  • From a 50 ml tasting.
Deep ruby color with some purple at the edge.

Black cherry, raspberry, cassis, violet, cinnamon, orange spice, hint of vanilla. As the wine opens up, raspberry liquor.

On the palate black cherry, raspberry, cinnamon, violet.

Medium alcohol, medium+ body, medium acidity. Prominent but fine tannins. Theres some heat coming through from the 14% alcohol. There’s firm structure and a long finish, but one where the oak is present, almost like the aftertaste of whiskey. Clearly needs more time in the bottle to integrate.

The extracted color, and body of the wine is almost new world like. Reminds me of Kosta Browne Gap’s Crown, if I’m being honest.

  • Nose is still rather closed. Need more air to release the aromas. Notes of red fruits, red strawberry, red cherry. Medium+ acidity and tannin. Tannin is smooth despite youthful. Medium bodied and long finish. Suggest to cellar rather than drinking.

  • Tasting at Vogue (Chambolle Musigny): A dense and concentrated wine on both nose and palate. Rich dense blueberry and cherry fruit is met with significant but already proportional/integrating structure. An impressive 20+ year Bonnes Mares. 95+ (picked Aug 30th)

  • Burgundy, Day 2 (Beaune, France): Barrel sample. "Frightening colour," François Millet said about this wine. He's quite right, as from looks alone, you could mistake the colour for Bordeaux. This is a surprisingly approachable version of a Bonnes Mares, showing lots of sweet opulent fruit, with an emphasis on blueberries. Quite sweet, but there's a bit of acidity hiding on the back end that gives this a racy freshness that is very desired in the context of the ripe vintage. Outstanding stuff, and probably one of my favourite wines of the tasting today. With reference to the colour, this wine didn't see very much extraction, and is really just an expression of the hot summer.

  • Cask Sample. Intense and present with darker plums, powerful raspberries and a wonderfully perfumed spicy tone. Pretty full-bodied wine with a lot of energy and concentration. Slightly softer darker red fruit, leather and salts. Pure acidity throughout. Refined. Long finish. Needs time, but this was a Bonnes Mares one understands. 95 points.

  • Burgundy Trip 2019 Day 1; 11/13/2019-11/25/2019: (Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé - Chambolle-Musigny) Barrel tasting with François Millet. Deep purple colour. This BM is youthful yet flamboyant, showing loads of sweet dark berry, dairy products and spice. Good concentration and rich finish. 92+

  • Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Cellar Visit and Tasting (Chambolle-Musigny): An educational visit with François Millet. A wet 2018 spring was followed by a hot summer summer and drought. An August 30th harvest was the earliest at Vogüé since 1895! Everything was ripe - flesh, seeds and skin. The wine is 50-75% done with ML, based on cuvee, but there is so little malic acid that it is barely apparent. François says this is a vintage that truly expresses summer.

Barrel tasting at the domaine. Massive black fruit throughout, but with nothing hard or misplaced. Near elegant, and when can that be said about young Bonnes Mares? Long and complex finish showing both black and red cherry with savory spice just starting to emerge. Great 93-96 point potential.
