This blend – the 40th anniversary of Geezer - is 77% Zin and 17% Carignane, 6% Petite Sirah (no Mourvèdre). A nose of treacle, molasses, rhubarb, black currants, plum, Zin funk, and black walnuts rise to the occasion. They firmly knit a broad palate of fully resolved tannins and a near seamless mouthfeel. Coffee gives the final note of the long finish. A shadow of sediment all along the back as it lay in the cellar and two thirds the way around the neck as well. 14.6% alc.(!), but not a hint of heat at all. With beef bourguignon. 01.06.24. Recommended, leaning toward Highly Recommended.

A Ridge Tahoe Weekend; 6/29/2023-7/2/2023 (Edgewood Resort): I didn’t spend enough time with this wine because I wanted to get to the Monte Bello and once I got there it was hard to want to go back. From magnum. This is young and peppery and feels to me like it needs significantly more time to be anywhere close to ready. Would have been really interesting to compare this wine to the first vintage in 65.

Really well stored bittle. Integrated tannins, clear fruit profile despite 15 yrs in bottle. Brambleberry, sage. West coast in fall with crunchy sticks and all that jazz. Really the Fruit is just top notch. Bits of smoke. Yummy!

Magnum. Opened evening of 12/3 with anticipation of drinking over next couple days. Did slow ox overnight and then small decant the following day hour before dinner. No cork issue which I often have with Ridge corks, used ah so. First “trial” tastes were delicious. Fresh, low acid, nose carried some tart cherry which followed on the palate. Red fruits, red licorice. Sleek and light. I thought this was lovely. Only bad news if you can call it that is that it really didn’t develop much over following 2 days( I recorked after second night). Stayed consistent which I guess is good.

Touch of hoisin and balsamic along with black fruits. This is a robust wine, stylistically similar to to Chianti. Highish acidity and tannins which are both strong and ripe. Smoky back palate, persistent and moderately complex.

W ribroast. Bob Thomas was visiting. Yummy wine but we had it next to the 2002 Lytton Springs, which was just super. This is good but the petit syrah makes it more juicy than wine. Great color, good length and just phenomenal Ridge Zin. Cork broke again.

Delicious. Ready now. Drank at cellar temperature. Good fruit still there, nice acid backbone held it together. Well integrated. Nice old Geyserville. Already past its prime. Drink now. Only downhill from here.

The cork did not survive, but the wine is still excellent, if at the end of its life. Baked red fruit, smoke, and cigar box on the nose. Palate is quick to finish, with black cherry and red currant flavors. Acidity is moderate, with med minus tannins. A good casual sip, but enjoy now, as it may not live much longer.

W steak from Bobby Van @ JH and Roosje. Next to the 2003 Lytton Springs. This cork was also bad - typical Ridge problem. Yummy wine though. Great fruit and body, a bit less interesting spice than the LS BUt this was great and interesting. Good finish. Love Ridge (except stupid cork)

Clear medium red. The nose focuses on pure berry fruit with spice and earth in the background. Raspberry, blackberry, and some red cherry. Delicious earthy berry flavours and a long dry tannic finish.
This was from a magnum and it appears to have at least a decade of development yet to come.

GMs - Casual Fridays September 2017: Boysenberry, charcoal, spice, chocolate and blueberry aromas. Quite good fruit intensity but with spice giving it some interest. Good structure to go along with the ripe fruit. Drinking well at the moment.

This is the first of this bottling that I’ve opened. Keeping my hands off the few remaining bottles will be difficult. The color is deep red from the core to the thin rim where the color becomes a deep shade of brick. Rhubarb, red currant, black fruits, Draper perfume, mocha and dusty rose are immediately apparent. The striking bouquet emanates from the glass for several feet. Cedar, red currant, rhubarb lead the attack. Draper perfume presses forward and doesn’t relent through the finish of black fruits, mocha and coffee. This is a seamless wine. But for the rhubarb, this could almost pass as a claret. Barely any perceptible sediment. A blend of 17% Carignane, 6% Petite Sirah and 77% Zin. 14.6% alc. With Shack attack (beef) burgers. Highly Recommended.

ZAP TRADE TASTING, poured from a magnum, nose of briar, black cherry, black berry and plum, delicious, at its best or slightly on the downhill side, if you own, I suggest you drink up, medium/big body, mouth filling fruit, medium finish.

Still fairly primary and lush, with the Draper perfume in full evidence. Lots of lush, plummy fruit. Plenty of acidity to keep it from being goopy. 5-10 years more should bring it to full maturity.

Fruity nose- raspberries, cherries, and a tiny bit of EtOH. Medium bodied. The dried American oak is a little shy in this Geyserville. Nice tannins, ripe raspberries and cherries. Medium-plus finish. This is a well-made wine, but it doesn't taste like an old-school Geyserville ('97, '94, etc). Still a classic American wine. Happy Fourth of July.

Good, but not great showing. Smooth, purple fruit led. Depth is there but want some more minerality to play against the fruit. Could hold longer but not sure it will get much more dynamic.

Cork as solid as a rock, never had a problem with a Ridge cork. Decanted for an hour. First impression is a smoky, almost peaty aroma, some dark briar fruit in there, classic zin spice and candied strawberries, and just a wee bit of alcohol heat on the nose - though this isn't perceptible on the palate. It smooths out a little with some time. The palate has a recognisable Zinfandel character, slightly compote-y and jammy but with some nice structure and roundness to the palate. The acidity and tannins are fully integrated, but there is some slight astringency on the back palate - though this is less noticeable when enjoyed with food. I'm glad I opened this now and didn't wait any longer. It's good to go.

As always, the back label notes nail it. This wine is at peak now if you value the fresh fruit quality that it now possesses. The tannins are fully resolved but it retains enough acidity to make it very food friendly. Consumed last night with roast shoulder of "wild boar," it displayed loads of blackberryish fruit. A trifle hot at first (served at cellar temp) it settled down nicely. I'll hang on to my remaining bottle for a few years to see if we get a bit of tertiary development as with Geezers past.

Medium red center with just a touch of maturity at the edge. Initial nose of cherry and cassis that moved to rich baking spices with a touch of perfume. Started with tart cherry but opened up after 1/2 hour with rich mouthful of baking spice and red fruit. Fine, drying tannins with a med-long finish. This is in a very good place now, but may have some time to go.

The nose showed dark raspberry--not jammy--yet perfectly ripe and concentrated, with a whiff of wild herbs, cola and vanilla. There was a freshness in the bouquet, which lent a lively and youthful snap to the intense aromas. On the palate, it showed silky textures and tugged against the senses with vibrant acidity, as tart wild berry, black licorice and dark chocolate saturated the palate throughout the close. A long, yet zesty finish of tart fruit and hints of herbs lingered. It was an exceptionally balanced zinfandel, and among one of the best I've ever tasted.

A phenomenal Ridge zin and a model of what I like my zin to be. A wonderful aroma of perfectly ripened berries with just a touch of oak at the start. A nice note of spice/herbs present on entry with just enough of a soft tannic bite. Love the layers of complexity here as it evolves through the evening. I could drink this every week!

Beautiful wine. Aroma full of red currant, blackberry and herbaceous notes, with a nice balance of oak. Acidity med+, tannin medium (silky long finish). Palate is rich and elegant with a nice balance of purity of fruit (without being jammy and overdone), and secondary herbaceous notes. Drinking well now but tannins may fall off in 1 year or so.

Spectacular - a terrific Zin-dominated blend, couldn't imagine a better match for our xmas turkey and trimmings. Only downside? No more left. I'd have had a case of this if Customs had let me, and on this showing I'd be sinking a bottle a day over this and next years holiday season. A true American classic.

This was an OK bottle but not great. It has a very nice cherry nose with some darker earthier components on the palate. Overall I liked it but could feel some alcohol and the underlying sweetness which was bothering me. The bottom line this was a milder version of a standard zin (which is a positive for me), but, at least this bottle, not memorable.

This the 40 th vintage of Geyserville is just perfect now. The aroma is mellow, laden with cherry but not overpowering. It is clear that this is a sophisticated wine, deep crimson colour with a lingering fruit finish with just a hint of raisin coming through. Zinfandel is often misinterpreted but this has good structure (for sure the Carignane helps), but to me I wouldn't wan to hold on to these much longer. Drink.

Decanted for 1 hour from Magnum. Fair amount of alcohol on the nose initially; gave way to red raspberry and oak. A lot less "plummy" than expected, and hardly any of the brambly jamminess I generally experience with Ridge. In a good place now, but wouldn't expect it to improve from here.

I agree with other tasters that time has mellowed this wine - less fruit-forward than a typical Zin given its stage of development. That being said, the wine is absolutely super now - well-integrated, complex, and a bit herbal. Probably at its peak so drink now after a brief decant.

Deep red colour. Very restrained nose, even though we gave it an hour from opening to pour. Notes of currant, black cherry & perhaps a trace of blueberry. A very slight trace of barnyard in the background. Not getting the black pepper others mention which often comes out in zinfandels. Nicely balanced & wonderful with food. 375 ml. Fantastic wine in a good place for drinking. It's still red to the rim but it's soft and generous in the mouth with no tannin or nervousness. The fruit is complex, integrating, shows some Zin characteristics but obviously a blend. Overall, now or wait, not over the top, classy.

From a 1.5L. Very primary. It's a gorgeous blend really. Yes, I get the carirangaene (ok, I can't spell it, give me a break) on the nose and palate but to me it gives lift and vibrancy to the wine, elevating it from rustic to refined. We loved it tonight for the bright fruit but it needs at least another 5 years if not 10 to show its character.

From 375. Dark, dusty garnet >95% saturated with color. Big bowl of berries on the nose with a nice dash of dry earth and pepper. Big bodied palate with perfect Zin-esque jam and bramble but also something more Bdx like from the blend. The alcohol and tannins were not playing nicely with each other until about an hour open. The PS seems to really shore up the tannic structure and the Carignane gives an interesting funk to the bouquet and energy in the finish. Ready to go with a short decant. 4+11+18+8 = 91

Zin tasting with friends - Brief notes: This wine still needs bottle time to settle down. Good zin with a lot of fruit and spice but a bit disjointed. This will be better with more cellar time or possibly a couple hours in the decanter. Did not hold a candle to the '97 Geyserville in the tasting.

Dark purple. Raspberry, cherry, lavender and some caramel on the nose. In the hours that followed including the next day after recorking for 24h hours, the nose faded considerably. NobleRottersSydney - California (mostly) (Alio's, Surry Hills): [14.6%, cork] {Phil - guest} 70-80% Zin, but it seems to be the Carignan that dominates here. Weedy-smelling nose. Not unripe-weedy, but rustic, folksy, we-make-do-with-rusty-old-tractors kind of weedy. Another full-bodied, chalkily tannic (though not oaky) wine, it tastes rather ‘redder’ than you expect, even becoming a bit pruney and hot. Still remains astringent. Intense, with lots of weight on the front palate, and a better-balanced than expected finish of medium-length. I’m inclined to give this another five years to settle down a bit, especially in view of the following wine…

Although I am big fan of Ridge wines, I must say this is the 4th bottle out of my collection that was corked and spoiled. Bottles coming from either Geyserville or Lytton Springs - not happy with this trend...
*** Day 3 and I have to edit this note. Upon opening, I thought the wine was spoiled (corked). It is now clear that the winemaker laid a ton of new oak on this wine - it literally smelled like a combination of wood resin and glue. Overwhelming. It gave me a headache. The wine tasted just like it smelled. Awful. Day 2 was not much better, still so chemically strong.
Day 3 however has finally allowed enough time for this monster to open up. It is much more accessible, with a fruity nose and deep, layered flavors of blackberry. Wow - what a completely different wine!!! This wine is huge, and needs to be decanted for a significant amount of time. I wouldn't even bother to open another bottle for an additional 3-5 years. Clearly, it is made for the long haul. I seem to remember Paul Draper saying that his favorite Bordeaux is Chateau Latour. Damn, even the Zinfandel's Ridge is making are gigantic. Watch out! ***

A classic Geyserville, this is showing great concentration and impeccable balance. Dark red color. Luscious bouquet of black fruits, spice, earth, and flowers. In the mouth, concentrated but not overbearing, with structure that is present but appropriate and not overbearing. On my first tasting in January 2009 this was a most intriguing wine. Medium to dark ruby in color. After 15 minutes of breathing, the nose becomes very earthy, almost Bordeaux-like. The palate was utterly complex with hints of dark berries, mushroom, tobacco, pepper and other spices. I would not have recognized this as a Zinfandel immediately, but rather, a blend of Cabernet Franc & Merlot because of its fleshy texture and the flamboyant fragrance. The finish is long with mineral flavors. On this second tasting, it was consistent, but the seeming tartness of Merlot wasn't there anymore. Instead, the zesty character of Zinfandel and the polished Petite Sirah shined. Utterly complex with silky, smooth tannins and a long, seductive finish. Unforgettable. Drink from 2009 to 2015.

Popped & poured from 375. Medium-plus garnet. Aromas of stewed fruits, plums, black pepper, spice, and a hint of smoke. Medium body. Flavors of stewed fruits prominent through the nose mirrored in mouth...really leads me to belive this bottle was heat damaged as the flavors are not fresh (as typical with other vintages). Heightened acidity would normally be a nice compliment to the fruit, but not when the bottle is flawed.

Nose of coffee and a little sawdust. Lots of smoke. 30 minutes later some butterscotch as well. Juicy berry, ripe. High alcohol at 14.6% but no heat. Feels rather light and forward. Good balance, dried herbs. Good balance and length but seems rather simple compared to the bottles I had last year. Could this be shutting down?

This wine is extraordinarily inconsistent, even from bottles that were stored side by side. This bottle was a flat, tannin-less version of the one I had the night before. So, out of three bottles of this wine, one one was exceptional. The other two would lead me to avoid buying it again.

Translucent in the glass. The wine opens quickly and shows significant vanilla, sweet berries, dark fruit and pepper. After the wine decants for about 15 minutes, the pepper softens and there is a faint hint of lemon and natural rubber in the finish. Some tannins, the alcohol is clearly present. After 1 hour, it devolves into an unpleasant sweetness and alcohol. Not bad, but I would not buy this vintage again.

With Thanksgiving. What are consistently lovely wine. Taking on more complexity but still with the full fruit. More earth and the traditional Rhone-like notes I find in the Geezers that have significant Petite and Carignane. Great mouth feel. Beasutiful Med spice nose. Yum.

Popped and poured. Really nice, fairly smooth and not too hot. Complemented our appy's and was a hit. Sweet, broad with some decent structure. Improving in the glass. Can sense the influence of the petite sirah.

Always a pleaser this wine. Dark ruby colour and a fine body yet not overpowering. Smooth and well rounded with a very nice mouthfeel. Avg on the nose though. Very versatile wine and you can combine it with a lot of different foods. Drink Now. (decanted for 30mins)

Bruce Cass Class #3 (Fort Mason, San Francisco): Garnet with slight bricking at the edges. Nose is sweet and spicy with lots of fruit. Tannins are integrated, provide a kick at the finish. Flavor has lots of fruits. Good wine that stands up to spicy sausage.

I expected more but still good. A little tart/green/stemmy, slight mineral component, lean fruit, funky nose, cool silky mouthfeel. The other varietals definitely add to the characteristics of this wine. drank in 375/ml.

Popped and poured. Reddish violet in color with good clarity. The nose was interesting and difficult to peg - red cherries, vanilla, stewed fruits...a little green though. Stems? Thankfully, the stems did not carry over to the palate which was big and fruity and very different from the 2006. High acid and moderately tannic - neither of which was really overwhelming. Moderately long, smooth finish. Very enjoyable, though I prefer the '06. (3+13+17+7)

first 1 of 4. young. Expressive nose. A zingy spicyness surrounding red fruit that survived a pairing with spicy Indian food. Not a long finish, but there may more hiding in there. HOLD VGOOD

From a 375. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. Great nose of black and red raspberries, leather and bramble. Full bodied. Nice complexity. Really lush texture. This bottle was young but really providing a lot of pleasure. After a couple of less than thrilling wines this week, both Jane and I commented that this bottle was singing. great purple fruits on the palate. 50+4+13+18+7=92

Nice, but not the best Geyserville I've ever had - med deep to deep ruby/bl cherry colour-somewhat odd meaty nose with some stewed fruit - wonderfully plush mouthfeel, with exc balance - slightly stewed blackberry and plum fruit, some spices and a briary note- just a titch hot on the finish, and a bit stewed, but tasty and a long finish.

Dark ruby colour that complements its body. Not very open on the nose but still it is present. Nice rounded big body (relatively). Had with Indian Haut Cusine at Benares in London. Held its own agains some medium spiced food. Very enjoyable bottle. Drank straight from the bottle. Decanting would help for sure

Red-violet and not particularly deep. Warm aromas. Strange but rather attractive peachy scent that's carried over into the flavor. Spicy, fragrant wood with a touch of dried herbs. Sweet and ripe fruit that evokes summer. Crunchy plums and a bit of strawberry. Very easy and well-balanced. Later on, a bit of meatiness comes out but it's held in check by all the juicy fruit. The tannins have melted away but the wine is framed by bright but never shrill acidity. Impressive length. Complex and many-layered. Well-crafted and very enjoyable now. Terrific stuff.

Decanted about 4 hours before drinking, quite smooth with some soft fruit upfront but not as much as I expected from a Zin. Tannic finish, agreee that theres a hint of Bdx about the wine in the finish, all in all a nice Ridge.

Opened the bottle on a Wed. night for a glass, recorked and left in Cellar until Sunday night. What a wonderful wine, was very smooth and balanced, not over the top. Rdge makes great Zins and Geyerserville is one of my favorites. i will save my last bottle of 05 to do a vertical tasting of geyerserville's. The 95 & 99 were two of the best zins I've tried.

Bouquet of classic old Zin in general. Ok. Well-extracted, meaty, and especially tarry on the palate (coming from the other grapes?). However, all in all a disappointment. Ultimately a little aggressive and characterless. Rather one-dimensional, and even a little lacking in expected regional defining traits - this could convince you it was from Europe unless you were careful. Dangerous word almost said.... "generic". Big alcohol content leads to a short and blunt finish, with alcohol not integrated. Unbalanced. Needs much more depth and more complex and beguilling fragrance. I don't think this is a matter of aging. This seems to be about at peak to me, until around 2012: A softened tannic structure would make this intolerably flabby and directionless.
A very pleasant and even excitiing drink (serve with a nice greasy and powerful meaty dish), but just not at the level it should be for the cost and reputation. And not as good as some other vintages of this wine I have tried. Oh well - it was a gift to me :-)

(at Budakon – Philadelphia) Deep garnet color. Sweet grape and berry fruit nose with a touch of ink (in a good way) and a bit of earth. Complex. A bit hollow on the mid palate – there is an eau de vie edge to this. Coiled – it might age well, but the mid palate hollow feeling is a bit worrying. (87+?)

Deep purple hue. Raspberry, spice and some dark fruit on the nose. The tannins have significantly backed off since I last had this over a year ago, which isn't surprising, but at first the fruit hasn't stepped up to a corresponding degree. After a good amount of air, the red fruit comes through. Good balance on the palate and a nice finish
First time I've really agreed with those who describe certain Ridge Zins as taking on a Bdx-ish quality. This wine is on its way to becoming a more refined example of Zin, and might be quite special in 2 years or so. Right now, it's no longer a blockbuster, but needs significant air to bring out its better qualities.

Nice nose of delicate stewed and crushed fruit, anis, coffee, and what smells like American oak. Vivid fruit and anis in the mouth, although it's a tad hot, showing it's 14.6% abv a bit. Good structure and has so much more focus and class than most of it's over-ripe, over-extracted, franken-wine contemporaries. This is some serious zin. Decant for full effect.

Geyserville Vertical (My House): This is my favorite of the 'new' vintages of Geyserville. nose: cardamom, cinnamon, mellow spiciness, with a bit of green stem aroma. palate: I love the spices, this wine is just so tasty! Roy Hersh said he expects it to turn into the 1995 with age. If that's the case, I need to find some! Finish is rather clipped, which is, in my opinion, its only fault.

This is the 40th Geyserville vintage from Ridge. This vary dark purple Zinfandel had a sharp expressive nose with citric, blackberry and nuts. The taste is explosive an acidic fruit up front splash with long expressive finish. This Zin is very full bodied and should release nicely with beef, lamb and other red meat. 89, a good Zin for the price

On the nose - cracked pepper, violets, blackberry, plum and super super dark chocolate. On the palate - sweet exotic dark berries, plum, butterscotch, fresh tobacco and a cherry tomato kick on the back end which presented itself with air. This had a very lush and sweet mouthfeel and while I was suspecting heat on the finish, I was surprised that there was none to speak of. This was the perfect end to a long hard day.

Very perfumy nose, raspberries, flowers, cream, vanilla. More structured than 2006, but perhaps a bit lighter. Medium bodied with raspberries, spice and some licorice. Good finish and nice acidity. I could taste some oak that is not yet integrated and a little bit of heat which prevents me to score this very good wine even higher.

Another awesome Ridge offering, we not only enjoy the sheer taste of these wines, but they are so well structured you know you're enjoying a bottle that will enjoy many years of cellaring - Dark red, well concentrated, notes of bramble, blackberry, plum, cherry and vanilla notes on the nose, fabulously well structured and smooth on the palate, the finish lasts extremely long, excellent! My thing with pretty much all the Ridge wines is that if I'm in the mood, I like them. This wine is a little too sweet for me -- OK, its Cal. Zin. (mostly). There is just a slight hint of complexity, a little too much vanilla. But in between the vanilla and the fructose there is a nice raisiny, and almost herbal, thing, not a lot of tannins, but just enough acidity to make it interesting. This was $30 at Trader Joes -- not a bargain, but what I was wanting tonight and I certainly don't feel ripped off.

The Sampler (The Sampler, Angel, London): Made from 77% Zinfandel, 17% Carignane and 6% Petit Syrah this wine was bright purple in the glass. The nose showed candied cherry, blackberry crumble and baked black fruit characters ending in a hint of spice. The palate shows blueberry, dark chocolate, pepper, spice and cedar. Very nice.

It has been almost two weeks since Blanca and I drank this bottle, but I remember it tasting very different from the previous bottle back in January. This time, it had almost a Welch’s grape soda nose at first but this blew off after a while and was replaced by a rich Zinfandel nose. It seemed to be a lot more concentrated in the mouth with a much bigger feel. After this bottle, I can now understand how the Geyserville Zin is known for its ageability. Keep the remaining bottle for a while, please.

Color:From the moment you pour, this wine looks young. Very bright purple. I was expecting something deeper (2 of 3). Smell: The nose is pretty thin for such a well-rated wine. Certainly not promising. I don't expect much from the wine after smelling it (2 of 4). Taste: The bouquet does not mislead! The wine is indeed thin and un-remarkable, though not distasteful. Tastes over-filtered, and has a short finish (what is there is well blended though) (3 of 8). Overall: It's just okay. (2 of 5) Total Score: 9 out of 20.

Pop and Pour Nose: light and airy with red fruits, caramel, vanilla, and an underlying metallic sensation to keep it from being boring. Palate: caramel-covered strawberries. Super smooth integration of fruit flavors, complete with baking spice, and a nice tannic grip and long finish. I see how this wine can be an easy case buy. Very well made, but not too thought-provoking for now. Day 2: nose has gained a bit of dirt and spice is a bit more evident. Red fruits still dominating. Palate: super smooth wine, like liquid candy (but not too sweet). Very nice. I'll drink this, no question, whenever given the chance.

Nice bright maroon color. Nose is assertive and complex: tart blackberry, anise, cinnamon, and vanilla all swirling around a core of smoked bacon. Beautiful. Palate is soft at first with cherry and mint. Then it erupts with pepper, tar, and cranberry jelly. Moderate tannins. Wonderfully chewy acidity that goes on for days. Mingles with walnut in the finish. Long and intense. The structural balance of this wine is nearly perfect. Has a leaner and more spry attitude than the more luxurious and dense '03. Everything a great, classically styled Zin should be. Smack-yo-mama wine.

Dark ruby in the glass with red fruits on the nose. Red fruits as well on the palate with medium tannins. Finish was not particularly long. I really wanted to love this wine, but I just didn't. Not bad, but as I sipped I wondered how it would do in a blind tasting and concluded it wouldn't stand out. Like I said, not bad, but wouldn't stand out from the crowd.

Maybe we have drunk too much older Bordeaux lately, but cough syrup came to mind with this wine. It has an almost syrupey like consistency to it. It is indeed very smooth and I can't see how age will help (though the label says it will evolve for 10 years and Ridge continues to have extremely informative labels.) I respect the other reviewers - maybe it's just not for us. We are big fans of Ridge, but this one doesn't do it for us. Tempted to buy one more and open in 5 or 6 years.

Solid Zinfandel. Just LOVE Ridge zins. So pure and clean on the palate. Excellent mouth feel with a smooth and intriguing finish. Aromas of dark red berry, white pepper, smoked meat and violets. Palate is lively and dances on your tongue almost like a fine champagne. The tannins are beautifully integrated with excellent acidity and some nice alcohol on the finish showing some pleasurable heat. Bravo once again.

Nice zinfandel - young and fruity right now but with firm enough tannins to make me think it can last 5 years easy. Dark fruit, mint and leather on the nose. On the pallet - blackberry, black cherry, some earth and chocolate. Lush mouthfeel and a medium-long finish. Good control of the alcohol. It would be interesting to taste again in a few years to see how/if secondary flavors develop - not sure if this will develop or merely last.

This is a beautiful wine. Mint and licorice and dark berries on the nose. Lush and full in the mouth. Primary, but very pleasurable now. Third wine of the night, after 99 Mouton Rothschild and 98 Ampuis Cote Rotie. Nose seemed more Aussie than Calif, with blueberry and mint-- not your typical Geyserville nose. Palate was blackberry, blueberry, some mint, and sweet cherry. As a Geyserville fan/fanatic, I was disappointed, but I think it will be in its element circa 2012.

Dark red. Dark and brooding nose of blackberries, blueberries, mint and earth. Full-bodied, dark bitter flavors and some spicy notes, ends with agressive tannins. Tastes more like Syrah than Zin and is obviously very young. On day two it is much smoother and rounder, the bitterness is gone and sweetness has taken its place. The fruit has become more like raisins and plums. What transformation! And proof why all wines should be giving the chance to present themselves on day two as well. Not really my style, but a great glimpse of what you may achieve with Zin.

90 Minute Decant: Deep red color, but not black like Aussie shiraz. Can still see through it - lighter than expected. Nose: Bacon fat, red fruit nose. Nose was a little tight and hot, but a lot going on, quite spicy. Mouth: Red and black currant, barn dust, creamy cranberry, very well integrated tannins, raspberry frames the long finish with a flora note at the end. Very polished wine with pure fruit throughout. Can tell this will reall develop its 2nd and 3rd tier flavors over the next few years. 91+
150 Minute Decant: Nose: Getting a persimmon note now, more black fruit. So much going on in the nose it's hard to break it down. Mouth: Creamier, more black fruit, bright raspberry and red cherry. A great smoky/smoked nuts note wraps the finishing flavors. A very polished wine with a long finish. Appreciate the good oak balance - well done. Very well integrated and fine tannins. Didn't sense the alcohol level at all. 93+

Lovely, lovely. Bouquet filled the room, extremely fragrant perfume. Dark Zin fruit, well integrated and balanced. This wine has 17% carignane and 6% Petite Sirah and is seamlessly blended and in balance. Long finish of sweet fruit that is not jammy nor cloying in the least. Drank beautifully over 4 hours and was 'good to the last drop'. (sorry). Decent enough tannins exist to make me believe this wine will improve over 4-5 years and drink well for 7-10 years. The trick will be in keeping my hands off of it.

Drink.

Initially silky in the mouth. After a few hours, with a silky texture became a bit rougher but returned the next day. Sweet red and dark berry flavors with hints of crunchy mountian herbs. Classy wine. Curious how it will evolve.

Medium weight smooth barely noticeable tannins. Red fruits with a touch of earth and sage initially then a bit of blackberry and coffee on the finish. Not much finish and did not improve with much with air. Wanted to like it more.

Watch out! ***

Translucent in the glass. The wine opens quickly and shows significant vanilla, sweet berries, dark fruit and pepper. After the wine decants for about 15 minutes, the pepper softens and there is a faint hint of lemon and natural rubber in the finish. Some tannins, the alcohol is clearly present. After 1 hour, it devolves into an unpleasant sweetness and alcohol. Not bad, but I would not buy this vintage again.

Pop and Pour
Nose: light and airy with red fruits, caramel, vanilla, and an underlying metallic sensation to keep it from being boring.
Palate: caramel-covered strawberries. Super smooth integration of fruit flavors, complete with baking spice, and a nice tannic grip and long finish. I see how this wine can be an easy case buy. Very well made, but not too thought-provoking for now.
Day 2:
nose has gained a bit of dirt and spice is a bit more evident.

Among the best Zinfandel wines I can remember. Beautiful dark purple color, and more complex and elegant than the "pure play" California Zen's. These guys know how to make this wine from this land, period.

I should have waited a few years on this, but I wanted something to drink with my Mexican meal and this was the closest thing at hand. Not wasted, but I think It'll get better. I'll check it out again tomorrow.

Deep garnet; vanilla, milk chocolate, black cherries, blueberries; candied cherry, ripe brambly fruit, plush, full body, good balance, firm ripe tannins, lingering finish.
Decanted 2 hrs. Ripe and lush yet rustic with good structure. Seemed a bit closed, needs 5-10 yrs. Good with burgers.

90 Minute Decant:
Deep red color, but not black like Aussie shiraz.
150 Minute Decant:
Nose: Getting a persimmon note now, more black fruit.

Ordered off the wine list at Jak's and we were surprised at how good this is. Great nose with a strong streak of passionfruit. Pomegranate, blackberry, and blueberry on the palate which is very round and open. Nice finish. I went out today and bought a bunch.

Great. Fruit, acid, tannin, mouthfeel, all nicely balanced. Mostly Zinfandel. And 17% 120-year old Carignane. Paul Draper says it will still be good in 2016. A wonderful thought.

Luscious raspberry fruit, great mouth feel. Geyserville is one of my favorite wines. This '05 is not quite as good as some of the efforts over the last few years (including the '04), but still a very good wine.
