Very dark and brooding, and rather unyielding and austere at first. With a few hours of air it softened up and started to reveal fruit and class. Reserving judgement of how well this might drink in the future but for now it failed to impress.
Entered drinking window but still have potential to improve. In fact, I would have wait another 5 years more to get the maximum pleasure. Drank from magnum. Notes of cassis, black currant, toast, coffee, chocolate, toast, spices. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. Long finish.
Wild, wild stuff. Everyone said Piemonte (!), I sensed Bordeux, but not this one - mý favorite one, normally. Concentrated, intense, irony, black frui galore; much too young, of course, but some times ... #JR&Co

Aroma's of toffee, karamel, black coffee, cedar, eucalyptus. Very foresty and animalistic. Super complex, could sit and ponder these aroma's all night. The only thing: where's the fruit? Will that come once it opens up?
Sizzling tannins, so vibrant. Linear texture, a pleasant hardness. The eucalyptus-tone gives it an underlying freshness, lift and levity that sets a Great BDX apart from a good one.
From the first sip it's apparent that you're in the company of celebrity, of greatness. If there had been more red fruit, this would've been 97+ points for me. Could the fruit still develop in a few years?

Decanted for 2 hours. Then corked for another 2 hours. 4 hours of air. Wine is still not showing all I would like it to. It’s pretty darn big still. I wouldn’t open my bottle if I had one. I would dEf wait some more time. How long. I don’t know. But I know u aren’t getting all u paid for if you’re drinking it now. It taste really good don’t get me wrong. But it just isn’t soft as I expected for a 17 year old wine. Give it time.
Flawed. Recently purchased bottle. Unfortunately, I have once again not adhered to my principles (for older bottles I have 1-2 vendors I trust). Unfortunately, the bottle was oxidized. Very sad.
Dark red color. Spicy tobacco and dark fruit bouquet. Still tannic and somewhat closed now, it has a very long finish. A little raw today, but excellent depth and concentration. Good grip. Needs several years to soften and round out. Given the vintage (2006), this wine way over performed.
Tasted this at Mark’s yearly Bordeaux tasting. Sampled 12 vintages each of Château Haut Brion and Château Margaux. Great wines and comradeship, what an exceptional event to be part of! Thanks to our host for his generosity in presenting a once in a lifetime Bordeaux tasting experience.

First of 4. 45 minute decant. Muted nose of earth, tobacco, smoke, some black fruit. It's pretty closed off still. Evolved in the glass to illustrate some fruit, but it's still a baby. Need to hold off 10 more years IMO. Well made (obviously) and more elegant than powerful - almost reminds me of a right bank wine. Best guess is that this improves dramatically as the fruit opens up - but wait.

Drank for my wedding. Fantastic! Regal, classic, and understated Bordeaux excellence with all of the pencil shavings, dried flowers and cedar/forest floor aromas laced with delicious dark fruits that only Bordeaux can produce. First growth all the way! Drink now or any time in the next 20 years, but no need to wait!
beautifully balanced tannins and acidity, typical flavor, round and silky - a feast for your nose and palate. What a pleasure. We had a head2head vs. the 2002 yesterday evening and this one clearly rocked the show. Still young, more than one decade left - problem, it is too delicious to wait for. Enjoy it for sure!

Allowed to breathe in bottle 1 hour, then another 30 minutes in glass. Clear deep dark garnet color. Beautiful bouquet of black currants, creme de cassis, charcoal, hints of fennel, anise, grilled sage. Similar on the palate, full body without too much weight. Beautiful balance, seamless, satin mouthfeel, lingering finish. Fresh and youthful. Early in its drinking window, still not close to peak. Try again in 2 years.

Super nice wine now. in my opinion ready to drink now if you also wants some freshness. However, the drinking window is probably within then next decade or so... so no rush, but why wait? 95+

Beautiful earthy and floral nose that’s just intoxicating to take in, enticing you to dig your nose deep in the glass for more. The palate is just as gorgeous with notes of freshly dug earth, slight barn yard, dark berries, hints of minerals, and worn-in leather. Silky tannins and impeccable balance bring the wine together for a long, elegant finish. This is pure class.
Occasional dinner group: A mixed set.. (@ Bouwkunde, Deventer): Mature and concentrated bouquet with earth, licorice and dark berries. On the palate dark berries, beautifully dosed oak, earth and licorice. Very juicy acidity, round tannin and a great length. Beautiful and mature, aristocratic wine. A bit more evolved than expected, but still very beautiful.

The Four Seasons Tasting 2006 Bordeaux First Growths (Aubergine Restaurant): Deep garnet colour. The bouquet features black and red fruits, bramble, cayenne pepper, bay leaf, sage, and a touch of oxidation. The wine is intense and concentrated on the palate, with powerful tannins and firm acidity. Nevertheless, the ripe, powerful fruit remains well-balanced despite a slight feeling of oxidation. It lacked some depth on the mid-palate, the finish was still lengthy, and the wine was complex and enjoyable but didn't hit the high notes I expected due to the oxidation.
PnP Initially, black kirsch, eucalyptus, and strong oak barrel notes Still quite primary. And closed off Needed 2 hours in the decanter to really open up After that: meaty, gravelly notes and some smoky notes Please, if you’re drinking it in the next few years or so, give it some time in the decanter for it to truly show its stuff Best in 5 years or longer

The nose feel quite young for its age. Still mainly revolving around dark fruit, toast and a touch of spice. The palate has grippy tannins that can benefit from further aging. Interesting to see this so youthful still. There is no sign of heat or oxidation which puts this on the safe side for aging anther 5-10 years. I think it will can a point to the score once mature.
A delicious HB in its sweet spot. Decanted 2 hours before service. Elegant texture, perfect balance, good length and silky tanins. Medium bodied with a nice freshness, aromas of blackcurrant, cherries, cedar, leather. Delicious now, and will age well.
From a pristine 375. Deep purple black core with no signs of age. Very youthful and primary bouquet, with notes of blackberry, crushed stone, bramble and earth. Medium bodied, lovely balance, silky texture, great focus and grip, long finish. Showed very youthful, even from a half bottle. Revisit in 5 years.
Still young, but beautiful, silky smooth, lengthy, little bricking, wonderful fruits. Enjoyed at one of the most unique dinners ever…a pre arranged dinner for two at a camp sight off the snake River in Jackson Hole, after an hour and a half guided float down the river seeing bald eagles, the Tetons. Came to rest at our campsite, had dinner for just us two, even our own Dessert Teepee! If you find yourself planning to go to that phenomenal area, Wyoming allows one to bring wine, and there are more than enough wonderful places to dine and drink your best ones, but none more unique than this one.
Classic Haut Brion but not a blockbuster wine in any way. Black currants, herbs, earth and gravel. Drinking quite well for a young Bordeaux. Very enjoyable.
Decanted one hour. Attractive, majestic nose of black fruit, tobacco and underbrush. The wine is still very youthful. Big and concentrated with flavors of black currant, plum and herbs this is certainly delicious but falls a bit short in terms of the complex layering Haut Brion can often deliver. This still has many years of life ahead and I suspect it will improve with age.
Classic Haut Brion, earthy, med-to-full bodied, currants, and cherries. Comparing with other vintages I have had in the past, this is on the lighter end. Still young and will age well.
Hefty and classy aromas of dark fruits, leather, earth etc. Soft, meaty and almost compot like in the mouth. A lot of fine tannins. Delicious and seductive to drink now, but the tannin structure suggests many more years in the cellar.
limited notes overall but a very gorgeous bouquet which drank very smoothly and that was as much savory as fruity. Showing well today with a decant but has plenty of life left and may even additionally evolve with time.

Decanted 1hour. Very sophisticated. Dried berry, wet stone, clay, dirt, damp forest, wet animal, flinty, with quite a bit of acid. Well structured wine. I do wish for a bit more weight. After 2 hours, the wine is opening up well. Much longer finish, less acid. I can see this will be a very good wine, just missing a little something that would make it exceptional. Might want a longer decant at this time. Very enjoyable wine.

Approx 30 min decant. Tasted blind amongst a few other left and right bank Bordeaux’s. Once we got to this one, we knew immediately that it was the haut brion, this wine is in a class of its own. The nose was full of earth, tar, and some fruit perfumes, on the palate you’re greeted by black fruit (plum, blackberry, black currant), mineral, leather, and earthy notes. The tannins were grippy but not overpowering at all, medium to long finish. Overall, the wine was well integrated and definitely has a long life ahead!! What a treat.

quick note- last minute dinner - Short decant. Exotic and beguiling nose that leaps from the glass. Powerful yet it kept me guessing. Great smooth palate and decent finish for such a young wine. It was a baby for sure but excellent stuff in the making.

Reticent nose of dark fruit and a hint of tar. Medium weight fruit but with deep reserves of power. Prominent tannins still. This wine is all about potential. Trying to score and describe it is a bit like trying to review the new Rolls Royce when it's only half way down the production line. You just know it's going to be good some time in the future. Nonetheless, thinking of buying a six pack for my retirement.

nose - per duane flinty, blackberry mouth - graphite, pure clean dark fruit, powerful and pure, yet restrained and wound up - this is a closed wine with potential. dont bother to open anytime soon
There is a definite acetic note on the nose here at play so perhaps not a perfect bottle; the palate shows a lush concentration but it is marred by that hint of oxidation. Unforgivingly tannic frame. Quite austere style. Very chunky on the finish. A representative bottle could be very good indeed and I would imagine in dire need of time in the cellar from the looks of it.

Haut Brion Vertical -1998 to 2009 (The Grill Room at the Rosewood DC): Expressive nose displaying opulent black fruit, crème de cassis, blackberry jam, licorice, strong lead pencil, caramel, wet tobacco, incense and earth. Excellent concentration, nicely packed sweet black fruit, rich and unctuous, perfect amount of acidity, a hint of tannins but mostly masked by the opulent fruit and a long black fruit driven finish with a hint of lead pencil at the end. This is a big scale wine that will reach its youthful peek in another ten to twenty years. Despite lacking the precision and finesse of the 00 and 05, the opulent fruit and rich palate make this an excellent Haut Brion with excellent aging potential.

2017 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/16/2017-10/25/2017 (New York City, NY): Deep ruby in color, the '06 Haut-Brion flaunts black currant fruit, graphite, anise, tobacco and tar. A blend of 57% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, it is full-bodied, fresh and has nicely integrated alcohol, yet still has substantial fine-grained tannins and a fair amount of oak. This will require more time to flesh out, but all of the components are in place. Drink 2022-2040.

Very youthful on the nose - something a bit meaty here. Some very well defined black fruits showing themselves on coaxing. Quite mineral, already showing some complexity; tannins are resolving themselves nicely on the palate. Good weight and density, quite a rich mouthful and not belong before the tannic frame shows itself. Lovely balance and weight here. Excellent potential.

Medium bodied with black and red fruit, cedar, herbs. Weill integrated and nice balance. Beginning of some complexity on the finish. This lacks the oomph of stronger years but may develop further interesting complexity. Will be interesting to watch in the next ten years.

A private lunch (Auberge Jean & Marie, Amsterdam, NL): Warm and spicy but elegant and refined, leather and tobacco, quite extracted and concentrated, beef stock and warm bricks, relaxed and fresh, finely grained tannins, hint of earth, very good length. Needs more time - revisit in 2021.

Gently modernized, yet made with great respect for the Bordaux heritage. Great oak and some early complexity. A bit sweet. Long. Enjoyable straight out the bottle, but improves with a very long slowox, over several days. 97-99 for now, but could potentially reach a 100.
Prior notes: "Dark ruby color, looks very youthful at this stage. Nose of black currants, smoke, spice. Full bodied palate, black currant, plums, cedar, graphite/lead, anise, pipe tobacco. Fine grained tannins, beautiful structure."
In a good spot right now, but seems it will still benefit from a few more years of bottle age. Has upside, 94+

Not very expressive on the nose (a bit of smokiness, and earthiness), the wine has a dark purple robe. The palate is full-bodied, a bit creamy, with a nice depth, some freshness and a medium + finish. This is very balanced, has smooth tanins and drinks very well now although it would certainly benefit of a further aging.

Four-hour Vinturi decant, rebottle for transit to 32nd anniversary dinner (The Crossing) with thirty-minute second decant at table. Spicy red fruit with currant highlights on the nose first decant at home, second decant threw more earthy & tobacco notes. Given its young age (yes, 10 years is young for this wine) and the less-than-stellar character of many wines from this vintage, my expectations were cautiously optimistic, yet this approachable beauty (57% merlot) shone brighter than I was prepared to hope for! Rich and elegant, the palate centered on mineral, plum and dark fruits, yet still had a graceful lightness in spite of a definitely noticeable, but not offensive, tannic astringency. Lovely medium++ finish surprised with a brief flash of distant campfire on the nose of the last half-glass...wonderful! In spite of all these kind words and high rating, remember that this is still just a baby and you will be rewarded for your patience if you can resist opening these - secondaries and tertiaries, anyone?
Deep ruby in color, with the tell tale aromatics of cigar box, tobacco, tar, cassis and dark ripe fruits, while it's still in the primary stage, it's impossible to deny the class, charm, elegance and concentration, as well as the length found here. Give it another decade for it to expand and develop.

Dinner on the Gran Tier at the Metropolitan Opera, hosted by Kay. Really spectacular setting, a real treat to sample this wine at this stage of maturity (10 years)...Wine was decanted for about 45 minutes, drank over 30
Dark ruby color, looks very youthful at this stage. Nose of black currants, smoke, spice. Full bodied palate, black currant, plums, cedar, graphite/lead, anise, pipe tobacco. Fine grained tannins, beautiful structure.
More elegant and approachable at this stage than expected. This will be spectacular in about 5 years (best guess). Very good now, would afford this a 4+ hour decant if drinking now, we didnt give it enough time to really show...score goes higher in time

Leiden in Rotterdam: Impressive wine, still young, however drinks very well due to a certain lightness next to the huge concentration. Nose plums, tobacco and earthy notes. Taste full body, dark fruit, plums, cedar and tobacco. Good finish.
2015 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/19/2015-10/27/2015 (New York City, NY): Deep ruby and packed with black currant fruit, graphite, anise, smoke and tar, this full-bodied wine (a blend of 57% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc) is much more elegant and approachable in this vintage than its nextdoor neighbor, Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Fresh acidity, seamless alcohol and big fine-grained tannins all work in unison to make this wine "sing" in the middle and on the lengthy finish. Although it is still somewhat tight, another 5-7 years of cellaring should lead it into a beautiful plateau. Drink 2020-2040.
If it's this good now, it will be amazing when it's mature. Gave it an all day decant. Still no sign of age- dark purple wine, nose that filled the room, lengthy, beautiful structure, tobacco, dark chocolate, beef- Magnificent.
The Four Seasons Tasting Bordeaux First Growths (Aubergine Restaurant): (Tasted Blind): A mid+/deep garnet colour running to a slight orange rim. The nose is more tertiary and complex, with some pomace & raisin, forest fruit (more black fruits than red), undergrowth and comes across as brooding. An elegant wine on entry, there is a thick, powdery, sticky texture with herbal notes, very ripe sweet black fruit (almost overripe), cassis with a tertiary overlay more so than expected at 10 years old. A fresh lemon acidity rises underneath the wine and gives lift whilst the mid-palate has length and reflects classic Pessac with a little more muscle and power and width to the solid tannin structure. Full-bodied, with fair concentration, this feels denser in line with its quality. At this point the wood is well integrated giving a cedar edge, and balances the ripeness of fruit with an elegant feel. Fabulously long, the wine improved in glass and will still need more time to open further.

Far too young to be opening this wine. It's still sleeping. There is definitely ample concentration and structure to the wine. But it's going to be a firm, classic style of Haut Brion that requires at least another decade of cellaring.

The wine is clear and bright with a medium garnet colour and presence of legs. The nose is clean and developing, showing medium intensity aromas of ripe plums, liquorice, mushrooms, cedar, tobacco and earthy notes. The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium+ well integrated acidity. It has high tannins and medium alcohol. It has a full body and medium+ intensity flavours of ripe plums, liquorice, mushrooms, cedar and tobacco. Medium+ finish.
It is a very good quality wine with a decent complexity provided by some tertiary aromas, a nice length finish and a great structure. However it could be more complex. Can drink now, but it has enough structure and fruit concentration to develop more complexity in the next 10+ years.

Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion tasting (Watson's, Hong Kong): More delicate than the La Mission. Very rich and full - what I expect of HB. However the tannins are too dominant at the moment giving a slight bitterness. Stash this away if you've got it. Rustic qualities with light leather, pink peppercorn, blackberries, licorice, and volcanic rocky soil. Eucalyptus, pink flowers. Dark styling with touches of iron. A big palate and super young. Nice acidity. The cinnamon and cherries just keep showing their face - you can't help but get your nose right up in there. Intoxicating. Deep spice and earth touches. Overall spice driven though. Pencil shavings and some gravelly scorched earth on the back end. Great structure. Put this aware for at least a decade. Give it a 6-8 hour decant if drinking today.

Dark dark color. Tar, earth nose, somewhat retiscent. Very well structured from tip to throat, overwhelming dry tannin throws off the balance at this time, but there is a monster with fruit, lead pencil, and smoke hiding back there. Long oak finish, again somewhat disrupted by the tannin. In 4-6 years, this beauty should hit its best stride.

Bucket List tasting at Wijnkoperij Okhuysen: Quite developed. Dark colour, deep crimson.

Best guess is that this improves dramatically as the fruit opens up - but wait.

Drank for my wedding. Fantastic! Regal, classic, and understated Bordeaux excellence with all of the pencil shavings, dried flowers and cedar/forest floor aromas laced with delicious dark fruits that only Bordeaux can produce. First growth all the way! Drink now or any time in the next 20 years, but no need to wait!

Initially, black kirsch, eucalyptus, and strong oak barrel notes
Still quite primary. And closed off
Needed 2 hours in the decanter to really open up
After that: meaty, gravelly notes and some smoky notes
Please, if you’re drinking it in the next few years or so, give it some time in the decanter for it to truly show its stuff
Best in 5 years or longer

The nose feel quite young for its age. Still mainly revolving around dark fruit, toast and a touch of spice. The palate has grippy tannins that can benefit from further aging. Interesting to see this so youthful still. There is no sign of heat or oxidation which puts this on the safe side for aging anther 5-10 years. I think it will can a point to the score once mature.

Fresh acidity, seamless alcohol and big fine-grained tannins all work in unison to make this wine "sing" in the middle and on the lengthy finish.

Sherry-Lehmann Advanced Wine Class (Bordeaux) (Sherry-Lehmann Gallery): Dark, ruby red color. Layers and layers of aromas on the nose, with both red & black fruits, flowers & vanilla spiced oak. Palate also showing many layers of fruit, which to be fair comes across as somewhat jammy at this point. Regardless, it's in a totally different class versus the other '06's in the tasting

2006 Bordeaux Tastings; 10/24/2009-11/1/2009: Refined nose, very similar to LMHB - classic Graves smokey perfume, nice balance, slightly less full on the palate than LMHB but nice and round. 94-95.

2006 Cru Classés de Graves with Prince Robert, M Delmas and Hugh Johnson (Sherry-Lehmann): such classic claret! pure cassis. elegant. subtle layers beneath. great structure. needs time but the silky super fine tannins are tempting you to have it all now.

Lovely nose of vanilla and some spice. A masculine wine that is full and rich and vibrant. Bright on the finish; a wine that totally coats the mouth. Good complexity. Tasted blind.

This shows a complex perfume of ripe, black fruit, tar, herbs, cassis and smoke. In the mouth, the wine is plush, rich, opulent and full bodied. This elegant wine ends with a rich mouthful of sweet, spicy, ripe, juicy dark plums, cassis and dark berries.

Binny's Chateau Haut-Brion Seminar (Binny's South Loop, Chicago, IL): 14.5% ABV. Dark red color. Nose with bright fruits and cherries. Lots of pepper and sharp tannins on the palate. Very long finish. Still very young but should be amazing in another 10 years.

Chateau Haut-Brion Seminar (Binny's South Loop - Chicago, IL): Dark ruby in the glass.
Dark red berries, cherries, nutmeg, dusty hay and figs.
Some cool roasted red peppers on the nose.
Graphite on the back end also showing superb structure and backbone.
Finish goes on and on. Still needs LOTS of time (obviously).
Glorious.
