Gang of 4 in Covid19 times; Bordeaux; Margaux (@ RW): A lot of vanilla, oak, autumn forest and lead pencil in the bouquet. On the palate autumn forest floor, mushrooms, herbs and spices, chocolate, still a touch of bell pepper, good acidity and slightly sticky tannin. Beautiful and mature wine with still a pleasant bite.

This was purchased on release, cellared and double decanted for sediment an hour prior to dinner. Still very youthful, will dark ruby color and lovely perfume of violets, cassis and earth. Initially showing a bit of tannins, this really became more velvety and integrated over time and the last glass was best. Makes me think that well stored bottles will peak in 5-10 years.

My last bottle of this wine. Youthful color. Deep purple, opaque. Classic Bordeaux nose. Cedar, pencil shavings. Fruit pretty much gone. Acidity sticking out a bit, but it could be because the wine is warming up real fast. Smoked meat. Not bad at all if the acidity wasn't so prominent. Still, this is likely due to less than optimal tasting conditions (way too hot here). Still a bit of tannin on the back. Good length. Maybe best to drink up in any case.

This is probably the best Siran I have tasted since I first visited the chateau in just 2000. This reminds me about the first Siran bottles I collected from 1970, -78, and -79 that marks the start of my wine collection/cellar. This wine tastes like a classical Bordeaux, medium to full bodied with primary aromas of cedar, cassis, hint of menthol, then round, well integrated tannins with a long aftertaste of leather and wet forest floor.

From the 'Lost Cellar'. Deep purple, crimson colour. Lifted nose of blackcurrant, plum, violet chocolate, cedar and touch of earth. Lovely palate of fine fruit with a fresh mineral lift on the end that added more distinction than previous bottles. A beautiful example of Siran.

Nice wine here that is clearly drinking where you want it to be. The nose shows secondary characteristics of tobacco, flowers, dark red fruits and forest floor scents. There is good texture, concentration, length and freshness in the earthy, blackberry filled finish.

Deep crimson with some bricking at the edge. Nose of blackcurrant, dark plums, cedar and earth. Approx an hour in the decanter. Rich purple coloring. A hint of funk on the approach, but otherwise a very 'cab' nose on this one. Cedar is there and a bit of perfume. Well integrated and engaging, however not a powerhouse aromatically. Served with a beef dish, though I think this could be a better match for a milder more subtle pairing since it's not a rich wine. Can be enjoyed now or in the next 10yrs. Not sure it would benefit much from aging beyond that.

We tasted this '00 and its '09 cousin in the tasting. I rated this wine as 3rd place, but the group majority gave it the 1st place nod. You could certainly tell that the style of the '00 differed from the '09. '00 was during the father's tenure, which was passed on to the son in '07. The '09 was more modern in the oak tones of vanilla and smoke, whereas the '00 had a little of the barnyard on it. Both had big fruit that was round and full.

Easy drinking, user-friendly wine from Margaux. Nicely-balanced, showing well with dark fruits, tobacco, graphite, and a hint of cedar. Round tannins that are not drying at all. Medium finish with nice acidity. There are at least a few years left here. Not necessarily a special wine, but will be seen as an excellent value for many.

Beautiful garnet color that lightens to clear at rim. The nose has oak, graphite, coffee and clean Cabernet fruit. Certainly big and bold for Margaux. Rich and creamy yet not heavy and actually finishes with good zip. The nose made me worry that is was made in an overly modern style but the palate shows much more freshness and balance. Just entering its sweet spot - should continue to drink well for another 10 plus years. (89)

Still plenty of raspberry and blackberry on the nose and palate, ripe, fruity, with zest and some elegance backing it up. But this is not evolving particularly well: the wine has flattened out over the last year. The fruit is jammifying as it should, but there isn't the second dimension that I was hoping for. The wine hits the bottom of the palate well, slides nicely down the throat, but there isn't the grip or soaring secondary flavours that the 99 had, for example. I wouldn't say this will improve, it's a nice, friendly wine, accessible and pleasant, but one dimensional.

Beautiful, perfumed nose delivering roses, capicum, eucalyptus, earthy minerality over a core of cassis. Less complex but still very elegant palate with refreshing acidity, firm fine-grained tannins that lead to a relative long finish. Lacks perhaps great depth but is looking delicious and savoury now promising to be in shape for the next 6-8 years.

-- decanted immediately before tasting -- -- tasted non-blind over a few hours --
NOSE: fruity – expressive wash of raspberry licorice, blackberry, and loganberry all tightly-interwoven; hints of minty chalk and earth; after considerable time in the glass, a faint whiff of hickory smoke emerged, too.
BODY: sediment present; dark blood-red color of medium-deep depth; maybe just a touch of warming orange/red aged color creeping-in at the edges; full bodied.
TASTE: on the palate, this gives an impression of ripe fruit, lots of glycerine, and perhaps low acidity; perhaps the acidity is actually average, or even high, and it’s merely masked by lots of ripe fruit right now; tannins are nearly completely integrated, but still show a soft and fine-grained nature; flavors expressive and are very Bordeaux, to me, albeit certainly in the riper end of the Bdx. spectrum: leathery dark berries with a touch of earth dominate until “Bdx. funk” comes rushing forward on the finish; with time in the glass, this becomes less funky and more minerally, and a hickory aspect emerges, as well; 13% alc. is not noticeable; although not a mind-bending experience, this bottle does offer some intellectual intrigue. I think this is in the beginning of its drink window, and feel this is best consumed from 2011 – 2021. With time, I feel like my score could prove to be a bit conservative. “A” had similar feelings about the wine as I:
YES. every dog has its day. This wine is now coming into its own.really good tart acidity followed by real bordeaux good fruit and all those great tobaccoy nose. Really good.

Decanted for 45 mins or so. First sniff in the decanter very enticing: deep sweet fruit and cedar. Followed through in the glass. Much sweeter than I remember; very plush, and became quite cinnamon spicy. Looked really youthful still. Drinking very well now, but note the sweetness. Not the 'proper' and slightly stern Siran I remember. Lots of pleasure, though.

Dark with a purple base, more garnet towards the rim (generally a healthy colour but is it a touch watery at the edge?); powerful nose with heady black berries, cloves, vanilla and minerals - also a faint hint of alcohol (it leapt from the bottle and filled the room when opened); very long and intense with enough tannin and acidity to last. Tasted briefly when opened, the wine kept well in glass and bottle for over four hours. However it was still a little closed, I suspect it will be better integrated in a few, say four or five years', time. I'll have to purchase some more to find out.

Soft and supple and a bit faded, this wine is in early retirement. It shows a very light nose of darkish fruits with hints of leather and tobacco. Palate is on the light side with a splash of darker fruits, but balanced, as the tannins and acids have mellowed. Finish was short. It has clearly faded but is still pleasant, and should be consumed in the next few years.

Dark crimson color with a beautiful bouquet filled with potpouri, toasted vanilla, forest floor. Medium-to-full-bodied with a structure that runs its course without any peaks or valleys - just goes steady. Flavors of dark cherry at the core with hints of toasted oak, tobacco, and graphite. This ends in a slightly tannic, but attractive, and nothing that couldn't be refined over time. Overall, I actually expected more from the 2000, but I found that it was sort of stuck in the middle in terms of character between the 1998, which was very refined and elegant (given the mediocre vintage), and the 2004, which I found to be more on the modern, fruit forward, and approachable side. Drink from 2012 to 2025.

Drinking beautifully now. Dark purple, no visible signs of ageing. Nose of cedar and leather. Dark fruits, leather and smoke (cigar box) make this a classic bordeaux in some respects, but there is a softness (merlot?) that just makes it very approachable. Tannins have fully resolved, leaving a fair amount of acid. The acid may outlast the fruit, making this better with food than stand alone. Finish is a bit clipped, but overall a very nice Bdx. I will drink one of these a year over the next decade just to follow the development.

A deep coloured wine with a ripe, but also fresh bouquet; not exactly what you expect of a margaux. The wine reminds me of Pibran '89; I think due to a high percentage of merlot which makes the wine round. The cabernet however gives the wine the punch in the back, just enough to let the wine end in the mouth with a nice bite. The balanced aftertaste contains lots of very ripe tannins. This is a perfect example of the quality of 2000. Enjoy this wine now and the following 5 years.

Vinturied and decanted. Dark ruby color and a medium nose. First impression was Asian spice, followed by cedar and graphite. On the palate there is cedar box, leather and light fruit. Finishes with milod tannins; both the fruit and tannins are softening and receding, but still well in balance.

Similar to the last bottle a year ago. Light fruit, leather and tobacco. Light bodied, but balanced. Short finish. Should be consumed in the next few years.

When corona forces you to work at home (March 28, 2020) than you go cleaning, so I found this tasting note. A dark colour, firm fruit, firm and smooth taste, not sophisticated, but a lot of fun in your glass.

B: 50, 5, 12, 16, 8 = 91(+)
A: 50, 5, 10, 17, 8 = 90

The wine reminds me of Pibran '89; I think due to a high percentage of merlot which makes the wine
round. The cabernet however gives the wine the punch in the back, just enough to let the wine end
in the mouth with a nice bite. The balanced aftertaste contains lots of very ripe tannins.
This is a perfect example of the quality of 2000. Enjoy this wine now and the following 5 years.

Tasted at a NCWS "Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel" tasting. Blackcurrants and spice on the nose. Less obviously mature than Ch Chasse Spleen, but soft and intense. Quite elegant; the Chasse Spleen was more rustic.

Vinturied and decanted. Dark ruby color and a medium nose. First impression was Asian spice, followed by cedar and graphite. On the palate there is cedar box, leather and light fruit. Finishes with milod tannins; both the fruit and tannins are softening and receding, but still well in balance.

Still a healthy garnet to the rim, it has a classic Bordeaux nose with cigar box and pencil shavings mingled w/ plum and cassis. A great mid-palate for depth, as wells as nice length made me wish for fewer tasters! Held it's own on day 2 w/o being gassed. Still has 5+ years
