Definitely a better bottle than the last, especially the aromatics. Purplish-garnet, glass-staining viscosity, expressing lovely initial scents of red berries, iron, and licorice that evolve to more earthy and complex tones. The palate is not as intense and effusive as the nose but offers a pleasing, supple sweetness with a hint of bitterness that appears with certain foods. Though the flavor impression lacks complexity and persistence, the wine drinks well now, yet has plenty of life remaining, and represents a great current value.

very nice, red to dark red fruit, full minus body (at least for a pinot), good acidity for lift (and to fight the dark fruit and full minus body)... my son Andy said it well -- "perfectly balanced"... he tasted blind and interestingly thought it might be a cab (like an old Ridge Monte Bello)... the good news is that is wasn't brutish (like some '05's we've had, particularly a few years ago and before)... happy that the '05's are finally coming around a bit

Opened 3 hours earlier and brought in voss. Bouquet of roses, unriped cherries, walnut skin, cherry pith. Palate showed warmth and ripeness but still pretty balanced vintage. Cherry liquer and plums slightly dominant on the palate. Good structure and density with tannins sturdy and stubborn but not grippy. Was not blown away and perhaps still needs a bit more time?

(from memory) Medium ruby, subtle nose with limited scents of plum, black cherry, and earth, palate is bright in the extreme with tightly wound red fruit, hints of earth, minerality, and large, powdery tannins, finish is also limited with red fruit, touches of iron, char and loom
Note: Cellared from release, given the current price point of this wine, if I had more bottles I would gladly auction them off, maybe a bad bottle but given the mixed reviews from other cellar tracker members, I think the "pros" just got this one wrong

Dark burgundy color with a ruby rim. Notes of woodsy, wild plum, sauvage, leading to deep cherry liqueur. Closed palate initially. Shallow plum notes develop over time on the palate, concluding with a fleeting finish. Though this appears and smells young at this point, it lacks the stuffing to evolve to a better state.

Beautiful, masculine wine. PnP. Wonderful clarity, color and depth in the glass. Spicy red/black fruit notes on the nose. Substantial yet velvety mouthfeel, with sturdy but refined tannins. Long and complex finish that yields some smoke and earth notes. Drinking fabulously now but many good, and even better, years ahead.

decanted and drank after a 30 minutes of opening up. very masculine; the nose is dark fruit; the mouthful is quite powerful with dark berries, some asian spices; acidity is still there and tannic finish for a red burgundy. this is very good but i would have preferred a more elegant sophisticated feminine wine as this was a bit more blunt to score higher.
Quite backward and firm. Dark fruit, spices, earthy notes, woodsmoke. On the palate powerful and grippy, good acidity, lots of fruit, but quite tight. Good length. Keep? 91-93

Not a huge red burgundy fan - my palate probably isn't sophisticated enough to really appreciate them. Nonetheless this was a lovely wine with a subtle floral nose. Dark red fruits on the palate with soft tannins.

after a solid hour decant, this seemed a bit more muted, particularly in the nose. the mouthful and finish were pretty but i expected more. perhaps its in a dumb down phase? it has potential...i'm curious to give this a try in another 2-3 years as it did seem to gain more depth as it breathed...

Charming at this stage, very elegant and finessed. Lovely creamy yet vibrant red fruit. Still needs a little more time to really shine though. Definitely agree BurgundyAl and DrWine2001, hold hold hold.

Bourgogne tasting (at my home): P&P very dark translucent red--brown-black dark fruits fine nose with spices & coffee notes, hints of sous-bois and earthy mushrooms fine firm tannins, well balanced & harmonised, fine structure & complexity, rustic style, smoky meat, tobacco, subtle liquorice, fine spicy character & finish, long rustic aftertaste

La Paulée de San Francisco - The Verticals (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Tasting, brief note. Black and red fruit with concentrated savory spice. Firm structure gives a slightly backward character, but this has the density and power that it will certainly evolve into a very charming and elegant 2005, with 92-93 point potential, from 2020 going forward.

The Verticals Tasting at La Paulée 2016 (The Fairmont, San Francisco): Light ruby. Game, woodsmoke, and funk. Dark red to black fruit. Excellent concentration. Backward, grippingly tannic, strong acidity. Classic. Put it under lock and key for another 10 or 15 years, that is how unready it is now.

Still a baby. Similar notes as before. Found this to be very young. Although drinking well already, there are better days ahead for this wine. Would wait a few more years for the next bottle.

im mainly a bordeaux drinker but this was the first burgundy which helped me understand why many rate the region so highly. great wine with layers of complexity you don't get from a new world pinot noir. may well improve but was drinking very well after a 2 hour decant

Red Burgundies - Louis vs. Louis: Earthy, musty nose with a bit of barnyard, round and smooth in the mouth, this one seems to have more age on it than would be expected from it's 2005 vintage. Drinking really well now.

I haven't touched my 05s but someone brought this one over. Smoke and red fruits on the nost. structured rich palate with fruit, earth, mineral and that smoke on the nose. high tone, good acid and long finish. Not realy tannic as I might expect. Really quite drinkable but I think this will be much better in 10 years.

Gobs of dark berry and cherry fruit that carries all the way through to a notably sappy, lip-smacking finish. On the expressive nose the fruit rides over subtle vanilla, saline, and camphor notes. Quite firm and intense in the mouth with mineral elements, but the fruit buffers the tannins. Really delicious with a bright future. 93+

Jadot Tasting with Jacques Lardiere (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): An excellent Clos Vougeot in the making, with dense black and red cherry aromas and meaty spice. Very firm on palate, somewhat backward in middle, but elegant and concentrated on long finish. 92-94 point potential to me, but hold to 2020 or later.

Jadot Tasting with Jacques Lardiere (Knightsbridge): Big bright tight red/purple fruit on the nose - clean and bright. Big tight tannic purple fruit on the palate. This has the stuffing, but really needs some time.

Concentrated dark fruit and tobacco. Remarkably long finish with refined tannins. As good as it is, likely to be better in the coming decade.

Maybe just my bottle but not up to what my expectation was. Little over extracted, even stewed dark fruit, moderate tannin and fading acidity.
