a bottle I had earlier this year. There's a faint mustiness initially that had a few worried about TCA, but it blows off quickly to show bright pear and green apple fruit over a steely mineral base augmented by maturing petrol, smoky and creamy notes. There's still plenty of cut and precision here, wonderful balance and the stuffing and structure to age for a while longer.

  • Nicely aged with tons of petrol on the nose along with fennel fronds, almond, lime and white fruits. Lovely palate still showing some acidity, and a bit of sweetness.

  • This bottle started off quite musty on the nose but that blew off after about a half-hour. It opened up really nicely to reveal soft ripe lemon and honeydew, subtle spice and minerality and just enough acidity. This wine is delicate and pretty and I love it. I'd recommend opening in advance of serving.

  • My system (nose mouth finish) +//, big powerful nose of flowers and oil, bracing acidity

  • A little musty on the nose at first (I wondered if it was corked initially), but clears up with some air to show bright white fruited flavours and developed petrol and smoky notes. Mature, nicely balanced, though not showing the mineral character I'd like in a Saar wine. Moderate sweetness matched by nice acids, very nice.

  • Remarkably light color for a nearly 19-year old wine (or even for a young wine). Big hit of petrol on opening, then also some candied dried fruit (think candied orange slices). Somewhat shy on the acidity, and seems a bit unfocused; white fruit with a lemony finish. I'm not as wild about this wine as some others seem to be, which is not to say it isn't pretty good -- especially for the $32 I paid. Certainly worth the price of admission.

  • Picked this up at K&L. Good Rieslings age so gracefully. Pale yellow in the glass. Soft lemon, lime and apples with a petrol and acidic finish. The cork was quite moldy on the top but with a little clean up it was fine.

  • Light yellow. Petrol and baked apple nose. Light-bodied and round on the midpalate. Sweet apples and minerals, with lemony acidity coming through on the backend and finish. Really tasty, paired perfectly with a Dungeness crab salad. Library release and a great value.

  • Yowza. Earlier reports by someone (who may have been me) that this is approaching its sell-by date were gross exaggerations. This is perhaps the freshest bottle of this '92 Spatlese that I've yet had, with more bright fruit and less of that mouldering stone qualilty I've found in some earlier bottles. Opens with super-pretty notes of lemon and lime (note to the Coca Cola Company: if Sprite were even 1/20th this delicious and complex, I'd be putty - putty! - in your hands), then fleshes out to this outrageous shredded coconut component. Then for a final trick the coconut was replaced in the last glass by a powerful display of freshly cut ginger. What was remarkable about this wine was the way the disparate dominant flavors came in successive waves, resulting in a series of very different profiles. This puppy has miles to go before it sleeps.

  • Showing well. Library release. Restrained Nose. Some petrol notes, slightly steely. Opens up very nicely on palate, lime and honey, rich, sweetness resolved, good but not great acidity, Really enjoyable and lots of nuance

  • Nice petrol, peach and green apple and wet stone on the nose. Cooked apples, petrol, lime, and lemon on the palate. Drinking well, not as intense as some aged Riesling but rather good.

  • Top of the cork fuzzy and almost black, but no signs of leakage or ullage. I've been lucky enough to drink several bottles of this in the recent past, and this was the most developed bottle by far. So much petrol on the nose here that I'd be leery of opening this around an open flame. That petrol character changes to one of stone, but not the fresh minerality of good Sancerre or Muscadet, or even the wet-slate-roof character of young Mosels - instead, this is the scent of decomposing rock, rotting stone. Can stone rot? If so, this is what rotten stone smells like. That maturated quality to the minerality isn't the cleanest I've ever encountered in a Riesling, and the fruit is perhaps not quite potent enough now to counterbalance the funky grotto-like aromatics. Don't get me wrong, I like this - and not just because I'm a sucker for German Riesling. It's got Zilliken's hallmark lime and green apple flavor profile, now more muted than is usual even for this producer's filigreed style. The funky rock also appears on the palate as a musty dimension to the fruit, together with just a hint of the sweetness this wine possessed at a younger age. Now it's more a suspicion of honey than honey itself, fading as the wine itself now seems to be. I hope the remainder of my bottles are fresher, but will probably look to drink them over the coming year.

  • Smooth; moderate petrol; lime on the palate; mouthfeel is on the lighter side; lacks depth, but is a pleasurable drink nonetheless. Gut impression score: 86-88.

  • Served at 46 degrees without decanting. Pale yellow with green highlights. Floral, petrol, and mint nose. Petrol, peach, lemon and apple flavor. Good wine but not at the price.

  • At first sweeter and less acid-driven than I'd expected, given the age and pradikat level and region, this comes into better balance on the second night, seems drier, and shows good stony minerality and lime peel on the long peel-out. Nice aromas of spearmint, green apple, and peach. Additional aging recommended, or at least a good decant.

  • Mint, petrol and melon bouquet. Off dry with citrus, nice fruit though a bit flat and a good core. A touch too sweet for me, drink now.

  • Heavy petrol on the nose. The petrol tends to cover anything else. Soft on the tongue with nice underlying acidity. Nice fruitiness with the petrol under control. Pleasant. Nothing distinguished.

  • This is showing perfectly now, with a mostly off-dry nature. A sturdy nose of slate, petrol, lime peel and lemon curd. A medium straw colour with 4 transitions. This one is ready to drink, and I don't see it getting any better. The wine showed great focus, but by the second glass it was obvious that the fruit is beginning to tire. Approx $32, drink thru 2012

  • popped and poured for my 16th anniversary (was married in 1992)...I got a soft wine that tasted of green apples and some minerality. A little drier than most spatleses that I have had ....very easy to quaff and pretty tasty the sub 8% alcohol also makes it easy to have more than a glass, I liked this wine but it just did not have that special oomph to it.. not a great QPR...

  • EWG Yu Jean Kang’s: Lite white, Lite peach, delicate, really smooth, silky, mellow, but youthful; very elegant, like a flower petal; Very nice, lite, low sugary taste, but delicate sweetness still there.

  • Germany 2006 Report - Rudi Weist/David Bowler; 6/4/2007-6/8/2007 (Tribecca Grill): surely worth the entrance fee - a well aged riesling that is cool and tangy with a long finish. a kabinet by the post 2001 standarts but a lovely one.
