La Fête de La Paulée in Chicago (Formento's - Chicago IL): Late night, small glass, brief note. Red fruit in a leaner style with background spice. Tannins are more firm vs the 2002 but well integrated. Good overall for now, but not quite at Grand Cru density to me.

La Fête de La Paulée: Tasted side-by-side with the 2002. The one shows more dense and brooding vs. the expressive 2002. The flavors and energy here are almost dull in experience. Shows bigger and richer, but without much nuance. Kind of clumsy. I suspect time and air would have settled this down. 90-92? points.

Wines tasted during Super Bowl LII (Chez Kailin): Post-Super Bowl cellar raid treat. This got a quick double decant (I think) before getting passed around. Just starting to show its potential. A good core of red fruit that is elegant despite some still-firm structure beneath. Needs a lot more time or air.

I've had the pleasure of drinking the '02 vintage many times, and was hoping this would be up to the same level but with different characteristics. It's unfortunately not at the '02's level, but then again, that wine is a superstar and in rare air. If I hadn't had the '02 and and expectations or frame of reference I probably would have enjoyed this a lot more.
It's more animal and rustic than I was expecting, though there's an underlying elegance that's undeniable. With time in the glass it softened, and I started to get more flowers to balance out the earthiness. By the time I was done with this wine, I'd had the sense that we drank this entirely too young.
'02's are glorious today, and hopefully in time these '01's will improve to the same level.

A light and elegant Bonnes Mares. Drank alongside '01 Roumier BM and it wasn't fair since the Roumier had so much more depth + complexity. But the Mugnier on its own on the right, quiet night is a graceful wine, with wild blueberries and soil notes.

Pretty nose with delicate sweet spice and candied red fruit. Cardamom and nutmeg notes. Red fruit on the palate, fine tannins, and a smooth red fruit finish. Nose of slightly higher quality than the palate, and nothing here is overly distinguished but a pleasurable wine currently. Peaked 1-1.5 hours after opening

Dinner at Noosa. Pale red-pink colour. Lovely nose of black and red cherry, dark plums and redcurrant. Touches of earth and Asian spice. Palate weighty in its depth but beautiful elegance and length with well balanced fine touches of tannin and minerality. Drinking beautifully now.

From mag. A gorgeous drink, and an absolute pleasure. (Other than the rude guest who literally poured herself a FULL riedel burg glass to the top - seriously.)

Correct colour deep but not over extracted. Fine nose, broad shoulders but lots of subtle notes, mineral and a bit of sous bois, but firm. Lots of firm crunchy fruit , earth and minerals, great expression of place and vintage. Gorgeous wine.

Popped and poured, drank over the following 5 hours. Medium red. Cool aromas of sour cherry and menthol. Fairly austere. Over time, some darker red fruits and tobacco emerge. In the mouth, still very tannic, with noticeable alcohol. I'm inclined to say its simply in an awkward stage as there is noticeable breed underneath, but its a touch disjointed at the moment. Still very nice wine, but I'm going to wait a while before opening another bottle.

Daniel Does Burgundy (Eleven Madison Park): This wine didn't really work for me. The wood was much better integrated than the '01 Musigny I had about a year ago, but the fruit was weirdly candied. Combine the sucking-candy sweetness with the alcoholic bite on the finish and this could seem almost Californian, albeit leaner in body.

Enjoyed at Jean-Georges in NYC. Decanted for 2 hours. Light in color, looked like cranberry juice. Serious nose of cherry, earth and smoke. Complex in the mouth with a long and satisfying finish. Taste of ripe cherry with a rush of smoky earthiness. Velvet on the palate. Worked perfectly with the lamb course. Excellent wine.

Group liked this wine better than me. Full red/pink. Medium clean dusty aroma of red fruit. Tight black rasberry spicy fruit and briar hints, not giving up much. A little bitter. Needs a lot of time.

Burg Dinner, Mostly Bonnes Mares and Clos de Tart (Caliterra -Chicago IL): Black fruit on nose and palate, not very accessible today, but with reasonably good fruit density. Good spice also comes through towards the middle and end. Backward for now, tannins and acidity are more front-and-center than the fruit or spice. If this is representative, I'd hold these until at least 2012, probably 2015. Several people thought this wine had the most long-term potential of our wines, but I’m not convinced it’s as good as some of the Clos de Tarts (below).

Rose petal nose; elegant mid-palate of roses and lightly spiced red fruit, with a light body but good underlying tannins and a good finish. Wow! 94+ pts.

Red fruit with attractive background notes of licorice. Certainly trending to the lighter side of the style.

Served in magnum. I loved this wine. To me, not as 'Bonne Marish' as one expects..more on the elegant side...lovely texture, fruit, balance.
