Sunday evening in diessenhofen, pairing it with a bio steak from singen market. Deep purple color. Sweet cherries, strawberries, milk chocolate, soft espresso, vanilla, some wet forest floor. A very nice nose. Med acidity, med alcohol, med body, med flavor intensity, dry tannins, med finish. Nice sweet fruit, green pepper, vanilla, chocolate on the gums, sweet pepper, some mushrooms, and a nice lingering minty and saline finish. This wine is at it s top now. Love it.

One of my first acquisitions as I entered the wine trade, glad I saved it until now. Cork cracked during opening requiring a bit of surgery to remove the wine side, was glad that the wine was still sound. Brooding dark currant and black cherry, very structural, with anise in the mid and a chewy left bank tannic structure in the finish. This wine is ready, don’t hesitate to open, but keep some good food in hand to balance the tannins. Great!

Not bad, but not as good as the other SMs of the decade. Still very tannic and rather hollow, the lack of fruit contributing to the impression of a missed opportunity. There are lots of good 06s, but sadly I don't think this is one of them.

Drunk at the beginning of January 2023, note added later. Some raspberry, surprisingly rhubarb and cherry, unfortunately also still too "hot", alcoholic. Very long finish, doesn't seem to stop. Longer than some neighbouring wines that cost a lot more.

Friday evening in Diessenhofen. Pairing it with a nice steak 🥩. Deep purple color. On the nose nice bramble fruit, dust, forest floor, mushrooms, a bit of mint. Med acidity, med body, med alcohol, Med flavor intensity, med tannins, med finish. When I took a first sip I loved the green notes with the mouthful of cream. After a bit of time, the mouth is a bit more watery, but I still like that musky, fleshy, plummy mouth. A bit too thin to be perfect but I still very much liked this.

Well, I’m a big fan of this estate - but not of the vintage. For me, 2006 is the most expensive vintage in terms of QPR. Bought some en primeur an had been afraid to open one due to my 06 experiences so far. This wine confirms all of my prejudices. Lack of fruit, high level of acidity with some green notes. The tannins are harsh and drying what makes the wine austere. I’m afraid the wine won’t get any better. Drink with food

Showing nicely now. A typical Sociando-Mallet from a good (but not a very good) vintage, tannins are noticeable but beginning to soften. There is sufficient fruit left to enjoy it over a decade or more. Best before 2028.

Black fruits, tar, pencil box, so far so Cab. Tannins are satiny. Decent finish. Not the greatest vintage here - lacks the concentration of, say, the 1996, even accounting for the shorter ageing.

One from a case of 12, have not tasted since last year,, so pnp , smoothie black fruit emerges, some tobacco, barnyard, forest, so indicating an old school Bordeaux, quiet fresh and with pronounced tannin bite, mid bodied bottle, fresh cassis on the palate, some mineral aromas like maybe graphite, tobacco, ending with a good length satisfying, will easily live another decade from now on, but one to open and enjoy from now on, **(-***),around 87- 89(+)

Opens with a lovely nose of blackberries, fragrant herb and mint. Palate is fairly primary with lots of dark berry fruit and savoury tannin, as you’d expect. A fairly noticeable green streak too. Overall, this still tastes surprisingly young given the age but perhaps this doesn’t account for Sociando’s quality in aging. I’d probably leave these for another five years if I had more as it’s likely to show much more interestingly with more secondary notes.

Coravin fun - Italian investigations plus supper selection (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, cigar box, a little bramble, savoury spice and a touch of alcohol prickle. Medium plus intensity acidity, flavours of liquorice, black fruits, black tea, tannins are a little gritty and the whole travels medium plus length. Hmm. I think it just needs a bit more time to come together, based on this tasting.

First bottle of an OWC-12. 12,5 % vol. ALC. Cork in almost new condition. Very few sediment. Good stuff. PNP. Getting much better after an hour. At the beginning too much wood and very dry finish. Manque de fruit et d'ėlėgance. Consider the general critique of GERSTL (merchant in CH). Price point in 2021-06 at 30 €/bottle all fees included (auction). For me: OK.

Deep red, orange edge, medium drops. Faint forest fruit, tobacco, graphite, slight smoke, vanilla nose. Red fruit, oak and vanilla taste. Quite tannic, a bit tart, with some fruit. Lean, a bit unbalanced towards tannins and acidity.
Would testify this bottle easily as from lesser vintage, if you would have tried 1990, 96 or 2005 from this estate, this one is a little boring, way too grainy tannin still, good grip, black fruit, some minerals, but all components tres bourgeois, 87,88

PnP. Much more open than two year ago. Still retain this green undertone, which can be a turnoff. However, Three hour slow ox does soften it quite significantly. The palate is a little thin and bland. Appropriate food will definitely complement it.

I drank a bottle of this vintage last year and like many other customers, I also had the feeling that the wine would not improve with more time. I was wrong: had a bottle today which opened with a floral nose, blackcurrant and fresh, dark fruit. Definitely more complex than the previous one and with a particulary well balanced mouthfeel: fruit very present and tannins softened and integrated. No sign of the harshness and bitterness I tasted the first time.I really loved this bottle.

Stricter and tougher than the 01, with a tannic backbone which will give it longevity but with slightly hollow fruit which won’t, so I’m not convinced about this one. The fruit is darker than usual, quite concentrated cassis and there is the familiar SM freshness to the finish, but without the elegance of the 01.

Mainly black fruit, cedar, lots of tannin, some bitter notes, not sure that it will improve with time. Drunk the last third of the bottle this evening after being 5 days in the fridge: much better, the bitter and green herbal notes nearly disappeared, quite fun.

Annual Coravin blitz - day three (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. A little gamey up front, biscuit, red and black currant with plenty of spice and cedar. Black tea joins on the palate, juicy acidity, tannins are muted but drying and chalky. Long. Hmm.

Extremely closed when first open. Fruity in about 30mins, but with 90mins decant, opens up to notes of cherry and light spiciness. Like most Sociando, great for its price point but limited complexity. Keep for next 3-5 years before opening.

Double decanted about an hour before serving with a grilled, prime NY Strip. Plums and blackberries in the nose and initial flavors with relatively soft, round tannins. Not much of a mid-range like too many 2006's, but a moderate finish. This is a good 2006 Bordeaux at a reasonable price that continues to develop. Perhaps at its peak in 2-3 years.

Deep, dark crimson appearance. Displays an attractive tinge of bottle age on the bouquet, with black and red fruit and cassis on a bed of damp earth, conifer, and cedar. Full bodied, long, and tightly wound, with obvious depth, structure, and flavors that are enhanced by black raspberries and spices. Youthful berry finish lingers. Really good but needs 2-3 years to show its best. Decant.

Drink the magnum. Red fruits, mainly cherry, and a bit oaky on the palate. Not too strong and impressive. Relatively less ripe than Dame de montrose 2009 on the same night.
An example of second wine of good year defeat the grain vin of average year! Though I always prefer grand vin, even from a small chateau than a second wine of famous chateau..

This wine needs a lot of breathing. This was decanted for 90 minutes initially. It was somewhat imbalanced, with fennel seeds, spices and weak fruit. Lots of acidity and silky tannins. It took at least another 2 hours before it opened up and came into balance. I suspect this needs another 10 years to be at its peak.

Opened at a restaurant. A classy nose of cedar, dried currents, and a hint tomato leaf that I associate with cab franc. Aromatic and complex. Cabernet based flavor in the mouth -- currants, dried mushrooms, earthy notes, linear, with the seasoned fruit that, while not lush, provides just enough body. Overall balanced, with some residual tannins in the finish, and quite approachable now.

Typiccaly Sociando, black berries, wood, leather, rather tannic, enough acid. Would say try again in about 5 years to make this wine more complete. Nice classic left bank with just 12.5 % alcohol, but with enough power to keep for at least 10 years. Really nice.

Medium bodied, with a rustic, stern, masculine leaning to the tannins, the wine is still young. Showing tobacco, cedar chest and blackberry notes on the nose, with a crisp, chewy, blackberry, earth, pepper and cassis thread in the finish, give this at least 5 more years, or longer to come around.

A solid, classy medium to full bodied Haut-Medoc exhibiting good clarity and a deep ruby core. This wine is packed with fragrant aromas of blueberries, chocolate and licorice and on the palate delivers finely interwoven layers of cassis, caramel and burnt tar as well as subtle hints of pencil lead. A fine, soft texture and well rounded and integrated tannins lead to a long velvety finish. A great effort and super value. Drinking beautifully now but will no doubt continue to improve in the bottle for the next fifteen years. Drinking window: now -2030.

Served with battered and deep fried quail at a local restaurant where we went for dinner for our birthdays. Double decanted about an hour before serving. This is still a very young wine that needs at least 2-3 years. Cassis and cedar on the nose and initial flavors; somewhat short in the mid-range, good length with relatively round, not astringent, tannins. Look forward to enjoying this over the next 10 years or so.

Classed growth oak with pencil lead and classic medoc aromas. Tightly packed and concentrated berry compote, there is a fresh, flashy almost sexy element to this although you get the sense that this is great potential rather than the finished product. Obviously young but the tannin is manageable next to the generous fruit and there is great balance here. Everything is in the right place which makes it very easy to get through. 92

Deep, dark reddish-purple in color. Fragrant, attractive & complex nose of developed dark fruit aromas of cherries, boysenberries & cassis with classic overtones of cedar, tobacco & cigarbox, some bell pepper, herbs, earthy, forest, loam, pine notes, gravel and some spices. Full bodied with a good concentration of developed, balanced dark fruit flavors of sweet cherries, tart cranberries & plums with earthy notes, herbs, minerals, some spices with a bit of still unresolved tannins in the background. Smooth lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting and extended airing but has the structure & fruit for additional but limited development with several more years of further aging.

27th Oct 2012 The colour was dark red, the nose was full of berries and more legs than i expected. The first mouthful confirmed that this vintage needs more cellaring time for it to reach its full potential. Its personality has not evolved and its tannins are still present which a year or two of cellaring will allow it to mature into a more enjoyable wine. not ready till 2014

More or less the same as last year's note; there is a lot of fruit juice, but the tannin seems to be a bit unripe and edgy. This wine really needs time to soften. If I had any I would not start drinking this before 2018. I score it 88 for now, but that score will probably go up with enough ageing.

Fresh cassis and black cherry fruit over savoury earth, gravel and green herbal notes in a medium weight package with all the elegance and restraint I'd want from a traditional claret. Even after a couple of hours in a decanter, there's plenty of tannic grip at the back end but enough fruit and richness to keep it from feeling overly structured or austere. Very nice right now, and I look forward to seeing what this turns into with some time.

Enormously fruit driven with a lot of concentration and tannin. Toasted oak, cassis. Tannic and unfriendly at the moment, but this is probably one of those wines that can last for 25+ years. It will be very interesting to follow this wine of this vintage over the years. It might have some resemblance with the 1986 in its youth and is probably better. 90++

Tasted in a vertical of the 1996, 2000, 2005, 2006.
The 2006 shows scents of green apple, red fruit, caramel, garlic powder and nutmeg. In the mouth, all sour cherry, medium acidity and strong drying tannins. It is alcoolic, somewhat disjointed and the finish is very light, almost watery in the mouth. Not a bad wine, but clearly too young. ranked 4th or the group.

My first taste of a Sociando Mallet. Not impressed. Perhaps this is just too young. Colour - Burgundy. Some gradation. Nose - Ample fruit. Red and blackcurrent. Very nice nose. Palettte - does not live up to the nose. More austere than indicated by nose. Tannic. Bitter. Thinner body. Fruit is just not there. Will try an older Sociando on another occassion. Price - $65 at LCBO.

This is the first Bordeaux I've had in a while that really made me want to keep going back to the bottle/decanter for more. Starts out tasting like a mix of equal parts cassis and gravel, and with time this unravels and opens aromatically to show accents of pencil lead, earth and green herbal/leafy accents that give a nice sensation of freshness, rather than anything vegetal. There's some tannic grip on the back end, but most of the structure here comes from the acidity, which makes this feel incredibly light and precise (almost like a ripe Loire Cab Franc at points ), and very food-friendly. Great wine that I need more of.

A pretty typical young Sociando-Mallet. I'll give it 90 points for now, but it could go up by a point or two or it could go down by a point or two. It has a bite to it, just a twinge of acidity, but otherwise it seems to be pretty clean and crisp, with pretty classic Sociando characteristics. The question for me is whether there is complete ripeness here. But alas my note is sounding too negative. Nice pure deep ruby color. It has a strong cedary nose with good raspberry/blueberry fruit and tannins. It has some rough edges right now, but in the end I think this will prove to be a successful, no-nonsense wine.

Black fruits, tar, pencil box, so far so Cab. Tannins are satiny. Decent finish. Not the greatest vintage here - lacks the concentration of, say, the 1996, even accounting for the shorter ageing.

so pnp , smoothie black fruit emerges, some tobacco, barnyard, forest,
so indicating an old school Bordeaux,
quiet fresh and with pronounced tannin bite, mid bodied bottle, fresh cassis on the palate, some mineral aromas like maybe graphite, tobacco, ending with a good length satisfying,
will easily live another decade from now on, but one to open and enjoy from now on, **(-***),around 87- 89(+)

I think it just needs a bit more time to come together, based on this tasting.

This wine is packed with fragrant aromas of blueberries, chocolate and licorice and on the palate delivers finely interwoven layers of cassis, caramel and burnt tar as well as subtle hints of pencil lead. The colour was dark red, the nose was full of berries and more legs than i expected. The first mouthful confirmed that this vintage needs more cellaring time for it to reach its full potential. Its personality has not evolved and its tannins are still present which a year or two of cellaring will allow it to mature into a more enjoyable wine.

Half Bottle Wine Night (San Francisco, CA): Two hours of decanting. Dusty tannins, dark fruits. Subtle. Palate has strong but sweet tannins. Moderately long finish.

Great wine that I need more of.

don't open this : an extreme case of a wine that is almost undrinkeable in his youth, but feeling confident for the future development
