Introduction

Hours of hard work.

Flight 1 - Champagne (9 Notes)

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (8 Notes)

Flight 3 - Red Burgundy (64 Notes)

  • 2006 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Black and red cherry aromas with background spice. Similar to the Volnay Caillerets but slightly more shut down, so showing a bit less of everything.

  • 2006 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Sweet red cherry aromas with classic Volnay spice and background floral hints. I really like this wine's balance, making it very accessible already today. Good length and finish. A real step up from its counterpart Volnay Bousse d'Or today.

  • 2008 La Pousse d'Or Pommard 1er Cru Les Jarollières 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Moderately ripe black plum and blackberry aromas that follow through on the palate. Came across as very black, yet slightly too lean for the wine's structure, so I'm not confident how this will evolve.

  • 2007 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Wow, what a pleasant surprise vs. the vast majority of 2007s from Nuits St. Georges. Great spiceon nose with very accessible mostly red cherry fruit. Delicate flavors with very little of the coarse animale character of too many 2007 NSGs. Very elegant spice coming through on moderate finish.

  • 2008 Domaine Robert Groffier Gevrey-Chambertin 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Black fruit, doesn't quite seem perfectly ripe, but does have some rough edges.

  • 2008 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes Mares 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Powerful black and red fruit aromas with background spice. Same flavor profiles come through on palate, slightly shut down right now. Big potential going forward, probably hold to 2016 or later.

  • 2009 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Lush red cherry aromas and flavors. Forward and accessible already, but with sneaky density and concentration that will combine with the structure that's mostly in the background today to keep this exciting and vibrant for another 15+ years. Good spice from middle to finish.

  • 2007 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Accessible black fruit, not incredibly concentrated or dense. Meaty spice provides some helpful power, really giving this classic Beze character. Drinking well now, really a good job for the vintage.

  • 2007 Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Lean red and black cherry aromas and flavors. Easy to miss this wine's nuance and complexity because everything is subtle, but really integrated and charming. Drinking nicely now, some upside over the enxt few years, but this will be a nice young drinking Grand Cru.

  • 2003 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Latricières-Chambertin 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Lush, ripe fruit, reasonably balanced for a 2003 Gevrey Grand Cru, but still clearly too 2003 for my preference. Big and robust to start through the middle, then somewhat short on the finish.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Latricières-Chambertin 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Ripe red and black cherry flavors, very accessible and easy to enjoy today. Good spice sneaks into the middle. Simple finish.

  • 2007 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Not much aromatically, this had moderate fruit, didn't come across as classically Beze. Good fruit to start but then a bit thin, almost harsh near the finish.

  • 2009 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Black fruit wtih lots of power and good spice. Not super complicated but very easy to enjoy. Somewhat better than when I last tried this a few months back, I think this will get better as it softens over the next few years. Impressive Villages level wine. Hard to describe anything from Olivier Bernstein as a good value, but this almost qualifies.

  • 2007 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Black fruit with good spice on nose, still showing a fair amount of new oak. Same black cherry and blackberry on palate, slightly simple but with balanced structure already and good textures today. Close to its peak.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2008 Olivier Bernstein Charmes-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Red and black cherry on nose, which continue onto palate along with a bit of blackberry as well. Moderate spice, well structured. This wine will need a few years to integrate better, but is already showing some very good power and intensity on the finish.

  • 2003 Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes - Coeur de Roy 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Not exactly my preferred style, as this combined 2003's overall ripeness and heat traces o the palate, with Dugat-Py's super/over-concentration.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2008 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Bourgogne 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Pure, bright red cherry coming through incredibly for a Bourgogne level wine. One of the best 2008s I've had at Bourgogne level, it's purely primary and probably at its best now, but really accessible, well done and truly charming today.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2005 Bernard Dugat-Py Bourgogne Cuvée Halinard

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Powerful black fruit with reasonable background spice. Very hard edges at the start, then some harshness for now at finish. Give this to 2015 or later.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Tough to assess this afternoon given the wine's very firm and prominent tannins. Lean red fruit with just hints of spice today, not much Volnay floral character right now. Give this a few more years in the cellar.

  • 2007 Sylvain Cathiard Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Floral notes and spice dominate the nose, showing beautiful pure fruit as well as some new oak elements. Red and black cherry with good spice on palate, moderately long, quite elegant. Both this and the Mugneret-Gibourg NSG Chaignots showed well for 2007 NSGs today, a place which I've generally avoided in the vintage because of lots of lean, under ripe fruit.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2008 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

A little bit sneaky in that it starts with lighter red cherry on the nose and first taste, then builds up density, power and starts showing some blacker fruit on middle and finish. Can still use a few more years in the cellar,I'd expect a peak drinking window starting 2014 or 2015.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Big fat black and blue fruit also showing just hints of spice, not quite at the level I'd hope to see from Vosne. Granted this is villages but priced as a premium Vosne Villages. Good minerality acidity keeps this in balance, avoiding the sense of New World character from the ripe fruit and heat traces.

  • 2009 Olivier Bernstein Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Similar to a tasting from a few months back. Clearly one of the more modern styled wines today, even seeming comparatively modern and generously oaked for the Bernstein lineup. Lush blackberry aromas and flavors, almost coming across as a bit plummy. Good power, reasonable length.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2008 Olivier Bernstein Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Lavrottes 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Red and black cherry aromas with plenty of new oak spice. Pwerful fruit on palate, very pleasurable and easy to enjoy, but not particularly nuanced. A bit simple on finish.

  • 2008 Domaine Francois Lamarche Grands-Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

I tried this twice in the course of the tasting, several hours apart with very different notes. At first this came across as quite austere and lean, albeit with very clean and precise fruit. Several hours later this was showing sensational spice combined with great red cherry and wild strawberry aromas, along with alluring floral aromas. Fruit on palate also put on weight and lengthened. If you open now, decant for many hours or hold for a decade. The initial tasting surprised me given how much I enjoyed this wine at the Domaine last year, the latter tasting was more consistent. This was almost on par with Grande Rue at the Domaine in 2010, but clearly a step behind today.

  • 2008 Domaine Francois Lamarche La Grande Rue 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru

My Wine of the Tasting, and this kept improving over the afternoon. Lush red fruit on nose and palate - wild strawberry and red cherry. Good spice throughout, this was already showing good balance when I first tasted, then got longer and more powerful when tasted again a few hours later.

  • 2005 Lucie & Auguste Lignier Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussieres 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Lots of ripe black fruit on the nose with background spice. same blackberry and black cherry on the palate, somewhat obscured today by robust and powerful tannins. This clearly has upside from where it is showing today, we just have to expect Hubert Lignier was able to craft a wine where the fruit will remain sufficiently vibrant for when the tannins soften. Fairly impressive raw materials for Villages level.

  • 2003 Hubert Lignier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

An easy wine to enjoy, especially for fans of domestic US Pinot Noir. Incredibly ripe, showing the 2003 vintage with lots of blackberry, black cherry, then even some plum flavors. Ok spice in background, but a bit one-dimensional for my preference.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2007 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes Mares 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Dense black fruit aromas, more lean on palate. Background dried herbs on both. Good approach, but simpler towards middle, then a bit harsh on finish.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Claude Dugat Gevrey-Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Far better than another bottle from a few weeks ago. Black fruit on nose and palate with good meaty spice as well. Good minerality and acidity complement the big black fruit nicely, providing good textures and energy. Nicely balanced and accessible now, should be better in 3 or 4 more years.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2008 Daniel Bocquenet Nuits St. Georges Aux St. Julien 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

Starts with good black fruit with lots of power and concentration, but far too much tannin that doesn't seem to work well yet with the fruit. A bit harsh on finish.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2008 Daniel Bocquenet Echezeaux 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Big red and black cherry aromas. Same fruit flows effortlessly onto the palate with fine tannins and lifting acidity. Perhaps not super long today, but good textures and energy into the finish.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2007 Domaine Darviot-Perrin Volnay 1er Cru La Gigotte 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Lean red cherry on nose with moderate spice on nose and palate with barest floral hints. Again lean on finish, perhaps even slightly harsh.

  • 2009 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Lush and powerful fruit, quite impressive Villages level wine. Accessible now but with enough structure and density to drink well for another decade.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2009 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Black cherry and blackberry on both nose and palate. Ripe but harmonious. Big, powerful but acidity and minerality provide great balance and textures. Hold for 5+ years to integrate some more and let tannins to soften.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2009 Jean-Marc Millot Savigny-lès-Beaune 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Simple red cherry aromas and flavors. On palate a bit more acid-driven than fruit-driven, a bit surprising for an entry level 2009.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2009 Jean-Marc Millot Echezeaux 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Bold red cherry aromas combine with moderate spice and interesting forest character. Big cherry flavors along with big tannins and intense minerality, essentially a big styled Echezeaux with lots of everything that should reward a decade+ in the cellar.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2009 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée La Combe Brûlée Vieilles Vignes 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Spice and earth on nose along with moderate red fruit. Too much acid for the fruit, putting this wine slightly off balance for me.

  • 2005 Gérard Raphet Morey St. Denis 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Strawberry on nose with trace of spice. Same strawberry along with red cherry on palate. Highly structured from middle to the finish, making the wine rather tight for now. Another 2005 that will take a good, long time to resolve but with very good raw materials and potential.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Gérard Raphet Clos Vougeot Cuvée Unique 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

An easy wine to enjoy, in fact most people at the tasting liked this quite a bit. i found it a bit simple with the spice almost entirely new oak driven today.

  • 2007 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Powerful black cherry aromas with some tarragon and thyme, all of which continue seamlessly onto the palate. Already close to its peak drinking window, this is a charming and balanced 2007 with lots of great texture and nuance.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Maison Champy Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Incredibly bright and ripe red cherry aromas, also slightly floral. Red and black cherry flavors with lots of energy. Very accessible already, this is entering its peak drinking window now and should be drinking very well for at least another decade.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Maison Champy Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Fortunately this was open for quite a while before I tried it because there was still a touch of sulfur coming through on the nose. Ripe mostly black fruit is very good, however wine is highly structured for now, with great power coming through on finish. Would have liked a bit more spice.

  • 2006 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

A somewhat controversial wine amongst some tasters who thought it corked, but I just felt it was classically Gouges with massive structure and barely accessible fruit in its youth (vs. others who thought the fruit stripped). Massively tannic, even a bit harsh, this is a wine to stash away in some corner of the cellar for 15+ years.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2005 Domaine de Montille Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

All black fruit with anise and pepper aromas. Blackberry and plum flavors, quite ripe with massive structure, to the point of harshness. Not a fun wine, it's tough to tell if this will integrate. Bottle itself was confusing since it barely even mentioned Montille as the producer, apparently because Montille bought and sold this all within a year and 2005 was the only year of production under his family Domaine label.

  • 2005 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Very classically styled Volnay with all red fruit aromas, slightly floral and good spice. Flavors of red cherry with good acidity and minerality. Quite highly structured like most 2005s so not very accessible today, but good potential. Moderate length.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2005 Domaine de Montille Beaune 1er Cru Les Perrières 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Pure red cherry and strawberry with hints of anise. Good overall, just rather simple.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Massive black cherry and cherry liqueur on the nose with some floral hints. Same big black fruit on palate with some licorice and sage. Bold and concentrated fruit work with the wine's huge tannins. This is a wine I'd like to see how it evolves over a day or two. Really big upside potential from here. Needs another decade. I'm wondering when my double magnum will be ready!

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

This was a huge positive surprise for me at this tasting, certainly one of the top three wines today. Bright red cherry on nose and palate with some wet forest aromas, then licorice and rosemary flavors. Great acidity and minerality with very fine, elegant tannins. This wine got bigger and bigger towards the finish, with lots of energy and increasing power. Really well done.

  • 2006 Louis Jadot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Mostly lean red fruit with moderate spice, not really showing the classic Vosne character today. Everything seems in good balance, but without much nuance or complexity.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots 84 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Incredibly ripe aromas and flavors. If served blind, this would be easy to identify as 2003. Not much beyond the ripe blackberry andplum, also rather short.

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Black and red cherry aromas and flavors with moderate spice, even if not quite so floral. Shows the vintage's 2003 ripeness, but on the right side of remaining in balance.

  • 2007 Maison Champy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Blackberry aromas, slightly under ripe, but still dense and powerful. Lots and lots of structure make this slightly out-of-balance. Short finish shows the same slightly under ripe fruit.

  • 2008 Maison Champy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Fairly ripe red fruit on nose with excellent Asian five spice blend. Palate of mostly red cherry with some black cherry as well, also showing excellent spice. Great textures on finish. Drinking well already but there is so much substance and concentration that I expect this to evolve and be wonderful for a couple of decades going forward.

  • 2005 Maison Champy Corton 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Simple aromas of black cherry and boysenberry, good but without much depth. Slightly better on palate with the same fruit, good textures and integrated structure. Drinking well now already, making this surprisingly accessible today for a Corton.

  • 2006 David Duband Clos de la Roche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Odd tasting wine, seemed off center. Tart red cherry, some good stemmy, spicy elements giving it the MSD stereotypical character. Somewhat of an odd finish, without all the components seeming to come together evenly.

  • 2006 David Duband Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 83 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Sweet, ripe red cherry on the nose. Surprising to then mostly encounter tart red cherry on the palate, which tasted good but didn't seem quite in harmony with the wine's aromas.

  • 2005 Domaine d'Ardhuy Corton-Renardes 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Big and burly aromas of black fruit, followed by backward flavors of black cherry and plum, barely sneaking out from beyond the super prominent tannins. Good depth but just moderate length, I imagine this will need Corton's typical 2+ decades to integrate.

  • 2007 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Teurons 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Lots of dark fruit but far more tannin and acidity. Hard to tell how well this will integrate and if the fruit will survive the wine's overly dominant structure.

  • 2005 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Vignes Franches Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Open overnight, which helped a lot but still in need of more time and/or air. Sweet, ripe cherry on nose. Lots of power coming through aromatically and on the palate. Good spice comes through on the finish. Still firmly structured, Ithought this would reach its drinking window around 2013 when I tasted this at release, but i this this will need more time and then last for several decades going forward.

  • 2005 Domaine Arlaud Chambolle-Musigny 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Big black fruit on nose and palate. Slight spice on nose, less on palate. short and simple. Perhaps this is another massively shut-down 2005?

  • 2005 Jean-Claude Boisset Chambolle-Musigny 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Very impressive Villages level wine sowing red cherry and strawberry aromas, followed by similar lush and accessible fruit on the palate. Moderate spice. Overall excellent for its level, drinking well now with the substance to stay at least another decade at this same wonderful level.

  • 2005 Jean-Claude Boisset Echezeaux 88 Points

Lean fruit with just faint spice hints on nose. Same fruit profile on palate, coming across as quite angular today. give this plenty of time.

  • 2008 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts

  • 1998 Domaine Michel Gros Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Red cherry on nose and palate, both also showing at least as much emerging earthy character. Classic Vosne spice flavors in background as well, coming through a bit more clearly on finish. Moderate length. At its peak now, should do well for another 5+ years.
