Deep ruby colour, looks dense and new but clear at the rim. Nose is red fruit, pond water and some celery/curry leaf. I have to be misreading these aromas but they’re the best I can come up with. Not giving much away. In the mouth this redeems itself. It’s got a strawberry tinkle over a plummy bassnote. Wood, (school desk, not cedar), spice, earthiness. What I love most is the balance of sweet fruit, integrated, fine tannins and acidity. and the tertiary notes adding a sort of background hum of savoury complexity. Very much better than I’m making it sound and stood up well over 3 days.
I know, it shocks me to see this in writing. Three days? What was I thinking? Should have done it in there and then but in my defence I had others bottles on the go.

This is in a very good drinking window right now. Not a showy vintage but it had lovely balance with dark fruit, vegetal notes, earthiness and velvety mouthfeel. Completely met expectations for an 06 St Julien.

This has settled down over the last year, losing a little lushness and gaining some balance. In fact, the slightly exuberant St. Pierre style suits the vintage, just like the Poyferré tasted recently. Spicy strawberry and blackberry, but now a little more cooling blackcurrant and a nice touch of crisp acidity on the finish. I still found it a little cloying, and it does need to be drunk at a reasonably cool temperature, but otherwise this is very enjoyable and my guests loved it with a confit de canard.

A balanced and structured St. Julien that is drinking well now but will last. Decanted for 2 hours. Notes of tar and leather, dark fruit. Not the most complex wine, but very nice and no complaints

Well-cellared since release. This bottle was consumed over 2 days and it came across as uninspiring. Deep garnet core. Some dark berries, leather and vanilla on the nose. The palate was a bit severe with more structure than fruit. Although nothing really wrong with the wine, drinking it was a bit of a hard slog.

The nose was very appealing - violets, vanilla, creamy strawberry and hints of spices. Not at all the reserve shown by other 06s at this stage, this was quite forward. Quite lush notes of wild strawberry and blackberry, but with enough acidity to keep it on track, very beguiling and winsome, trying hard to please. After one glass, I found it a bit tiresome and gave up, coming back a couple of days later, when it had settled down somewhat. This is more restrained than many "modern" wines from this period and there isn't a surfeit of oak or concentration, but it is a little sweet, giving the impression of a higher alcohol level than the 13° it announces. Not really my sort of wine but which will certainly appeal to many others, hence the score.

(2/12/21) Purchased with another bottle from a local merchant/auction house, this bottle was much more open and evolved than the other one, even if it was less concentrated. This bottle showed a very nice nose on PnP and just a touch of bricking. There was leather and cassis on the nose and lots of cassis on the tannin filled palate. Unlike my last bottle, there was an adequate level of acidity here, which gave the wine better balance. The improved balance could have been simply a result of the fact that this was not as concentrated as my previous bottle. In other words, the better balance might have been the result of aging/fading fruit finally coming into balance with the low acidity. Whatever the case, this was a nice bottle of wine. (***+/16/92)

(11/20/20) From a 750ml bottle, decanted for two hours. This wine was very youthful and primary. It displayed a shy nose full of dark fruits and had a densely knit, dark-fruited palate filled with an abundance of ripe tannins. There wasn’t much in the way of developmental complexity here—there was the softening that comes with age but next to no tertiary development. My only complaint would be that the acidity was a bit low given the heavy concentration of fruit, but the grip of the tannins helped fill in that missing bit of structure and balance, and in the end, it was a very enjoyable bottle; 13% abv. Full bodied, a typical Bordeaux, focus on the black fruits, a nice acidity, the wood delivers just a bit too much bitterness to give a perfect balance.

Drank alongside a 2006 Anderson’s Conn Valley CS with rib roast. Very dark purple in color. Nose of sea salt and a touch of flowers and brine. Attractive and soft mouthfeel — the merlot really mellowed the tannins of the CS. This has 10+ years in it to evolve.

This is still a little too primary for my liking. I drank this alongside a 2008 St Pierre and a 2006 Langoa. The Langoa was the most open, followed by the 06 Pierre and then the 08. It seems like the 08 will be more aromatic and red fruited than the 2006s, which have more intense fruit. I’m going to leave the rest of the 06 case alone for five years to see what develops. My guess is that this will be a stunner in a few years.
Still far too young. Fruit on nose and a Palate, lots of tanins, decantet for two hours. A left over for second day was still tanic, fruitfull and very good. Try again in 2023.

This is insanely good and authentic Bordeaux for the price. It's full-bodied and rich but classically proportioned especially in the texture which has developed that oily, silky mouthfeel that aged Bordeaux can show. There are delicious flavors of blackberries, cassis, graphite, tobacco and charcoal and it finishes with dusty dry tannins and that real flavor of minerally Bordeaux earth. Very impressive juice. 92+

After decanting, I found that there was a little sediment down the sides of the bottle where it had lain to rest. The wine is very aromatic from the start with blackberry to the fore together with a slightly volcanic, sulfurous nose. In the glass, the 2006 Saint-Pierre is a dark purple-red. It is full bodied, medium dry with dark generous fruits and a hint of residual sweetness on the mid-palate. The finish is long and enjoyable with a lingering bitter cherry on the back. It is still reasonably tannic in a way that gives structure and richness. Overall, this is a gorgeous, well balanced wine that is ready to drink now with a minimum 2 hours in the decanter. The 2006 Saint-Pierre is outstanding and should remain very enjoyable for another 8-10 years.

Closed and impenetrably young. The alcohol is still a bit overwhelming on this one. Lots of wood planks on the nose with a touch of salinity. Nice robust wine but unsure about its depth and complexity and whether it will ever unfold. Will there be pleasure at the end of this road? Complex and expressive nose of black fruits, sweet spices, pepper and new leather. Tannins well integrated with the body to give a refined palate that is fruity and structure. Acidity level provides further ageing potential. Very pleasant after taste that is mouth-watering.

Dark red/black, tending to a middle red at the rim - olives, dark fruits and cedar on the nose. Deep and intense on the palate, quite long, aromatic, almost floral, needs 3 hours to open in a decanter, the tannins are largely smooth but still quite prevalent, slightly grainy on the finish. Should really be very nice - try next bottle in about 3 years.

Opended and aired for 3 hours decanded and aired for another hour. Just faboulous on the nose - a touch of classic Margaux mixed in with this St, Julien; crunchy red-black cherry fruit, peppercorn, and toasted bread but also the flowery rosy light-weight smell lingering in the back. On the palate soft but still tannic and good acidity that promise a long life. Again the cherry fruit, with tobaco, pepper and a very aromatic yeasty tar thing to it This is a wonderfull wine - I am sure it will improve over the next at least 10 years - if my remaining 6 bottles will last that long is however doubtfull.

This is a very good wine. I was positively surprised, given the many so-so reviews. I agree that it is a bit tight now, but opens up aromawise and softens structurewise after 3-4 hours in the decanter. I believe this will be a very good bordeaux in maybe 5 years and it last for 15-20.

Not in a very tempting stage at the moment. The oak, acidity and juice is ok, but the tannin seems to be a bit green. Green paprika in the taste as well. I score the wine for the moment, but I expect the wine to score higher when everything softens a bit and it will show more of its complexity. Give it another 7 - 10 years of cellaring.

Tannic and backward at this stage. Nose shows earthy and vegetal tones; tobacco, tar, green pepper. There is a complex set of tannins here, particularly well integrated on the midpalate, but they fall apart on the finish and the wine becomes disjointed. Low acidity. This wine hints at great things to come and may improve a few points IMO after at least 5 more years.

On the nose very typical for St Julien and my kind of earthy tones. On the palate this is a very young wine that I find difficult to judge. Powerful tannins, full bodied, detached, balanced but (still?) not quite "there". The wine seems likely to live long and prosper. However, I'm not the person to listen to. By all means, it is still too early for it to be enjoyable.

Firm and classical wine for the long keeping. Very good cassis juice and luxurious oak. Not showing much elegance at the moment, but when the tannin has melted it will appear. I would not drink it before 2018.

Bordeaux Night (Binny's Grand Ave.): nose: tight, but well balanced nose of cedar, dark red cherries, cranberries, sour berry tones, tobacco, and bits of spice box. Good depth and showing as well as possible for how young it is right now
taste: extremely well balanced with a real sense of class, but also very young with hard tannins right now and tones of cedar, dark red cherries, craberries, and spice box tones
overall: Showing off lots of promise, but it is fairly tight and tannic. There is a good amount of class and elegance to this, but its gonna need some time to really get it out

Clear dark plum core of moderate intensity out to a ruby edge and thin watery rim. Clean and intense nose of lifted menthol, cedar, dark fruit, vanilla, smokey oak, and hazelnuts. Dry with excellent mouthfeel (coats the whole palate) - a little plush but with structure. Plum and blackcurrent on the palate and very well balanced - moderate body/alcohol/acid with just a bit of an extra touch of tannin which will be good for the long term. Moderately long cherry and oak finish already - this one is a winner!

nose: real good classic nose of leather, cedar, black currants, black cherries, and dark berries. Fairly tight, but real good depth lying in there with a real nice elegance to it
taste: excellent medium/full feel with a nice richness to and good depth with well balanced tones of cassis, dark berries, leather, cedar, and black cherries. Very elegant with mouth filling tannins that do let themselves be known
overall: this should have a real bright future. I really enjoy the elegance that saint pierre brings and this comes across as a classic st julien. Needs some time to come together, but should be a real lovely wine when it does

Union Des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (Dallas): Very dark. Cassis, licorice, custard. Plush, modern, little hot. Good.
