Dinner with the wine group (O Sole Mio): Aromatic, some oak and coconut, spice, floral, primary fruit; tons of primary fruit, spice, oak; finish is long. This needs a decade, honestly. 91++

a week ago, and no notes, but this was really nice... had with the Arcadian '02 "Sleepy Hollow" and they both were excellent... one thing I do remember, this wasn't heavy / brooding like some '05's I have had in the past can be... happy about that

Wine Tasted at Acker Auction (Marea - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Charming and enticing aromas. Lots of red cherry start-to-finish. Very firm palate, especially on finish. Good+ potential but needs time.

Lovely wine. Last bottle. Served blind to two friends who very quickly went... Volnay... great vinatage... 2005 or 1999.... Montille? ldelicious for a few hours. Less impressive the next day.

bleh... this didn't have much going on on the palate... hope my last two are better... would love to say it appeared to be shut down but more likely just not a lot to like (at least this bottle)

nice wine, pretty darn four square, easy and pleasant but nothing special for the $100 price tag... right down the middle all the way with nothing standing out (bad or great)... have three more offsite -- will be curious (assuming I don't drink to early) if this will blossom more and become more complex in 5-10-15 years

A bit thin and tannic upon opening but broadens a bit after being open for an hour and becomes quite nice if not excellent. I get the sense that this is coming out of the typical De Montille dormancy and should be drinking well in a couple of years.

Blind at Anita: Fresh cranberries, rhubarb, minerals present. Guessed NSG on this but Volnay makes a lot of sense--bright red fruits and a bit juicy. Still doing well in its youth. try again in 2-3 years.

We popped this expecting it to be somewhat shut-down (having only tasted 05 Bourgognes, and none recently). The nose was shy, giving only that darkly mineraled/faint spice/bare whiff of fruit that suggests "too soon". Ok, so this will be one of those cerebral experiments where we struggle in vain to project the evolution of the wine. But wait, what's this?! Put that notebook away 'cause we've got a really generous wine here, opulent even, with raucous layers of ripe fruit that thoroughly saturate the tannins. Why, it practically begs to be guzzled! The only "too soon" regret might be the dense, unresolved finish with a surprising amount of darkly mineraled extract for such suppleness and poise elsewhere.
But still . . . fun! Gulpable! Montille?
The Montille website describes their Mitans like so: "This is the expression of pleasure. It is probably the most sensual, even erotic wine of the Domaine." Wow, who knew?

Sweet, sweet infanticide... Austere as a Montille should be but with a lot of potential for improvement with another 5+ years. Too bad I don't have any.

Knightsbridge Holiday Burgundy Sale (Northbrook, IL): Very classically styled Volnay with all red fruit aromas, slightly floral and good spice. Flavors of red cherry with good acidity and minerality. Quite highly structured like most 2005s so not very accessible today, but good potential. Moderate length.

Burgundy and Some Old World Style New World Pinot (RN 74, San Francisco): Medium ruby with more transparent edges. Shockingly forward, inviting floral (rose) and earth aromas for a Montille wine, but the structure asserts itself in the second act, with anise, fine grained tannins, and powerful acidity. Some spice and red fruit come out as well. Bigger than the '05 Angervilles I've tried. Needs some time to integrate its two halves, but this is very Volnay and very beautiful wine. This is not your father's (or his father's) de Montille.
